April it is so cool to watch you mature as you discover new skills you didnt think possible. Your project came out perfectly and you have every reason to be proud of your work
Absolutely fabulous April. I love how you are so transparent. You don't put on heirs when you are new to something. Your honest unassuming, curiosity on learning new things is so refreshing. I'm new to wood working as well and I totally envy the space that you have. Mine is so limited. I struggle to have enough room to cut a 4x8 piece of sheet goods without something getting in the way. I'm in the process of building a portable cabinet for a dishwasher and its my first cabinet. So far so good. I'm intimidated as well but have so enjoyed woodworking on a small scale for years. Thanks so much for your videos. Keep them coming. You give those of us with limited tools a goal to shoot for and make it seem actually possible. You rock !!
Lol, April, you don't strike me as one to shrink from a bug, dead or alive. I love your videos. I started getting into guitar maintenance a few years ago on my own, then in to building, and now after having watched dozens of your videos I'm tackling one woodworking project after another.
Great job April Like I said before, your is just like a pro. You do great woodworking. I have done woodworking for over 30 years and you are putting out great work. Keep it going and Take Care
You have made these videos look super easy, thank you so much for sharing the whole process. I am sure your parents must have been happy with their double vanity!
Congrats to you for taking on something that large and intimidating. Not only did you do fine on building it but your eye for design is apparent in the closing shots where the proportions look just right. That is often the hardest part and sometimes doesn't show up until it's too late to change. Good work!
Beautiful build, looks fantastic. I am particularly impressed with the way you designed as you progressed, taking on the project without plans, and didn't let fear of mistakes stop you. Congratulations on one mighty fine piece of furniture.
Looks great. One thing that you might have done a little differently is on the left side of the cabinet that will be mounted up against the wall you could have recessed the side panel 3/4" and let the face frame run past. When you go to install the cabinet you will probably find that the wall isn't straight and a little material to scribe for a perfect fit can go along way.
Martin Glennon Agreed. I always leave an extra 3/4"-1" overhang on face frames as a "scribe strip" to fit to the wall at installation. Also, the corner that the counter will be abutting is very rarely square. Since this top will be fitting into a left side corner, looking down on the top, I would have added a 1/2" thick x 1 1/2" strip of wood, the thickness of the top to the top before laminating it. On this top the blocks would be added to the lower left corner and the upper right corner. Doing this allows those corners to fit tightly to the wall and the void from them to the inside corner of the wall will allow for the wall being out of square. Then instead of attaching the back splashes to the top, you leave them loose and glue them to the wall with construction adhesive. The 3/4" thick back splashes will cover the gap left between the wall and the counter.
Fabulous looking vanity April!!! And now that you have built one, another one wouldn't be as hard. And Scott Price, if we only stuck to what we know, we would never learn anything. Think about what you are saying. Congrats April, looking forward to seeing the install video.
Hey April. Maybe you have already posted this somewhere but how much wood did you us to build this? I am looking to build 2 of these for a house I am remodeling! Thank you for the AWESOME videos and I look forward to your videos every week! Oh and my 8 year old daughter thinks you are just the best and you have inspired her to build with me!
I like that the community surrounding all these videos seem really supportive and the comments/replys are productive. Pleasant change from other comment sections.
I bet when you treat someone that gets their health back. That reward with be with you the rest of your life. As now they can go out and build that stuff.
To say that you were intimidated by this project you made the best job that you could have done. To me it looks "Shop Bought" which is the highest praise I can give you. Your parents did a great job choosing the contrasting laminate, stain colour and taps (faucets?) too. Well done April! N.
It’s nice to see your builds. I have been watching several others build kitchen and bath cabinetry. Everyone has their own styles and variety is the spice of life they say. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.
The pride was written all over your face at the end of this video, and rightfully so. You conquered your initial nervousness and apprehension and as a result, this project came out at least as good as any of your best ones. Thank you for sharing this. I'll never build anything this complex or beautiful, but the video showed me what you're made of, and it makes me wish more young women could be so creative and hard working. No one can fully appreciate the skill sets you have unless they've tried to design a project and then build it from scratch with wood. And to document it all with video just takes it to the next higher level. You should be proud that you did such a fine job on such an intimidating project, and I'm sure your parents are proud of you as well; not just for the time and effort this project took, but also because of the love you so obviously built into it. But mostly, they should be proud because of who and what you are, and that comes out in all your videos. Another very creative job well done, April!
