I used to despise Philip in season 1 and 2 because of how he treated Charles but in the end I realized he was right about Charles all along. He saw how childish and immature Charles was.
I hated Philip in the first two seasons but I disagree with the part about Charles. Charles was never born bad or cruel. He was raised this way. He was never treated right, with love or actual care. It was only duty and trying to forge him into something he wasn't. He was a theater kid, not a future ruler. As much as I blame him for what he did to Diana, let's not forget that his family is equally to blame, both in raising him that way and in what they in his marriage.
Princess Diana and Prince Phillip actually sent letters to one another after Princess Diana's divorce to his son. Even the opening letter was "my dearest papa" and he was also affectionate towards Princess Diana.
So far on this show we do have him being impressed with her (at the hunt) and then giving her a piece of his mind, though it sounds more of fatherly scolding that absolute dislike (this scene), so I would say there is still enough time for them to portray his true empathetic relationship with her

Everyone’s still poor Diana, when the reality is Diana was self absorbed and unhappy not because she was heartbroken over Charles…she naively believed she was going to live a fairytale princess story where everything went prefect and well…she was the star. I think why Kate adjusts so well is because she doesn’t seem to dwell on the attention. She, like Queen Elizabeth really treat the role of a Royal like a job. A duty. And when you realize your Royal status is more of a duty of toil and labor…well you aren’t suckered into thinking it’s gonna be a fairytale.

Difference between Philip and Diana is that the Queen was still invested in her marriage with Philip and wanted to make it work, whereas Charles did not care for Diana. Which is why Diana can’t adjust the way Philip eventually did.
The Queen had no choice but to stay married no matter what. She went through 'similar' experience when her husband was stress with the whole control lifestyle and had affairs, she had to play stone heart and give him an ultimatum..'be my husband or...and he chose to be "the Queen's husband" but it was the hardest choice he had to make. Anne is HARDLY "irrelevant". She always was and is still the hardest working "royal" with a full calendar of functions and duties, long after most people would have retired. Philip didn't understand his child and what his child needed. He saw what he thought he needed and snared it. People need to be able to make their own choices and be held accountable to those choices. Diana is quite fortunate they had moved beyond throwing broken things into the asylum.
You love who you love. And if you try to make someone do something they don't want to do, then it may very well push them in that direction you are trying to stop/avoid. I feel some sympathy for Charles..can you imagine being forced to marry someone you don't love? that's gotta be tough. I always liked Princess Diana even without the series got out, but after I started to watch it, Prince Philip became my second favorite member of the royal family since season 1 because of his character.
The queen is going through what any other widow goes through. The difference is that she is queen. Her heart will be smashed to pieces but is not allowed to show her grief except in private. For that I feel especially sad.
I've read Philip actually liked her- out spoken, expressed her own opinion- a lot like himself and he wanted her to stick it out because he felt she and Charles would modernize the monarchy, like he wanted to do at one time.
Honestly charles was an idiot. Here he had a woman who the world would stop everything to listen to, she had almost very similar ideas about the monarchy and she was very outspoken, and even supportive of many things liberal, but he ended up choosing a cow who can barely get the attention of her own neighborhood. He could have gotten over the affair like normal people, went to therapy supported his wife, and not be a jealous little beta male, and really worked through the marriage instead of abandoning her for high groove, and he really would have been adored by many people in the world today. And he would not be sitting here, like he is now, complaining about how he was the first one to talk about climate change and no one heard him and being a child about it, and being called a hypocrite for it now. The 2 boys were strongly encouraged to walk because Charles was scared the public would boo him or something like that, and having the boys there served as a shield (this is from the woman who did Harry's biography a while ago although she is now unhinged, so take it with a grain of salt)

Tobias Menzies was phenomenal as Philip. To get his voice altered vastly different from his own to match Philip’s was amazing and he got his mannerisms and body language spot on. Jonathan Pryce will be incredible too in Seasons 5-6.
He's not wrong, but probably wasn't hinting at her death. See, he grew up and lived in a time where divorce was very much a shameful thing. Royals especially were ostracized and bullied if they divorced. He didn't want her to go through that, but at the same time, he knew he couldn't force her to stay. He knew his son was a lost cause and Diana was no Princess Alexandra (Queen of King Edward VII, Elizabeth's great-grandfather, whom he cheated on throughout their marriage). All he could do was warn her as a father would.

As an american royal watcher, Prince Phillip has always been the most fascinating out of all the royals to me. And knowing that he was one of the few that was truly in Dianas corner makes me admire him more. A german born Greek Prince who became a model Prince Consort. Tobias Menzies really took Philip's character to another level. He's brilliant, in an understated way. I really loved his performance in 'Terror' as well. Hoping to see much more from him.

