FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
I'm a flight instructor myself and after watching this, I feel like I just gained like a 100 new tips on how to be calm and teach students in a better way. What a great instructor. I honestly feel like I could fly a sea plane by just watching him instruct lol.
Right on! Glad you enjoyed it!
meet bhatt
I'm a wanna be and I could not agree with you more!
The skills of the sage pilot in handling instruction inputs where awesome
I took an intro flight with Lou in February, 2016. Great guy. Looking forward to going back in a few weeks to get the rating.
me too & I'm NOT even a PILOT
I'm not an instructor. but holy crap I thought the same thing, this guy is a great teacher!
"I'll stop you at 90." LMAO. Sounds like the kind of a guy who learned to fly well enough to land a P-51 on one wheel or a B-17 on one wheel and the tail wheel but flies Cubs because the view is better.
He seems like such an easy going instructor. Definitely seems like the type of instructor I would be comfortable with.
+Regan H i was about to comment that myself, he so chill
Really seems like the kind of guy that you learn with! What a gentleman of aviation.
YES!
Yes! Lou is awesome. Clearly the kind of pro I'd like to learn from and not another hours-building yahoo who views his students as stepping stones. I'd like to be like Lou someday.
Outstanding video, the instructor is surely a consummate expert on float plane training, clear and concise guidance is of the essence, especially on landing. Thanks for sharing his expertise.
GREAT Instructor!
Nice work, floats are a different animal to deal with. He was an exceptional instructor. Very calm, confident, and positive. Bravo!
If I ever decide to take some lessons, I hope I get someone like this. Talk about calm, and knowledge/experience to burn. A true mentor. Love these videos.👍
I love his calm demeanor.
+Falutin Free - I know, right? Lou is awesome!
"When you get to 90 ill stop you hows that" That guy is a LEGEND!! lmao. We need more trainers like him
This kind of instructor really helps sell the training....I think this pushed me over the edge and now I want to sign up
"OooOOOOO Steeveeyy!!"
Tian G best instructor, lol
This CFI is so comforting to listen to.
J3 is a blast to fly. The old timers are a blast to fly with.
" Just put the thinggy there and go ahead hit the tree. Doesn't matter." Lol awesome video. Never heard a training pilot say - "doesn't matter" a dozen times 😂
Michael Robert well because it doesn’t matter lol
Fantastic instructor right there!
Very cool video! I can't believe I fly into Winter Haven, FL all the time and I never go over to check this out. Flying Sea Planes in the Bahamas is on the Bucket List for me. Low and Slow = Fun Flying!
+steveo1kinevo - totally! Let's collab on that and make a solid video series about it!
+FlightChops Amen.
+FlightChops Yes yes please do.
+FlightChops
Both of you go get your float endorsements, one American style, and one Canadian style, and compare. All on camera.
+steveo1kinevo Collab in the Bahamas!
There is something so elegant, so magical, about the way the floats come off the water. I suspect it is the way that we typically see things move through the water which creates the preconception of those objects remaining in the water: At speed, a boat hits every rising crest in the water with a resounding thud and splash. But floats on a plane, with each rising crest, the splash is diminished until there is none. Instead, an increasing gap exists between the floats and the surface. How did this happen? What has made this large, square float become so weightless that it rises above the water?
I understand the science of flight, but will never fully comprehend its majesty or its magic. Thanks Steve for sharing your adventures with those of us who are for now, only flying a cubicle. "Best view in the world..." I concur whole-heartedly.
When your instructor is surprised that you're not a commercial pilot has to be one of the highest compliments. Great vid as always Mr Chops. Thank you :)
I love how calm the instructor is.
He was so awesome.
We lost him recently unfortunately.
@@FlightChops I'm so sorry!!! Seemed like a genuine person. Prayers
Came back here to relive great memories from a year ago. Crazy how quickly time flies. It's been a great and successful year for all of us! Looking forward to seeing you in a week!
GREAT INSTRUCTOR ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ He Talks on Everything You Have to DO 👏👏👏👏👏
Lou seems like such a charismatic man! Hard not to like him.
The passion and innocence in flying this makes me miss my youth and flying in FL. so much fun
Oooo Stevie.
