A Peaceful Journey: Crafting Bradford Cathedral's Lantern Tower from card and paper in N Scale
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Paper, card, and a LOT of time! Bradford Cathedral is slowly emerging in 1:148 scale, and this video takes you on a relaxing journey through the tranquil process of building the Lantern Tower. Watch as this delicate structure is meticulously crafted, one part at a time. This is a slow, meditative journey that showcases the calm, focused art of model making. 23 separate sections will make up this epic card and paper model of Bradford Cathedral, and I’ve now completed THREE of them!
The Lantern Tower is the latest to be finished - an elegant modern addition to the original nave that beautifully captures the atmosphere of the Cathedral. This part of the project has been particularly soothing to create, and the process of bringing it to life has been a peaceful, time-consuming endeavour, with each detail being carefully crafted over many hours.
As part of Bradford City of Culture, #bradford2025, I’m creating this N scale (1:148) model of Bradford Cathedral to be unveiled at the Cathedral in September 2025. This video offers a calming escape, providing a quiet space to unwind and watch as a miniature masterpiece comes together in front of your eyes. Whether you're a model maker or simply looking for a peaceful moment, I hope you find this process as relaxing and fascinating as I did in creating it.

20 minutes. Not a word said. No silly captions. No clickbait.
I was enthralled.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed this. I had this format in mind as I was filming the building of the tower. I am pleased that people seem to have appreciated it.
The thing I like about watching your channel is, no 3D printing, no laser cutting, no cricut machine. Just modelling how I like it. There is a place for the other techniques but for me this is how I modeled before I fell ill and it's the way my grandad modelled before me. I like to watch someone build from scratch and not go to a 3D printer and print it. I felt a great satisfaction building similar to this (but more with plasticard) and I guess you get a similar satisfaction knowing the work involved to get the end result. Excellent work as always
Thank you - it means so much for you to say that. I take a similar view - I try to do things as close to how my grandad would have done (but he drew with a ruler and a pencil instead of Inkscape).
Hear, Hear! 💜🙏😊✌️👍
Yes, scratch building is the real fun of miniature modeling. 3D printing goes against the actual philosophy of the thing.
I see things in scrapped materials 😁
@@Chandwell But Inkscape has the advantage of being able to spend considerably more time creating a single element, which can be duplicated many many times, rather than the need to create many identical elements one at a time, requiring much more time the older way. You use the modern tools available to sympathetically preserve the older craft whilst also improving the workflow. I too have a 3D printer but would never consider utilizing it for a card modelling build, the whole point of card modelling "is the card". Great video as always Michael, loved every second of it. Thank You,
Yes a joy to behold real modelling
What you don't see is all the hours of work you put in analysing the architecture and devising the best way to micro reproduce it. Poetry in motion... artist and scapel... Utter perfection
Brian
That is true, Brian. Thank you.
Dog + snow = amusement. Simple tools + simple material and your skillset = a work of art.
Thank you very much. That is kind. And yes the dog loves the snow!
Thank you for the beautiful and very relaxing video. Greetings from Germany!
Thank you very much!
You're creating something very special here, Michael. Well done. With you all the way.
Many thanks!
Wow!
Thanks Matt
Really brilliant modelling as ever, but also the style of video was great: very serene, quietly absorbing. I'd definitely be up for one of these every once in a while. I now know exactly what you mean about it being satisfying doing all the intricate cutting. 😊
Awesome, thank you! If I have even gone part way to explain what the modelling process is actually like for me, then I have won with this video - thank you!
Someone leveled up their editing skills, awesome job!
Wow, thanks! Very kind!
Superb modelling and with that music, I could watch for hours.
Glad you like it!
Lovely contrast. You carefully planning, considering and making a well thought out design, and the dog doing maddies
Yes! That is true. They did make me laugh.
The music choice was so good on this. Loved the way you got the printer sounds working with the music on the intro. And what a great ride after that... the patient cutting and timelapsed computer layout work. You really found an awesome balance in this video!