Pride and status? How do you people even exist? It is an obvious appeal to know that being part of the Royal Family means you have become part of a cultural and political entity, not just a run of the mill family from the suburbs. He is appealing to Diana to recognise that in this situation, the Queen or King at the time is the person who matters. The others wield no power, and are thus, irrelevant.
Rather an appeal to Diana to remind her of the fact that she is not a normal woman, she's a princess, and so a public servant and in particular a servant of the crown, impersonated by Elizabeth. They all have to be loyal to Elizabeth not because of her pride, as you say, but because she's the embodiment of the secular institution of monarchy on which they all depend, and without which they loose all their privileges. He's reminding her that the "essence of her duty", the reason why has what she has, is to serve the crown, not to go after her personal happiness. Diana failed to understand that as did Charles.
It wasn't a threat, it was a realistic viewpoint based on his experiences. What he was asserting was that the divorce would hang over Diana, damage her reputation, and potentially harm her children. In his beliefs, people who divorced or who broke away from the royal family were not regarded highly by the public (look at the Duke of Windsor), and indeed Diana WOULD be hounded by the press (not talking about the event in Paris). However Philip failed to realize that attitudes towards divorce and royal family were much different than when he was growing up. Although he's still not TOTALLY wrong: look how the British press treats Megan Markle.
Yeah but we all know what and who killed Diana, just because we don't have the power or evidence to prove it does not mean it didn't happen. I mean this is a family that works very closely with their secret agencies and international governments, and not to mention they also have known to use power to get people out of jail time because they were dating a member of the family. Phillip liked Diana from the moment he met her. He saw something inside of her that he didn’t see in anyone in his family, not even in the Queen. It’s like Phillip knows a Queen or King is someone the people choose, not someone who is elected or inherited but the sovereign we choose to lead us. That’s why there were revolutions in every country when the monarch neglected their countries affairs. Being King or Queen is a privilege because it puts you in a position to be extremely loved or extremely hated. Choose to be Loved.
I think it came from his own upbringing. He saw how quick it was to displace a king or a monarch and he saw the effects his mom had on the people of greece and england later than no one else in the family could have. Its tragic that the queen has more say in the relationships in family than him, he seems to be more level headed at times.
I think we give Phillip too much credit for simply being what a man who was given a lot more liberty to love, time to mature and see errs of his ways, and a woman he could look up to even when he felt neutered under her power, was capable to achieve.

It is a matter of record that Philip was always respectful and caring towards Diana... it's such a twisted farce that so many common people blame him for 'having her killed'
But his main duty was to The Crown and he'd do everything to preserve it. Diana was seen as a threat for whatever reason (something she new, the baby she carried from another man or whatever else) and he'd do anything to remove her out of the way no matter how much he loved her. You never know what goes on in the mind of people.
Oh God this scene makes me breakdown in tears because when Phillip describes the internal struggle of not feeling wanted or loved, you have to look at yourself from the outside and realize there’s more to life than one’s own happiness

I think what separated them was that Phillip could never do what Diana did. He couldn't break away for the same reasons he tried to discourage Diana to in this scene. He long ago accepted his place in the family no matter how miserable a life that meant living, basically sold out because he thought there was no alternative. Diana on the otherhand was not willing to give up so easily and I think that's why they kept in touch after she divorced Charles, he admired her bravery to do what he couldn't.
He also had a long-lasting marriage to a woman he loved and four children and several grandchildren to think of. Leaving would hurt them all to no end, especially given their public profile and that him leaving would force Elizabeth to relinquish her crown as a divorcee, and also mean he had to give the ones he loved up. They also probably made it worth it.
I love how the actor invokes Prince Phillips mannerisms and body stance and the rustic of his voice to bring the character to life like it was Prince Phillips himself.
I kinda like their relationship. They are both outsiders and Phillip empathised with Diana so much. I think he is the only one cared for her. Btw, the cast is amazing!! Kudos 🙌🏽✨

For me this wasn't just the best scene of the season, but I may have to say of the entire series to date. Father and Daughter in-law, finally seeing each others true selves for the first time. Diana slowly coming to the realisation that she deserves more out of life then what shes been dealt. And if her husband let alone his family can't give her the love she deserves then she'll find it on her own, naturally. Philip realising that Diana can't be baited as the young naive girl anymore with false securities and how her priorities aren't that of the "standard" Royal protocol thus, questions her judgement (or lack there of, in his eyes). Brilliantly written and acted from start to finish. Emma and Tobias truly embraced their characters. It honestly did feel as though I was watching Prince Philip and Princess Diana have this discussion.
What I absolutely love about the writing in this show is that every character is given the care and attention they all rightfully deserve. It all happened in reality, and people have made a fuss about it all, people SYMPATHIZED with Diana, Phillip, Margaret, etc. But all the drama, all the pain and all the hardship these people went through does not matter at all compared to the Queen. Ever since the first episode, King George said that “she is the essence of your duty”, in which Phillip reiterates to Diana. Every season ends with everyone putting aside their own personal hardships to serve Elizabeth, who in turn, probably has the hardest job on Earth. “To be divine, yet mortal.”
Prince Philip was ALL about duty... to his Queen, his wife, his family, his country, his fellow servicemen, his charities. He finally decided to retire at 96 but carried on till 97, performing one last ceremony with his Royal Marines. I hope I have that kind of strength and devotion to others at that age. Respect.
I'm glad I'm not born in a family that is any sort of public figure... Be Businesses tycoons, royals or celebrities... I can barely handle life just as it is and having the constant attention of people on you devoid of affection and care seems like the worst prison to live in
HRH Prince Philip seems to come out of this as a much kinder and more thoughtful individual and much more paternal to Diana than he was given credit for.
This was the best advice anyone could have given Diana. But she was too young, proud and naive to understand or even to appreciate it. So sad. RIP Phillip and Diana. 🕊