Never flown a float, never even been next to one, but to me there is something absolutely sexy about the look of one. May have to rethink my retirement goal of a home with its own strip, and consider a home on a lake instead.
Love the older guys teaching method. Calm, cool and collected, and very positive feedback. Hope someday to get a float rating by someone just like him.
What a smashing old bloke to learn from!
He's about the coolest chap I've ever seen, lol. I can't imagine that anything would ever ruffle his feathers.
If I'm ever in the position to learn to fly, I'll gladly move across from the UK to learn with this man
I feel that I could take off and land on water already now..
He seems to put you at your ease.. yet still talks clearly and with obvious knowledge and authority in his field.
Just perfect.
Thanks for posting.
.
Steve, that was totally awesome! I loved your instructor. What a mellow, gentle voice and fatherly warmth. And, some amazing flying skills, Steve. You were doing like a pro right off the bat! Amazing! Thanks!
I love older instructors.
When I grow up I wanna be Lou for sure...a guy thats been in the game so long that no one would blame him if he didn't give a darn, yet he's a guy who loves to teach and share.
You have a beautiful j3!
I went to church camp in Winter Haven Florida and every day a Piper Cub with floats would fly over head. I asked one of the camp counselors who that was and she said he's a world-famous water skier in his 80s. She said that every Easter he would drop eggs into the field next to the church and let the kids have them.
I Also saw a Beech Starship fly over-head there once.
That was amazing! I'm a Private Pilot myself with a little tail wheel time, and I grew up as a kid in Minnesota, watching and riding with my grandfather in his Cub and Champ, both on floats and skis. Watching this video just brought me back. Great instructor, so calm and cool! Great job and awesome flying! Love the videos. they are addicting. Keep it up!
The instructor seemed like a great guy. fantastic video. thanks

I loved how flying was second nature to him, and just couldn't you feel the love? The most heartwarming flying video I've seen to date!
Great video, my son was an instructor at Jack Browns, then he flew Falcon 10's for a while . Now he flies Caravan Amphibs out of Ft. Lauderdale all over the Bahamas. I flew a J3 float plane out of Jack Brown's that belonged to someone else. It was my first, and was a blast. I almost bought it but couldn't at the time. I just bought a 46 J3 land plane in February. Got about 14 hours on it now, and love it.
gives the warning "don't sink" a whole new meaning.....
That little yellow plane will always remind me of the 1996 film “Alaska”
Great job Steve. Always impressing your instructors.
Steve, this is without a doubt your best video to date. I know you say you are not an instructor and are careful not to give advise but by letting the third party give the instruction you have nailed it. I felt like I was sitting in the plane with you soaking up the advise and feeling the wind with the door off. I have a set of floats in my hangar for my Challenger II advanced ultralight just waiting for me to complete my training. This video has just pushed me to get it done asap. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi Steve, I also took two hours of sea plane lessons with a Cub on floats. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. Some years later, a few of us bought a Republic Sea-Bee, where I accumulated about 250 hours, flying the lakes of Tamagami, Ontario. My friend had an island on the Southeast arm of Tamagami. We had permission to keep the airplane at Sudbury airport during the Summer. I had every situation any sea plane pilot would have. The thing is, I never got a seaplane rating!
Excellent video, it gave the feel of actually doing the flying, I have .6 at Jack Browns, it's a Sun-N-Fun thing to do. What I really like about flying floats is that if you ever have a really bad landing all you have to do is look for the floats, the plane is right under them.
Thank you “Stevie” for sharing these float training videos with us. My Uncle Dwight flew float planes in Southeast Alaska for 30+ years. I idolized him & am determined to own a float plane before I die. I’ve always wanted to know the intricacies of float flying. You’ve satisfied a lot of that curiosity. Very enjoyable to watch. Thank you!
Visited this place today Steve and had a blast in one of the J3s. Awesome fun and what a place! Land where you want 😅
FlightChops sticker still on the door too 👍
These sea planes are insanely charming.
I love how Lou is a very relaxed, affirming, and confident. He must have calmed your nerves.
What a fantastic instructor, great video! Thanks.
Very nicely done. Love your instructor. Very chilled but very skilled.
