Great video brother. Just a heads up you could always re-pressurize that expansion tank and replace the Schrader valve. If it’s not full of water that diaphragm is intact. I’ve done this a few times with zero callbacks. I’d love to hearYour thoughts on that.
The pressure relief valve was dripping a lot (10 gallons a day) I replaced the pressure relief valve and it's still dripping. Any idea what else could be the problem ?
I think I seen you on another job where you couldn't get the tank off and you cut the pipes and redid it in same location? Wonder why that wasn't done here. Either way, as long as the thing operates and is safe, that's all home owners care about.
Those 30 extol tanks don’t need to be so damn tight . I run into that a lot . Twist them on there and give them a snug . Done . Guys tighten them down with pipe wrenches 😂😂. Not needed. Then the next guy is screwed!!!
I have this boiler at my rental. The pipe on the top right side of the boiler with the taco air bleeder next to the circulator pump is disintegrating all corroded. Hopefully it gets fixed soon....
Whenever I run into extanks that won't come off, i bend the tank back and worth until it breaks. You are left with a steel bushing. Put a 24" pipe wrench on it and it comes right out. Ive never had to add an extank. Lol
I had a Weil McLain gas boiler installed 2 years ago within the first year the elbow going up to the pressure relief valve starting rusting and leaking the guy came back and changed it..once again I check it less than a year later same thing. I believe the original pressure relief valve came preinstalled I'm trying to figure out when it was installed if it's normal protocol to leave it be or to pull the black pipe going into the boiler and add dope and tighten it down. Unless it's a faulty expansion I'm trying to figure out if the boiler might look just as crusty where the black pipe screws in. Also if the connection going into the boiler is rotten and this continues to happen did Weil McLain sell me a bad boiler is it the installers fault? Any input appreciated!
I’m here thinking about diy’ing my way through my boiler issue which seems simple. It’s just a leaky pressure relief valve. But now I feel I need to have a professional come and do a proper job and look over my gas boiler. I think it has a lot of life left and I don’t want to be the clueless homeowner that screws it up lol.
It might not be rocket science for you but I did not think you could put an expansion tank there I had a hard time taking mine off so that’s interesting why is it not the ideal place please advise
i like to let it call for heat with it on pilot. cools the boiler down to 70 pretty quick so no refill shock. i am thinking a taller ladder for mechanical advantage, my two foot crescent wrench and an extree egg fer breakfast and that old tank spins right off. nice repipe!
Hi Steve! I have a question, Could you tell me please, as an emergency, I have to patch a pinhole in a leaking pipe in the return line in my steam boiler, and I'd like to know if I have to drain the boiler completely? And please some suggestions! Thank you so much!
Couldn’t you just refill the tank back up to pressure? Had a similar problem, I opened the boiler water valve and refilled to about 16psi, changed to relief valve and it’s working great so far....
I have the same furnace, you have to brush the exchanger out every year, if not you’ll have problems, mine is 10 yrs old and I have changed out the fire box twice. I also lowered the factory 1.25 gallon nozzle to a 1.10 gallon.
Couple questions about this boiler maybe somebody can answer. I have what looks to be the same model, and I'm looking to purge the air out, but it seems it was installed differently in my house. Instead of having a shutoff valve on the return, along with a purge valve above that, it has neither. Instead, things seem to be the opposite. The circulator seems to be inline with the return side on mine where this unit in the video appears to have the circulator on the feed side? Almost seems like I need to reconfigure how mine is installed, because it makes no sense how it was installed to me. :/ Also, is that water feed valve (the one that lowers the pressure to inject water into the system) installed to feed into the water output from the boiler? I guess perhaps that location doesn't matter, just curious
@@JD-ce4so tell that to the NYC inspector I got in my building a few months back. Made us repipe 15 pressure relief valves that were installed sideways.
“Warm boiler filling with cold water so you want to go easy with it” Proceeds to open the water feeder full blast and open a valve to release air moving water even faster 😆
Funny have the same model and same issue. As of now I think its just relief value it was fine until I lifted it to release some water and its been dripping since.
Hi Steve, I sometimes watch your shows and thank you for all these info, anyway I service my own oil furnace, I have a question , I don't want to use my furnace for heating anymore, but use it for hot water...can I get water out of the pipes in the reditoirs( drian them) ..if yes how can I do it ? I also add this, I have 2 zones ( 2 unit house).
Why would you replace the expansion tank ? Just because it had no pressure or low pressure , you can just recharge it to 12-15psig . And you know the air bladder is good, cause when you checked for air pressure no water came out . Seemed unnecessary.
Dumb question: Why can't those nozzles be cleaned? Or why can't they be made of a more durable material, like stainless steel, or even something hard like porcelain? ...just musing...
A good trick if you have a really stuck tank. Heat the threaded portion with a torch a bit ( you already knew that part ) then after canadian tire or such had their sale and you bought 4 pairs of chain grips for 60 bucks connect a few together and form a really big chain complete with voice grip handles..,mind the pipe, you are now torquing with a much much larger lever ( maybe didn't know that part though ) . ;) great video
Wow, you have a tough crowd. So many busting your chops. Not Necessarily this time, but generally. I’d have left that expansion tank there, too. Why open Pandora’s box? Mark it as out of service and date the new one like you did. Out of sight, out of mind. Put it all in the service tag. Even if you’re not the next tech. it’s all there. I’ve never seen you jury rig anything, and always came to the correct solution. Much of your customers equipment is from when you know who was a child. All of these second guessers. Way back when, I worked on industrial water de ionizers. Like a softener. Instead of salt, cation was regenerated with HCL, and the anion bed was regenerated with NaOH, ( caustic soda). My sales rep. was alway pissed at me because I only replaced control valves when determined to be bad. His position was swap them all, replace the injectors, replace all return springs (they were stainless steel). He only made money on parts replaced and I wasn’t with his program. So, bag it with What makes big bucks. My customers were loyal and asked for me , knowing that they were treated right, not just getting the shaft. Ultimately, we all prospered. I think you are a pro. No muff too tough. Obviously, servicing this customer for six years and going, you must be doing it right as many, many others are long time customer’s, too. I salute you. Happy Thanksgiving 🍺🦃

