In my late teens (70 years ago) I purchased an LP of this cantata and was hooked on Bach, a fascination that never ceased. This is truly a magnificient recording: it is as Bach would have performed it: simple, joyous yet respectful.
This is a MASTERPIECE ON ALL LEVELS. The music itself of course is a masterpiece of concentration on text and musical precision. But then this performance, which in the blackest of times in the last 80 years I have listened to for comfort and succor so often, goes so beyond anything anyone could reasonably expect on UA-cam! This performance of Wachet Auf is, for me, the apotheosis of anything that UA-cam and social media can do for us. No English "top group' or French ensemble can rival this single performance of this exquisite and curt Bach cantata. There are multiple intimate camera angles; there are several solists and each renders the singing (not the 'performance' which I am sure Bach would have suspected) in a convincing and revelatory way. At every moment you feel you are in the church, over and among the spectators, we are close to the singers. One never feels that, 'up there' somewhere, there is a proscenium arch. And so WE ARE THE MUSIC ITSELF, WITH THE SINGERS AND THE COMPOSER'S INTENT. -- Of this performance, then: there is no more personal, introspective, and intimate rendition of any piece of music by Bach (I believe) right now on planet earth. This is simply a masterpiece of execution, a masterpiece of intelligent conducting, a masterpiece of intuiive and studied understanding, and finally a masterpiece of being human and seeking divinity and redemption (I speak as a Buddhist). Quite simply: there is nothing like this among millions of other UA-cam videos. I sent this to a friend in New York City tonight. He said he would breal into tears had he been there in person. -- Your Honors: we rest our case. Thank you to the Bach Society and to Jos van Veldhoven who called this miracle into the material world and preserved it for us. Please continue to lead us forward. Never have we had more need of you. We need you, now. Please please lead us forward

Each time I hear "Zion hört", I am amazed by how Bach fits the chorale theme into his accompaniment. Simply genius. Thanks to the Netherlands Bach Society for posting this wonderful performance.
Recently discovered the Netherlands Bach Society on UA-cam during the Covid-19 lockdown. My wife and I have been swept away by the beauty of the music and the outstanding performance...on period instruments as well. When things improve we plan a visit to Holland to see the Society perform live. Thank you for the outstanding music made available to the world for free in a world that knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.
Good work nice voice..perfect... better than this is not possible !!! The voice from Maria...very very nice !!! I love this voice...so clear well done Maria !!!
The opening chorus has such a wonderful pulse, a gentle swing in a slow three, made more elegant with dotted rhythms and counterpoint, suspensions, and these wonderful divided choral interpolations. It has such an inexorable flow, yet it's never hurried; I am made to sit quietly, to let go of all the bustling in my life, and to recalibrate with Bach and with God. No other composer quite accomplishes this.
Absolutely agree, Iggy! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. I always miss living in Germany especially at this time of year because of the Christmas markets and the many opportunities to hear classical music live. I lived in Munich for 7 years and Advent there was a whole month of festive and beautiful moments. Thank you for the beautiful music and reminder the ability to create beautiful moments wherever I am
This is incredible - like Angels on earth - I feel the Love, Faith and Hope in every note....Echoing St Augustine "They who sing pray twice" You sing the wonders the Lord has wrought in our salvation history. With lyre and harp, strings and reeds, and voices sent from heaven you truly praise the transcendent greatness of God. PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL!
This work and this interpretation are beyond sublime. A genius without parallel in musical creation, Bach puts true Beauty in a score and extraordinary musicians give it the life that emanates from musical symbols as they leap into instruments and voices. The quality of the recording is magnificent, allowing every detail, every detail to be absorbed. One feels in the musicians a natural humility of who knows that they are only part of the Music, embodying the work and not becoming conceited with the applauses. We are privileged to have been offered such greatness! Thank you.

Excellent - and most beautiful. As Jos van Veldhoven points out in his comments, the two duets are 'love duets'. The first one is yearning, the second, joyful. They are very difficult to do well, in my experience, but here Maria Keohane and Matthew Brook manage it marvellously. Congratulations!

