It could be argued that the main thing which caused the Singles to become obsolete, wasn't the performance of locomotives like the Atlantics (4-4-2), but rather the development in carriage types. When the Singles first came into service, the type of passenger cars they pulled, were relatively small six wheel cars, or very early small bogie cars. However, as development progressed, by even the early 1900's, designs had progressed to the point that rolling stock was getting bigger, and by extension much more heavy. Having a single drive axle, regardless of how large the wheels are on that axle, would mean you have a rather limited amount of tractive effort that could be used, and in turn, you'd have severe limitations on the capability of the locomotive. Meaning that while the idea "worked" it didn't really work as long when compared with other designs. The total life span being just 37 years at best, and 21 years at worst. (1870-1916 vs 1895-1916). Compare this with some of the 0-6-0 goods engines from around the same period, which continued working well into the 20th century, and in some cases, well into the nationalization period; and well you can see the issue. It may be a rather nice locomotive, but as designs go, it's something of a 'dead end'. In that there really wasn't much anyone could do to actually 'improve' the design. Other companies did try this from time to time, with limited success... but given that by 1928 the whole idea was abandoned by the various railroads, and not expanded on further (as happened with other locomotive designs with multiple drivers), then the design was largely obsolete by the time it was introduced. Meaning, neat idea, but couldn't keep up with developments.
Sam. When you ask Rapido for the missing splasher screws, ask for a spare front bogie spring as well so it can be cut (or ground) down to reduce resistance. Keep the original in the accessories bag . If you offer to report back to Rapido the revised optimal spring size, I'm sure they will send you one. 👍👍👍
The capacitors are for DCC stay-alive (powerpack). It's pretty common to use a DC-to-DC converter along with low voltage supercapacitors to implement a DCC stay-alive. The capacitors are charged to their rated voltage, and when needed, the DC/DC boosts the capacitor output to a higher DC voltage. You can buy a controller like that separately, like the Zimo STACO series.
We don't really have any of these type steam engines like this in the United States. But these types (emily) always reminded me of the old steam powered paddle boats on the mississippi. With the one big driver wheel almost resembles the paddle on the side of a steam ship.
We do have singles in the US - C. P. Huntington is a 4-2-4 tank locomotive, on display at the California State Railroad Museum. Its sister locomotive, T. D. Judah, was later converted into a 4-2-2 tender locomotive which is the same wheel configuration as the Stirling Single.
@@joeleboeuf But US had such a variety of unique locomotives. Colorful streamliners galore. Massive articulated freight locomotives, and all-purpose 4-8-4s. All the way down to Shay, Heisler and Climax logging locomotives.
@@PhilBender612 Also look up the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad No. 999, that's probably the closest to being the American counterpart. 4-4-0 with 7.2ft driving wheels. Alleged to be the first locomotive to reach 100 mph.
@@kkobayashi1 I'd say our diesels are cool as well. The early streamliners definitely had some elegance to them, and even the more modern road switchers, while almost utilitarian to a fault, are hard *not* to imagine pulling (and/or pushing) a massive freight train.
Popped into my local model railway shop today and was blown away to find that he had two of these!! Needless to say that he only has one now. The only downer was I too don’t have any screws to fit the front splashers. Great video as ever.
i've got mine & i love it. Though mine was missing the screws to attach the splashers so i contacted rapido who sent some spares in the mail & i've now got them attached. The splashers dont catch on the wheels for my layout as i have very gental curves
I doubt that the Stirling single will be beaten by anything this year, this might just be the best model I've seen on your channel. It seems to me that Rapido are making a serious attempt at becoming the best manufacturer in the UK! Very thorough review as always Sam.
@@Jay1330 I love the livery and design of that one ! (Jones Goods ) , in my opinion , these three are tied as they are good quality wise and detail wise .
