  • In this video, I'll review five budget-oriented microphones that could be used for UA-cam, podcasting, or your next video meeting (Zoom, Teams, etc.). You'll hear audio samples while I sip a delicious Anaerobic Peruvian and narrate a brief treatise on why coffee is great. Come along for the ride!

    The sE V7 sounds amazing!

Great review! SE V7 is the clear winner for recording in an untreated room for podcasts.
AT2020 Condenser sounds great, but it's picking up fan noise or whatever that was in the distant background.
I use Shure SM58 mics for podcast recording in an untreated room. They work phenomenally well.
I just picked up an SE V7 for review and can't wait to try it out!

Great video. Can you share a link to the shock mount with built in pop filter you're using on the V7?

Amazing comparison video. You show how each mic performs under a typical and normal circumstance (no sound treatment). It's perfect for someone who plan to use these mic under the same environment.

Thanks for the kind words! I am sure that at some point I’ll be investing in sound treatment, but that’s definitely months, if not years, away. I figure lots of people are in the same situation, and wanted to show what you might expect to hear! Part 2 coming soon, where I give the Deity and the AT2021 a more fair shot by positioning them properly, stay tuned!

I’ve been looking into the SEV7 for a little bit now. Want to use it as my podcast Mike. I love your pop filter set up on it. What specifically are those filters and shock mounts do you have put on the seven?

What is the shock mount on the v7?? It looks cool and seems like it works well

It’s a Rockville mount with a pop filter, works quite well for lots of different mics! I did take it off the stand it comes with, but it’s probably my favorite mount. www.amazon.com/dp/B07FT3MDRK/

Hey this video is amazing you should keep posting more gear related videos. I own a zoom h5 and se v7 myself for podcast and voice but I'm planning to buy at 2020 for voice overs. I have a similar room as yours with no treatment. Do you suggest I go ahead with my purchase or just use the se v7

Thanks for the encouragement, glad you liked the video! Got another one in the edit right now, where I give the D3 and AT2021 a more fair comparison by positioning them in the same place as the AT2020, stay tuned for that comparison!
I think that the AT2020 definitely has a more open sound than the v7, with crisper high end coming straight out of the mic. However, the tradeoff in echo in an untreated space is definitely something to consider, especially if you don't want to do a lot of work in post to remove the reverb. I currently use Izotope RX8 to get rid of reverb for my podcasts, and it takes a lot more attention than the sE v7 to get that out. I think that if you like the sound of the AT2020, it would probably be easier to EQ the air frequencies of the v7 than it would be to get the AT2020 and deal with the reverb.
The next video also has some examples of what these mics sound like after running through RX8 and Nectar, just gotta wrangle all the audio in the timeline properly, haha!

@@brewingjitsu thanks for the elaborate reply. I already am editing the v7's audio on audition and wouldn't want to put some more work into it since I also handle my mother's cooking channel

@@knowyouryoga Yeah, I would stick with the v7 and just make a parametric EQ preset with a gentle boost to frequencies from 4k-8k. The AT2020 would probably require more work to reduce reverb, and may not be good value for what you're looking for.
Here's a great primer video on EQ for dialogue: ua-cam.com/video/pjMCyLsRNig/v-deo.html