That's beautiful April! Your parents will love it. The colors, trim, laminate, and feet look great together. I bet you will get asked to make more of those. :o)
You are a credit to your parents. I can only imagine their faces when they see this for the first time 😃😃😃. Each project you have grown and flourished like a bird spreading its wings. Congrats...Cheers Aussie Sean
This. Is. AWESOME! Your step-by-step process and explanations makes it possible for me to take the plunge and try my hand at making my own vanity. Thank you!
I think it looks fantastic! You inspire people to tackle projects that they would ordinarily think were too complicated for them. I really like watching your channel. Thanks!
April Wilkerson Lol I was wondering the same thing. I'll have to try that sometime. Where did you learn that at? It's always really fun and interesting to hear about these tricks and where people learned them.
Can you explain salting wood glue? It sounds like one of those inside jokes you do on the new guy. I am an aircraft mechanic and we do that to new folks, sending them for prop wash or a sky hook. ;)
Wow! That turned out amazing. It looked pretty good all along, but once finished... Holy crap! Looks like it was made by a professional cabinet maker. Fantastic job! I hope the install goes smoothly.
Thanks so much for another inspirational build April. Been watching your videos since I got started woodworking 2 Christmases ago and I think I am finally confident enough to give something like this a try. Watching you do your first cabinet build helps a lot with working up the nerve, probably because you make it look so easy. I hope to tackle this project this coming valentines day, which is also my wedding anniversary, as a present for my wife. Thanks again! Best wishes to you and your family!
That is AWESOME April. My wife and I want to remodel our master bath and replace the double sink vanity. She wants me to build it but I have been hesitant. You just gave me the inspiration to tackle this project. Thanks.
You did an absolutely awesome job. You didn't rush yourself, you made your cuts on the draws and doors larger so you could trim to fit for that perfect professional look. I do a lot of construction and craftsman type of work and you did an excellent job.
Very well done young lady!! Every step you took was well thought out. You're a pro. I'm an old licensed carpenter. Millwork/cabinet making was part and parcel of my apprenticeship and trade.
Just found your site while looking for some barn doors to build. I'm impressed with all the projects you take on and how well they turn out. Your instructions are clear and the projects are within the average person's skill set. It's obvious that you enjoy what you do and inspires me to quit talking about it and get building those barn doors for my grandson's bedroom. Keep those videos coming.
Looks fantastic and your folks will treasure it, I'm sure, knowing that you made it entirely with them in mind. As for the 'intimidation' you spoke of? Well, making it didn't kill you, so not only did it teach you new stuff, it made you a stronger individual and you won't be so worried about trying more new things in future. I only wish I had the talent to make something similar. Good job, April.
It looks great. I was anxious to see the finished product. I read your parents live 8 hrs away, you know you're a Texan when you measure distance with hours. Keep up the awesome work.
You really did an excellent job, April. I know guys who have been woodworkers for 25 to 30 years who can't do what you've done. I don't know if your parents have seen it yet, but when they do, they're going to love it. Now that you've gotten your feet wet in the cabinetry pool, what's next? You started with some of the most challenging features in cabinetry and pulled them off nicely. Just about anything you could do from here (short of a breakfront or bombe front) should be eezy-peezy.
WOW !!!! April, this was not a great job, it was SPECTACULAR !!!! You and your family, and friends should be very proud. Keep doing this sort of thing. You will become an expert, because I think you're getting there very fast. All the best, in all of your endeavors, Cliff
April Wilkerson the finished product looks similar to high end vanity's at home goods stores. Great job! Especially for this being your first! I couldn't have done it better myself.
Awesome job, April! You never cease to amaze your fans with your ability and talent. Your parents are really going to love it and be proud of their "little girl!"
You do such nice work, and this piece turned out beautifully. I was so relieved you stained the wood, rather than painted it. But for such a quality piece to have a laminate counter top....seems sacrilegious!
