Here she looks beautiful but age probably took a toll on her and wanted to stop the process by doing surgery. I'm not justifying plastic surgery but the psychology behind what people do plays a huge role.
She said in the documentary about her that it was partly because she'd always felt so ugly. Because no one would ever call her "beautiful." They'd say she looked "good" but they'd never call her "beautiful." And being in show business, surrounded by gorgeous people and constantly having your appearance critiqued (especially when you're as insecure as Joan always has been) can be pretty devastating.
does joan have any jokes about her monthly periods? i mean, what does she do with her old ones? does she sell them to blood-thirsty indians? i went into a pharmacy last week where they have a half-price sale on tampons. but you have to hurry. the sale lasts for a short period only. i hope you are all offended!!