One thing I found astonishing on this model is the crosshead detail. If you look carefully, the crosshead is steel-coloured while the sliding bearing surfaces are bronze-coloured. I have never seen this level of detail on the motion gear of a OO/HO scale steam engine before. Astonishing!
Re firebox lighting - When a steam loco is actually moving (other than possibly shuffling itself round a loco shed) then the door to the firebox MUST BE CLOSED! Otherwise the entire fire (coals etc gets sucked through the boiler and out the chimney). However if the door closes off the fire completely there may be insufficient air (i.e. oxygen) entering the firebox - so most firebox doors are constructed with flaps, smaller openings, gaps round the side etc which can be adjusted by the fireman to let some oxygen in - and its through these gaps which the glow of the firebox should be seen - not a whacking great glowing opening. This model by Rapido therefore does a great job of replicating how a real steam loco firebox looks when its in motion - unlike pretty much every other model with 'firebox glow' on the market.
I have one, I lucked out and mine does have the screws. I have loved these since I found a Kitmaster one assembled at a show 20 years ago. It had gotten damaged, but I still have it. I have not been able to run this one yet, my layout is under construction. Watching the video is mesmerizing
Been hoping we’d get to see a Stirling Single on this channel one day. Honestly my favorite steam engine ever there just so majestic to look at and we’re a key step into the future of Express engines of the LNER.
@ Oh definitely this model is definitely worth the price. I’m actually was a bit surprised during the running part Emily was either in the background or pulling a set of coaches as well. An amazing video and can’t wait to see what you do next.
Sam . Thanks very much for your review. From your review and comments here i learnt that these locomotives had arrived in Melbourne but sold out at one shop. I quckly made phone contact with my usual Melbourne supplier , who usually contact me when my pre order arrives. Seems they lost track of my pre order, but phoning them luckily confirmed one sound dcc and one standard DC version were still available. I had them reserve the DC one for me and picked it up today. Close to missing out but saved by my respone spurred by your information. Cost $505. So thanks.
One thing that's never mentioned nowadays in model railways is - imagination. I used to get enormous pleasure in the past, operating my Hornby Dublo die cast locos. Just as much as I do running my latest highly detailed offerings, because I had imagination. OK, if you want a model to put on you mantle piece and gaze at them for hours on end, the new stuff is great. But if you want to run a layout to a timetable & try and mimic a real railway system, then the new offerings won't stand up to the 'wear & tear', they simply arent made robust enough.
Really enjoyed this, hits all the marks for me; -A fantastic product, which you were suitably impressed by. -Finding and reporting genuine issues but not overdoing it. -Generally objective and consistent tests across all model reviews, allowing honesty. Keep them coming, they’re among the best product reviews on youtube regardless of which hobby!
Yes, this is a stunning model that is faithful to the prototype, which I saw a few months ago in York. Interestingly, mine also came missing the screws and Rapido got them to me here in the US in just a few days. Their customer service is very good.
A fabulous model of one of my favourite locos, the original release is beyond my reach but this has appeared just as I'm in a position where I can't justify it! Life is all about timing.
Great review as always Sam! I treated myself to the locomotion models version, since I've only ever seen the real one with the larger tender, and... wow. Just an incredible model. Amazing performance and absolutely beautiful. Glad you liked yours too!
The final trio of superbly elegant models and Hattons and Hornby Genesis coaches looked stunning. This was a thoroughly enjoyable video. I haven’t run my Rapido Stirling yet; I’ll have to watch out for missing splashes packs and the front bogie problem. Thank you once again Sam
I converted an Emily by printing a boiler cover, and making two working amps on the front. Installed a DCC in the tender with the speaker half out the bottom.
I used to date Patrick Stirling’s great, great, great granddaughter. She was always trying to find a model of the Single but at the time no one offered one.
