    I had to replace the all plastic intake manifold on my 1999 Town car at around 95000 miles with the updated manifold.Lucky for me that mine just started with a small crack and a small leak but i have read of others that had a total blowout on the road so if your looking at a Town Car or any ford product between 1996 to 2001 with the 4.6 then you need to check the front of the manifold as the original one will be all plastic and the updated one will be aluminum across the front.If you find one with the original all plastic manifold and it is in such good shape with no leaks you decide to buy then have the updated manifold installed right away because it's not if but when it will fail and it will fail.
    The 4.6 was designed with a plastic intake manifold, and from model years 1996 to 2001, this manifold was prone to failure.
    The plastic is subjected to thousands of heat/cool cycles, in which the manifold will expand and contract. Ford designed the earlier manifolds with the alternator bracket mounted right into the plastic, which puts a great deal of stress on the material. As a result, it can crack and split without warning, especially at the front or rear.
    In addition, the fittings for the heater hose (at rear) and coolant temperature sensor (at front) can loosen and eventually fail. In either case, pressurized coolant will leak from the failure point and immediately cause the vehicle to overheat. In the case of the fittings, coolant may weep and puddle for months around the fitting (and often in a fuel injector well) before it finally gives way.
    Past model year 2001, Ford addressed this with a newly designed manifold that uses cast aluminum at the failure points and a redesigned thermostat mount. Unfortunately, if yours has failed and you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, it won't do you much good.

    • @brianheaven6237
      @brianheaven6237  5 років тому +1

      For my 1997, the common problems were the coolant leak from the intake manifold and failed air bags in the rear suspension. I only had the manifold problem, and the updated design replacement manifold never failed.

    • @dyoel182
      @dyoel182 5 років тому +1

      @@brianheaven6237 Rear air bags are super common. That's why several difference companies sell the replacement springs if you don't feel like taking a pair from a Crown Vic or Marquis.

      My 01 was like that I think I took my car to my mechanic twice because of that crack it would leak and drip into the spark plugs so eventually my car would start to shake up at a stop get the codes for a cylinder misfires after the 2nd time I finally got it fixed it was a pricey job but definitely needed.

    Beautiful car! I knew a livery service driver who replaced one around 2001 with a $40K Cadillac with a V8 Northstar engine. It did not work out well maintenance wise, so back he went to Lincolns. He’d run it 24/7, changing the oil every two weeks. I still see him around, still driving a Town Car.
    I had a gf at the time who needed a ride to a Dr.’s appointment. I arranged for the livery guy to take her, explaining that he‘d arrive with a new Cadillac limo. Next day she complained that it wasn’t a limo! Not luxurious enough I assume...

    The last true American large luxury car with a full frame, V8, rear drive and true duals (from the manifold back, not from mid-point back). I bought my 1998 brand new, Green Charcoal with camel interior, which now just turned 121,000 miles. No issues or part changes until beyond 100,000. The alternator, AC clutch fan, spark plugs and coils then air compressor. I also changed the air springs for Arnott as the compressor failed to play things safe. Started with front suspension components, upper/lower ball joints, tie rod and drag link ends with shocks on the way. None of which were bad, simply staying ahead of things. All OEM Motorcraft parts by the way. If you by cheap parts, expect cheap quality/short life. So you can see how reliable, not to mention extremely simple these cars are. I hate it when owners swap the air ride for coil springs! Considering no tool other than a jack are required to remove them. Pull the pin, push down and smack the bottom. Twenty-minutes per side and another half hour on the compressor. Done. And don't tell me they ride better because I've road in and driven my uncles 2001 with steel springs.

      @@jco5679 I had to replace the all plastic intake manifold on my 1999 Town car at around 95000 miles with the updated manifold.Lucky for me that mine just started with a small crack and a small leak but i have read of others that had a total blowout on the road so if your looking at a Town Car or any ford product between 1996 to 2001 with the 4.6 then you need to check the front of the manifold as the original one will be all plastic and the updated one will be aluminum across the front.If you find one with the original all plastic manifold and it is in such good shape with no leaks you decide to buy then have the updated manifold installed right away because it's not if but when it will fail and it will fail.

      Hi Ian. I cheated a bit and made them from wood, then painted it silver to look fancy. They are held in place just with heavy duty velcro, using the hook side to grab the OEM carpet. The velcro is about 1 inch wide, and has it's own adhesive (probably from Home Depot). As an update, in my newest Towncar, I just put the velcro on the bottom of the storage bins and didn't bother with the frame at all.

      The car that you see in the video was one with a wrecking yard title, and it had a lot of electrical problems so I sold it. I later bought a 2004 one owner town car, and it has worked out very well. I used to take my 1997 Town Car on very long road trips, from Seattle to Mexico and from Seattle to Yellowstone with no problems at all and it's very comfortable. I plan to take a similar trip in the 2004 this month.
