    The way you test the microphones is different than i am used to seeing from reviews.
    It is exceptional in my opinion.
    By digging into the exaggerated extreams like the sibilant S sounds and the deeper bass sounds, we can see the effect of each.
    Thank you for this fantastic review.
    I am now a sub.

    My voice is absolutely nothing like yours, but your reviews are by far the most useful for looking for a mic. I can tell which ones will have clarity in the bass, smoothness in the treble, recessed or hyped mids. I am mad at the UA-cam algorithm for only now showing me your channel. Also, the volume and clarity of the recorded audio is perfect. There is nothing worse than a poorly recorded mic test with lots of background noise or post processing.

    This review approaches the level of art, so thank you for both the excellent review and the demonstration of its potential use as a new tool in the toolkit. I loved how you put it in the larger context of change/evolution/progress and challenges of the marketplace. The sE story is a great complement to this video. Thank you, and I'm really curious to see what can be done with these two sound capturing devices. I want to try it on double bass (particularly because of its rejection at the 90 degree angle with a bassist in between a grand piano and a trap set).

    I don't think I have ever seen a comparison like this or maybe I have but it was you only long back❤. I just felt blessed when you had the same idea about swapping the grilles, that's exactly what I was searching for🙏. And I don't think any more comparison video is needed for me. P.S. your videos are the last 'full-stop' to the searching/seeking people do while microphone hunting. Just bless you🙏✨🎶💖

    Interesting. Think i'd like to try one of those VX7Xs on a guitar amp, and even more so on a bass cab. Could be really good. SE have always, in my experience made decent mics at good prices. Nice to see they are keeping up that trend.

Also, that looks like a Mackie mixer, it'd be fun to see you go through your thoughts on mixers as well. Wonderful review! I have been looking forward to hearing your voice on it. I am glad you like them. Here in the US, the v7x is $99...amazing to get that low end and it sound really good for that. I used it live a few weeks ago and it worked great.

    I did a spectrum plot comparison in Audacity between the Sennheiser e965 and the sE Electronics v7x on my baritone voice. I used the same reading and found interesting differences. I then applied some equalization to see if those differences accounted for the differences heard on playback. What I noticed was this.
    Two main differences were a) between 40 Hz - 172 Hz and b) 6300 Hz to 11,800 Hz. The lower range was consistently 1 dB louder with the v7x and the upper midrange was around 3-5 dB higher on the e965. I didn't expect that, but the v7x frequency response graph does have a modest dip at 8 kHz. When these differences were compensated for on the v7x recording, the two mics sounded much more alike.
    Remaining differences between the two mics may be accounted for by the following. From 13,400 to 22,000 Hz the v7x was an average of 3.4 dB louder than the e965! The differences in these frequencies were very consistent. And between 258 Hz and 4000 Hz the v7x was on average 1.6 dB louder than the e965. The midrange curves tracked one another fairly consistently between the two mics, crossing at numerous points. The v7x curve was ever so slightly smoother overall than the e965 plot.
    That's one purdy dynamic mic ;)
    Anton: thanks again for your work and love of mic reviews.

      As a guy with a very deep baritone voice, would you suggest the V7X over the V7 (or something else) for spoken words such as podcasting/streaming/short narration? Seems like it would definitely need an additional pop filter for the V7X though.

    • @FiveEars
      @FiveEars 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheVagineWhisperer That is exactly my use case and my type of testing. If you find yourself hearing the nuances that Anton finds and prefer what he prefers (extended range and flat frequency response), then I would say you would love the v7x. To be clear, I agree that the v7x instrument mic head and wind screen are simply NOT usable for handheld applications either singing or speach. I just ordered a v7 head today -- I'll update my post here on this business. But with the v7 head I reckon the v7x will be great.
      For context: I have only confirmed Anton's work with my own testing of the Sennheiser e965 and the sE Electronics v7x (with the v7x head). I use a SSL2 interface, and AKG k371s and Sennheiser HD650 headphones. I wish I could run the gamut of testing those Earthworks beauties, but there you go.
      Personal Plug: My two hands-on mic tests have persuaded me that a) YT is adequate for reproducing acoustic nuances (but only with adequate playback gear), and b) Anton is excellent at describing acoustic properties of microphones. I have not found anyone as good with noticing details and matching verbal descriptions (or impressions) to the relevant acoustic phenomena. And in 2020-2021 I've been up to my eyeballs in equipment reviews trying to find good stuff. So kudos to Anton.

