Carl if you guys need any help or whatever come see me over at the Dillon Hangar. Also you need to go talk to Vern Rich about your welding repairs he can take care of all of that stuff you described easily. His shop is over off of Deer Valley and 9th. Looks like a fun project.
Pretty neat having come across this video. My apprentices father had owned the plane before it off-fielded. Used to be based in Odessa, TX. This would make him happy seeing it back together. Good luck, you’re gonna have a blast once it’s flying!
Hey Carl, all told, things look pretty good for you. Certainly want to hear what our mechanic’s inspection turns up. I’m following your progress intently for some extra inspiration as I work through my own rebuild project. Best of luck for you!
Thanks Steve! I want to hear what he has to say as well. BUT, he's out of town this week. Hope to pin him down soon, granted I may have to take a short break from UA-cam so I can study for a cert.
Good luck on your project, Carl. Can't wait to see videos of the restoration and when it's finished. IMO, I don't know if I could take on such a project, I think I would rather have kept looking for a plane that was already flyable or very close to it, but still the same hope the best.
I'll get into the why in the next video I'm sure. I was going to do that when I introduced the plane, but it didn't fit just yet. I went with a project for a reason. =)
No idea. I want to change it just a bit. have it angle back a bit more and shorten a little. Need forward clearance for some special stuff we're putting in the plane.
My first question is, what's been done to the fuselage to support a O-320? Did someone just bolt on a 160hp and go, or has the fuselage been beefed up? That's the first thing I'd look at. I'd also remove the fabric and do an inspection of all the tubing, especially around the cabin area since it had a hard landing. Since you're not going to do aerobatics in it. I'd look at installing full length wings. A J-3 with that much horsepower will be fun. Good luck on your project.
Answers. No idea it's been flying this way since the 70s with over 750 hours on the frame. I know there were modifications done. We're inspecting the plane inside and out. for any corrosion, cracking, or other issues. I would love to get full length wings, Actually talked with a company about it at OSH. Thanks for your thoughts.
Plane looks good, it's a GO for sure. Nothing mayor to repair so far. You are doing a good job with the inspection and evaluating damage. Very smart thing to do at this point of time. It will take time and $$ we know that, but it will be so worth it at the end.
@@flywiththeguys ooooooooh mkayy. Be safe! Tail draggers aren't the safest but I'm sure you will fly it great! Can you live stream your first flight in it????
@@flywiththeguys Glad to be helpful ;-) Don't forget special fluid for the leaking struts. I'm not sure if WD 40 is also good for that. I'd recommend a combination of duct tape and super glue.
Common practice to cut those old, stiff fuel lines. They get so hard and stiff, that they are all most fused to the fuel line. Best to replace with new anytime a wing is removed.
All fuel lines firewall aft have been replaced with hard lines. =) All new flex lines firewall forward. Anything having to do with fuel has been replaced, accept the wing tanks. But we modified those.
Hey. Looks like a nice project. But to be honest - you are sure that is a J3? Doesn't look like one for me. Cowling is different. Also the landing struts look weird. Highly customized maybe?
It really is. The landing gear is the same, but it has been converted to a O320. It’s now registered experimental exhibition. It’s also a clip wing. This guys setup for some fun aerobatics. G meter included.
I believe they are the stock size. I'm getting new tires hopefully this week. I've seen the window cut out on a few other planes, I'm wondering if it's needed more with the clip wing?
@@flywiththeguys the cutout on the clip wing J3 lower door is required to clear the lift stuts - without it, the door will not fully open. There is no cut out on the stock J3.

👍☑️ If you engine doesn't have major issues it's not too bad, fingers crossed Carl and good luck. We will be watching and cheering you on!
Thanks! I'm hoping the engine is good. My mechanic and I will be doing some really good maintenance before we try starting it.

Very cool! I've talked to one of the past owners. I'm excited to have the opportunity to get this guy flying again!

Can't wait to watch the repair process on the Cub!
I cant wait to get started on it myself. Right now I'm in limbo waiting on a more permanent home.
Happy for you Carl. Love your enthusiasm. Hope to see it parked in front of the Mesa Grill in Sedona someday soon,
Hopefully this summer!

@@flywiththeguys Looking forward to your next video about your new airplane! She's in good hands! 👍
The first step of a project is to evaluate what you have, it has begun. Great job and video Carl.
Thanks Brian! I'm REALLY looking forward to getting this guy flying again.
Cool project Carl! This is the sort of stuff I love! Are you an honorary HangaRat?
Well.... I'll be working on this guy in a hanger. =)
☑️👍 that would be a great cross country trip for you Jay, go visit Carl!
What's up with that aft control stick? That intake box will fix, I had the same issue on one just like it.

What airplane are you looking at?? Nothing major to repair?
Can't wait to come and visit!
=) Please do!
@@flywiththeguys Text me!
@@flywiththeguys I need to chat, as it seems I am befuddled with the new device! Zero GPS on that trip last sunday!

Oh, I thought you said you added a nose gear and shifted the main gear back 😅. Are you keeping it a tail dragger?
I was thinking about it at one point, but the nose is already SO heavy. Would have been a cool project for sure.

This is such a cool project! I guess some super glue and duct tape won't fix that. Looking forward to see you rebuild this baby!
I'll make sure to put some in just in case. You never know!
And WD 40, nothing works for long without WD 40!

@@paratyshow Sounds great for helicopters with over ? 30.000 moving parts. Spray 'm in!
In addition to needing all the repairs you mentioned, you’re probably going to need a tailwheel endorsement as well!
Totally. That'll be the next series. =)

The notch in the door is added so the door will clear the lift struts when opening it. The wheels and tires appear to be the stock J3 Cub 8.00x4 size.

We'll get here flying!
Yep! As soon as we get this in a more permanent home.
From the gear longerons out and down : Just buy all new / the 5/16 gear bolts = 1220
I was looking around for new stuff for sure. Trying to work with some companies on a few things.
The door is altered for the clipped wing.
Thanks! I've started gathering that. I'm so happy that people have been helping me out in the comments on theses. Seriously, THANKS!

I hope so! I want to fly it to OSH next year.