Thank you! I’m glad you felt what it was I hoping people would feel with this one.
at least the dog enjoyed the snow
She certainly did!
Absolutely bloody brilliant!!! What a star you are😀😀 Thank you for sharing your incredible talent and patience with us all. Simon. 😀😀😀😀
Thank you so much 😀
It was different but enjoyable to watch and loving the progress on Bradford Cathedral
Thank you. Enjoying the progress.
wow lets have more of this its helped to understand the process more easily
Yes I thought the slower pace helped with that. I wasn’t sure what regular viewers would think of the different format but it seems to be going down quite well…?
I can’t believe where 20 minutes went. This video is truly absorbing and mesmerising and there’s so much to take away and think about. Thank you so much Michael, a grand job
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you as always!
I love your dulcet Yorkshire tones, but watching this one this one was sooo peaceful.
I’m really glad you thought so!
I have really enjoyed your video and it really helps me with my recovery from my brain tumour and stroke as I try to get back to my modelling Thank you I mention my illness so you know who is watching and why thank you again 😊
Wishing you a full recovery.
Wishing you all the best!
@Chandwell thank you for the reply 😊
@philkirk4571 thank you for the reply
@philkirk4571 thank you for the reply I was an ex social media manager feedback is good 😊
Poetry in motion, so therapeutic. interspersed with a joyous dog, enjoying the snow, just because it's there (a life lesson for us all🤔🙏).
I'm sat here at just gone 05.00hrs feeling quite challenged, restless, in pain, my brain itching too, after physio and this video was just what I needed. Calming, distracting, mindfulness in activity.
I'm so tempted by 2mm and card modelling, but I know with my other challenges, I'll never complete my other modelling. Besides - without wishing to sound sycophantic - you're, litteraly, the master builder using these techniques, in this scale and gauge, I would struggle to even emulate your work.
👍😊✌️💜🙏😊
Thank you for these kind words. Hey, if you find yourself inspired - give it a go! You don't have to be perfect or even complete something. Just doing is enough!
@Chandwell You're most welcome ✌️👍💜 I need to get my plastic, resin and wooden buildings finished first and fiddle yard baseboards etc too. I might have a go then🤔🤞🤞
Impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this and the dog was a bonus. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nothing I can say,that others haven't already,but quite simply incredible craftsmanship👍
Thank you - that is very kind.
Good to see “Hello Mum” in the mix Michael!!! Intricate and beautiful build as always. Carol
Thank you Carol! See you next week at Doncaster!
@ really looking forward to it. See you there. 🙂
Man & scalpel in perfect harmony... splurge'arrific
Love the snow scenes with your hound, reminded me of the mid-eighties when our dog Butch was around, we had a huge snowfall and was a joy taking him across the playing field for a frolic... not soo much getting him back indoors with a tummy of icicles melting on the carpet 😂
Superb! Yes there was snow everywhere!
Always a joy to watch
Thank you!
Said it before. Outstanding mate. Nice to see the dog enjoying himself too. Arthur
Thanks Arthur!
I am Amazed.
Thank you, I hope!
Watched again and putting the tops on the buttresses is out of this world. Just so perfect.
They were fun. I worried I’d made them too fiddly at one point but they turned out ok.
Brilliant, just amazing to watch.
Thank you!
Once again, thank you for a masterclass in scratch building. Will admit I prefer your running commentary on videos, but the choice of soundtrack was excellent. Thank you and I look forward to the next instalment.
Thank you! This was a bit of an experiment so I am pleased that people liked it.
it always impresses me the level of detail you get in n gauge
Thank you. I can see a great many areas for improvement, but isn't that always the way... we are our own worst critics.
Iv been watching you a few years now and last year at 53 I bought my first lap top and printer and downloaded inkscape.your channel is what I watch for tutorials. Will never get to the level your at but its fun to try .
