  • All throughout Star Wars (the Phantom Menace to Revenge of the Sith and into Return of the Jedi) we have seen only one Sith Master and one Sith Apprentice. Thousands of years ago, the rule of two was created. In this video we will go in depth as to WHY the rule existed and why Sith continued to obey and respect it.
    Thanks for watching! :)

    Hey my friends!
    What did you think about the Rule of 2? Would it have been better if the Sith just grew and grew into a big clan?

    • @Noah123204
      @Noah123204 7 років тому +148

      I think that the if the Sith grew into a giant clan, it would have expanded on the iconic "Star Wars" title, making a better and larger theme of good vs evil. More battles would most likely occur and possibly a bigger war than the Clone Wars/any major scale battles Pre - Star Wars Episode 1 would've happened.

      As to the rule of two it was a pragmatic decision based on the needs for some stability in a world of perpetual assassination and lack of trust. By acknowledging the problem and codifying the system then some stability for the strong years of the present over lord and the provision to ensure a strong competent replacement trained in more than just fighting skills but leadership- Think of the Turkish Emirs who had their brothers strangled to ensure no civil war and social continuation and growth among'st a brutal people who could easily fall into anarchy and fail.
      I think the world the Prequels and the KOTOR and KOTOR II show is amazing and visionary. It is Star Wars at it's most evolved and deep, It is what most of the discussions are about precisely because there is so much to talk about rather than the original trilogy. I think even the acting is REALLY good (Palpatine!) and that the portrayal of Anakin was perfect for his insecure late teenager personality. He PLAYED HIS ROLE, perfectly. He is not Luke and this is part of why HE becomes Darth Vader not Luke
      The whole point about Anakin is he is really gifted but a tragic personality, not strong enough for his talents. He has a much much worse past than Luke and on top of that the wrong personality to deal with these tragedy's. He is much more arrogant AND insecure than mellow Luke and is also wrongly treated by the Jedi council with only Qui Gong being wise as too what was needed (lots of love, support AND critique) because unlike the blind suspicious Jedi Council he was open minded and in touch with what was actually going on. Yoda is not wise at this point (and later admits this) and quite blind as are the other Jedi or else they are suspicious (negative).
      Qui Gong loved Ani instinctively and was his father in practice if not genetically. Anakin would not have resented instruction and discipline from a secure mature loving father figure he admired rather than an 'older brother' Obi Wan to who he felt competitive. As an older man Obiwan had learned his lesson so well he forwent the traditional Jedi practice of child cult manipulation and let Luke actually have the proper family life that Anakin never had but really needed.
      I, myself, was less than happy when the new films came out mostly because Jar Jar was so jarring a personality. He was just an annoying clown fool I thought (like most) but now I do not think that even that is right. It is clear that either Jar Jar is a Sith himself (perhaps the senior planner who pulls the strings while being camoflaged as a fool or just a tool of Palpatine's as he is always where he needs to be to turn things Palpatine's way, including becoming THE Senator who convinces the Galactic Senate to give up liberty ala Hitler 1934 with the 'emergency proclamation' (created by the needs of the Clone wars; yet unseen by the blind Jedi and Senate).
      It has gotten to the point that I hardly can hardly be bothered to watch the original trilogy as they seem as the 'Hobbit' does to the 'Lord of the Rings', a simple child's nursery rhyme version of a far deeper dark complicated dangerous adult world!

      Star Wars Theory I love your intro dude. I wondered this too. I mean, 2 isn't exactly an order. It's a partnership. But your explanation answered my question. No there won't be a rule of two because Kylo and Snoke are not sith. Snoke told Kylo that sentiment caused the fall of the Empire. That sounds more like Yoda than it does a sith. Snoke is something else. I think he's either the shaman that taught Qui Gon part of the secret of eternal life, or a fallen angel from Millius Prime.

      come one after over a thousandth years were there still just as strong as the 4 strongest jedi combined and the rule would also insure that knowledge would be lost because a apprentices that grows stronger than his master before the master could teach him all that he knows will cause a massiv lost in knowledge not to mention that if the series would be a little more realistic that would by just 2 have the sith ended a long time ago by an accident that would kill them.

