    Any porting done to intake/transfer ports is a compromise. As the ports are increased in size, the volume of the crankcase increases, making for lower 'compression' in the crankcase. Increases in the crankcase volumne hurts in two ways, less drawing vacuum on the pistons upstroke and less crankcase compression on the downstroke. Of course larger transfer ports can flow more but as the transfers get larger the pressure driving the fuel/air charge diminishes so it is a compromise. We have actually filled a crankcase with epoxy then rotated a dummy piston and rod through it to create the smallest crankcase volumne possible. After it hardens we would sand the channel the rod made to get a small bit of clearance. We also built 'stuffers' that were fit into the bottom of the crankcase that would take up volumne into the underside of the piston on the pistons downstroke. By using a one way valve installed in the crankcase you can monitor only the positive crankcase pressure with a pressure gauge. Any porting that is done inside the crankcase will lower the pressure used to drive the fuel/air charge. This is certainly an instance where bigger isn't always better.

    haha when you were talking about the 372 plastic throttle cable holder I was saying out loud "fabricate it out of metal" and those sneaky Chinese at Farmer-Tech already did it. haha I feel better about buying/supporting their business, those bar's and chains I bought all preform great at a 1/3 of the cost. Nice job on the piston comparison and the cylinder shots! I second the motion of the idea of Cullen porting, great idea! Love keeping it real with Harv & Cullen! Keep it up guys! Gotta be dirt bike riding time by now up there in the N.E. USA haha

    Heck yea Harvey!! Great video! That piston looks good. Love how you explain all this stuff. Great idea havin Cullen do a port job to teach us! Then run it and show what it does. Better even is run a saw stock before he does the porting. Time the cuts and time after on the same log. Lookin foreward to that for sure!! A year.. wow! Congrats on 12K!     Love your channel I raced 2 stroke go karts 3 decade ago I wish I had this knowledge you give when I was racing......wa yr ago I bought a brand new ms 271 then a 311 then a john deere 80 ev no after a yr I hv a 288xp restored a 046 a 066 and two ms 660. It's been an addictive hobbies I'm gonna build more huskys I want a 3120 and a still 090 clone it's been addictive I'm learning an buying more tools thank you u teach great I really get what you teach

    rewatching your video's - sure appreciate the info you're sharing!! learning the hard way.. lol, you said something like "just change the seals" i didn't - wanted to see if it would run - bought it at auction, yup it ran alright...briefly, once opened it up i learned - reseal it 1st! "make sure those edges are nicely rounded" lol, almost... using burrs in a drill (it's what i have) - careful, it's easy to go too far & quick and that coating can have sharp spots!! 1st 61-72 ran good in the end, was too cold to really get to work it much over Xmas. Snagged Hyway right from Taiwan for another 61 & a 266, everything still in the boxes, approaching things a little more cautiously this time around!! ha ha Please keep up the good work!!

    iRemember that vid. I've only ported once (alot of magazines) just smoothing n edging. Then it went to the port guy to have the valves cut. He told me iDid a really good job on the flow bench n was amazed it was my first time. N only time. Maybe it's time again lol. Saw is gonna zing 👍🏽

    Hi mate, I’ve been thing some on this, since you are experimenting a bit on this saw. And given that you chamfer the piston to match the transfers properly. Have you thought of using a stroker crank and shorter rod? This would allow you to have the piston match the transfers better and get more air into the cylinder giving you more horsepower.
    Food for thought anyway.

    Hogan’s saw is going to be a monster, it’s the product of working through problems to better the design great job, I think Cullen porting is a great idea!! He needs to do it too learn and take your knowledge to the next generation!

    i used to hate the aftermarket,well alot of it is still hit or miss lol,but ive yet to get a bad meteor or hyway part..and recently ive noticed some of the farmertec stuff looks alot better than it did say 2 years ago...still like to use oem when i can afford too...

    How does the bounce back work on the old homelites like the xl's. Some of the xl12's and others u could get that little stack for the muffler that acts like a straight pipe does on a car, let alone the actual mufflers that really don't have anything other than the cover or cover and spark arrestor?

    Are you using flow bench ? You should be able to tell if every port exaust and carb is balance and what need to be modify to get more cfm moving ?

    What if there was and is there some kind of 2stroke like engine that pops off in combustion chamber and sparks off on the down stroke too a double popper if even at all possible...
    Crank probably wouldn't like that but its just about exposed to exhaust gas anyway..but direction and air..I know, would be neat though kool idea I think, a double popper 2stroke....as in like a spark plug in the crank and it's own dual mixed double carb brainchild lol

