Kelly D ....exactly. And that umbra is made from the lamp being maybe 20x it’s diameter in distance from the shadow. The Moon is almost 120x it’s diameter from from its shadow. Move the lamp 6x further away, and it would be about the same umbra/penumbra ratio that we get from the Moon.
A lot of people don’t realize that the shadow from the eclipse that went through the USA (and all other eclipses), was actually larger than the Moon, and reached from upper Canada down to South America. Of course that was the penumbra only, with the umbra being only 79 mi wide.
What TAS doesn’t realize (among everything else), is that all shadows that we see, have an umbra and penumbra, just different proportions of each. In order to not have a penumbra, it would need to be a point light blocked by a point object.
@@dross4207 Most of your comment is "spot on" (eclipse pun warning) however a point object can't actually cast any shadow because a point has no width or area. A point object would have to have a finite amount of matter in zero space so its density would be infinite and it would already be a black hole, making rather a mess of any attempt to cast a shadow with it. You are right that the light would need to be a point source, however, there is also no such thing because a light source requires matter/energy and this would again result in infinite energy density and a black hole.

@@admiralmu4353 the formulas for what are made up? Geometric formulas are derived from things you can verify yourself. Like easily on your own, sit down with a piece of paper, pencil, ruler, and protractor and check as much as you want. This video is nothing but geometry. All easily verified that way.
If you doubt the physics equations derived from experimental data then that's a lack of trust, but at least I can understand doubting those because you were there, or cant commentor speculate. That's fine if you dont want to trust those, but this is all geometry and is foolproof. Plug the numbers for the globe model in and you'll find the geometry checks out.
Or even make it easier. If you access to any CAD software, even basic stuff you can sketch this out. Just draw a circle at the base point with the diameter of the sun, draw another circle with earth's diameter at the average distance from the sun. Then draw a 3rd circle in the middle going back towards the sun the average distance of the moon from earth at the diameter of the moon. You now have 3 circles drawn. Now make a tangent line from the sun to the edge of the moon and extend it past to earth. Thats the hardest part tbh. Once you have the tangent lines drawn you get the same diagram the guy was ranting about being wrong, but it's so hard to see entirely because of the scale. That's why they make diagrams like this, so its visible and useful to people and not hard to see.
Only three minutes in and Thrive and Survive never disappoints, well maybe he disappoints his parents, but otherwise he makes great comedy.

@@flookd5516 Galileo encountered similar problems when observing the Jovian system. Fellow astronomers either fused to look through the telescope, or those who did claimed they could not see Jupiter's moons revolving around Jupiter. (though I assume at least some of them said so out of fear of the repercussions from the church/Inquisition)

You ever see a baseball game? When the ball is dropping from the sky you know it gets closer because you see the shadow on the ground slowly grow.
You ever watch anything fall from the sky, like, idk, a skydiver? Their shadow isn't human sized until they reach the ground.
What about an Airplane shadow? Seems awfully small as it flies overhead.

Why does the Sun appear to be lower when it's nearing sunset? They will say "well of course its perspective and refraction and stuff, you can't trust your eyes." But then , in the same breath "come on guys does the Earth look curved? it looks flat, TRUST YOUR EYES".
It's easy to come up with independent reasons to prove different parts of a hypothesis as long as they don't need to be consistent with each other....
@@mrkiky It's called horizon because it comes from ancient Greek. Horízō, “I mark out a boundary” and kúklos, “circle, sphere”. So translate it as "separating circle". Sea level is only called sea LEVEL in English. In Dutch it's called zee NIVEAU, where niveau replaces the word level. That word has nothing to do with flat. We use other words for that ( vlak, plat ) and there is no relation whatsoever between the word "niveau" and the word "plat". Another word for sea level in dutch is "zeespiegel", where "spiegel" means "mirror". I we use your logic that would mean the earth is a giant mirror, but only if you speak dutch.
@@eugenezandberg8057 Well to be fair, it works the same in other languages. For example French and Dutch also have "niveau". In my language (Romanian) we have "nivel" which also has common roots (possibly even with "level" from old french "livel" or "nivel"). And it can be used the same as English "leveled" ("nivelat") which means flattened or just brought up to level. However, the word level is used in relation to flat things most of the time because local applications don't really take curvature into account since it's negligible. And if we're talking on a larger scale, the word "level" can be adapted to a sphere. It simply means how far away something is from the surface of the sphere along its radius. A LEVEL can be curved, it just isn't in most day to day applications.
@@mrkiky I was only pointing out that you see this kind of argument a lot when it comes to flat earth. In English we say this and that, therefor reality is like this and that. They seem to forget that there are more then 7000 spoken languages today. So if i was to follow that logic the earth WOULD be a giant mirror. He really just doesn't understand that the distance he moves the ball is pretty insignificant, but that the shadow IS in fact smaller, just not enough to notice with the naked eye.
That's the problem with all of these people. Their minds can't comprehend vast sizes and distances. To them just a few miles (or kilometers) is an absolutely huge distance. The earth being 24000 miles around, the moon being 300000 miles away, the sun being 93million miles away are all numbers that are so big they don't mean anything to these guys. They simply can't understand it. The first step to figuring out the universe and how it works is realizing how truly small we are, and how human perceived sizes/distances are insignificant in measuring astronomical events.
They alo can't think in 3D or comprehend what up and down is.

1. I don't understand so it is not true, unless it means the earth is flat. Then it does not matter if I understand or not.