      The Rule of Two is kind of stupid. I know the Old Republic era Sith were more quantity over quality, but it was much better in it's way. There probably weren't many Sith, if any, that were as powerful as Sidious and Vader, but thousands of Sith is still more powerful than just two. And with that many Sith, there's bound to be some that are truly powerful. Plus, not all of them are going to be ones that teamed up with other apprentices against their masters. It could also make some of the Sith more powerful, since they constantly would have to be fighting against their rivals in the order. The Rule of Two era Sith lacked this challenge entirely.
      The survival of knowledge, the discovery of knowledge, and the survival of the Sith in general would also be better off if there were more Sith. The reason for this is because there's more Sith that are researching, and more Sith to actually hold onto and protect the knowledge. And it's a bit risky having only two Sith at any one time because if those two Sith die, the whole Sith Order dies with them. That's exactly what happened in RoTJ. The Sith are much more likely to survive if there are a lot of them, even if it does cause a lot of conflict, there will always be some Sith alive.

      @@TheMaxMaxTheMax I think how it works is that Darth Bane intended for each successive Sith apprentice to eventually become stronger than their master or die, until one apprentice succeeded, and then continue the cycle. Basically, each master must train their apprentice both as a weapon of their own will as well as to create a Sith even more powerful than themselves, knowing that they will likely kill them one day. Of course that didnt stop Sith like Sidious from trying to both create a more powerful apprentice as well as maintain control over them to preserve their own life

  • @zulubro
    @zulubro 6 років тому +405

    The Rule of Two has merit, and a major weakness too. Namely, a Sith lord invests years of his life training an apprentice. If the apprentice challenges for the throne and fails, that process will have to start all over again. The next apprentice is likely to be successful, but not because he became more powerful than a master at the peak of his powers, but because the master is now likely past his prime. And that undercuts the philosophy of each new master being more powerful than the last.

    • @ZONE-fj8ly
      @ZONE-fj8ly 6 років тому +63

      Darth Bane had faced this problem before but he managed to find the holocron of Darth Andeddu to solve it. Even if age ravages the Master, they would just have to find a new vessel and make it their own. That way the Master would remain youthful and strong until the apprentice is proven the strongest.

      Also there is zero contingency - if something happens to the master before being able to train an apprentice, the line of Sith ends. Sith Lords aren’t immortal, they could die in accidents, or what if the intended fight between master and apprentice ends up killing both?
      Also Sidious killed Plagueis in his sleep, meaning it’s not necessarily the more powerful fighter who continues the line.
      That’s why I always believed there must be some secret contingency plan, like another watcher in the background who would interfere if such a disaster happened. Not necessarily Jar-Jar of course.

      @@magicmulder deep. hadn't thought about it to that extent, but that's exactly right. i see the Sith as a cross between a cult and the mafia. the only way to survive and to thrive is they have to have a code, a higher calling (that everyone adheres to) that supersedes personal interests, and puts the order's interests above all else.

      Mosts of this is true but not because of some limit of the dark side but because the sith betrayed each other too often the dark side and the light side are no different in the level of power they have just the users. • @jacobprigmore1301

    Huh, this gave me a theory. When you were talking about the Force is more like venom than fire, and how the sith creating an almost Darwin like "the strong shall survive" mentality, what if it's just the sheer amount of force users on the sides of the force that determine how powerful a force user is? Meaning, Vader and Sidious were able to eradicate the Jedi even though eras prior thousands of Sith couldn't do this, because the dark side was "distributed" amongst such a large number of them. This could apply to Luke now, who (supposedly) is the most powerful force user, because all of the Light side is within him instead of thousands of Jedi like in the clone wars. Basically, by having less Dark Side/Light Side users, individuals become more powerful and become the vessel for that form of the Force, making them immensely stronger than a large group. Idk, just a theory...