    Just a little off topic but please give me an answer on this. I really need an experts answer. I own an old 51 series husky since it was new and I run a 16 inch bar on it. The saw has less than 200 hours on it and has compression like it was brand new. How long a bar can be run on this saw. I get alot of recommendations from people but I have never ask anyone that I felt that they were knowledgeable enough for me to trust so please if you could get back to me on this.     The *66 jugs have the transfers you describe IE on the side of cyilnder only (and open/closed by piston) not outer loops, but as much as I see guys aiming these uppers "straight & backwards to intake" I can't understand how that's superior to aiming them *upwards*, I mean won't the exhaust-escape be a static/consistent volume (based on explosion power, and total displacement), no? If that's so, I find it so hard to imagine why *up* isn't better than *across*, I mean if the transfer charge is forced to the upper/rear of cylinder wouldn't it still displace the exhaust-gas volume with identical displacement because it *has to*? But the fact of it being 'above' the exhaust charge, burnt by the plug and propagating downward, it's so hard imagining that the best path isn't "rear & upwards" so it can go up the intake wall, hit chamber, and begin "pushing down", thus keeping far higher a % of expelled volume *exhaust*, not *charge*?
    Also I'm glad you mention Re why this part of 2-strokes, and that moment on the compression stroke when the exhasust port sucks-in from the muff, so many guys - tinman included - still just take a 1/2" drill bit to the back half of a muffler, right by the exhasust-flange, fully negating that basic function of 2-strokes IE the suck-back of part-charge/part-exhaust during mid compression-stroke!

    I haven't had a Meteor yet but for my 660's have: (3) F.Tec, a popup Saw Salvage, and a pop-up Hyway. The latter had the widest skirts of all, with a subtly wider exhaust-side skirting which I liked (no wings, straight-skirted) Saw Salvage's skirts were nearly as thick, and same width on intake&exhaust skirts. F.Tec's seem good but are markedly rougher casting than the other two (Saw Salvage had the nicest casting, basically OEM Stihl quality casting) You speak of breaking pistons....I've never put real time on any of my "worked pistons", what is/are the most common ways of breaking/cracking a piston, like which spots & how? Will be honest, I've smoothed & "opened the windows" on one of mine that I'm a tad worried of its strength, but then all I think is "it's the top of the piston that needs to be strong, the rest is just supporting that" and don't stress it...would be curious if you've gone too-far and just shatter pistons quickly, or if you're erring towards "leave more for strength" just as a conservative move? Honestly it crossed my mind "Just how much lighter & smoother could I make this before it's a 50/50 whether it'll be strong enough to be used?" lol!!

    Your awesome . I just picked up a Stihl 056av it seems good some issues like I don’t think it was ever cleaned. Filter is bad and it’s easy to flood. The piston has no crosshatching however it’s smooth and no visible scoring. .i need to do a compression test to see but it seems good almost just like my ms660 I’ll tell you what have a look on my instagram see what you think.@ blainstenberg7791

      I have both a Husqvarna 340 and 350. Made in 04' and 05' strong running saws. Both are stock and run the .325 pinch chain. I love the feel of them and they are smooth cutters. Nice torque, they pull great. They have the exposed style clutch with the sprocket behind it. It takes getting use to swapping out chains, which isn't a big deal. You can access the chain tensioner through the clutch cover. The tensioner is in the powerhead itself. I also have a primer bulb and decomp valve on mine. I'm not a professiona mechanic or production faller like Harvey but Its a great firewood saw.

      Richard Sullivan my 350 is about the same year but doesn’t have a primer bulb and has an exposed clutch like yours I haven’t got cutting with it yet cause I have just put a new barrel and piston on it but I’m super excited to use it. Has your muffler ever rattled loose cause I have read that they will sometimes do that.

      Jimmy the Puffin, no I never had issues with the muffler rattling loose. Never heard any rattling and I clean my saws religiously so I would like to think if there were a slight or even cosmetic issue I would see it. Just keep in mind to deactivate the chain break before taking off the clutch cover or else you'll have to reset the mechanism on the clutch cover itself. I switched over from Stihl to Husqvarna a couple of years back. I had a MS 170 and 251C. Both were great saws and I don't have anything bad to say about Stihl. I just fell in love with Husqvarna. I bought the 340 and that was it, shortly after i purchased the 350, both on ebay.

      Richard Sullivan when I bought my saw I had to reset the clutch, and that’s good that the muffler hasn’t rattled loose on your saw. I also love huskies but I’ve never run a stihl.

    Anybody have any content knowledge of fluid dynamics? Seems like larger volumes (transfer opening) but the same volume of air just means lower pressure. If you imagine putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose, the amount of water doesn't change, just how fast it has to move to get the same amount through. I know air is different because it is compressible, but just wondering if larger doesn't always mean better....

      Volume of air goes up because there's less pressure drop due to less restriction.

      @@danl6634 Sure. But the volume of air is limited by how long the intake is open and the properties of air, which, in addition to being compressible, is also "stretchable." I get opening the intake, but opening the transfers, I wonder if that just slows the air going into the cylinder. Now, maybe that's good--less fresh gas going out the exhaust. But I can imagine there is a limit, where the air slows down to the point that it isn't purging the exhaust fully enough.

      @@elijahmerrill1132 no argument that messing with just the transfer ports and nothing else would cause unusual symptoms. But they said this was the last thing to be done after improving flow in the intake (carb) and exhaust. So the additional air was already available compared to stock setup, it just needed to be flow more easily to take advantage.
