  • Are you concerned about the use and safety of stents? We asked Dr. Robert Stoler, Co-Medical Director of Cardiology at the Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital, to set the record straight on stents. Dr. Stoler explains when and how stents are used and how Baylor decides if a stent is the best way to remedy a heart issue.

Im 46 years old. I had 3 stents put in yesterday. One of my arteries was 99% blocked, the other was 95% blocked. I went in for the angiogram test and they almost wanted to do a bypass surgery on me. I am home now. I was having chest pain and shortness of breath. It all happened very quickly. Im still kinda in shock. I think I was on the verge of having a heart attack any day by the way the Dr explained it to me. Im still very scared.

had two stents fitted in my heart, One in my left artery and one in my right artery, The difference is amazing, I cycle seven miles everyday on my mountain bike up the hills and go running on the tread mill three times a week, My arteries had narrowing due to plaque build up but having the stents fitted as transformed my life, I have changed my diet to a healthy one and had the one hour procedure in hospital while i was awake, I must stress i did not have a heart attack but was getting discomfort in my arms and across my chest if i did anything physical, Kind of a dull pain which went away when i rested, The Cardiologists saved and transformed my life, I cannot thank them enough and i am very very grateful.

Soooo many people have a heart attack or get stents and don't do much about their weight or exercise. Exercise people!!! 2.5 hours a week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. People watch an average of 35 hours of TV a week--you can workout less than 10% of that time (miss one 30 minute show a day) and workout. It's fun!!!! (I have two stents and am super fit).

I just had a stent put in a couple of days ago. I was suffering from sudden chest pain almost daily. They found a 95% blockage in my left main. I already feel better and can walk up the stairs in my house without being out of breath or having my blood pressure shoot up. Which reminds me. My BP would suddenly shoot up to the 200's for no reason at all then the chest pain would start. My first trip to the hospital resulted in them just giving me a ton of BP meds which didn't seem to help after a few months.
I already feel better and after a couple of days I'll be out and about walking around again.

1% is not low risk (1 in 100) You also mentioned 90% of the time ... that means 1 in 10 have a problem. What about the Courage Report which concluded stents do not prevent heart attacks? I consider 0.1% as a fairly low risk, not 1%.