You say that but you’ve done the first steps, with practice you’ll be able to do what you want. I’m nowhere near Michael’s ability but I can make stuff that I wouldn’t have thought I could. Do what’s best for you and learn when you want, it’s a great no pressure hobby which can surprise you sometimes!
That is awesome! Make a start... you're never too old. And there is no pressure to be "good" - we each have our levels and we all can continue learning. I look at the work of many others and think "one day I want to be as good as that" but really it's the journey that is important, and fun.
Wow!
This is not a model railway construction video, this is a work of art!
A refreshingly different approach here Michael, and , to my mind, a resounding success.
The whole thing is so relaxing but keeps the information coming as normal, with the pictures speaking for themselves.
Obviously this approach cannot eork for every video, and we'd all miss your narration, but in this case your (bold?) experiment is a massive success.
As a bit of an ambient lover/player, I recognised the Zabriskie tracks, but the first one had me puzzled. Originaly thought it was a Penguin Cafe track that had slipped my mind but not 100% sure, and Shazam wasnt a great deal of help. Intrigued!
Loved it!
I love that you recognised that second track. I get all my music just via the UA-cam Creators royalty free list. The Zabriskie one was licensed under Creative Commons, so was free to use. The first one was free to use. It was called "Venkatesananda" by Jesse Gallagher - ua-cam.com/video/RnBCftRg2LM/v-deo.html
@Chandwell thank you Michael. A definite further listen to that one!
despite everyone switching to 3d printers, laser cutters and cricuts... watching you craft with cardstock and a knife, is so very refreshing and relaxing to watch.
I am pleased you like my more traditional methods. I really enjoy creating like this.
Michael, yet again, inspirational. I have started my first full layout, which is going to be a rural scene, but buildings are going to be required, and if I can produce structures half as good as yours I'll be happy.
Thank you!
Love that video: just working. No text!
Glad you liked it!
I almost felt like I was in a moment of contemplation sat in the cathedral, watching that. Great stuff!
Wow, thanks!
I do not know what to say! so I will simple WOW !!
Thank you!
Hi Michael, well that was lovely with my Sunday morning cuppa, I can see by some of the comments that has appealed to so many! The Cathedral is coming on beautifully mate, keep up the good work. I may even be tempted to take a trip to Bradford once it’s finished to see it for real!
Cheers Michael, John
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes - please come and see it. It would be great to meet you in person, John!
It’s like watching a master craftsman at work the level of detail is amazing love watching these videos well done Mike doing a brilliant job
Thank you!
@ your welcome
That was wonderful, Michael.
Thank you. Being always so inspired by your work, that means a lot.
Superb production, this is relaxing viewing yet we learn much from watching you work
Happy to hear that!
I didn't check in for a while - wow - what progress
It's coming on slowly but surely!
Perfectly edited video, perfect soundtrack, you really took us on the trip.
Thank you very much!
This has so much detail it's going to take two views...
The 1.5degrees (!) maintained at scale, just illustrates the ultra precision/ zen like patience.
The build-up of the window layers.
9:26 you did all that AND had time to take doggo to the MOON?!
Yes! The MOON!! That made me chuckle. Thank you for your kind words!
Thats one happy dog, nice to see. Your cutting curves is truly impressive; & so many of them! I would have messed up, probable after having put in enough work to be annoying.
The dog loved the snow! There are indeed a lot of curves on this building.
Can’t wait until it’s finished ❤
Me too! I hope I can pull it off!
Absolutely brilliant an inspiration to us all, keep up your extraordinary work and obvious skills
Thank you! Will do!
Really appreciate this! And the random doggy interludes 😂
I'm borrowing your methods to make a 1:150 fantasy airship w inkscape, print, glue, cut etc.. very fun!
That sounds awesome! I hope you will shar a picture once it is done!
Wow reality hit me when you compared the 10A with the tiny windows ' Magnificent Michael.
Michael, you must have the patience of a saint. Fantastic work. The amount of detail you have put in to the windows is unbelievable. George.
Thanks George!