    Wow. I can hear the difference in the high frequencies between the 58 and the V7 on my iPad speaker. The V7 sounds great!

  • @FiveEars
    @FiveEars 3 роки тому +3

    Wow, I never thought the v7x would sound so much better than the v7, having heard other YT reviews. I'm using a Hidizs 9 DAC/amp and AKG k371 headphones. The difference between the two mics was significantly more pronounced listening with the AKGs than with my Sennheiser HD650s. The reason is, no doubt, because of the extended range of the k371s (5 - 40000 Hz ; down to 5Hz!). And frankly, truth be told, the ICON Pro seemed somewhat thin and washed out when compared to the v7x (at 26:32). That too was a shock. So sE Electronics -- we need the Anton Browne v7x kit! Let's go!

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  3 роки тому +4

      I think the V7X is a great performer, especially at the price. I've noticed that the Icon Pro works well for speech intelligibility across lowly reproduction systems but I find myself missing something in the lower frequencies - of course, low quality reproduction doesn't go low, so Earthworks knows what it's doing. I'm tempted to revert to the SV33, as why not use the best as I'm lucky enough to have it!

    • @FiveEars
      @FiveEars 3 роки тому

      @@AntonBrowne I would support using the SV33. It is a veritable reference standard. Absolutely phenomenal on spoken word - sonic gold for voices like yours. The audio quality survives even YT formatting. And some nerds use high quality reproduction gear even for YT ;) In my opinion, speech intelligibility is too low a standard,, rather let your voice teach, delight, and move.

    We compared the V7X to a V7 & a KMS105 for a live outdoor acoustic gig, we used a simple foam top on all 3. Give the SE’s a little boost at around 10k.
    On the V7X we lowered the bass a little around 100hz. It Sounded gorgeous on females. Smoother than the other two .

    • @Excellent2009able

      @@AntonBrowne not sure if SE do, I know what you mean tho, many are too thick looking & sounding too in some cases, wonder would a spare inner foam from the V7 or similar fit over the smaller grill on a V7x !? Tidy size !Canford UK have great pop shields! Or if there is a smaller sm57 pop shield that may work either.
      I felt the V7x ‘s own grill is nicer on it. Just a thin shield would be a class find. If you find something let me know an same as ! :) Best Wishes

    I found an m88 TG for sale, so I went to my top reviewer source -- I listened to your Beyer Brothers video. But the TG didn't seem to compete as well against the m88 (n) as the v7x did here. So I analyzed the most comparable sections of this video (viz., 24:20-24:23 v7x vs 24:23-24:27 m88n). I did not find a lower to mid push on the v7x. What I did find was that there was a midrange to upper midrange boost with the m88 (n). So said the spectrum analysis comparison. Six of one and half dozen of the other? Equalizing the relevant v7x section (+5dB from 1.5kHz to 3.5kHz and the same between 3.8kHz to 7.8kHz), the v7x sounded much more like the m88(n). I decided the TG wasn't for me; the v7x does the job better. Thanks. BTW: I think bringing back the sv33 as a reference would be great. The icon pro sounds good on PC speakers, but with cans...

      Kind of a weird question, but I have a Beyer m160 I use for harmonica (same as Lee Oskar and Mickey Raphael). Do you feel the v7x or M88 would sound closer? What I like about the sound of the M160 is that it is rather flat and in no way bright or shrill. The EQ curve of the v7x seems to be closer on paper. What I am reading here is that the v7x sounds more neutral? Thanks!