Stirling Singles are definitely some of my absolute favourite engines. They're so elegant, and are very distinctive compared to most other engines. The model is probably too expensive and delicate for me though, so I'd probably go for Emily. 😅
Hi Sam. Yes, lovely loco but, like you, screws for the splashers were missing. To be fair, once I'd informed Rapido, they dispatched some to me in short order. Splashers now fitted but yet to test positioning of them on some R2 curves. Firebox flicker though is barely detectable unless you're at the perfect angle to view. Mine is DCC fitted and the sound is fine. Overall very happy with it. A great loco.
Thanks Steve - hopefully I can get some too and give it a try on R2! Yes the firebox glow is an odd design... not sure why they set out to do that... but I have to say I quite enjoy the subtlety of the effect! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I haven't been able to run my sterling single yet, so great to know it has a firebox glow as i thought it didn't. And good to know about that front boogie. Think I'll fit a small spring. Thanks for a great review.
Hey up Sam , first time caller , really enjoy the channel , just wondering if you ever have or intend to review a Cavalex product , they look quite good from what I’ve seen ?
I'm surpised you didn't buy one sooner Sam (massive price aside), and it looks absolutely top notch. Rapido and GNR seems to be a good mix, and hopefully the J13 follows suit. I could see them making a model of "Henry Oakley" at some point in the future.
As of today, mine is in US customs coming from Hereford Models; excellent, fast service. I have generally made it a habit to wait for your reviews before springing for a new loco, but other reviews suggested going ahead. Whew! Good on ya, lad. With the trailing wheels being powered, wouldn't that make the model itself a 4-4-0? Update Feb 3rd: It's here, and a beauty! And, for once, I didn't have to make any ,major repairs or alterations to run it successfully! (There is one lamp bracket to be reattached, but that's it, until I get the non-enclosed screws for the splashers.) Well done Rapido! Update Feb 5th: More parts to re-install. Bothe of the braces at the front of the smoke box on the deck were found in the plastic wrapping. Perhaps it's time to start attaching these models to a base like the Cavalex 60 was. Also, I'm considering adding a little weight under the front of the boiler as this loco will not pull five empty wagons up a 2.5% grade without both drivers slipping completely. If that doesn't work, out comes the snippers for the spring on the front bogie.
finally they produced models of one of the most gorgeous steam locomotives there is in Britain! this is gorgeous! I hope someday soon I'll get my hands on one even tho in not British but Hungarian great Video Sam as always!
Finally, you got the Stirling Single model from Rapido, Sam. It is a fantastic detailed model and its performance is superb. I do have to agree with you about the mechanism, it is a pretty good mechanism but to get its pick-ups cleaned is going to be difficult because of the break rigging being in the way. It may be expensive but still, it is a fantastic model from Rapido.
That Sterling Single is only one way to describe it, A WORK OF ART MASTERPIECE!!!! Perhaps the MOST BEAUTIFUL locomotive in your ENTIRE collection at the moment. And you have some VERY BEAUTIFUL locomotives, much like your Oxford N7, Bachmann City Of Truro, Hornby King Class, Hornby J-36, Rapido Tram Engines, Bachmann Caledonian, Bachmann Improved Precedent Class, Accurascale Manor, Hornby and Rapido Lyons, Heljan Beyer Garratt, Broadway Limited Santa Fe Blue Goose Hudson, and of course the BEAUTIFUL Jones Goods, but this is on a whole other level and blows them all out of the water. Gorgeous locomotive, and 8.5 is bad because that score is gonna be VERY TOUGH to beat! :)
Great video. The 4 splasher screws were missing on mine too. I called Rapido and they told me that a batch had been erroneously shipped without them. They quickly sent me some and I fitted the splashers (bit fiddley). When moved to the outermost position, they don't seem to obstruct the wheels on 2nd radius curves. That position isn't quite prototypical but it still looks OK to my eye.
Hi Sam - always love the channel! Are you planning to build any further locos yourself? I found this by far one of your most fascinating and remarkable achievements.