Mr Thrive and Survive is typical of so many who hold the same beliefs as him. He does not understand the science so he does an experiment which if done correctly would disprove what he is saying. He doesn't bother to do it correctly because he doesn't understand the physics or geometry involved but just becomes abusive about everybody who does not agree with him.
A brilliant almost perfect example of the Dunning Kruger effect.
Funny enough, his experiment comes pretty close to "done correctly", but he fails to admit his failure of understanding :D

After the sun drops below the horizon (obviously it's just travelling away 😉) as the sunlight hits the underside of the clouds, ask him how the rays of light can illuminate them? Does the sun magically pop down just for a brief moment before dusk?
Unfortunately your mistake is to try to explain things to him, to reason with him. Showing him evidence will do no good either. Sad to say but he is believing things which are not reasonable, he believes things which have no supporting evidence and he believes them in spite of the evidence. You cannot reason with somebody who is unreasonable.

A simple traced line around the ball is all it took. 😂
@@ColdFear22 Well a simple traced line AND going 6 or 8 meters away and up a high ladder to get the correct angle and a more significant distance.
If you compare it to the scales and distances for moon and Earth, the ball would have to be about 30-40 meters over the ground (not sure how big it is, 25 cm gives roughly 33 meters, 30 cm would produce 40 meters as it's almost fitting the 3000 km moon diameter compared to 400,000 km distance between moon and earth...) to produce an eclipse relative in size to the ones observed on earth... and it would also produce a proportional penumbra...

Another example of a flat earther declaring the results of an experiment without actually DOING it.
I noticed two things about Lafleur's demonstration:
1 He didn't ramble on and on, he just did the demonstration and left the results speak for themselves.
2 He actually took the trouble to mount that camera.
Another example of flat-earthers approach to basically everything : they insult and attack personally rather than try to "science" the problem out, all while denying basic physics principles and observable FACTS. The ball shadow example was exilarating...

all he had to do was lift the ball further away from the bench where the shadow was cast.
Just as the man in the debunking video moved the ball further away,
to create the smaller shadow.

To sum it up. Thrive and survive says its crap, therefore the earth is proven to be flat. If you don't believe me, just Ask Mr Thrive and Survive. If he doesn't understand it, it can't be true.
If that was true, we'd have a very fragile reality consisting of very, very few things.
We have Thrive and Survive UA-cam Videos for how to play Minecraft, which can be very informative. Thrive and Survive guy here is just trying to make himself look smart by calling everyone else stupid. If they only knew.

Words will not snap him back to reason. Psychological, verbal and physical abuse will. His ego will be pulverised into useless dust before you shape him back into a functional member of society. You just have to use some harsh methods sometimes.

I love your channel! Honestly I tried desperately to become a “Flat Earther”, however no matter how hard I tried to prove the flat earth to myself; I could not. It’s amazing to me how quickly some forget the most simple laws of physics. For example, I have noticed that flat earthers confuse UP and DOWN to be the same as NORTH and SOUTH! Lol. And flat earthers don’t understand that although the earth is spinning very fast; it is only making one revolution per day! Watching them spin a tennis ball soaked with water is entertaining! Now take that same tennis ball and spin it at one revolution per day!!! Lol. I love how flat earthers tell everyone to trust their sense, like their senses cannot be fooled... lol. Magicians have made a career of fooling people’s senses. Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the great work!
I like to explain that the Earth is rotating at 1/1440 rotations per minute, or 1/2 the speed of the hour hand on an analog clock.

The USAF Thunderbirds are performing an airshow in my town tomorrow. While practicing today they flew over my building, I live on the fourth floor the building next door is 2 story with a flat roof, I noticed the shadows of the f-16s on the roof next door were about 2 to 3 feet in length. A good demolition of the "size of the moon shadow" argument.
Obviously the Air Force is using miniature planes to fool you into thinking that they have full size jets on display!! Otherwise, how could you explain the tiny shadows? Don't be a sheep!! /s

1. The total area of the shadow is constant.
2. Increasing the hight wrt the ground makes the edge blurry.
How can he not extrapolate from his own observation? If his ball would be further and further away from the ground, the total shadow might remain the same area, but the blurry edge would increase (exactly as the example videa you showed), leaving in a dark smaller part.
he clearly doesn't understand just what it is he's looking at...that blur...is LITERALLY the Penumbra....
And he still thinks light comes off the sun like it's a bundle of laser pointers and only leaves a point on the sun in a perpendicular direction, not all directions. Yet he doesn't question exactly *why* he can see those points that he thinks are "pointing" in other directions.
it gets a little weird when you look at it in the light of Dr Feynman's work on the nature of light. The "blurriness" is partially due to quantum "refraction"...the quanta packets "curving" past the surface of the object.... It does happens at MUCH smaller scales as well, and is the ultimate size limiter in photo-resistive etching process of computer chips...

They also have a huge issue understanding scale & distances.
It goes well beyond that, imho. The problem is that flat earthers are narcissistic personalities that have failed at everything they tried to achieve in their lives. They know deep down they're special and everyone else are just losers, yet the fact is their best effort wasn't enough for them to achieve their goals. How does the narcissist accept that he is not special? That he might be just another loser in what he perceives as a herd of losers? Well, he doesn't. Taking in reality is more pain than he can take. The defeated narcissist is in such a wretched psychological state that he lacks the mental fortitude to take another loss, yet more than ever he needs a win that confirms his life-long held belief that he is special. That means he must continue to play the game knowing that losing is not an option... losing now is the extinction of his 'specialness', literal ego death, actual death for a narcissist. Thus, he will double down, triple down, and so forth on his delusions and distort reality until it fits into his perception that he is the uncontested winner. He will actively deny and project his own failures and other people's successes instead until there's no more cognitive dissonance. Now, these people do not appear in a void. These people are just a symptom of a societal sickness. We as a society need to stop telling everybody from cradle till coffin that they're special because some will believe it and no good can come of it...