Amen! BWV 140 was my introduction to the cantatas of JS Bach, maybe 70 years ago. Over a lifetime of listening to this work, I have never heard a more inspired performance. Not to mention, a beautiful audio and video recording.
They used the original Baroque instruments
As have I my friend. And I am in absolute awe!!!
Here in Brazil, making my baby sleep listening this music of haven! Love Bach.
Yeah! Really boring music.
It´s amazing what Bach can make with a simple and beauty choral melody. God's Voice keeps calling the world to awake
sadly enough 80% of the world is asleep and dont take heed to Gods call
yes its true! he is the grandmaster of church music!
@@michielvdvlies3315 It's sad to see some people don't realize Christianity is just one of many human believes, no more, no less. It also doesn't necessarily make good people. NO.
Bible is so outdated that it totally conflicts human history and natural science.
But music is much more universal because it deals with human emotions. So I can listen to Bach.
Bible never convinces me, but Bach does.
@@ttwiligh7 the bible convinced me and Bach. Bible isn't outdated more and more come to know Yeshua even atheist who are willing to do research. Check the UA-cam channel coldcasechristianity for example.
@@michielvdvlies3315 Thanks for the reply. I apologize for bringing this up. This wasn't a good place for this kind of argument. I'll go back to enjoy music again. Have a good one.
Finally, finally the courage to take that solemn tempo in the entrance choir! Most often conductors take it much too quick. Thank you.
In my late teens (70 years ago) I purchased an LP of this cantata and was hooked on Bach, a fascination that never ceased. This is truly a magnificient recording: it is as Bach would have performed it: simple, joyous yet respectful.
What a wonderful comment, thank you
You have no idea about how Bach would have wanted this to sound. Dont be so disrespectful to speak for BACH.
...diese Musik geht in die Tiefe - eigentlich findet sich hier das höchste Lob nicht in Worten - sondern in Tränen
As my family and I mourn a dearly loved friend’s passing, Bach’s music lifts my spirits, pointing us all to our Lord’s true comfort and peace.
Beautifully written. 💛💫

As an Australian stuck in the Uk lockdown waiting to get back to the Netherlands the NBS is a sanctuary that provides great relief from the uncertainty and emotional turmoil of this pandemic. Many thanks!
Andrew Stewart Agreed, such a wonderful distraction ( as an Australian )
Hope you aren’t stuck again!

I’m not religious but I can’t help but agree!!

Der Glanz diesen Zeichens menschlicher Schöpferkraft wird in jedem Moment der Jetztzeit deutlich und stellt jeden Glanz des Goldes und aller materiellen Fixiertest in den Schatten. I am from Brazil and only today I discovered this channel because my brother shared a video with me. It's been two hours that I am, emotional, static and thanking God for Bach's work. How to define the indefinable? Thank you Bach society. What an incredible job. I am a photographer and would like to congratulate the film crew. It's fantastic. Thank you. Long live to the channel.