I've seen the real thing at York in 2023 and I think the fascination behind the Stirling Single is the combination of the striking green livery, combined with the fact that it is the basis for Emily (which makes it recognizable to the children) and the huge driving wheel. I stood next to this engine and was blown away by the size of it and the very impressive speed of 85mph back in the late 1870s. I wish it would be restored to operational condition. This model from Rapido looks absolutely stunning. I had no idea it was all metal including the tender. Though the lack of screws for the splashers and the inbalance is very annoying. Though for the latter you can adjust or trim the spring a little bit and maybe improve it like that. But yeah, I would contact Rapido to get a new detail pack as I am curious how the tolerance of the splashers are on second radius curves and inclines. But besides, innovative model with the connector especially for way back then. I can see why it would have cost as much as it did back then. I still think it's worth it. But yeah all in all, just like the Jones Goods, 9/10 for me. Rapido is upping their game I think after the sloppy mess of the E-Class and the 15xx Pannier. Their next big project, the SECR 01 and later on the USATC-S160 will be quite promising if this one is anything to go by. I was really looking forward to this review and it was worth the wait. What a fantastic model and a in-dept review, Sam 👍👍
Got one with the large Stirling tender, yes it is a beautiful model, had mine since summer 2018,from the NRM.Came with screws fitted for the front bogie splashers, but those side chains for the buffer beams..very difficult to fit, tiny short lugs to fit in the locating holes, still have not fitted them. The axle ends are not blackened on mine, and the accessory pack contains an etch with four circular discs to fit over the driving axle ends ,the two extra just in case you lose one or two, haven't fitted these either!
Absolutely excellent. I have one of the originals in one of the excellent display cases I purchase from Gaz Oakley. I have had the accessory pack fitted by Steve Johnson of Grimy Times fame as I find fitting so fiddly. Thanks for the review Sam.
I have always found these engines beautiful! Pre ordered the day I they were available to do so.Dont yet have a dccc system so can’t test it. I’m going to have one oddball layout being in America. This thing should fit right in with my Shay’s, big boy, challenger, and one modern heritage unit diesel 😂
From seeing other reviews the front bogie spring is an issue. On some it lifts the front drivers, on others it lifts the under cab driving axle. If the locating screw is a self tapping then backing off or screwing in should work as long as the pivoting is not effected. Adding weight round the motor inside the boiler will bring the big wheels down, or shorten the spring in increments of 1/4 or 1/2 turns. A shim under the front spring will bring the back wheels down. It obviously needs the easiest of solutions because wear may tilt the balance of the loco through time used.
Not my preferred era but all reviews are appreciated. Quality, within & across manufacturers, is broader than ever I imagined.. life seemed so much simpler, as a 10 yo.
Hi Sam, lovely loco and review,,I have been waiting to here your opinion of this Single for yonks, so marvellous and glad you like it. I was lucky enough to pick up one of the first batch at an Antique auction just over 2yrs ago...at a steal 👍.... After seeing the balance issue with the front bogey and driver I've tested mine and its not the same , yes the front bogey is quite nicely sprung , but pushing down on the smokebox shows there is no movement on the main drive wheels at all. Loco just pivots on them and lifts the rear wheels..in theory it should pull better, so later this evening I'll stick all my teaks behind it and see how many it will pull before wheelslip occurs......👍 Great review and pleased you loved this model...course its a favourite...😄
Thanks so much Mark - that's very interesting - the spring is mightily strong on mine - is that not the case with the first batch then? Thanks for sharing, Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@SamsTrains Just had another look, I would say the spring is a nice bit weaker..so placing it on the track the front bogey moves up a couple of mm and the main driver wheels touch the rails ok. If I put a piece of paper under the front bogey it very nearly hits the top of its suspension travel and yet drive wheels still sit correctly on the rails....
