    Rich Kotite was one of my favorite football coaches/players for what he had to go through as a Jets coach. Keep in mind this is a man who made it to the NFL as a player coming from a division III school which was unheard of at the time. Was a champion heavyweight boxer in his time as well. He's accomplished more than what most people will do in their lives yet is only remembered for the worst two years of his life.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 5 років тому +2

      dantheman92317 the reality is he didn’t deserve the job and basically got it because he happened to be from Brooklyn. He should have turned it down and taken a coordinator role, and he wouldn’t have been run out of football. He was totally in over his head as a head coach, and it showed in Philly where he was run out of town after making comments like “8-8 is great” and “I didn’t know whether we should go for 2 because my sheet was smudged by the rain”. The Jets were idiotic for firing Pete carrol after 1 season especially since the team wasn’t trending in the right direction anyway. Kotite was a terrible hire but he also didn’t have much of a chance to be fair because the team was regressing every year even before him. The amazing thing is that in today’s nfl every single training camp is easier than the supposedly very easy “camp Kotite” thanks to rules and regulations. In today’s nfl, every single coach has become rich kotite

I mean I'm sure you wouldn't like to be judged forever by some of your worst days. I mean I've had them. Anyway he might have said the 8-8 quote as a response to being hurt by injuries in the 1993 season yet still winning the last 3 games. I'd have to think he deserves some credit as well for discovering #80 Chrebet undrafted.

    Kotite had a terrible run with the Jets, no question about it, it was a disaster. But I think his Eagles run gets overlooked. His first year ('91) Cunningham was injured in week 1 and Kotite managed to coach that team to a 10-win season (they missed the playoffs due to the NFC being so stacked, which makes the 10-6 record look even better). In '92 they improved to 11-5 and won a playoff game (something Buddy Ryan couldn't do) on the road against the Saints who were legit super bowl contenders that year. In '93 the team was absolutely DECIMATED with injuries, including Cunningham getting hurt again, so going 8-8 wasn't too shabby, all things considered. In '94 he lost control of the team halfway through the season and the rest is history, but that first half of his head coaching career is something he NEVER gets credit for. And for the record, I'm an unbiased Raiders fan who has no horse in this race whatsoever, I just objectively look at Kotite and think he got a bad rap considering the ONLY thing people remember are those horrible years with the Jets.

    • @TL2354
      @TL2354 5 років тому

      The Saints were legit Super Bowl contenders in 1992? At that point they had never won a playoff game in their history!!! How can a team that’s never won a playoff game be a legit SB contender?

    • @godeatgod666
      @godeatgod666 5 років тому

      @@TL2354 Yeah they had a lot of bad teams in their past, but the '92 Saints were a great team. All four of their starting linebackers made the pro bowl, and they gave up less points than any other team of the decade, their defense was sick. They finished 12-4 (their only losses all year were to the 49ers (twice), Bills and Eagles (all teams that made it to atleast the divisional round). The problem was the NFC was so stacked.

    • @VanillaLimeCoke
      @VanillaLimeCoke 5 років тому

      Kenevil you make a strong point. 5/6 times From 1990-1995 the Super Bowl would be won by an NFC East team. 1994 was the only year it wasn’t.....won by the 49ers.

      Kenevil The Saints didn’t have a bye that year, they weren’t “Legit”

    • @godeatgod666
      @godeatgod666 4 роки тому

      @@TL2354 The only reason they didn't have a bye was because the 14-2 49ers were in their division. Saints still had the 3rd best record in the entire NFL. If they were in the weaker AFC, they would have had homefield advantage and a strong shot at reaching the Super Bowl. Hell, if the Saints were even in the NFC Central, they may have challenged Dallas for the #2 seed. Now of course, the Saints went and blew a 13-point lead in the 4th quarter when the playoffs rolled around. But they were still one of the better teams in the league that year, they were byfar the best team in the Mora era. Which brings me back to my original point. That was a big playoff win for the Eagles, and Kotite doesn't get any credit for that.

    What I've never understood is the decision making in this organization. How the heck do you hire someone who went 0-7 in his last few games with Philly and think you're getting a rock solid coach? And then fast forward many years later to the hiring of Gase. How the heck do you hire someone who was fired for horrible results in his last two years at Miami and think that somehow that was going to be an improvement? Pete Carroll went on to have a hall of fame career in the NFL with San Fran, in the NCAA Div 1 college ranks, and then again in the NFL with Seattle. Kotite today is remembered as having been one of the worst coaches not only in Jets history but in NFL history. It's mind boggling.

      Kotite was snakebitten with the Eagles. Bruce Paup broke Randall Cunningham's knee in 1991 and Philly's defense was #1 in the NFL that year. He also lost Cunningham in the 1993 game against the Jets. Then in 1994, Philly was 7-2 when middle linebacker Bryon Evans was lost for the year and they didn't win another game. That was Kotite's death kneel right there.

      OliveOyl12590 that’s because Kotite never had his team practice so they were never prepared if even the slightest thing went wrong.