I think in this scene, Philli tried to get Diana to understand the position she was truly in. He didn't want things to go bad for her, he tried to warn her. He was born a Prince but lost his birthright. But he always knew that when he married Elizabeth, as Queen Mary said in season 1 " The Crown must ALWAYS win"
It's nice to see how Phillip and Diana were close. Given their positions, both of them weren't really welcome in the Royal family. Phillip understood this and showed her the comfort in all of this.
I really think the show did a great job at illustrating the RF’s point of view on the Diana/Charles situation with both conversations between Charles and Elizabeth and Diana and Phillip. No one is 100% the victim or villain.
One of my favorite scenes in the show! The writing in this is so good! The callback to season 1 is a nice touch! 3:44 Also did you anyone notice how Diana jumped a bit when Philip said “come” Really showed how tense she was in the scene. Well done!
I love how both of them were on the same page in this scene. This actually seemed similar to the scene when they went for hunting together. And I think this was the kindest Philip was towards her in this season. I hope we get to see more of this side of him in future episodes.
I enjoyed that -hunting for the wounded deer-scene. Diana seemed so unassuming and natural and comfortable around Phillip in that scene. Very much like a relaxed youngster unaware of his importance. Don’t know if I described that well.
I would say in modern times it is not. The modern apolitically monarchy is simply a institution that ensures the British social hierarchy and establishment remains enact. All the actually politics and governing that made past personal scarifies by people born into ruling families has long gone. With no great power comes no great responsibility, and that results in no real duty in my book.
Imagine the royal family watching this series together and Prince Philip going " I think it's fantastic"

Tobias Menzies was phenomenal as Philip. To get his voice altered vastly different from his own to match Philip’s was amazing and he got his mannerisms and body language spot on. Jonathan Pryce will be incredible too in Seasons 5-6.

Royals especially were ostracized and bullied if they divorced. He didn't want her to go through that, but at the same time, he knew he couldn't force her to stay. He knew his son was a lost cause and Diana was no Princess Alexandra (Queen of King Edward VII, Elizabeth's great-grandfather, whom he cheated on throughout their marriage). I disagree, It's very emotional in many ways, but mostly because he's saying the exact words he's felt as the prince.
So we’ll said! She should be miserable for a woman who never showed her any empathy or compassion. The allegiance to the queen is something I’ll ever understand.
Pride and status? How do you people even exist? It is an obvious appeal to know that being part of the Royal Family means you have become part of a cultural and political entity, not just a run of the mill family from the suburbs. He is appealing to Diana to recognise that in this situation, the Queen or King at the time is the person who matters. The others wield no power, and are thus, irrelevant.
Rather an appeal to Diana to remind her of the fact that she is not a normal woman, she's a princess, and so a public servant and in particular a servant of the crown, impersonated by Elizabeth. They all have to be loyal to Elizabeth not because of her pride, as you say, but because she's the embodiment of the secular institution of monarchy on which they all depend, and without which they loose all their privileges. He's reminding her that the "essence of her duty", the reason why has what she has, is to serve the crown, not to go after her personal happiness. Diana failed to understand that as did Charles.
It wasn't a threat, it was a realistic viewpoint based on his experiences.
What he was asserting was that the divorce would hang over Diana, damage her reputation, and potentially harm her children. In his beliefs, people who divorced or who broke away from the royal family were not regarded highly by the public (look at the Duke of Windsor), and indeed Diana WOULD be hounded by the press (not talking about the event in Paris). However Philip failed to realize that attitudes towards divorce and royal family were much different than when he was growing up.

It’s easy to forget, but Philip had seen first hand just how easily a monarchy falls when the people turn against it.