@@SamsTrains 8 Hornby Teak's , runs well , lovely wheel slip on starting then perfectly fine on straights and minor curves but a bit of wheel slip again on a series of 'S' curves. Bends and curves are majority 3rd radius plus some 2nd radius....Don't think it would pull 8 coaches up Gordon's hill...but it wouldn't be far away, Thanks again Sam
Fantastic! What a sight to see this model in action. Good work as always Sam. It was worth the wait for your opinion. And just the model you need after the Leader Class disaster. Guess you can call this a...STIRLING Review! ... I'll throw myself out!
This is a stunning locomotive with excellent quality. I do think I would have fixed the front 2 axel assembly spring by cutting as you suggested but I know after paying over 200 for it I think I can let you off the hook. One question I had that you did not answer was whether you could see the fire box effect under the locomotive as in the real deal. I enjoyed the video so great review and introduction to this loco, Jersey Bill
I think so too - I might look at swapping the spring out for a weaker one... just in case it goes wrong then I can revert back haha! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'd love to think of them following this up with a Dean Single😀 I don't have the type of layout where this loco could stretch its legs but I'm still very tempted!
Just minutes ago Rapido announced their intention to produce Caledonian 123 with twin axle drive like the Srirling Single. Via a UA-cam short. So much easier when the prototype exists and can be accurately scanned.
I managed to get hold of this loco it runs great my only problem was with the connection on the loco i only pulled them apart a couple of times the only trouble was i had to put some epoxy on the loco side to stop it moving and having a good connection apart from that runs great.
This model is an absolute stunner. It's definitely one of Rapido's best 👍. I'm planning to have my review finished and uploaded by the end of the week.
So I have a previous release or the single from the first run ( actually two, one for parts and the other to run and use obviously ). I can say that the issue of springing must be a new issue as the old ones sit very flat and planted on the track. Both the donar and the main one do not have the issue, it must be a new release issue. I’ll take a look when mine arrives. I may turn the parts one into a later domed single
This makes me think I’d love to see a new tool of the Caledonian Single. I don’t have any other Caledonian stock but I’d certainly buy one given the price was reasonable.
Yes, the Jones Goods box was marked as 'Scottish Legends' which strongly suggests we may see some more Scottish locos and I'm hoping we get some in the gorgeous Caledonian livery.

My tablet says it loves watching you, and so do I!
Sam, keep doing those reviews! Otherwise what will I watch when I eat?👏 👌 👍
i've got mine & i love it. Though mine was missing the screws to attach the splashers so i contacted rapido who sent some spares in the mail & i've now got them attached. The splashers dont catch on the wheels for my layout as i have very gental curves
Helpful comment,thank you!
I doubt that the Stirling single will be beaten by anything this year, this might just be the best model I've seen on your channel. It seems to me that Rapido are making a serious attempt at becoming the best manufacturer in the UK! Very thorough review as always Sam.
I think the J70 was better , more detail but okay
@ yeah I completely forgot about that, also the Jones Goods could be a good candidate
@@Jay1330 I love the livery and design of that one ! (Jones Goods ) , in my opinion , these three are tied as they are good quality wise and detail wise .
I sure do love green.
Great comment, I've always wondered about that! Makes much more sense to model it in the closed position.
I have one, I lucked out and mine does have the screws. I have loved these since I found a Kitmaster one assembled at a show 20 years ago. It had gotten damaged, but I still have it. I have not been able to run this one yet, my layout is under construction. Watching the video is mesmerizing
Been waiting for this model, too! Thanks for the update, I just ordered it with flicker firebox, stay alive and cab light. Cannot wait to get it!
Been hoping we’d get to see a Stirling Single on this channel one day.
Honestly my favorite steam engine ever there just so majestic to look at and we’re a key step into the future of Express engines of the LNER.
haha yeah it's about time - majestic really is the word!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@
Oh definitely this model is definitely worth the price.
Really enjoyed this, hits all the marks for me;
-A fantastic product, which you were suitably impressed by.
-Finding and reporting genuine issues but not overdoing it.
-Generally objective and consistent tests across all model reviews, allowing honesty.
Keep them coming, they’re among the best product reviews on youtube regardless of which hobby!
