Ah, good memories! I was there as well. We were standing on the paddock watching the straight and the difference in sound was really noticeable. The other cars were pretty much all DFV's, I think. What really blew my mind though was the freedom you had to move around there. No cars were blocked by fences or anything. I walked through the garage between the F1 cars to the pit lane but noticed my way was blocked by a mechanic but he politely stepped aside! My friend who goes there every year explained that they started with lots of fences but it turned out they weren't needed. It's all petrol heads over there. Nobody is going to risk damaging his childhood dream! My dream car was the Saudia Fly Williams but it sounded nothing like the Matra V12.