This is a seriously good looking vanity. I can see a lot of care and effort has gone on with the detailing, unlike my own version. But, mine is specific to my own taste and style. It does the job perfectly well. But, big respect to you as I know how hard it is and time consuming as well as that satisfaction: I built it!
Thanks for sharing this vanity build. It's given me lots of food for thought for the vanity I need to soon build for my bathroom. I had planned on buying a vanity top but you're shown me a way to make one how I really want it.
Great job. Looking forward to seeing future projects. It's great to build something and then stand back and be proud of what you've done. It's great to see women getting into woodworking. I used to be a lead custodian at a local high school and was really surprised to see that there was more girls in the wood shop classes than boys. Some of them entered their projects in to the local fair and won ribbons for their efforts. keep up the good work.
April, That is absolutely beautiful. You should be very proud of yourself. For a first major project of it's type, it is a pro quality job. A tip on caulking the countertop joints: put two strips of masking tape down parallel to the joint and about 1/8 to 3/16 out from the corner. Rub it down real good and then apply your caulk in a nice small bead. Using a wet fingertip spread the caulk to a nice smooth finish that stop just over the edge of the tape. Once you have the caulked joint looking the way you want, carefully remove the tape. Wahlah, no unwanted caulk on the countertop. I learned this trick from a contractor buddy of mine that helped me refurb my kitchen. Hope that was clear for you, sometimes I can be clear as mud when explaining something. Again GREAT JOB!!
April, you do amazing work, your craftsmanship is top notch. When I was young I loved working with wood. I wanted to be a cabinetmaker, then I found out, unless you were born into the craft, forget it. An a apprenticeship not happening. I wanted to learn the craft, we don’t always get what we want. Everything you do is top notch craftsmanship! Love watching your videos, keep this old man happy, will be 76 next Bday! Btw, plus your pretty dang cute!!!
Yes, they love their vanity and still use it daily and have always been proud of whatever I've done. I've had an excellent support system my whole life with them and am very blessed. Thanks for watching.
Hi April, Great job on the vanity...You can cut the laminate on the table saw, this makes it a lot easier, just need to use a thin piece of ply on the table saw deck so the laminate doesn't crawl under the fence... Thanks for the videos and good luck on your new adventure.
Wow that turned out great April! I appreciate that you did not put drawer pulls on the panels that aren't actually drawers. Yay for avoiding unnecessary confusion.
Great job April - love that other women in the world like to do these kind of projects - you've given me some good ideas for projects i'm working on. Murphy bed, Barn door are in design stage. You've inspired to make a video of the next one :-) THANK YOU!
I love the build. The color of the stain is beautiful. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see the install and the reaction of your parents. Have a blessed day!!!
Beautiful April, I love the look! Your parents are going to be very happy! I hope you show it after it is installed in its new home! Was fun watching this from start to finish makes me want to build a big fancy project!
Hi, April, The cabinet is beautiful, , and YOU DO NOT LOOK LIKE A PROFESSIONAL You truly are a professional.thanks for sharing your talent You are among the best thanks
Congratulations on a fine job. You never know just what you are capable of unless you try it . I believe that you'll do well in any project now. Thanks for sharing.
WoW ! fantastic job ! vanity looks awesome. having built many vanities and cabinets I can say you've done a great job ! its a joy to watch you solve any task's that present themselves. I see you have some new tooling in the shop. Your parents can be proud !
I've built hundreds, maybe thousands of countertops and never used plywood, always particle board. Glad you used the dowels to keep it from sticking until you had it positioned, you did your homework! I was a little nervous when you rolled out the top that you might push too hard where the cutouts were and crack the laminate, that can be bad if it cracks beyond the edge into the field where it would be exposed. One word of caution, with the backsplash attached it might not follow any unevenness in the walls. I've always cut a 4" backsplash a tad long and shipped them loose to be cut to fit and installed on site. With it attached to the top if the wall has any bows it (the backsplash) won't follow them. With them loose (and made of particle board) they bend just enough to follow the wall. "Glue" them in place with silicone and wedge some sticks to an opposing wall and/or the ceiling until it cures. Good luck with the install, can't wait for that video!
