Yeah, his attitude during the whole competition is how I would be if I went on. He's just there to compete and have fun. And I think that's the best attitude to have.
I stopped by his house the other night to get some of Richey’s books from his wife. She showed me this sword and I held it for a minute. It was a spiritual experience. He was a great bladesmith and an even better man. Richey is missed.
I gotta say... The wrap getting unraveled seems like a minor problem that can be fixed by simply rewrapping the whole thing. But a bent sword? I don't know, it feels like a bigger issue than a handle wrap coming undone.
Yeah I'm rooting for Richie but I cant deny that he lose. I mean, Elijahs blade has a slight bend, but still functional in battle. As for Richie's blade, it would definitely be a bother in actual battle. It would affect the swing, grip and so. But in a battle of beauty, design, and the blade? Richie is definitely the winner.
Well you see the challenge was to create a usable sword that could withstand the challenges. I've tried using a variety of swords without any wraps on the handle and it is almost impossible as the sword slips out very easily. There are no fixes in this challenge so what's done is done and imo I bent blade that cuts is better then a blade you can't swing.
@@edwards7428 More handles than not dont have wraps like that. Maybe the way you hold the sword is not very well. may wanna figure out the right way. Unless your talking about more Japanese swords. Which I have seen lots of wood handled variation without wraps and people could handle them marvelously. Idk maybe they're magical
Well it all depends on how the texture on those handles play out. Katana has wrap for a reason it creates Friction for your grip since Katana type handle is a straight piece without pummel of curve at the end to prevent it from sliding off your hand. So if the sword handle is smooth wood and the wrap on it became undone it's a big problem.
Eleijah's blade outclassed Richie's in every way if not for sharpness. He had a very comfortable and more durable blade compared to Richie's and was almost just as sharp.

@@strongishman7871 Yea exactly it looked fat and slow and japanese swords are all for fast sharp and easy to wield weapons but i guess it comes close to a "critical weapon failure" cause its not easy to use a blade which wrap is getting apart and then the handle may bite into your hand or may get wet with sweat and slide in your hands so i bet it was a hard hard choice between these two

I love that every competitor on this show is wholeheartedly into it, everyone respects each other, and no one back talks someone else's work(s), these guys are truly doing this for the love the craft "just with an added bonus of some cash".
Not really. 😂 Like 99% of all the others you just didn't listened to Doug after the kill test. Both smith's took a slightly bend. With that they where tied. But the loose wrapping seemed to be more of a problem, then the lighter blade brings an advantage. Just because someone is a better person doesn't just mean they have to be the winner of a compaction. I mean the task is to build the best possible copy of a weapon...not to be a super nice guy. I just love it how everyone thinks he knows more about how to judge these swords then the JUDGES who used them side by side. But yes, you are right and the professional smith's and weapon experts are wrong, he surely had to win, because of his smile.
I know Richie. I have lived in Mississippi my whole life. My mom teaches concealed carry permits in his gun shop. He’s a great guy, and he has the blade he made on display in the shop. He is a genuine, good man. He makes amazing blades.
For me I see Richey as the winner (UPDATE) Thank you guys for the likes Never Realized them :O oh, also I just watched the video now again. These judges are sometimes some dumbfucks who cannot think deeper and make the right decision. Very Well done Richy, Id really love to buy some blades of yours. 👍🏻
His edge wasn't as hard or as sharp and he didnt even cap the end of the handle like your supposed to with all japanese swords. That's why it came apart. Attitude is nothing. People shouldn't be judged on their personality in a competition. I've had a job taken out from under me just because someone else was more appealing even though I was a more dependable and harder worker
My friends Richie has been like that all his life. I went to school with him from the first grade on and we grew up a few miles from each other and is one of the nicest people I have ever known.
The handle is kinda bad tho but the blade is pretty fine but handles are the part of the sword that connects the weapon and the user but with a good blade with a bad handle still will makes it a bad weapon

And while they say it doesn't matter what the swords do in the strength test, if it's neck and neck, they will look at that as well and Elijah's sword performed better in that test as well.
