@@leonorglezdelcampo7299 thank you! I will look for any other work he’s done. He blew everyone else off the screen in every scene he was in. I think he made Charles seem more human too. I’m a new fan 😊
I love how Diana listened to a slew of 80's pop tunes prior to marrying Charles, from Blondie to Duran Duran. While the music fades for a while, she rediscovers it years later, illustrating her finding her passion again!
I keep coming back to this scene because of the music. Kudos to Martin Phipps for having so much attention to the details and in helping to drive the storytelling with the music. It was eerie and looming...quite a contrast to the fairy tale wedding everyone thought it was. Also whoever thought to make and actually made the visualizations of the individual instruments of this video should be praised as well.
the cherry on the cake is honestly the narration from the real wedding of the infamous ‘here is the stuff of which fairytales are made’ over this beautifully composed piece- breathtaking.
The first scene where Charles and Diana meet is also spectacular. The way the music starts the moment he sees her face clearly for the first time... and it feels like this is a moment you ought to remember.
Solitary vocal= Diana’s cry for help Low string chords= the Crown In the music, these low string chords (the crown) drown out the solitary vocals (Diana’s voice and cry). The crown over powered her and left her forgotten in the background just like the song does at the end. Beautiful. We need more of these videos in the future.
On a side note, the production of this video was really well done. The graphics of the video helps someone who is not used to cinematic scores visualize the sounds through shapes and patterns. A great way for someone to learn!
It physically shows counterpoint being used in music, which is used in classical music all the time. I love this type of music, it's like several different view points being played ,emotionally , separate from each other yet together they create a mood forshadowing of whats to come in the future, brilliant!....
This track is called Fairytale and is probably my favorite out of the album, also this sequence, the tragedy, the momentum building and then just cuts to black ASLO "Edge of Seventeen" playing right after this???? Come on!! This episode goes down and my favorite out of the series.
Whoaa that's actually cool and kinda ironic in a way, it does and looks like she's going into a fairytale(being in with the Royal's) when in reality she's going into a nightmare(leading to her death) and that scary undertone in the music being covered with calming nice voices and instruments is just *chef's kiss* 😘
@@nairagar7338 Truth. But the original fairytales are actually quite frightening so that’s another layer of the fairytale story - Diana just had no way of knowing she was walking into more of a Grimm’s fairytale than a Disney fairytale. That image of her slowly walking from the light into that darkened hallway will stay with me. The whole scene’s just heartbreaking and that haunting score is like a character in itself. Note how that bone chilling baseline comes in just as the veil falls over her face. And Stevie Nicks’ isolated vocal from Edge of Seventeen when the screen fades to black? Wow. Especially interesting that the same song is used early in the ep to completely different effect when Diana and her friends go out dancing to celebrate her engagement. The difference between the two uses of that song also sums up the journey from a Disney to Grimm’s fairytale. Just a brilliant episode of a brilliant series, and the music is absolutely central to it.
I love this, To me those six notes sounded like a sobbing, an internal sobbing at least. The music of the scene of the spiral stairs sounds like a cry for help.
"How this is already a tragedy unfolding and not a happy day" UUGGGGGGGHHHHHH SEASON 5!!!!! I want it to come out so bad but I'm also not ready to cry 😭
Martin has been so underrated for years! Some of his best work is not even on streaming platforms, so glad he's finally getting the spotlight he deserves.
The Season 3/4 soundtracks are fantastic to have on in the background if you have a pile of work to get through. They’re stimulating yet relaxing at the same time!
This is why this show, especially this season in particular, was so fantastic. The devil is in the details, and the music in this scene has always stood out to me. The explanation really makes sense and such fantastic work!
To think that this art form is so overlooked astounds me. Music tells a story without words. If you’re looking and open enough it can radiate into your own soul. Regardless of ones status- two completely different people can listen to the same composition and can become connected for just a brief moment. Everything the composer said is exactly how I internalized this segment.
It's an exquisite piece of score writing. The high pitched strings that drop down and other elements are reused in other scenes as well. The Math involved for music to precisely match while also beautifully embracing the vision is beyond complicated. This is far far more than "background music". This is Talent and Skill and Decades of practice. Thank you Netflix. Please do more of these and don't be afraid of showing the details. There is an audience who has the ability to understand and are hungry for content that is intellectually satisfying.