April, Fantastic project kiddo, one that you and your folks should be very proud of. A little tip for next time you are doing a double cut on the band saw. Make your first cut then tape the cut off back to your object then trace your pattern so that when you make your second cut you have a flat surface that is much more safe. Thank you for what you do. Mike
The vanity looks great. You did an excellent job. I just came across parts 1-3 for this tonight. I look forward to watching more videos in the future. You do a really good job making them.
Looks great what a nice job you did on it, almost 30 years ago I remodled my dad's kitchen we made molding from 1x3 fir strips with a few router bits a lot of sanding and some stain.
You have done a great job with the vanity unit April watched all the video's hope the fitting goes OK when you or who ever fits it. I'm sure your'e mother will like it. All the best Brian UK.
Looking forward to the install video. Everything looks great and you really do make it look easy. I'm so glad I came across this video cuz I'm about to take on the same project. 78" long double sink. My wife and I are both handicapped so were actually going to use kitchen size cabinet so we don't have to bend over as much.
I love how you kick most guys' ass (including mine) in terms of DIY skills, but you still get scared by a tiny dead bug. So cute :-) And congrats on this great looking piece of furniture!
I know this was 4 years ago, but I always put the clear silicone on the contact surface of the back splash, screw it on and clean all of the silicone that squeezed out off completely... seals it up with no exposed silicone! FYI, you did a beautiful job! You're very clever and skilled!
April it is so cool to watch you mature as you discover new skills you didnt think possible. Your project came out perfectly and you have every reason to be proud of your work

Heck of a nice job April - the big projects are rather rewarding and it looks very nice - and that is one cool shirt you got there in your outro
: ) haha, thanks Nick.
Congrats to you for taking on something that large and intimidating. Congratulations, April. That´s a classy and fancy cabinet. Thank you for sharing this great video.

Cheers, Gord
Because of you my wife and I built our own vanity for our remodel. You are an inspiration and a great instructor.
That turned out great! Your mom is going to love it! I bet you're happy to have it done. :)
great job ! i am a carpenter for over 30 yrs , you did an awesome job . and ur right no false handle ever goes on blank draws
Hey April. Maybe you have already posted this somewhere but how much wood did you us to build this? I am looking to build 2 of these for a house I am remodeling! This is great April! You did so awesome! Thanks for sharing with us.
just watched your 3 part build. nice job ! you are indeed a craftsman.I cant imagine what you've accomplished with another four years under your belt.
I'm going to school for neuroscience and I will never make my parents as proud as this
: ) Oh that's not true. I think we make our parents the most happy when we ourselves are the most happy.
Bingo!
that or when we are doing something that we love and doing it well.
I bet when you treat someone that gets their health back. That reward with be with you the rest of your life. As now they can go out and build that stuff.
Jesse how is the schooling going? After 3 years I think we need an update! 😉
To say that you were intimidated by this project you made the best job that you could have done. To me it looks "Shop Bought" which is the highest praise I can give you. Your parents did a great job choosing the contrasting laminate, stain colour and taps (faucets?) too. Well done April! N.
Great build. Do you remember when people doubted that you were doing your own builds.
In their face.
It's funny you bring that up, I was just thinking about that yesterday. You're right, in their face! : )
It’s nice to see your builds. I have been watching several others build kitchen and bath cabinetry. Everyone has their own styles and variety is the spice of life they say. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.
Its looks like a professional job. If I saw this in a store for $2500 would think its a deal.
The pride was written all over your face at the end of this video, and rightfully so. You conquered your initial nervousness and apprehension and as a result, this project came out at least as good as any of your best ones. Thank you for sharing this. Haha, and I will say no! : ) When I thought about building this I didn't think I would have a problem finishing it in a week....psh!
April is definitely a professional craftsman .and may I add , great work shop !
Wow that turned out great! As bugs, dead or alive... I hate them.
The vanity turned out great! Good solution for the doors.
Awesome APRIL! You make the Amish jealous!
Scott Smith The Amish that are watching UA-cam?
Scott Border haha indeed....
stewart price but if they DID... hahahaha
Great job, April! IT is so satisfying to take on something that seems intimidating - it's only by moving out of our 'comfort zone' that we grow!