Each time I hear "Zion hört", I am amazed by how Bach fits the chorale theme into his accompaniment. Simply genius. Thanks to the Netherlands Bach Society for posting this wonderful performance.
0:24 i love this scene, when the clarinet plays the wonderful melody and how he and Maria Keohane look at each other, it shows the magic of the music
This glorious music and channel are together one of the greatest gifts ever bestowed upon humanity! I could listen to Bach for all eternity.
You will listen him in etrnity, as he always wrote his music for God !
Beautifully put! He wrote his music for God Almighty!
Bach’s last words always stick with me.
“Do not cry for me, for I go where music is born”.
I’m certain we will -it must be played on repeat in heaven. But this comes mighty close to the angelic choirs!
I hope I will!
Really wish you both achieve this noble goal!
Praise the Lord for Bach…
You won't be disappointed. ua-cam.com/users/WFerdinand
Well said
I love these people and their dedication to bringing the works of J S Bach . You us . Thank you .
That bass looks so happy to be singing such wonderful music. It's amazing how much a smile can improve a performance.
I love those moments when Bach has the bass & continuo drop out and the music soars! And those "Steht auf!" (Get up!) entrances leading into the interweaving Alleluias. Wonderful!
This is spiritual frequency that connect you to God as Music and Art. The Bach legacy is eternal to comfort souls in good and difficult times. Thank you The Netherlands Bach Society for such outstanding performance that enabled us to connect with the Divine.
No, Mauris, I don't agree with you - it does not connect me with God (or any god), but with the higher reaches of the human mind. It is vital that we appreciate this today, with so much negative damage being inflicted on so many millions of people by a handful of self-seeking, power crazed "leaders". Follow Bach instead! Love to you, Michael x
Listening to Bach this morning is bringing me to living in the moment and enjoying the beauty of life. It's been a hard month and a half to feel positive about life after the election here in the US.
Спасибо каналу за прекрасные музыкальные записи. Очень хотелось бы послушать музыку Баха в этом же исполнении и в этом же месте. Это мечта...
Я тоже подумала о том же.
The opening chorus feeds my body and soul. It is perfect in every way. If there is heavenly music on earth, this is it.
The mein freund duet was also good
Also the BWV1027 was also heavenly
This guy composed soooo many cantatas, and each one of them sounds so good. The inmensity of His genius Is beyond my comprehension.
Usually weekly too. He churned em out at an incredible pace.
"Nicht Bach, Meer er sollte heissen". Coming from none other than Beethoven.

Nearly 300 years! 291 to be precise.
You can tell that every one of them is having fun in that intense musician way, and I love that.
I have right now troubled times due to alcohol abuse. My passion for music is massive and deep. I don´t know why i´m writing this. Take care!
Thank you.
Thanks for the upload. JS Bach wrote excellent music and he clearly had an impact on the reformation. I wish church music today was like this
The way he maintains the rhythmic drive is exceptional. The heartbeat is light yet and dancesvjoyfully. The dramatic quality is also well shaped.
From the United States, Thank you for this hope for humanity at our difficult times.
Bach's music makes my soul soar especially when it is performed with such reverence and dignity such as this impeccable performance. Beautiful

The thing that distinguishes these great performances above the ones I heard about 30 yrs ago is the virtuosity and the reverence and the joy these performers exude. It is infectious.
Check out Joshua Rifkin's recording from 30 years ago where he used one singer per part.
@@brumels1570 That I am not into, even though it probably was a fine performance. Theres even a Bach 3rd orchestral without the trumpets. I dissed that one quick.

This is my all time favorite Bach cantate. Thank you Netherlands Bach Society for this magnificent recording. Zion hört die Wächter singen ... I can listen all day to that music. I believe that Bach must have had a direct line with God when he wrote this.
Das Schöne und vollkommen göttliche. Danke und hoffen wir auf den Triumph dieser Töne und Stimmungen.
Without a doubt one of the most beautifully haunting melodies ever written. Elegant, mysterious, you see the sun rising over the horizon and beckoning us to greet the tender day. One of my favorite Bach pieces so wonderfully brought to life by the incomparable Netherland Bach Spielers! SO much talent, so much passion and joy you bring to this music. Great clarity of lines, beautiful shaping of phrases AND a full sound! I love the long arcs of the cantus firmus in the opening chorus. The right tempo allows it all to come out.
Bach makes life worth living.
This is truly the best rendition of this complete Cantata I've ever heard, particularly the duet with Matthew and Maria, the tone and blending is amazing..When Bach wrote this, I think this is exactly what he was hearing as he wrote.

@ablack7777Toda música se interpreta como si cada nota la hiciera progresivamente más elevada, más pura más sublime. Toda la cantidad de notas y silencios lo clarifica. El ideal es que al final no sobre ni falte nada. Éso consigue Bach. ❤
This was the first Cantata I listened to years ago when I was in high school. to this day, and even now, I always hear the quite tread of Christ slowly approaching Zion, while, metaphorically the wise virgins wait, joyously, as if jumping up and down like delighted children. Since then, I have discovered worlds of unimaginable delights in all of Bach's cantata's and thank God for this.