    • @ZeidKhan
      @ZeidKhan 7 років тому +32

      Some have theorized that, because earlier Je'daii believed that the force was a yin and yang type deal. Always in balance, one to oppose the other. That no matter how many or who followed the dark or light, the two forces of Ashla and Bogan would always find balance to equal and oppose each other. You can read it hinted in earlier (no longer canon) timeline books during the Old Republic Era. ;) The later Jedi didn't really follow this belief and teaching though. So it's a difference between the old and new eras.

    What if The New Sith-master (former apprentice) dies before he finds a New apprentice or dies before The New apprentice has learn everything!?
    How could The rule of two survived for a millennium with those risks!?

    • @joey5106
      @joey5106 7 років тому +88

      Than he dies. It stops one master-apprentice line not the entire existence of the sith. There are multiple ways to obtain information about the sith way than just learning stuff from your master. There are books and holocrons, or they learn things from eachother.
      In the comic series ''Darth Vader'' you'll learn that Sith Masters don''t often give their students information like Jedi's give to their students. A sith student needs to obtain information through spying, threatening people or murdering them for information.
      There is a scene in the (I think) 1st issue where Vader asks something to Palpetine and Palpetine answers ''A Lord of the Sith asking questions and expecting them to be meekly answered? You are a poor apprentice if you think so...'' so there you go. Hope I answered that question for you.

If a Sith Lord were to, say, wreck his Harley or get shot with a blaster, he deserved to die as it would mean he was weak/foolish and therefore unworthy of being a Sith. The rule of two was DESIGNED to get rid of the weak/unworthy/accident-prone.

    "I think I’ve talked about this before, but-seriously, Darth Bane was quite possibly the worst thing that ever happened to the Sith. Like-weird, demonstrably false zero sum/“dark side as solute” models of how the Force works notwithstanding, he managed to do what the Jedi spent millennia attempting: he removed the Sith as a galactic power. Congrats, buddy, you consigned the Sith to a millennium of being a complete non-factor, destroyed their culture and history, and risked the sad miserable remnant that was left being utterly obliterated and forgotten if both master and apprentice got into a fucking speeder accident!And all the Banite Sith had to show for it was … 20ish years of ruling the galaxy (but not openly-and not even by virtue of Being Sith; Palpatine would’ve won the galaxy whether or not he was Sith, he was just that good at politics) followed by some farmboy blowing it all to hell? Bane was the best thing to happen to the sith the brotherhood of darkness and the sith as a whole before them was destroying itself left and right with infighting and it’s a serious problem when weak apprentices can gang up on a dark lord and kill them then install a weaker substitute.
      The sith were still a major galactic power their enemies belived them dead but they were hiding in plain sight as politicians, artisans, builders, and prominent figures in the galaxy.
      Hell Plagueis himself was the former head of the intergalactic banking clan.
      Plus while they were in hiding they were amassing power, bane was already stronger then any of the sith that existed in the brotherhood of darkness and each successive master was stronger than bane.

    I have a theory. Depending on the time when the prophecy about Anakin was crated, would the rule two make it so when Anakin “brought balance to the force” there would (roughly) be an equal number of Sith as there were Jedi. The rule of two would greatly bring down the number of Jedi (making them Easier to make extinct). That might have made it for this reason.

Sidious wouldn't have wanted Ventress possibly killing Dooku in a fair fight, and so simply told Dooku to kill her so as to tie up some loose ends prior to Sidious then disposing of Dooku in episode III, effectively eliminating all other dark side users other than himself.

