- 10,000 Maniacs perform These Are Days on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Includes interview with lead singer Natalie Merchant. Taped and aired on November 5, 1992.
One of my all-time favorites. .the buck merchant connection...the power of Natalie in her prime ❤❤
Natalie Merchant possesses one of those rare, pure, angelic voices that mesmerizes and captivates listeners. Nobody else sounds like her. Not even close. That voice is one in a billion.
Judith Durham was another of those voices
Her voice sends me into rapture like no other
She's beautiful she sings like an angel, dances like a pixie and is from western new york. She's perfect.
shes was right. those were the days...
She was my first and only lead singer crush 🥰
So happily feminine. Just love to watch her.
Agreed!
And right now she has long black hair and half of it's gray. I don't think that's hair coloring, I think it's natural.
So glad I was brought up in a time when music was great and talk shows were normal and entertaining
What does that even mean?
She is blessed with such pleasant grace. Such a genuinely peaceful spirit.
Can we all go back in time to the 90’s? Life just seemed so much more simpler and enjoyable then. Beautiful ...
d'accord
Careful Joe, you're turning into a grouch (wink-wink).
Great decade.!
Wish I was around then. 2004 baby here.
Every decade has it’s good and it’s bad.
One of the best concerts I ever saw was 10,000 Maniacs on the In My Tribe tour in spring 1988, with Tracy Chapman opening …… absolutely phenomenal
Wow
When I saw 10,000 Maniacs during that same year, The Cowboy Junkies and then Andrew Belew performed before Natalie Merchant and her bandmates came on stage to everyone’s great delight. They were superb in concert.
In November 1989 I saw them supported by the Indigo Girls who were superb. "Kid fears " my favourite track by them now and then .
10,000 Maniacs were brilliant with Natalie playing the final encore solo on the piano = "Verdi cries"
I saw them Fall 87 opening for REM. I was walking around the venue looking for the entrance and passed by Natalie as she walked from the tour buses to the backstage entrance. I immediately recognized her because I stared at her face on a poster every day for weeks while waiting for my dorm elevator. I didn't tell my friend who she was until after we passed.
@@mrupright I also saw them in 1987 in London on that tour . That evening I preferred 10,000 Maniacs to REM. They were touring "in my tribe" , which is my favourite album by them.
Many years later on a solo tour I also walked pasted Natalie as she got out of a car about to enter Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
She was still doing her stage dancing in those days . I miss that !
ps she has a new album out April (2023) and is touring the UK and the US again with it !
I remember watching this in 92/93 when I was living in Lake Havasu City,Az. I was there for six months working for a company that went belly up because none of us really knew what we were doing. Despite that, that six months was a lot of fun for me because I’d never been out west before and was blown away by the scenery, the people and all the adventures I had during that period of my life. The job evaporated and I had to move back to the Midwest but, to paraphrase this song “Those were the days”.
Damn, this audio from 92 is solid.
Props to whomever did the transfer from its original format. Wow.
I love this woman. Still to this day her music feeds me. 28 years later she still means a whole lot to me.
Same
It's May 8th 2021 and I just listened to one of Natalie's CD. I don't have Tigerlily, which did not do it for me, but the rest is precious enough to me that I listen to it periodically. I might give another shot at Tigerlily, since I sometimes dislike/disinterest something because I'm simply going through a rough patch. When I hear her song from the 10 000 Maniacs group about coming into light, I say to myself that just like Peter Gabriel she needed to be on her own ; Peter's "version" is "Solsbury Hill".
Marc, I love her as well. Her music lifts me when the pain of age hurts.
Viva the music of The 10,000 Maniacs.
Agree 100%... Natalie Merchant is part of my life...
Years in the Army...overseas...saw her in Aspen Colorado....PTSD melts away....I don't say this lightly....an angel straight from heaven.
She's one of the artists we can feel genuinely good about.
She's adorable!
This is the quintessential shy girl, with a huge gift, who fascinates. Love her.
The soundtrack of my college years. I was obsessed with them, and many years later, I named my daughter after Natalie.
Thats cool!
That’s so sweet.
I did not hear about them until after college. I am always twenty years late
@@macrosense Fortunately, you’re never too late to enjoy the music still!
If we don't remember and remember very very quickly our country and culture is gone
It's the way she dances. It's so joyful
Oh my God, I still not over my crush on Natalie Merchant.
What a voice and a presence!
I’ve seen a lot of live performance examples of Natalie - her voice is always spot on amazing. Total pro and artist.
Great talent, great personality, plus she is Sicilian. Perfect.
She’s magnificent. Solid and brilliant band.
Ah, the early 90s....what a magnificent and magical time to be alive!!!
The Queen of College Rock Alternative in the 80's
I saw Natalie December 7, 1989 at the William & Mary Hall -- Still in love with that special soul
she wasnt lying.
those were the days.
and theyre never coming back
Maybe she should've said these are YOUR days. Love you're life. No it won't happen again it's unique noone will ever be you.
Her voice makes me swoon.
Will always be a Natalie merchant fan!! Some of my favorite music!!
One of my favourite bands. RIp mr Buck..Natalie is still with us and making superb music. That voice has an undefinable quality.
the soul of the band ,without her there is no band
Natalie Merchant, so sweet, so pretty 😘😉🎉
I will always love this song. gives me all the FEELS
Man, I loved these guys so much back then. still a great trip down memory lane to give their early work a spin.
Great voice. Great song.
Natalie is so talented she's beyond amazing....her voice is just incredible and just radiates all the best vocals!