Martin is a genius. He writes cinematically and with a clarity that I've always loved - his score for North and South is one I still listen to regularly.
I listened to this track everyday. This music is alluring. I have always wondered how the composer struck the right chord with this masterpiece and how music composers in general are so brilliant to drive emotions. Are there more channels that describe how certain music was curated a certain way?
This was my favorite soundtrack of the new season and I'm so happy we get to hear the composer himself talk about it and what it means for the scene it was played on. Thank you so much for this Netflix, it means a lot
That pretty cool. Whenever I watch a movie or tv show I pay attention to the music as well. It kinda one way you can feel the characters. So, thank you for showing us.
I think the vocal Diana motif was incredibly haunting. It certainly gave you chills but you sorta fought 'em cause there was also such beauty in it. That string that falls down the cliff is SUPER eerie - brilliantly done tho, I picked it up throughout the season. I think I may have heard it in season 3 also? Mr. Phipps if you read this - I think your score was brilliant. Along with Peter Morgan's words, that cast and YOUR music - you absolutely took me out of reality and made me feel precisely what you and the other storytellers wanted. And that, sir, I thank you. 🙏
As a musician this is what makes a series great. Plays even have muic that adds to the color of what is about to happen and this was certainly the case.
this score just adds to the atmosphere of oppression - even the veil is like a lace cage and Charles bitter face but it’s all seen as if through a gauzy dream,- just the unsaid says so much in this series - I just love the space between the conversations, definitely my favourite series ever ..
Love this! Netflix: make more of these please. Well done production and kudos to the entire production staff who put this together! Thank you very much to the composer for really adding excellent value to this series!
The score for the show is breathtaking, loved the score for season 4. Martin Phipps is a genius. The score is always something i take away the most from a show and iv'e been listening to this score on spotify since November! I'm glad they uploaded this video.
Something I noticed is that, as the scene progresses, that solitary vocal which is supposed to represent Diana's loneliness and apprehension slowly fades. In its place, the chords meant to represent the feelings of the royal family and their devotion to duty come through. It's almost as if Diana's voice is being silenced, as if the constant preaching of duty above all has stifled her. No one cares about what she says. Not the queen, not her friends and especially not Charles.
One of the most acclaimed series ever. Yet, the unfair lack of interest of some people for the topic (especially in France for example, as sad as it is), makes The Crown THE most underrated series in existence right now. I mean this show, it's CINEMA-WORTHY. That's just how brilliant it is. The cast, the score, the cinematography, the scripts, the massive amount of History unfolding, the drama... It's absolute quality at every single level. This should be THE #1 most streamed show in the World, it should not be even close... Sadly, there's not enough monsters, CGI madness, Marvel crap, Disney agenda, you name it, for all these people not even realizing what it really is to be in this family's position, & in Her Majesty The Queen's position in particular. What a series this is!
This is amazing. I always thought that music has a control over feelings. Wether i'm happy or sad i can play the same music but it will sound differently
Thanks for doing this type of videos, is helping me to do a an analisy of the serie for one of my finals researchs of the career. Every day i'm more amazed of how great this production is done.
Wow, so we all somewhat knew that the OST was par excellence and conveyed the emotions reflective of the entire environment around the royal family but the intricate music details that personified that reflected could have been explained only by a genius. Thanks Mr. Phipps ! Looking forward to more of your masterpieces in future. But for now, can you also explain ‘voices’ next? In quite a few ways, it (along with ‘the royal highness’) really feels like the backbone of the season 4.
I really liked the scene of one Diana accepted to marry prince Charles and told her friends « the edge of seventeen » at the end of the seen the music turned dark its like you were telling us don’t except a happy ending, it won’t end well.
Please make more of this, Netflix! This is brilliant!
I say the same!
Simply Marvelous!
Yes! Imagine other films or shows with other topics that have the incredible type of cinematograpy like The Crown. How much I would love all of them.
The actor who plays Charles is phenomenal. The expression on his face, in his eyes during the closeup looks so real and genuine!
Josh O'Connor!!

Very true but Nothing can top The Crown's Original Soundtrack, it's one of the bestttt