Phillip liked Diana from the moment he met her. He saw something inside of her that he didn’t see in anyone in his family, not even in the Queen. It’s like Phillip knows a Queen or King is someone the people choose, not someone who is elected or inherited but the sovereign we choose to lead us. That’s why there were revolutions in every country when the monarch neglected their countries affairs. I think it came from his own upbringing. He saw how quick it was to displace a king or a monarch and he saw the effects his mom had on the people of greece and england later than no one else in the family could have. I think what separated them was that Phillip could never do what Diana did. He couldn't break away for the same reasons he tried to discourage Diana to in this scene. He long ago accepted his place in the family no matter how miserable a life that meant living, basically sold out because he thought there was no alternative. Diana on the otherhand was not willing to give up so easily and I think that's why they kept in touch after she divorced Charles, he admired her bravery to do what he couldn't.
But the Queen is not an a-hole like Charles.

He also had a long-lasting marriage to a woman he loved and four children and several grandchildren to think of. Your problem if I may say, is you seem to be confused about WHO that person is" Phillip telling Diana this is one of my favorites moments because, not only it shows his devotion and loyalty towards Elizabeth but also shows that (aside from having a horrible husband) Diana looked like she wanted to be the same or even more important than the queen.. she remind me a bit of Margaret when she was younger.
Phillip also looked like he was telling her to wait and let Charles make the move on the divorce.. maybe then it would've been different then.. who knows

Great scene. Rest In Peace Prince Phillip and of course Princess Diana. Both people in this scene have now passed on. Phillip most definitely did his duty and very honourably served his wife and country. A great and fulfilling 99-100 years. Let’s make this next century great in his honour. ❤️🙏
For me this wasn't just the best scene of the season, but I may have to say of the entire series to date. Father and Daughter in-law, finally seeing each others true selves for the first time. Diana slowly coming to the realisation that she deserves more out of life then what shes been dealt. And if her husband let alone his family can't give her the love she deserves then she'll find it on her own, naturally. Philip realising that Diana can't be baited as the young naive girl anymore with false securities and how her priorities aren't that of the "standard" Royal protocol thus, questions her judgement (or lack there of, in his eyes).
Brilliantly written and acted from start to finish. Emma and Tobias truly embraced their characters. It honestly did feel as though I was watching Prince Philip and Princess Diana have this discussion.

What I absolutely love about the writing in this show is that every character is given the care and attention they all rightfully deserve. It all happened in reality, and people have made a fuss about it all, people SYMPATHIZED with Diana, Phillip, Margaret, etc.
But all the drama, all the pain and all the hardship these people went through does not matter at all compared to the Queen. Ever since the first episode, King George said that “she is the essence of your duty”, in which Phillip reiterates to Diana. Every season ends with everyone putting aside their own personal hardships to serve Elizabeth, who in turn, probably has the hardest job on Earth.

Prince Philip was ALL about duty... to his Queen, his wife, his family, his country, his fellow servicemen, his charities.
He finally decided to retire at 96 but carried on till 97, performing one last ceremony with his Royal Marines.
I hope I have that kind of strength and devotion to others at that age.

Philip and Diana were incredibly close, even after the divorce. She still referred to him as her “darling papa”.
Philip : 'Don't leave the family. It won't end well for you'. Probably the most chilling line of this clip.
HRH Prince Philip seems to come out of this as a much kinder and more thoughtful individual and much more paternal to Diana than he was given credit for.

@@Willowy13 this Royal Family and the Monarchy is not about the individual. It is about the office. And deciding to becoming apart of that institution and think one can change it was foolhardy. It stood and seemingly will continue to stand the test of time.

This was such an emotional scene. I actually cried at this scene.
I think in this scene, Philli tried to get Diana to understand the position she was truly in. He didn't want things to go bad for her, he tried to warn her. He was born a Prince but lost his birthright. But he always knew that when he married Elizabeth, as Queen Mary said in season 1 " The Crown must ALWAYS win"

It's nice to see how Phillip and Diana were close. Given their positions, both of them weren't really welcome in the Royal family. Phillip understood this and showed her the comfort in all of this.

I really think the show did a great job at illustrating the RF’s point of view on the Diana/Charles situation with both conversations between Charles and Elizabeth and Diana and Phillip. No one is 100% the victim or villain.
One of my favorite scenes in the show! The writing in this is so good! The callback to season 1 is a nice touch!

I love how both of them were on the same page in this scene. This actually seemed similar to the scene when they went for hunting together. And I think this was the kindest Philip was towards her in this season. I hope we get to see more of this side of him in future episodes.
I enjoyed that -hunting for the wounded deer-scene. Diana seemed so unassuming and natural and comfortable around Phillip in that scene. Very much like a relaxed youngster unaware of his importance. Don’t know if I described that well.

I would say in modern times it is not. The modern apolitically monarchy is simply a institution that ensures the British social hierarchy and establishment remains enact. All the actually politics and governing that made past personal scarifies by people born into ruling families has long gone. With no great power comes no great responsibility, and that results in no real duty in my book.
