  • Sadly David Ferrer passed away today at the hospital do to his injuries. David Ferrer #20 driving a 1970 March 701 crashed heavily in the first race on Saturday at the fast Arie Luyendijk corner before the straight. I wish all the support and extend my sincerest condolences to his family and friends...
You can see him in the #20 1970 March 701 at 0:26 1:24 and 13:39
    www.motorsport...
The first race was red flagged and didn't start again. The Ligier LS17 with Matra V12 was again among the cars and I was looking forward to film it. However it only drove 2 laps, I didn't see it at the second race.
At the end of the film you see it warmup the tyres.Because of the accident of David Ferrer and the lack of Matra V12 I didn't film as much as I had planned.
Results only race 2 from Sunday:

Neoobot I was shocked, I didn’t see the crash as I was at the other side. But I’ve seen many historic races and never seen a heavy or even deadly accident. I hope it will never happen again, but with these cars it’s inevitabel.

I was standing at the tarzan corner filming the cars coming up to the straight. So unfortunately I filmed the crash and we all immediately knew it was very wrong especially because he got t-boned by the lotus.

I was there. It was my first trip to an historic F1 event. I was amazed how committed some of the drivers are.
    R.I.P. David Ferrer.
I know the FIA has launched an investigation. Racing classic F1 cars at relatively untouched classic venues like Zandvoort is inherently dangerous. The cars have few modern safety features and, frankly, there are a couple of places on the track which make me surprised that it has grade B homologation. Modern F1 cars wouldn't go there. On the back straight, where the link road joins the track, and also on the exit of Luyundijk, it's possible to go into the barriers at a rather obtuse angle.
Big respect to every single driver who competed with such passion over the course of the entire weekend. It's tremendously sad that one of them has paid the ultimate price.

How did you like the historic event? I always love the atmosphere at Zandvoort during those days. I know after such a crash it's a bit of a dumb question. But us Dutchies are always proud of the historic GP and the enthusiastic drivers from all over the world that love to come to Zandvoort and drive in those gorgeous machines.

Overall I really enjoyed the weekend, thanks! Everyone we met was really enthusiastic about the event. As you say, the atmosphere at Zandvoort is great. As we left the track on the Sunday night, one of the teams had laid on drinks for everyone and one of the drivers was perched on the bonnet of his car, still in his overalls, beer in hand, having one of those "racing driver" conversations where they make gestures with their hands to show what the car did during the race, which summed up the spirit of the event for me. The great thing about the older cars is you can see the driver as well as the car. It also made me think about whether differentials and clever throttle maps on modern racing cars really improve the show - seeing the old cars up close being steered on the throttle was a real privilege.
When the crash happened I was on the dunes at the back of the track with my friend. We didn't see or hear anything of the crash, just saw the red flags come out when the leaders were on their second lap. Then about 10 or 15 minutes later the helicopter took off which was the first indication we had that somebody was in trouble. Then about 10 minutes after that the official statement was read out saying Ferrer had crashed and been "resuscitated", at which point obviously we knew it was very serious. It wasn't until the next day that I saw pictures on Twitter and realised the car had been smashed to pieces. So that overshadowed the event a bit.

Yeah I come to the event since it started in 2012. It was a real eye opener at the time. Since then it has become tradition to go and see the real and true motorsport. Unfortunately that also includes seeing accidents. I actually filmed the crash since I was standing at Tarzan. The crash itself wasn't even that horrible looking. It was just that the March from 1970 was very very dangerous. It was a bit like Jochen Rindt his crash in Monza. Quite weird that a crash in 2017 can look just like a crash from 1970 with a car that was driven at the same time by Amon. Anyway tragic accident which somehow never will part from traditional and old school racing.

Tudo bem Scheller?

I never said there was a crash in this video. I was on the other side of the circuit when it happened. At 11:49 you see the cars slow down, because the race was stopped.

Can you tell us what video shows the crash? Please. I cant find it yet...so I can look at what might have been cause. I am ivestigating similar crashes at fast speed corners like this Arie Luyendyk corner. Thank you for good video of classics.

No one that has filmed the crash will upload it. I have it and out of respect I won't upload it (not clear pictures anyway), some friends have vids as well and gave it to the FIA who are investigating it.

It is part of history though. To my knowledge it is the only fatal accident in a March 701. Does anyone know which chassis number his car was/is? @@erwinr9328
