    More about What’s Pimpin’?, KQED’s new vodcast:
    Women rappers and activists Maddy Clifford (a.k.a. ‪@MaddyClifford‬), Coco Peila (‪@CocoPeila‬) and RyanNicole ‪@MzRyanNicole‬) - known together as Still I Rise - are taking back the mic. Across three episodes, the hosts facilitate candid discussions about misogynoir and the disproportionate rates of violence Black women face, and how systemic racism and wealth inequality breed desperate conditions where pimp culture thrives. They also get deep, drawing from their personal experiences of moving through an Oakland rap scene that at times espouses both misogynistic and revolutionary ideals.

    Also would love to hear from some folks who are actually “pimps” and “304’s” “sex workers” etc. I could only imagine with y’all bringing this level of mastery to the table it would be really great way to expand on the conversation.

    Maybe if we start calling “game” what it is , coercion and manipulation, ppl will be able to see that the emotional abuse in that. Pimps are opportunist (no matter the industry)

    DAMNZZZ. This might be my favorite one. I love the way everyone interrogated the topics. "Is there such a thing as a benevolent slave master? Or good cop." ~Coco Pelle (with the 3 points from downtown). I mean the gag. Also, Madlines, I caught that too... why when pimping is used to discuss any other structural inequity it's oppressive, but in its most literal and classical context it's GOOD? GTFOFH. This one had me rolling. And Dru Down's The Pimp of the Year had all of us wanting to pimp. (I was literally rapping this at 7 years old). Shots out to my internalized misogyny and misogynoir, am I right!? I definitely feel like I was groomed by Bay Area pimp culture through the music. I've had to fight tooth and nail to carve out a piece of Black queer feminist identity, like my life depended on it... and did.

    MY OLDEST BROTHER WAS A PIMP , I MEAN FOR REALZ.... IT ROLLED DOWN TO ALL OF US YOUNGER ONES, WHEN IT GOT TO ME I CHOSE TO DO SOME RESEARCH,,,I FOUND OUT THAT OUR FOREFATHERS IN ANCIENT AFRICAN TIMES HAD A SYSTEM CULTURE CALLED POLYGAMY,,,WHERE THE MAN COULD SUPPORT AND HAVE AS MANY WIVES AS HE COULD TRULY PROVIDE FOR....

    • @MaddyClifford
      @MaddyClifford 11 місяців тому +5

      African culture isn't a monolith. There's literally thousands of different customs and histories on the continent and to compare polygamy to pimping doesn't make sense because polygamy often requires that the MAN pays for all of his wives' housing, food, clothing and even sets aside savings for them. In fact, many women in polygamous relationships do not have jobs outside the home, but if they choose take on another job, they are able to keep their own income for themselves. There's no correlation.
