Embarrassingly true, this is my 3rd comment on this video. ;-) But I thought it relevant to reveal that my V7x arrived today, along with a black grille from the normal V7. Wow! This thing is absolutely perfect for me (baritonish voice, though not as low and lush as Anton’s) with the V7 grill on it. Without the V7 grille, it‘s of course a no-go, as Anton pointed out in an earlier video, for the V7x is designed as an instrument mic, and doesn‘t handle plosives at all well with the its original grille. Thank you, Anton, for bringing this brilliant mic & grille combo to my attention! And it doesn‘t even cost much. The sound quality is amazing, even when up against some much pricier contenders (depending on one‘s particular voice, of course).

I own an Ethos, which I adore, thanks to you. Now I’ve found a v7x used and ordered a new V7 grille to go on it, all for about $100 USD. I’m very excited to see how I like it. Thanks again for continuing to make wonderful videos. (Also still patiently waiting for more baloney)

Oh, how splendid you are now comparing these directly! I‘ve got my V7X coming next week (based mainly on your previous videos) along with a standard V7 grille. So it will be interesting to see/hear up front if that is indeed the combination I‘m after, or perhaps rather the MK, instead (the looks of which I‘m not keen on, for a do a lot of solo performances at weddings and such, where black is more suitable).

The mesh on the grilles do look different. That being said, they sound identical. I listened on Sony headphones and KRK monitors. I would still buy the MK for the cool look. Great video as always.

The MK sounds a tiny bit louder/warmer/fuller through my system and to my ears, but it's barely noticeable and I'm not sure it's $80 (Canadian) better. Interesting comparison! I like the fuller bass sound of the MK/V7X a lot more than the plain V7, I think you're really on to something with this series of videos.

I heared the ever so slight difference to. I used the blue dragonfly DAC with the DT770 PRO 16 OHM. But it is not always noticeable. When I use the 4x more expensive Amiron I cant hear it. Cuz the bass on the amiron is already fuller. So you need also a very neutral headphone with the DAC.

It sounds to me like the MK model has a very, very slightly lower & duller reproduction and the VX is very, very slightly brighter but this is wearing headphones and I highly doubt this minute difference would ever be heard in a live situation unless there is a person at your gig that has a hearing that's similar to a Bat, when all is said and done the original V7 seems to have a much brighter sound than the other 2 but the black grille with the read foam is by far more attractive

I love sE microphones. From around 2004 onwards they have their own production facilities. But since this is in essence a small family-based company, designs can slightly differ from batch to batch. I don't think they outsource any part of the production nowadays.
I've seen some of their microphones with mixed case engravings, and others with only uppercase for the same model. That the microphones have mostly the same components is to be expected, only the V7 and V7x grilles differ because if the acoustic differences you hinted at. (the x has the capsule closer to the 'instrument'). The larger grille handles plosives better and is more aimed at voice.
I love them both and use them both for spoken voice, depending on the voice.
If I'm correct the same capsule as the 7x is also in their drum microphone the v.beat. (don't have that one to check )

Please try Blue Encore 200. It's a killer for a low voice. But feedback is bad, so can be used live normally.
V7x definitely works for low voice. But handling noise is monstrous, Like it more than any dynamic under $200.
Still like 57 on snare better.

PLEASE Do one more small video about handling noise. is it better on MK?

The flats on the grill are there to stop the mic rolling around when placed on a table.

Hello my resonant friend! ;^) At 3:33 there is a difference in the wiring, which if SE manufacturing is consistent in their wire color coding, suggests the capsules, if the same, are reversed polarity from the one to the other. On the left, the red is in the upper r/h corner, on the right, red is on the left. On the right, the bottom yellow is diagonal to the red; on the left, I can't tell if the lower l/h solder joint is a yellow wire. The red kitty corner to the yellow just looks to mirror the V7 and V7X. Or, SE isn't consistent in their wiring color coding. It would be interesting to see their engineering drawings and manufacturing instructions (retired manufacturing QA person here) ...

Thank you, well spotted. It didn't even occur to me to check the wiring! As you say, what it means is anyone's guess. Wiring error? Deliberate?

@@AntonBrowne In aerospace where (supposedly) everything is manufactured to an engineer's drawing and specification, the color of wires would be specified to facilitate inspection, testing and repair. In a commercial industry it's anybody's guess. They might simply reel off a length of wire and solder it from point to point. The only way to tell, would be an Ohm meter from point to point between the capsule and each XLR pin.
PS - I am enjoying the V7. Where I have really appreciated your videos, Alton, is for a baritone/bass voice. So many mic tests demonstrate them with higher-pitched voices. Likewise guitar tests where they NEVER hit the open low E string - playing mostly the top 4 strings! Ugh! Nice to know what a mic sounds like on someone with some testosterone! ;^)

Slight tonal differences between the MK and the V7X: The MK feels a tiny bit warmer/fuller, and perhaps a bit more responsive. However, that might have something to do with the levels on your board, or perhaps with slight variances in capsule tolerances. It seemed like the MK was getting warmer/bassier at a greater distance from the mic than with the V7X.

You are usually better and faster to recognize findings.. I think your new headphones might not be better…
