- In Chicago, Homer Hans Bryant experiments with a genre-bending style called “hiplet,” a mix of hip-hop and ballet. For his dancers, it gives an opportunity to escape the rigidity of classical ballet.

Isn't this what it's all about? you learn the art form and then you make it your own bringing in your cultural influences and personal creativity.
“It’s not cultural appropriation when we do it”
What an absolutely mockery of that beautiful European art Ballet.
Fantastic!!! I was trained in classical ballet for 16yrs. I remember one of my teachers saying to me, I had a “ballerina’s body” for a Black woman! I had ballet, legs and feet but I wasn’t tall (5’ 4”)! I had to dye my tights and pointe shoes to match my skin tone. I was a member of a dance company for a couple of years and received an offer to dance with the L.A. Ballet. This was back in the late 1980s and I had my 15min of fame!! I still take ballet classes here and there, I still love it!!!🩰🥰
The Italians created ballet to entertain the wealthy then other countries adopted the art form. Not many people were able to do it due to the intense level of performance and the height and body requirements. Then slowly they started to let other races in from Asian to African yet they had to look like their white counterparts as far as body type.
I like that they created this Hiplet style because it speaks to so many people from the hip hop world.
As a former ballet dancer this is half right.... While ballet IS actually Italian in origin, the height and body requirements came to exist during the early 1960s and primarily in the United States. China for instance adopted ballet quiet some time before this and it is taught in it most prestigious dance academies alongside traditional far eastern dance. Similarly ballet companies of great skill and reputation have existed in countries such as Iran (before the fall of its Shah) and Cuba since the 60s and 70s. Unfortunately the United States and Western Europe's obsession with the "Twiggy" look was adopted by nations such as Russia and France and Italian after the USA went gaga for it....and then (courtesy of Balanchine) the "tall skinny" look was transposed onto ballet. If you can get a hold of films from the Nijinksy era you will notice that female dancer are quiet petite and rather curvy, and Nijinsky himself looks more like a body builder than the elven looking guys we have now... so really I think dance is coming full circle. We are leaving a "fashion icon" mentality and being dancers again. Which the company definitely embraces!
@Purple Bookshelf I assume you are an authority with credits like Dance Theatre of Harlem or Royal Ballet to back you up? No? Good dancers, professional dancers, don't publicly dog other companies and performers!
Yep I remember being told as a kid I couldn't be a ballerina because I was too dark for the stage and that the shoes and tights wouldbe too distracting!!! Wtaffffff😭🤣🤣I'm so glad these ladies are pushing the boundaries
I absolutely love it!
Excellent interview. I saw them when their tour came to Baltimore. They set the stage on fire. The performance was awesome.
She forgot about Misty Copeland and Michaela Deprince when running the list of influential black dancers
They are but they aren't pioneers they are just good dancers.
Dance is so lovely and freeing to your soul.🩰🩰
Finally, thank you 😃
Mr Homer made prime time national news!
misty Copeland wrote a book called Black Ballerinas my journey to our legacy where she wrote about different black ballerinas, check that book out as well
beautiful ⚡✨🔥💯
Wonderful!!!
Love this 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love this. I think all dance's foundation is ballet. From there, you can do anything.
Thank you for sharing, the young ladies that has the big legs and pointed feet.
This is awesome. Everything is always evolving and music and dance is no different.
Freestyle has always been a fusion of street.tap, jazz, and ballet. House dance has some of the ballet elements as well. I guess this is a remix. I like it.
Keep going higher & higher! Fantastic! 😀
Ballet is pretty incredible and the joining of hip hop and ballet is genius!
When I was younger doing ballet about 15yrs ago I was one of two black dancers in the studio but I was only one en pointe. There were many times where I had to wear the pink tights with pink shoes because I thought that it was normal. I then started pancaking my shoes to match my skin tone because they didn't make shoes to match my skin tone and that was a job in itself. I started with old pairs first so I wouldn't ruin a new pair. When I first heard about hiplet I instantly fell in love with this style and the amazing dancers because they looked like me. I hate that dancers of color can't do something they love without people trying to tear them down but let it be a dancer that's not of color then it's totally ok. I'm almost 30 and I joined the ballet school in my hometown and it feels good to get back to dance.
i always wanted to do ballet ! i really wish my mom would of helped me with the things i was interested in.
You are never to late to dance . I myself dance at 57 still look in to being a class sometime soon.🩰🩰🩰
@@p.mckenzie2921 wow so encouraging thank you so much💖
@@beyonkam9965 your welcome have good day.😉🩰
I started at 47, I'm still dancing 5-6 days a week 2-4 hours a day at 52 ...and starting pointe soon. It's really never too late. All the best.
@@tammygant4216 Thank you for kindly encouraging us older ladies . . . Yes, time is short on this earth and fill it doing the things you love. Can't help but think how great dance is for positive mental health. 🤗
Yay Mr Homer!
so hiplet is what I've been doing in my room by myself with my point shoes…. ahhh.
@Purple Bookshelf I'm a trained dancer, been doing ballet since I was 3. I just loved more pop, hip hop music when practicing in my room growing up. So Naturally I eventually started mixing the two. I just never had a name for it until now. I am 100% in agree training is important, I am comfortable in my technique at least on pointe in general to be more explorative in how I move in them. It was a simple "ah ha that's what i do by myself between Tondu's when I'm training alone" comment, my bad for not being more specific about my training back ground. There are too many people playing with pointe shoes without the training I agree.
@@OliviaIsWeird97 People are so quick to assume! Continue to dance!!
Reminds me of jazz
I would love to see a Latin flavored ballet and they could call it Salsallet.
Perhaps you might find it at Ballet Hispanico in NYC. They have been around since 1970. Tina Ramirez founded Ballet Hispánico. There are videos of their work on YT. Absolutely beautiful!
@@sacredmysteriesworldwide5810 And I was waiting for this, too (actually for Zumballet), I'm too far away from NYC.
Actually, it's like going back from the classic world of Petipa and Cecchetti and back to the more sensual and folkloric as well exotic tradition of Romantic ballet...
More power to you and the company! When listing black dancer examples was Misty Copeland mentioned? She has a line of darker tights etc now-a-days too!
Hi CMDC & Hiplet! Congratulations!
So nice to see more than just the typically shown Hiplet strut. Frankly, the Jason DeRulo choreography is probably the ugliest aspect of Hiplet, which has so much more to offer.
The rigidity of Ballet is the whole point.
This is a great idea but not so great execution. Most of these girls don't really dance well even in hip hop let alone adding ballet to the mix. And, yes, ballet is 'eurocentric' and has standards (gasp!). So? Why can' t everything exist together, why does everything have to take down or over everything else?
Rap just makes the ballet look trashy
What a bunch of crap
💩🕺
what does this mean?
🤡
what
Shout out to George Floyd on 795 days of sobriety. It took some tough love but he did it. Say his name liberals!
uhh... what does that have to do with dance? lol