It's here! And it's beautiful!!
It sure is!! :D
Well done Sam I'm glad ye finally managed to get a Stirling Single since they ate my favourite class of British steam locomotive
Ahh fantastic - so glad you were happy with it too - well worth it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
On the tender, CNR does it say or GNR I don't know. 33:52
Sold out within 1 day of your video going live 🤣 I hope they do another run of this model, it's the best steamer I've seen for some time.
I converted an Emily by printing a boiler cover, and making two working amps on the front. Installed a DCC in the tender with the speaker half out the bottom.
The finish on that loco looks amazing
I used to date Patrick Stirling’s great, great, great granddaughter. She was always trying to find a model of the Single but at the time no one offered one.
Ok . This is DEFINITELY one of the contenders. For being my FIRST train.
How lovely.. that is some quality work right here
hahaha fantastic - yeah you won't be disappointed with one of these!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Stirling Singles are definitely some of my absolute favourite engines. They're so elegant, and are very distinctive compared to most other engines. The model is probably too expensive and delicate for me though, so I'd probably go for Emily. 😅
I don't blame you - amazing aren't they! Yeah quite delicate... Emily is much simpler and cheaper for sure!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Man, I have never seen a more beautiful loco than this.
I'm willing to bet this is going to be in Sam's 2025 edition of Best Model Trains!
I agree Louie - possibly the most beautiful I've ever seen too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Good god this makes me 10x more excited to get my hands on the one I've got in my TMC Trunk.
Given the open nature of the cab, it really needs Engineer and Fireman figures!
I'm surpised you didn't buy one sooner Sam (massive price aside), and it looks absolutely top notch. Rapido and GNR seems to be a good mix, and hopefully the J13 follows suit. I could see them making a model of "Henry Oakley" at some point in the future.
I was seriously tempted - but glad I waited and got this one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I hope someday soon I'll get my hands on one even tho in not British but Hungarian
great Video Sam as always!
Probably the only locomotive I would ever consider paying over £200 for. Such a stunner and much better than a lot of other £200+ models available.
Yeah absolutely - this is what a £200 loco should look like!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I wish it was available in N scale. I visited it at the NRM two years ago. It's one of the most beautful pieces of machinery I've ever seen!
Is this the same single wheeler you printed yourself? Great review Sam!
Hi Sam - always love the channel! Are you planning to build any further locos yourself? I found this by far one of your most fascinating and remarkable achievements.
I recieve mine tomorrow i am so excited, greetings from Mexico
It’s nice to see your model of the problem class Sam! Nice video
Finally we get the Emily review Sam! 🎉
I have an inkling she’ll definitely end up in the Top 5 models this year ❤
haha absolutely - got there in the end!!
You must be thrilled to hear that Rapido just announced the Caledonian Railway Single 123!
What a looker 😮. I think I would have to sort that bogie spring out, it would drive me potty even if the loco ran perfectly.
Not a train modeller Sam but what a very comprehensive and well thought out manual
I received my model of this locomotive over a week ago. A beautiful looking model
Fantastic to hear that - amazing aren't they!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The Stirling Single looks magnificent hauling a rake of Hattons GNR six-wheelers. I hope a new batch of these coaches is made.
When you reviewed inside the model, I thought the wires were just pieces of string.
Wow very beautiful. I want one of those. I got a new Amtrak train I'll make a video of it soon. Your the best as always. Trains for life.
This stirling single is a stunning and a splendid loco! Thank you for reviewing it Sam!❤
It's a pleasure - she really is! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Absolutely excellent. I have one of the originals in one of the excellent display cases I purchase from Gaz Oakley. I have had the accessory pack fitted by Steve Johnson of Grimy Times fame as I find fitting so fiddly.
Thanks for the review Sam.
I got a good chuckle from the naming of your hand-built locomotive your “Problem Class”!! 😆
Single wheelers are such lookers, and this one is no exception, saw the real No.1 at the NRM years ago, she’s a beauty for sure!