Love this video. Fantastic instructor. He is the standard. Thanks for sharing!
What an awesome instructor!!! I've had a bugger of an instructor before, it makes for a miserable experience, until I switched to another airport's flight school and then all was good again.
This channel is the best - I always look forward to the next video. I re-watched this one and ended up signing up for seaplane lessons to get my ASES rating. Thank you, Steve!
Heckuva day! Really good work. He's a great instructor too.
A joy to watch. Thank you for taking us along.
That looks like so much fun!
Excellent video again...
magic! that looks like great fun.
That looked like awesome fun Steve....what a wonderful gentle instructor!
Awesome instructor!
What a great teacher!
Great video. It doesn't get much better than float flying.
Definitely one of my absolute favorite videos! Thank you for letting me ride along:)
Awesome!! Looks like a ton of fun!
flying with old people is so great
I highly recommend Jack Browns for seaplane flying. If your at Sun-n-Fun you have to put it on the to-do list. You'll be a better pilot because of it. Seaplane flying IS addictive! You'll love every nano-second I promise.
I've always thought water landings would be really fun. Now all I need is one of them new Icon A5's, best of both worlds.
Another A+ video Steve.
Great Instructor!!! and great video as always!!!!!
awesome video, reminds me of flying with my dad in a j-3 when i was a kid, brings back some great memories. thank you !
Beautiful stuff!
I used to see a J-3 Cub on floats just like this as a Student Pilot in Central Florida back in the late 90s. I wouldn't be surprised if this were the same cub. I thought I remember seeing it flying in and out of a small pond by DED but I don't see any evidence of Sea Plane activity there now, but hey a lot can happen in 20 yrs! A few years after I got my Private I was able to get some stick time and Dual instruction in a PA-18-150 on floats in South Carolina and to this day it's the coolest flying I've ever done! I've pretty much lost any interest in becoming a commercial pilot but I'd love to get into some Back Country flying one of these days!
My dream is the fly a Cub with floats!!! So cool!
Awesome! So totally awesome!
Nicely done. Just classic!👍
Very cool Steve!!
looks like so much fun!
What an awesome Instructor!
What a fantastic instructor! Great video.
Hey Chops, this was SO neat to watch! Your instructor was very calm & effective in showing you how to do it, too!
Excellent training video
Steve, there's no end to your flying skills i am so proud of you and I love how good you are with your family it proves your humility and again thank you for not being an egotistical arrogant individual i am learning from you and i am 40 would love to get a ppl and ferry fly
Pretty good Chops...
Did my ATP MES at Flagler Beach in 1994..
Then my COM MES at Philadelphia Seaplane Base in 1995...
What Great a Fun... 😺🙀
Very well done young man!
This old man is a good instructor/teacher
He is actually my flight instructor here in Texas
Really nice job from both you and your instructor.
Loving your videos
Thanks for sharing Steve awesome taste of float plane technique.
This is awesome. Maybe I should get my float rating and a plane with a good useful load and load her up with swimming gear. Flying, land, and then go in for a swim!
Fantastic video! Thank you...Cheers
Love your videos, keep em coming!
Well done on this one Steve!
I am sooooo doing my float rating this summer ! Thanks for the awesome video Steve.
That was such a great video! The pilot reminded me of my wife's grandpa who had been a brush pilot in Alaska. Very cool.
This is the instructor I want for my float rating, excellent video as always. Thank you very much for sharing.
Most laid back flight instructor ever. Nice
Wow! Great video Steve!
Awesome video! I completed my float endorsement shortly after i received my PPL. Its the funnest flying I've ever done. That cub looks so easy to fly!! Nice work.
Really glad you do alot of cub flying. Highly interested in geting pilots license to fly a cub. Thanks so much for the fun videos and saying what all your doin when your doing it.
The intro the seaplane flying is excellent! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for sharing! Brings back memories... Doing turns while taxiing on step is a weird force to feel in an airplane. Flying at Jack Brown's was (and is) loads of fun!
Wow brilliant stuff
Awesome stuff!
Great job and thanks for sharing this awesome video
This makes me want to build a float plane for no good reason at all. Awesome video. What a great instructor. Reminds me of my grandpa who flew j3 way back (way way back) in the day.
