This recording is to the best of my knowledge only available on an LP long out of print. While I have carefully removed clicks, pops, static and surface noise wherever possible, I have NOT used any radical equalization adjustments to do so.
Both of these Cantatas are among my favorite Bach vocal works & #106 was apparently composed when Johann Sebastian was around 20 & in Eisenach so I’ve heard. #106 is among Bach’s most unusual cantatas in the manner of which it is constructed & scored. It is pretty much through-composed in that the sections flow from one to another with scarcely any breaks in between. A nice touch is the use of recorders which I never have found to figure prominently in Bach’s other cantatas. Cantata #78 is in separated sections like most of Bach’s other cantatas & contains one of his greatest recit/arioso & arias for bass with a wonderful opening: DIE WUNDEN, NAGEL,KRON, UND GRAB with an amazing octave & tritone drop on the the text UND GRAB! Sheer genius. All soloists are fine especially the late superb Franz Crass.
Thank you very much for uploading this wonderful vintage recording!
This is my favourite Bach cantata and originally released in stereo as a album vinyl in 1965 on the EMI/HMV label and the vinyl catalogue number for that is CSD 3518,and also available in mono.