Hi there I'm really enjoying watching the construction of the cathedral I'm looking forward to seeing it and you in September 😊
Wonderful! I hope I can get it done on time!
Wonderfull video! Congratulations for this work of art! From Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
Thank you so much 😀
What a glorious video.
Thank you!
your spaniel is as mental as mine!
She went completely bonkers in the snow. Loved it!
As usual. Incredible.
Thank you!
I'm in absolute awe with your work and talent of creativity.....brilliant!
Lloyd
Thanks so much 😊
I have finally got back into modelling and this is a timely reminder about taking your time and thinking clearly about the order of construction. Beautiful work as always.
Ps happy puppy was a wonderful point of contrast.
I popped the pup in to wake people up if they were starting to nod off!
Superb as always. Your work on those windows in particular is amazing!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing work. So good to get an insight into your techniques and work flow
Much appreciated! I am glad you found this format engaging.
This is wonderful, Michael. The project is shaping up nicely, and the video, with the slower pace and music, was very nice.
Thank you so much 😀
8 minutes in and I am amazed. Absolutely stupendous work.
Wow, thank you!
WOW! Thank you for taking us along on the journey.
Thank you for joining me on it!
A lovely, meditative video. Liked the interludes of your spanniel playing in the snow.
Glad you enjoyed this format. It was a bit of an experiment to see what people thought. The spaniel is crazy in the snow!
As always excellent job. Amazing to see
Thank you so much 😀
Good planning, sound engineering and extreme skill have produced a really excellent result. The window with the perpendicular tracery is breathtakingly beautiful. What a joy to behold.
Thank you very much!
Wow! That is really looking so smart. Well done!
Thank you!
Incredible work
Thank you. Making slow progress
Beautiful video, as always. Like you, I have used a scalpel for years for fine cutting, but I have recently bought two very similar small snap-off blade knives, one is made by Olfa and the other by NT-cutter. While the blades are not held quite as rigidly as the scalpel blades, they are not at all bad and they are super sharp. As almost all of your cutting is done with the extreme tip of the blade, the snap-off facility would, I think, be very useful and economical for you: not for all cases, but for some. While mine have 60 degree pointed blades, 30 degree alternatives are also available. Just a suggestion, but you might like to try. Best wishes.
Hank you for the tip. (Pun intended). I’ll look out for these and give them a try.
You are a very talented modeler. Simply amazing work.
Thank you so much 😀
Superb!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Beautiful model Michael. Such a joy to watch.
Thank you!
It’s looking great Michael. Well done chap.
Getting there slowly!
Stunningly good modelling, beautiful work
Thank you so much 😀
Another gripping and interesting build Michael, my layout is in 00 gauge and I was thinking how big would this Cathedral be if it was built in that scale!! Many thanks for sharing regards Barry. 👍👏
It would be about 1.4 metres long and 38cm tall!
@@Chandwell Wow I bet your glad its in N gauge (lol).
Michael. This is truly inspirational modelling, but please don't neglect Chandwell. Pete.
Thanks Pete. Chandwell is taking a bit of a hit at the moment as work has been so busy. I've been away from home for more nights than I have been AT home in January. With the Cathedral slipping behind and the September unveiling date looking a little too close for comfort, I am having to keep my attention there for the time being. That been said, the techniques etc are all the same as they would be if I were making a Chandwell building, so they should not be too bad. Did you see the Layout Highlights video at the end of December? That should have had an injection of Chandwell fun for you!
This window says it all. No comment necessary!
😀 Thank you! 🪟
great vlog nice build
Thanks 👍
Michael Great video finally found some time to watch it as a whole. Had seen it in small sections. Liking how the Cathedral is coming on. The difference in the type of stonework from older part to the later more modern section is good, it really show how the Cathedral has altered in time. Thanks Ian
Thanks Ian! Glad you got to watch it before Friday!
Another wonderful video! Never ceases to amaze me, what you are able to make from such humble materials, and at such a small scale! Thanks again for sharing!
