    It's the coloring of the mic. When you want to record you may want that sound that you hear in the old recordings of the bands of the 80's and 90's. That is just is complete different if you use a high quality condenser mic that will record a much richer but different sound.

    I have a copy of this lens and I am always amazed at how sharp the images are. I was taught to store lenses with the aperture blades closed down ( the A setting on Pentax lenses) to minimize the blade area which could come into contact with too much oil.

      Thanks for the tip. It seems to have settled down, lazy to open, but shuts dows fast enough. I work the aperture a couple of times before use. I could go for repair but I think I'll leave well enough alone.

    Looking for my first condenser stage mic - Im a keys player and its mostly backing. My fav dynamic is the Beyer V70 - and Im considering the SR117 and the KMS105 primarily. DPAa 20-28 and Shures KMS8 are in the mix - but not the primary choice. Thoughts?

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne 8 днів тому

      Hmm, I think you'll have to try them. All are quite different to the V70 (I don't know the DPA) and the 117 and 105 are quite different to each other. The KSM8 is not a condenser and unless you really like its proximity thing, it's pricey for an ok mic. If you're serious about buying, you may find a shop that will get them in for you to try. Good luck.

      @@AntonBrowne Id like to thank you a lot Anton for all your work in your videos - they are absolutely brilliant for comparisons. While you havent directly compared some of my options- you have covered most of them compared to some - and then those with others. While you can never tell until you actually hear yourself though them in your own environment and PA - its as good as it get to narrow down choices )and in the UK ou simply cant fins resellers that stock most - and when they do theres generally only one option to try). In the end Ive gone for a Sennheiser E965.....It seemed close (ish) to the Beyer V70 I use as a dynamic in general character - and while having slightly less top end its a much smoother top end (the point of a condenser in many ways). the switchable polar patterns will help too. i runed out the Senny MD series and Shure's NXN8 and KSM8 as I really wanted condenser. The KSM9 is too "shure" like (I dont like the SM or Beta 58). the Earthworks SR117 seemed to be voiced quite like a dynamic - so why not use a dynamic. The Neuman KS104/105 were really nice up top bu seem a little light in the low end. The DPA and Gelfell are both extremely flat response - probably ideal for stage work, studio and broadcast work but for a live band, would probably need that high end lift on the desk anyway that other have built in (there is after all a reason most have it). The Earthworks SR40V actually seemed to be the prefect choice for me (and you did A/B the V70, e965 and SR40v too which confirmed it in my mind) but at £750-£999 its just too expensive for me to justify really. IF I don't gel with the senny I just might have to suck that extra cost up though - but hopefully that E965 will do the trick in the live mix. Once again - thankyou for the time you take to make these ic reviews and comparisons - absolutely the best resource out there for mic reviews and comparisons.

    Tried the 8/C, cleaner and clearer and possibly sibilant sound. Well behaved plosive rejection but without low end authority! Returned it! Better than thr SM58 but very similar to the e835, beautiful mic, no foam in the grill… a finer mesh inside the outer mesh, not sure all this research is worth the price!!!

    • @tylerg8305
      @tylerg8305 11 днів тому

      @AntonBrowne It's a bit like tuning a guitar by ear. Once you have trained yourself to do it and it becomes natural, you're only reminded of the skill and training required when you go to teach someone else how to do it. The "ear" for microphone quality is one that I had developed some by accident, just playing and listening to live shows mostly, but had never thought about training it further nor had I realized the full importance of the right mic for the job. For these reasons and more, I'm grateful for your work.

    I need a new mic lol. I have a Beta 57, and a Beyer Dynamic V70. I do like the V70 but it needs replacing and as itsd noise handling isnt the best Im looking at others. Ive considered the MD431 and teh MD445 - along with the KSM8 and this new NXN8. I like a little air on my vocals which is probably why I like the V70 - though its possible a little too much - but I also like the heft the V70 has in the lo end. any thoughts?

    It’s weird how some mics sounds clear for one voice and for another voice looks muffled. I like a more brittle and crispy (and even with a tenor voice with good mid highs, I find it hard to find what I want ) I don’t know, I liked the e945 but sometimes it hits my ears so hard. And all the others sounds sweet and smooth, it’s like missing something I can’t find on Eq. And I really hated the v7 on my voice. My most go to it’s b87a, ksm9 (supercardioide)and ksm9hs(hypercardioide) but even being clear enough, it sounds smooth 🤔

    I'm coming here 2 years later on the same search: I've got a low voice that goes down to an A1 chest (maybe an F#1 occasionally as I learn) up to an E4. Not much oomph below a B1 though. A year ago when I started exploring I started at a D2. I sing backing vocals and a few leads on a relatively noisy stage. All of a sudden my Sen e935 doesn't work down here very well. Above a D2 it was OK. My voice always sounds kind of 'hollow' and all you hear is the air if I get right on it, it seems; maybe a better mic would help that, too. All the mics mentioned in the video and comments discussion run from $400 to much more, out of my budget for our 3-piece cover band, or at least more than I want to spend. We only play out about 40 times a year, I guess 3 shows worth wouldn't be too bad. But... I was looking at the EV ND96 for around $200, much more in my price range. Very tight pattern. Reviews mention it being a 'fuller' sound, which I think I also need for the middle part of my range. Is there anything else out there that I might want to consider? Or just bite the bullet and look at the one Anton mentioned, or some others in the comment. Thanks for any input anyone can provide. My goodness that video, those two lowest notes!!