I'm curious, @18:52 why do you need a 45° nozzle with that head? I have same head and put .75/60°B in there. Why is a less wide spray better?
Steve, would teflon tape, then megaloc on that relief valve threads have helped? I would think those threads are alittle course.
I agree. Ive had those nipples leak with just using pipe dope. I always teflon and dope
@@gidzey4783 or rather have used a proper pipe wrench on it & made another rotation. Just be careful as to not over tighten & crack that brass PRV.

Noticed hi limit 180 low 160 with a differential of about 18. Is that the norm?
did you check the water pressure first? What is the PSI?
If prv tank and water reg was changed but still blowing prv. Could the HW coil be bad in boiler? There is no water in furnace chamber though.

Does anyone know why there are so many power venters where Steve works? I rarely ever seem them here in NY
Its that time of year, we all want it now !
My 2 cents, have you thought of using an ultra-sonic cleaner for cleaning the burner parts? Works wonders, even with only hot water in it.

Water feeder in boiler supply typically. It reduces street pressure to 15-20 psi. Doesn’t matter if your circulator is in supply or return
Steve is a great guy
I'm confused, I thought that pressure relief valves need to always be installed vertically.
Nicolas Lalaurette pressure is pressure no matter which way it is going

Why you don't just recharge expansion weasel with compresor
If the tank has no pressure in it the diaphragm inside is no good and it would just leak out again. It wouldn't last long.
I swear I could hear air/water escaping from the schrader valve when Steve was testing for pressure. Yet, the gauge read ‘0’. Defective gauge?
