  • www.DeborahWirsu.com has relocated to www.threadsketchinginaction.com. Week 10 of Thread sketching in Action demonstrates one way to enhance a simple flower with free motion stitch. This series, Thread Sketching in Action offers 52 weeks of thread sketching, thread painting and free motion designs, as they are created on a domestic sewing machine. The demonstrations form an ongoing collection of ideas for stand-alone thread-sketched pictures and ideas for quilting larger works. wow ! Beautiful ! You make it look so easy but I guess there are many hours of practice in the past.

Hi Helen - Yes, practice is always the key, but this is quite achievable if you give it a go! Often things are not as difficult as they appear.

A great tutorial . Do you use a hoop or are you just free hand?

Hi Sylvia - I don't use a hoop in this piece - I only use hoops when absolutely necessary.

I have a question was this a quit square with batting and backing .? When you are doing a "painting " do you hoop it or use iron facing I want to learn very basics How to begin what do you need ?

Trayne1837 Hi and thanks for your question. Yes, this flower was quilted with batting and backing. The flower design was fused onto the top. No other stabiliser was used for this one as there is not a lot of stitching to pull the fabric out of shape. I rarely use hoops, but sometimes there is a need with some fabrics.