She is as remarkable and beautiful as her voice and talent. She is also an intellectual genius.
kinda forgot how good i had it back in '92...this song helps me remember
Had such a crush on her and when she looks into the camera while she sings it makes it feel like she’s singing it to me. Heart races! ❤
Just turned 29. Time has flown.just turned 57
Great energy this one.
she's been giving me a lift for over 30 years....
That drummer is solid as a rock
Jerome Augustyniak!
He sure is. Least boring drummer to watch other than Sina of "Sina Drums".
Yes, Jerome is a terrific drummer. John Barbata and Danny Seraphine are two other outstanding drummers.
Jerry Augustiniak
Gawd I LOVE her!
Effortless Talent.... so rare.... She is a real treasure
She continues to bring me joy after all these years!!!
kkkk
Such good vibes in the 90s.
She has always sounded amazing live, just like the album. Love her.
i absolutely ADORE her...
Class!!
If everyone listened to her music this world would be a better place.
I’m in love
Love her, what a great woman, singer..... beauty....
Incredible 🥰
This came out in the fall of my senior year of high school and effectively became our class song.
😁
She’s the thunder. 💜
*I love her dancing*
San Diego and hou, tx. Got to see the band 2x heaven on Earth. Pure joy thank you
One of the greatest beauties and strongwomen of all time.
I am lost in the clouds when ı am listening that song
Brings back floods of memories.
Can I give this 10 Thumbs up?
I will donate my thumbs up to your cause
This Lady is Sublime!
🙏✝️🙏Gorgeous Stupendous Voices ~ Natalie Merchant🙏✝️🙏
What wonderful days to remember.
She means so much to me and my life
RIP Rob Buck great guitarist and song writer and founder of 10,000 Maniacs

Very sad so young
@@enhanced6892
@@enhanced6892 what. That's insane.
Love her voice..one of my favorite songs 🎼🎶
After this pandemic, 10000 maniacs and Talking Heads Reunion Tour!
Fuck yeh! Can you imagine!!! Or a supergroup with Natalie on vocals, Dave Gilmour & Mark Knopfler on guitar, Alan Clark & Eddie Stevens on keyboard, Stewart Copeland on drums....
Thanks so much Natalie you were so awesome through my high school years!
love it when Natalie does her spins
Such a unique voice. And something so shy and genuine about her. Very special
After living 11+ years in the US over my lifetime, I can honestly say that 10,000 Maniacs were at that time one of the most incredible bands I'd seen. Heard These Are Days being played in a Barnes & Noble one Saturday morning as I was thumbing a magazine & never ooked back.
If you've never seen their MTV Unplugged video, then don't waste another second. "Sublime" is the word. IMHO, the best single Unplugged I ever saw, which is up against some stiff competition I know. The album is never out of my car either. Best feelgood album I ever heard. All amazing players & with Natalie's voice on top, well that's just gravy - Totally captivating xx
I was the drummer in a band called 9,999 Maniacs. These guys came along and totally fucked us up!!
Love Jay Lenos Garage, love Natalie Merchant , and loved the 10,000 manic years. What a treat.
I love it when she does that little dance. what an amazing voice. Never thought I was going to witness a woman only 5'1 and such a strong voice. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you!
2:45 finger snap, cymbal crash, snap, cymbal crash. Great timing, lots of rehearsal and practice.
I love that part!!
Awesome
Looking forward to seeing Natalie in Ann Arbor in May!
Gorgeous talented woman
Always love Natalie Merchant!
What a absolutely beautiful woman....
Thanks to Bob Mortimer's book ....I have just discovered this song. How beautiful his praise is completely understandable.
Haha...I love the CD "long box" format. I saved about 50 of those when CDs first came out. Have them in a box somewhere I think.
I remember. Gosh it goes fast
Anton: I heard this on the P.A. in a large store -- best oldies? One of her best early songs. She has the grace and class of Kathryn Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman.
Natalie's dancing juss makes me happy!
I was at the Ft Lauderdale show mentioned in the intro. I fell in love.
Her voice so soothing...
She is uplifting.
I see what you did there 😀
Love it, a great performance!
Interesting. Rob is playing the song on half-step down open E tuning. Always thought this was played on half-step down standard tuning. I guess it was done that way to be able to get open notes like high E and B behind the chords' changes throughout the song. Thanks for uploading this gem. I really like to study some of my guitar heroes playing styles and this video provides some cool stuff by the great Rob Buck.
I've always enjoyed Buck's guitar style.
Blows my mind how little respect she gets. She was MASSIVE in the early 90s when I didn't really care for her, then when Ophelia came out, I became a big fan and I never meet anyone who talks about her.
She's so beautiful!
Perfect. Just watch Jerry and Steve. Man, those guys know what they're doing. I bet they play street hockey in their spare time
She performs like 6'1 ❤️
Every time I see her I want to gush. Her beauty, innocence, intellect, amazing voice. I could go on.
Million dollar voice and million dollar band. Got rich. Blew up.
I think she's phenomenal
What a beautiful girl . Miss Merchant.
And to think I could have attended the announced forthcoming Nov. 10 concert right in my backyard at Sunrise Musical Theater... had I only known back then. This song especially was and is transformative. It never fails to make me believe that a glorious encounter with some new and ineffable joy might be just around the corner... OH and does anyone know who was the backup singer and keyboardist? Not a regular band member and I'm glad they were able to bring her on b/c this song really depends on the harmonies.
They played at my college. I saw the posters and said, 10,000 Maniacs? what a stupid name for a band, and blew it off. A week later, I saw them on SNL, and said, oh shit, I fucked that one up.
