The creativity and variety of the original A.C. band was exceptional. The songs were great. The sounds, the originality, the combination of old and new styles, the wild lyrical themes, all enthralled me as a kid. The band had some weaknesses, but those records are fascinating and, . . . so well done. It's a shame they could not have made a few more together! Neal Smith turned me from listener, to drummer. I jammed with Dennis all the time in my parent's house. Those bass parts were so musical and so catchy. Thanks to the original band for endless hours of joy, and to my Mom for letting me shake the house!
Thanks for bringing Dennis Dunaway to our attention. I have loved the 'Alice Cooper Band' for 50 (!?) years now. Since I was 10 years old in 1972. Then we knew it was a band....not a solo artist. I really like the 'Pritties for you' and 'Easy Action' albums too. 1969 and 1970 respectively. Dennis Dunaway was an innovative bassist who is often forgotten.
I learned so much about bass, and music theory in particular, from trying to learn Dennis Dunaway’s bass parts. Those 4 albums with that band are just a great collection, practically a dictionary of great bass lines.
Buxton inspired me to take up the guitar back in the 70s. Several decades later, I got a bass just to see what it was like and Dunaway's technique was amazing. The countermelodies and tone were spot-on. Even live you could get what he was doing, so many bassists have a mushy tone.
Great to see one of my all time favourite bassists getting some long overdue recognition. He and Neal Smith combined to produce many highlights on the original Cooper band albums, and for my money, Alice has never found a rhythm section to match them, particularly in his live shows. One notable exception, drummer wise, is the incredible Glen Sobel who currently occupies the stool behind the kit, but no bass players spring to mind.
Growing up and listening to the original band while they made those early albums is a fond memory. Dennis never used his pinky for fretting and still doesn't to this very day. He was always all over that fret board.
This is an awesome video...i am a guitar player...so i never got into what the bass player was playing...but always knew Dennis played some cool bass lines...I was devastated when the original Alice Cooper group broke up... not even interested in any solo Alice...i bought "Welcome to my nightmare" and pretended it was the original guys playing on it ...i turned into a little psycho for awhile... But i never bought anything from Alice again... got "Lace and whiskey" for a Christmas present and got rid of it... I remember my mom singing to "You and me'' in the kitchen once...i was horrified...
OMG the "Elected" riff blew my ass into space! Running only thirds, that is insane! And seriously, if any of you don't know the band Alice Cooper, go check em up. Love It To Death is a good point to start.
there is alice cooper, and there is the alice cooper band, its a shame that one of the best bands of the early 70s ( and one of the most influential ) is obscure by the 80s alice cooper success and the horror gimmick.
Love this comment. I was just explaining to a friend the other day about the Alice Cooper band and it's original members versus the later Alice Cooper. Such a major difference. And as my friend is a bass player I thought it pertinent to introduce him to Jeff Dunaway's magnificence.
WOW the fact that I met him and Alice's daughter for that concert Super Beasto, Bro I didn't know he was old Dennis was around for awhile! I met him as well and hang out with them. The guy is very RIP af for his age.
I think you’re referring to Chuck Garric, the singer for Beasto Blanco and Alice’s touring band bassist. Solid player as well and nice guy. He gives mad respect to Dennis always
i discovered the early ACB albums in the early 80s.great stuff.sick, but great.these songs you just played played reactivated my fond memories of love it to death, killer & billion dollar babies.fantastic albums.
Paul, this is so cool. I really like the way you break down musical habits of all these great players we know and love! Would be mind blowing to see vids on Andy Fraser and Tim Bogert one day!
The DOORS bass lines you should look into because they hired a real bass player and Ray M would write the bass lines. People are Stranger album, Soft Parade album, Waiting for the Sun, etc Often the Bass riff is a Groove rhythm that is completely different than the guitar part and keyboard parts rhythm the bass is a groove rhythm looping

After you're done with this video, Can you do a video on bass habits of Francis Buchholz of Scorpions?
Hey man I really enjoy watching this series. Could you do a video covering either Mike Starr or Mike Inez from Alice in Chains? Thanks

Yeah, really talented, and also a very nice guy in person.

My favourite bass player
Fantastic video Paul, awesome breakdown of Dennis' style. The original Alice Cooper band was one hell of a force of nature.

Glad to see him finally getting some recognition!
Remember the album Easy Action- Mr. Dunaway's playing is outstanding on that album too- Like Return Of The Spiders and Lay down and die Goodbye.
Great video. Love the original Alice Cooper band. Love it to Death is a great album, my favorite by a long way.

DD was one of my heroes growing up as a budding musician.

I like the historical spin you put into each video, to
Thanks, Brother
No mention of Dennis's bass in the wah wah pedal on "Unfinished Sweet"?
Another one bass monster player with a pick, to scare funky fingers boys ;)
Soooooo under appreciated as a bass player AND song writer
Big fan of his stuff in those AC albums.
Paul, this is so cool. I really like the way you break down musical habits of all these great players we know and love! Would be mind blowing to see vids on Andy Fraser and Tim Bogert one day!
Finally, also always wanted a guide to sounding like Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce, really cool guitar tones
Can you please make a video about the bassist of zz top i thing its a great idea
Right on...Right on... Dusty's bass tone is killer...
Great video, thank you!
How to sound like Francis Bucholz ex-former bass of Scorpions tell the basslines of Crazy World him uses Baritone tunning.
He could kick very high
Интересно! Спасибо!!!
Great series! How about how to sound like Graham Maby (of the Joe Jackson band).
Yes yes,Graham Maby.Absolutely killer player.Him and DD were 2 of my favorites in rock as a young bassist.
What about an episode about Noel Redding?
One of my early influences
I still think we need Derek Smalls featured.
And let's not forget the great Chuck Garric. Thank you.
Gutter Cat vs The Jets
How about doing a video on Jean-Michel from Gojira next? His tone is just something else
nikolai fraiture of the strokes would be dope for one of these and much appreciated
Can we get mani?
I m pretty sure Paul can adress bass player outside of the rock scene. Take a chance on verdine White?
Earth wind and fire right? He's up there with bootsy
@@mikefloyd3152 hopefully he is not dead....yet!
I very quickly lost interest once Alice went solo. It was the collaboration of the original band that gave them their genre.
8 Strings in LoveBites? DiamondsRust bass line?
You should do Fat Mike from NOFX

Why would I want to sound like Dennis Dunaway? I thought the idea was to sound like me!
No. You must sound like Dennis Dunaway.
@@Neutralius Great response! I dig it.
Everyone has influences to build upon. No one is reinventing the wheel. Especially today.
