I understand your joy very well. It is so nice to see your family sharing your joy as well. I own a Kitfox and have only flown tail-wheel, they are awesome! Welcome to the Bush Planes Family and to the Experimental world. You will find how fun it will be to own and fix your plane in the Experimental category, there are so many options. My goodness, you will have so much power in that plane. I take off in 100' you will probably beat me. I live in Lehi, I would love to go and see your J-3 when you have time.
I hope that it gets put together sooner than later. I'm waiting on a few things to really get the project started. But believe me when I say I'm happy its experimental. Granted, I'm running into certified parts pricing, which is frustrating.
That's awesome! Congrats! When you said "O-320" I literally said out loud, "WOAH!" That's crazy high power for a cub, I can't wait to see what kind of performance it will get!
Congratulations Carl! Now you can experience first hand what owning an airplane costs! Makes getting your private pilot “license” seem like a drop in the bucket 😆
Awesome! After thinking it over though, I think 160 HP in a J-3 is a bit excessive. At that point, I’d think you need to start worrying about the structural integrity of the plane.
@@zachatttack3107 I've thought the same thing, but it's been doing aerobatics since the engine was installed in 1977. I'm assuming there was some magic done to help the planes structural integrity. I'm digging in to find out.
Hope it goes well! By the way, love the paint job on the thing. It’s not quite “Cub Yellow”, but it is a very attractive take on an aerobatic Cub. Enjoy the project, man.
Congratulations Carl, Love the paint scheme. Ya know if you're trying to keep up with that Just Plane Silly guy, you're already behind....hahaha Kidding, just busting your chops. It looks like a fun project, it will be interesting to see what avionics you put into it. Oh, and it needs a name.😂
Congratulations! I’m excited for you. Had to laugh at Kyle’s question and siding with Mom. 😆 As for your comment about purists, that ship sailed when she was mated with the O-320. Looking forward to watching your progress (I’m restoring a plane right now) and future adventures!
@@omegacage I could. There are not very many though that make a practical airplane. Certified and Experimental Armature Built are the 2 that give you the freedom to fly wherever you want. I'm not going to have that ability, but hope to work something out with my FSDO.
That's so cool! I know you have been wanting your own plane for some time now. Enjoy the process of building it and have fun in the skies. Sorry it couldn't be a Grumman though :( The only thing that I don't really like about it is that it's a tail dragger. Is there anyway you could make it airworthy still by making it a tricycle gear setup? Is that even worth it?
There is one guy that did. I was literally thinking about doing it and thought to myself, what if I swapped the gear from one side to the other, moving the wheels back. Quick google search later and I found a guy that did it, exactly like that. Added a nose gear and BOOM! Then I thought to myself, I've already got a potential useful load problem, better not add too much weight.
@@turnerator21He has already done it. He shifted the gear back and added a proper nose gear. Switching from a tricycle gear to tail dragger is a dramatic shift. It's safer for him to just go with the tricycle gear setup. I'm sure you know why it's more unstable but here is why: 1. It flips over if you are not gentle enough on your landing. This happens when the momentum of the back is much stronger than the front. This happens when the front gear slows down too fast. 2. You have to be extra careful with turning! Turning with wheels behind the center of gravity makes turning super unstable! You are pushing the plane to turn rather than pulling it towards the way you want to go. That's why cars turn with the front wheels. It is soooo much safer to use a tricycle gear setup.
@@flywiththeguys I used to joke that it took off at 40, cruised at 40, and landed at 40. I was usually passed by cars on the road I was following. (60hp!!)
It would have cost me approximately $800-1000 to retrieve it. Then another $2000 in parts to recover it. Then $800 for an annual inspection. That's close to 4 grand and it hasn't left the ground yet.🤢 I'm thinking my wife had the better judgement.😁
Congrats on the purchase, very exciting 🎉
Thank you!! 😊

I'm already seeing the $$ Fly out the window. I thought AvGas was expensive....
A J-3 with an O320?? That sounds like fun. From looking at the cowling, I’d think the plane looks more like a PA-18.
It has a cowl from a Pa-18. Well half of one. Video on that coming soon.

Can't wait to fly it! It really does have a sweet paint job.
@@flywiththeguys It has the same skin as my profile pic here! Great project!

J3 cub is definitely on my top favorite airplanes. This is one I hope to fly eventually.
One of the reasons I thought this would make an interesting project.
Congrats! It’s going to be more expensive, more time consuming, and MORE AWESOME than you ever imagined.
All true. Especially the expensive part.
Congratulation's Carl and Family! Looks like a fun project, looking forward to the progress. Do you have it on the north side of the airport?
It's in hiding right now, but it will be on the north side soon!
" You can, but you have to be gentle pulling it back and letting it go"

LOL

It's going to be a roller coaster I'm sure.
How freaking cool!!! So what’s your estimated completion time? And that boy of yours is going to go far!
Slow... Mostly because of parts availability and schedules.
O Yes nou that is cool. Please keep as in the loop. Can not wait to see More.!!!!!

I used to have an RC of that exact plane. The thing is, until this video, i wasn't aware any real plane had that paint scheme.
There are a few planes with similar, but not quite this, paint job. The Citabria comes close.