What do you sprinkle on the glue when you glue up the feet?
John Assmundsson it was salt
Why?
Is it because the salt absorbs the moisture and reduces dry time?
John Assmundsson it keeps the parts from sliding around during clamping
Nick Ferry Also, wood glue without salt tastes awful!
(kidding... ha ha!)
Awesome Wood Things mmm...tastey wood glue....
You are a credit to your parents. I can only imagine their faces when they see this for the first time 😃😃😃. Each project you have grown and flourished like a bird spreading its wings. Congrats...Cheers Aussie Sean
I suggest to put a handle on the false drawers to get uniform to others
Nah, they throw off the eye since they wouldn't be in line with the other handles. Just a personal preference though.
you're right I never install handles on false DF
This. Is. AWESOME! Your step-by-step process and explanations makes it possible for me to take the plunge and try my hand at making my own vanity. Thank you!
Salt trick!
It works so well!
Andrew Klein Please explain? I wasn't sure what she was doing there. Does the Salt keep the wood from sliding around?
Yes, it keeps it from sliding and if you use just a little like she did it just dissolves and doesn't effect the strength.
I think it looks fantastic! You inspire people to tackle projects that they would ordinarily think were too complicated for them. I really like watching your channel. Thanks!
Did you salt the wood glue? haha
Haha yep. It keeps them from moving around.
I am an aircraft mechanic and we do that to new folks, sending them for prop wash or a sky hook. ;)
GodzillaB210 The salt gives the wood something to grip against. This keeps the glue surfaces from sliding around as you apply pressure from clamping.

the first time i saw it was when izzy swan did a tips and tricks video. It works SO good.
I think it's beautiful. Love the contrast with the dark and light and with the gold handles. Looks really good.
Wow! That turned out amazing. It looked pretty good all along, but once finished... Holy crap! Looks like it was made by a professional cabinet maker. Fantastic job! I hope the install goes smoothly.

I learned this trick from a contractor buddy of mine that helped me refurb my kitchen. Hope that was clear for you, sometimes I can be clear as mud when explaining something. Again GREAT JOB!!
Your videos are put together well. I like how you show and explain every step that you take to build a beautiful piece of furniture.
You did a excellent job . My shop teacher would be proud and im sure your parents were too.
Hey April , for a first try at cabinet making the result is not bad at all , neat job . Hope your folks enjoy it.
April fantastic job. Pat your self on your back and be proud of what you just accomplished.
Beautiful April, I love the look! Your parents are going to be very happy! I hope you show it after it is installed in its new home! Was fun watching this from start to finish makes me want to build a big fancy project!

Hi, April,
The cabinet is beautiful, , and YOU DO NOT LOOK LIKE A PROFESSIONAL
You truly are a professional.thanks for sharing your talent
You are among the best thanks
April,
Fantastic project kiddo, one that you and your folks should be very proud of.
Wow, that turned out really nice. I'm sure your mom is going to very happy with it & proud of your work.
Looks great what a nice job you did on it, almost 30 years ago I remodled my dad's kitchen we made molding from 1x3 fir strips with a few router bits a lot of sanding and some stain.
Great job! I'm sure your parents will be very happy with their new vanity! Keep the good videos coming!
Great job! The parent people must be pleased with your efforts. Cheers from Canada.
I love the trim around the drawers. Excellent look throughout.
Awesone job April! I'll have to show this to Charlie so he can build a vanity for our restroom!
You did a remarkable job. That was not an easy project. It turned out great! Thanks for sharing your hard work with us.
April the bath cabinet is a beautiful contemporary piece, very good job
Wow, April, it looks fantastic. You really did a great job, What an involved project! Well done.
I know this was 4 years ago, but I always put the clear silicone on the contact surface of the back splash, screw it on and clean all of the silicone that squeezed out off completely... seals it up with no exposed silicone! FYI, you did a beautiful job! You're very clever and skilled!
The vanity is beautiful, your parents are very lucky. Great job!!!!!
Looks great. An accomplishment like that is a great boost to your confidence for future projects.
April you did a beautiful job. Love the details you put into it.