    Both the ways of the Jedi and Sith are equally wrong. Think about the force and emotions like flames. The Jedi are always keep the flames down, always fearing that they could get out of control, that someone might get hurt. Yet such a small flame is next to useless in lighting up dark nor can it warm your heart.
    The Sith are not only pouring superdense radioactive fuel into the fire, they also throw themselves willingly into the inferno they create, to be consumed by it.
    The true way lies between the two extremes. It would take enormous amounts of willpower, character strength and skill to learn, find and hold this balance, but those who master the force might truely become one with it.

    The very purpose of the Rule of Two was to create the ultimate Sith Lord, one that would eventually dominate the galaxy with his (or her) sheer power in the Dark Side. But should the chain of Master and Apprentice break just ONCE (as it did in RotJ), the whole plan goes to waste.

With how the sith act I doubt that the sith would be so selfless as to put the good of the sith above themselves and teach their apprentice everything. I think the Sith should've been more like the jedi and they whould've won. Let each Sith lord have a padawan until he proves himself worthy, then cut him lose of his master and give him an apprentice on his own, give the former master another apprentice to fill the apprentice he lost. The apprentices would've been less likely to turn on their master since they would eventually gain power if they were loyal. And would gain an apprentice with it.

    • @arandombard1197

      In the extended canon, the Sith on multiple occassions wiped out the republic and the jedi. Yet every single time, just as they were about to win, they became greedy and turned on each other as they were desperate to be in power after victory. This meant that they would always end up sabotaging their own victory and success at the last moment. The Dark Side carries with it many advantages. One of them is ruthlessness and an absolute lack of morals to restrict their behavior. This can give an advantage over their enemies. But it also means that they lack true unity, born out of compassion and respect. The inevitably self-destruct while the good guys would rather die than turn on each other.

      @@thejazer1580 Grey Jedi aren't really an order, so much as a loose classification for Jedi that are no longer purely aligned with the light side of the force, yet also do not necessarily embrace the dark side. They tend to regard the Force as tool, much as the Sith do; but since they do not embrace the dark side they do not fall prey to ambition or lust for power. The Jedi tend to keep as close a track on Grey Jedi as possible; as most of them are not a part of the Order, the Jedi have little authority over them, and are concerned they might become Dark Jedi (Jedi that have embraced the dark side, not entirely dissimilar to the Sith).

  • @gregmatic2861
    @gregmatic2861 7 років тому +37

    Rule of 2 is still stupid because instead of 2 apprentices joining to over take the master it leaves the master vulnerable to Jedi who would always have greater numbers. That's the reason why Palpatine looked beyond the sith and got political power in the republic. He was basically admitting he wasn't as strong as Jedi outright and needed more numbers.

Though I suppose it's deliberately a 'so stupid it just might work' kind of plan as it plays on the Jedi orders arrogance, they loved to believe that they had destroyed the Sith and that they could halt their return and that nothing would be changed by events for Republic, they were so wrong.

      The sith were reckless and destroying themselves for power making them weak against the Jedi. It was time to start fresh, something new like the rule of two. This allowed the sith to lay low and strike when the Jedi least expect and in the end it worked. I always felt the Jedi should have followed the rule of two as we’ll or something else along those lines. It would mean less padwans falling to the dark side and less of the strict codes that’s more about keeping Jedi in line then truly enlightening them on such natures. They’re would be much more of a focus on the force and be less involved with politics as they would go planet to planet, city city learning the force and helping those in need. The large number of Jedi or sith is their own downfall as the sacred teachings of the force was spread too thin.

      No, it's lame and doesn't make any sense. Lucas just added it because there were only 2 "Sith" in the OT. If he added more in the prequels, he'd have to explain why they all disappeared by Ep. IV, which he clearly didn't. It was much cleaner, and easier, to make up some "rule" that keeps the Sith to 2 so that Vader and Sidious remain the only two Sith by the start of Ep. IV.