They really are - I remember seeing her too - gorgeous!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Not my preferred era but all reviews are appreciated. Quality, within & across manufacturers, is broader than ever I imagined.. life seemed so much simpler, as a 10 yo.
Glad you liked it anyway - I always think a quality model is enjoyable whatever it is!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Excellent review, Sam. Please could you give us an update on the servicing aspect when you're brave enough to have a go at it?!
Cheers,
Tim
Thanks for sharing,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It appears the spring on mine is well designed to keep the bogey on the track with no lifting or taking the weight off the main drive wheels ...
I have just dug out a copy of "Model Railway Constructor " dated February 1979 and cost a massive 40p. Interesting stuff inside.
Thanks for sharing this with me Sam , I truly appreciate it very much ❤️😎👍
It's a pleasure John!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is an Absolutely Stunning Model. Definetly a good choice on Rapidos Part for bringing it back.
Thanks Stan it sure is - a very good choice!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Fantastic! What a sight to see this model in action.
Good work as always Sam. It was worth the wait for your opinion. And just the model you need after the Leader Class disaster.
Guess you can call this a...STIRLING Review!
... I'll throw myself out!
Absolutely - seeing her in action is stunning - a huge relief after the Leader!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Randomly decided to watch this at .25 playback speed. Absolutely hilarious for reasons i cannot describe. Also lovely loco
@@SamsTrainsGood plan, Sam!
That is so pretty I want it when I get a bigger house and get ho trains
I managed to get hold of this loco it runs great my only problem was with the connection on the loco i only pulled them apart a couple of times the only trouble was i had to put some epoxy on the loco side to stop it moving and having a good connection apart from that runs great.
Absolutely can’t wait for mine to turn up - I sprung for the Locomotion version, preferred the tender on that one.
Ahh fantastic you were able to get one - I don't think you'll be disappointed!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I can remember the real one when it visited the Great Central Railway. A beautiful loco as is the model. .
This model is an absolute stunner. It's definitely one of Rapido's best 👍.
I'm planning to have my review finished and uploaded by the end of the week.
Yeah definitely - mind blowing in every way!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Rapido Caley single now available to pre-order...!

Mine came in last week, and I absolutely love it. Bit tricky in reverse, but I like running engines forward anyway.
Much as I would’ve liked the original release, maybe Rapido can announce the 80s tender on its own. Best of both worlds, uh, eras.
We need American singles in HO. Ya hear me, Bachmann, HO singles. C. P. Huntington’s a good place to start.
Thanks David so glad you like it - ahh well at least it's okay forwards!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
249 last one they did at NRM,toy fares were trying to sell around 750 last one I saw, glad they re released it...nice model but i just purchased the Hornby black five with sound flickering firebox working lamps and steam for 287....
NEM couplelers?
A beautiful loco and well worth the wait. Any chance in the future if showing it to us again with splashers fitted and the front spring trimmed or replaced to demonstrate increased performance? Cheers!
Yeah sure - I'm hoping Rapido will send me some screws and then I can give it a go!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ordered the Locomotion models exclusive model the day it was announced still waiting, im excited not sure id order through locomotion again this has just made me more excited tbh.
Did you see Lawries Video on detailing up those LNER teaks?
That sounds good I'll have to look that up!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
most beautiful and graceful steam loco ever built......and great model too.....cheers.....but my cupboard is "full".....haha
What a beautiful loco. Could you not replace the spring on the front bogie with a slightly weaker one? Perhaps that would solve the traction problems.
That is an absolutely beautiful steam engine. Probably like most, my introduction to this locomotive was on Thomas And Friends. I run N Scale, I would love to find this locomotive in that scale
Hi Sam, I think I saw all the engines in the background. It was the Caledonian single in LMS Maroon and Caledonian Blue, & Stephenson's rocket. Hopefully I got them all right.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