    • @FiveEars
      @FiveEars Рік тому +1

      @@harpninjamike I haven't experience with the m160, so can't say. Anton's (older) m88 (n) has a brighter and cleaner upper end than the v7x imo. However, finding another m88(n) for sale in the wild in similar shape seems difficult to impossible; I've given up.

    After doing my research and getting and using a V7 model microphone (Billy Gibbons special edition) I can honestly say that it's an incredible mic, way better for my voice than the 58 and more comfortable to handle. I also had a Senhiezer e845 a while ago and noticed that the V7 is better than that mic too for me. I also use a vocal processor when I perform and found that it sounds just as good with the processor and compliments it very well.

    The red hot female rock band out of Mexico, The Warning, use V7 mic capsules for their lead vocalist and bassist/background vocalist. They used to use SM58 capsules on the same transmitters. Their vocal intelligibility seemed to go WAY up with the switch. Dany's leads are much crisper and smoother with the V7... The 58 always had too much proximity effect and made her sound like she was singing into a thick wool sock. You can hear several of their live concerts on their channel. I would have no trouble trying both on a female voice and seeing how it fits in a mix. The 58 is a classic, but... It's not for everyone. You can best hear the V7 live on *Hell You Call a Dream,* recorded live at Pepsi Center in Mexico City last Fall.

    Thanks Anton. I often use the v7x myself for speech but that bass lift can get in the way. Sounded great with your scat vocals because you were using the bass purposely. I like the V7 as well because it’s a tad lighter down there.
    BTW - watched your CV vid and I’m guessing you must have been working with a guy I worked with in music education, Trevor Tomkins at Trinity on their nnew (at the time) jazz course. Jeff Clyne and those guys?

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ian, yes I remember Trevor - though I came a little bit after him. I can imagine that the V7 X needs careful handling for speech. I agree with you about Sony camcorders, I too have ended up with 4! The little one for overhead stuff for the mic reviews, the 100 is the main cam and stays put on a tripod in my room. The two others go out and about to schools and gigs etc. The menu system across them is the same, as are the batteries, so that's a plus, and the quality is fine to my mind.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig 3 роки тому

      Trevor was an amazing teacher too. He truly inspired some young oddities!
      I love the Sony Camcorders. The cheaper ones only work in semi-manual mode at best, but actually, that’s great for the people that they are aimed at.
      Your UA-cam audio is beautifully clean. I’m finding that somewhere between my computer and the upload, tiny artifacts get introduced which is a bit embarrassing if you are reviewing a mic.
      I sent a video up and someone commented. I heard the artifacts on UA-cam but not on the computer. So annoying.
      I’m an ex oboist, not a singer and boy, do oboes give mics a run for their money. Must be all the overtones ringing away....
      I see you test for overtones too which is really interesting. Oboes can almost make mics ring like a bell!

    I contacted sE Electronics (May 18). They have only one distributor in the US (KMC Music), who are too busy to look up options or quote a price of an separate v7 head. Or, at least, there still no answer [May 30]. This I don't understand. Aren't available options not priced in the parts book? Anyways, the v7 head part number is MH19, called "Mesh Head," and the "Wind Shield" foam alone is part number FM3-2. They say the head from the v3 won't fit on the v7's.

    Do you know of any one doing similar reviews considering sopranos? I'm really happy with what I've learned from you, but I haven't been able to get good recording of my wife. Apparently boosts to the "air" regions translate to "overt harshness" when recording operatic soprano. None of the men I have seen reviewing mics seem to take this into account.

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  3 роки тому

      Interesting. A soprano, isn't that high in terms of actual frequencies as far as a microphone is concerned - high C is a little over 1kHz. Because of the harmonics generated, a low male voice will contain frequencies way above that. What the soprano has, is a lot of energy (fundamental) in those higher frequencies and because they tend to use a pure tone, they probably don't have masses going on in terms of harmonics higher up. I can imagine that the average 'shaped' mic may well not suit. I would have thought the V7 X is worth a shot, as it has less of this shaping. At the other end of the price scale the Earthworks SV33 is as natural as I have experienced. Maybe they'll send you one to try (even if you have no intention of buying) I'd be interested to hear the results.