    I find the rule of 2 to be impractical, illogical, and unsustainable. cool in theory, but there is no way an order that dwells in secrecy and deceit, that is capable of going undetected in the force would be able to enforce the rule of 2. people unconnected to the sith on opposite ends of the galaxy would grow up with abilities they don't understand, some would use it for good and others would be corrupted on their own for any number of reasons. now they might not learn the ways of the sith, but ultimately there is nothing preventing some random number of these force sensitives with in an entire galaxy from just stumbling on a sith holocron, or archive that would give them information about the sith. my honest opinion is that in SW: PM when yoda says "always 2 there are, no more no less" I don't believe for a second that he is confirming the rule of 2 but merely stating that the sith work in pairs. think about it, it is a completely brain dead concept to put all knowledge from an entire civilization into just 2 people. if they die it's the end like in ROTJ, palpatine and vader died and they were the 2 sith lords, but we now have snoke and Kylo ren. how could that be unless palpatine didn't follow the rule of 2, or there are other sith cells in existence.

    I think the rule of two was a brilliant master stroke. Not only for the reasons you named, but also because it insured at least temporarily a sense of loyalty between the master and apprentice. A master to keep the Sith alive had to protect their apprentice who was an investment of time and training. The apprentice had to protect their master because they craved the knowledge and power their master could provide them with. In a twisted way it almost made them partners. Two powerful selfish beings for a time worked together for a common goal. Whenever the Sith forgot this doom was not far behind. One could say both Plaguesis and Palpatine died because they failed to follow the rule of two. Both wanted immortality, and both were killed by an apprentice who exploited their weakness: pride. I would argue Palpatine could have lived for many more years if he had invested more in Vader, thus insuring his loyalty and not looking for an apprentice to replace him. Both Canon and Legends paint the picture that Palpatine had a very hands off approach to Vader. In short Darth Vader gained most of his power before and after his defeat on Mustafar by himself. Just think how much more powerful he would have been if his master the Emperor and bothered to actually train him like he promised.

      The Jedi don’t benefit from the rule of two. The rule of two doesn’t cause less disturbances it just concentrated the siths power because no longer could sith ascend by any other means but surpassing their master. Before the rule of two apprentices would at times team up and kill the master then a weaker one would arise. The Jedi don’t benefit from having a limited number of only 2 because unlike the sith the 2 Jedi aren’t going to kill each other in a duel to prove which one is stronger with the victor becoming the new master and continuing the cycle.

    Did they though?
    Palpatine had trained Maul while Plagueis was still alive and was already working to target Anakin by Episode 1.
    Dooku had Asajj Ventris as an unofficial apprentice while he was Palpatine's apprentice and, at the same time, Maul had survived his duel with Obi Wan from Episode 1, recovered, and would have taken on Savage as his apprentice.
    During the Clone Wars, there were technically 5 Sith with Palpatine also actively trying to turn Anakin.
    There's even a case to be made that Grevious was Dooku's second apprentice since he taught him how to wield a lightsaber (a force user's weapon).
    Even after Anakin became Darth Vader, Maul survived into Rebels era so there were 3 Sith at least during that time (and Maul was trying to recruit Ezra as well so there could have been 4).
    Even in the Empire Strikes Back, Vader was trying to recruit Luke while Palpatine was at the height of his power.

    The Sith empire nearly brought the republic to its knees and they were both fighting the Republic AND themselves, now imagine if they were united among themselves and solely focused on the republic.
    Forgetting about the boundaries of cannon
    Rule of two is flawed and has its own weakness, it has been shown trough the SW stories that force doesn’t have a given quantity or potency, it all depends on the wilder, The exiles, Freedon Nadd, Marka Ragnos, Darth Revan, Vitiate, Exar Kun, etc.. all form the time of many and were no less powerful for it, it could be argued that by theory of the Rule, many should have been way above the previous mentioned ones yet most are just cannon folder in comparison, then you have the sith own nature of betrayal and plotting, always holding something back for they know betrayal will inevitably arrive, little pieces of wisdom not passed on, small techniques not thought, forms forgotten…..Small and ineligible in each generation this losses may be, but in time, build up, they do. ^_^