Thank you very much!
Did you ever consider just making it out of matchsticks? You seem like a guy who really likes a challenge. Beautiful work! I can't wait to see the final reveal.
Haha thank you. I hope I can pull this off!
These days I would do it in a computer. No mess, no waste, no wondering, where to put it when done. 3D modelling is fun. Free in Blender too. If ever needed any scale could then have much the same sections printed out and assembled like a kit.
Thank you for watching
Stunning work as always, love the video style too. Keep up the great work
Thank you very much!
Wow, just wow.
Thank you!
Just wow!
Thank you!
Magnificent work. I have to admire your tweezer work on the buttresses - that's usually where said tiny part flies off somewhere for me! Mostly not to be found either. Twenty minutes well spent. Cheers.
Thank you very much! Yes those parts can jump away and never be seen again!
@@Chandwell Hi Michael. My membership gets paid from a card that has recently been compromised. It's all in hand with the bank. Not sure if you get notified of these things but the bank has been pinging my phone all evening! Changed it to a different card so I don't miss out on any cardboard shenanigans. Cheers
Absolutely brilliant
Thank you!
Incredible!
Thank you!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
7:37 I remember the snow day!
Ah yes!
I watched how you transferred photo to card stencil very impressive
Yes it's me again a further skill I will have to relearn 😂
Slow step by step and I am sure you will get there!
I liked this video, but I kept repeating to myself, "My name is Michael, and I'm..." over and over again. I actually enjoy hearing you narrate your process.
Hahah! Thank you.
This was really informative just to watch you build and learn. I need to make a concrete slab, have you found a scalescenes texture that you really like?
Scalescenes Grimy Concrete seems to work for me.
@@Chandwell Thank you.
I much prefer when there are comments.
Don't worry - I only do a non-talking music-based one maybe twice a year or so. I really enjoy making them, and sometimes it is nice to have a break from writing and recording scripts. Looking at the comments from this one, I think that this has been enjoyed by most. Regardless, back to normal next time.
@@Chandwell Even if you repeat part of the script from video to video, there is only so much to say about cutting windows, it does not matter to me, it is part of the ritual of watching your videos (some people attend mass every week where it is exactly the same text every time!)
You do voice over, that not so many creators do but I find way easier to understand (not native English speaker, aging ears) and you voice is agreeable to listen to.
You are very patient with all that detail. At that level, a little HOe locomotive could be built. I see you don’t really use temporary jigs for assembly, and you seem to line things up by eye..
I only occasionally use jigs. I design my buildings with interior supports that keep the whole thing nice and square. The theory is you just glue it together and it automatically becomes square and true. It doesn’t always work like that in which case I make or use clamps and jigs but most of the time, it’s just as you see in this video.
I saw the square floor pieces, but I meant more the horizontal courses of the piers or columns, where I think you pushed them level with the end of a ruler or something.
I would suggest to set up a main north-south and east-west centreline, so as you build outwards, the overall length and width does not begin to creep out so that at some point something that is calculated to tie in will not tie in. This dimensional creep definitely happens.
Right nice.... What's the reason for a weeping chancel, please...?
I don’t think anyone knows for sure but there are a lot of interesting theories, one being that it represents the tilt of Christ’s head on the cross. Maggie Myers from the Cathedral talks about it in this video of mine. If you follow the link in that video’s description I’ve also linked to an interesting white paper on the subject. HOW big is this going to be? Embarking on a modelling journey - Bradford Cathedral

How you did the glue botle ?
This was bought from a woman called Ann Peak many years ago but she is no longer in business.
I thought that you had a Cricut to cut out your carboard buildings?
No. I do everything by hand. No machines. Only Inkscape to do the drawing. The hand-cutting is my most favourite part of the whole process. I find it very relaxing.
@@ChandwellThank You for your quick reply I must be thinking of someone else
And I agree with you on your reply it is certainly relaxing
Hi michael do you have a link for the angle template?
Hello. What angle template do you mean?
