      ILOVEGOD I love God, too, by the way.... But this is embarrassing and a good example of why we need to really reexamine what we understand to be culturally Black....versus just throwing something together, then calling it culture. AND please let's show more ingenuity and come up with a sensible name with actual origins, still some type of phonetic mashup. It is really embarrassing. Similar to names that don't have any African origin, that I'm supposed to be quote Black. It really and truly can make us look so silly. That's why so many of us are misunderstood and so many others can never get past their stupidity and thinking we're all one way, with limited ability not including inventing _that thought of course is a lie but stuff like this..... Come on I love us please come on we got to change some things. Quick. It's 2017 now

      Not hate, but Ballet and Hip Hop doesnt mix well. Some things cannot mix well. Like certain Chemicals. This is insult to Ballet as an Art. And it is an European Art. It's fine if they want to do Ballet, but not mixing with Hip Hop. It's an Abomination. Disgusting.

      Emperor, hip hop is art, too. Saying it is "disgusting" is absolutely hating, but you know that. You're disgusting for assuming one dance is art when another isn't. Are you racist or just narrow-minded?

    To everyone saying “this isn’t ballet it’s hiplet”: hiplet is a mix of ballet and hip hop. Meaning there should be elements of ballet besides the shoes and echapées.

    we looking at lots of explanatory exhibition here, what about a performance piece? They added to the traditional movements elements of "black" dance plus improvisation. Room to grow, develop and hone in. Dancer safety and longevity are concerns. Looks like they are working on it.

    This is amazingly beautiful. I totally support Mr. Bryant's vision for these and other beautiful dancers of color and others. Mr. Bryant, who is classically trained, for those trolling idiots, has open doors to black dancers that white companies have closed doors to. The Dance Theater of Harlem received the same kinds of negative comments that are posted here, and look at them now. Keep up the fantastic work, and I will support you and your efforts, monetary, to sponsor more children in your dance theater. When they go low, where mostly live, stay high.

    As a former professional dancer (of several forms/styles) I understand the politics, snobbery and resistance to change present in the Classical Arts. So I can understand the negative comments from Classical Ballet dancers. The racist and hateful sentiments just reveals the arrogance and ignorance of Western culture. They are savages and will always be so: ignore them they are a waste of energy. When Ballet was introduced in the mid-1600s it was *designed for and performed by the Aristocracy only* . The first of the peasant/merchant classes attempting to enroll in L'academie Dancé de Francais were ridiculed, spat on and ostracized from society. So there's a long history of being closed-minded in Ballet and if it were not for those brave and passionate people who wanted to dance regardless of their class or 'station' in society none of you who are bashing this Hiplet would have been able to. You are benefiting from those innovative and fearless people who came before you that changed the stiff, limited - and more dangerous - style of the original form to what we have today (Ballet will always be hard on the body regardless of the style). The gentleman who developed it is merely following in the footsteps of those passionate people who want to create a positive environment for those who are not welcome in traditional Ballet because they are 'Black'. I had to fight my way through. I was told, "You're too 'athletic'." "You don't have the proper body." and etc. That was in the late 1960s and 'Black' girls are still being shut out using the same excuses. You should be praising him - and those girls - for their passion and fortitude in the face of arrogant snobs like those commenting on this post. It's time to wake up and stop the ignorance.

  • @MasterSpatula
    @MasterSpatula 7 років тому +10

    "If it ain't love, why does it feel so good?" Using a song that trivializes love does not a great beginning make... especially if you are introducing a 'new' art form that you'd want people to take seriously.
    Nevertheless, this is hard to watch and vicerally injurous because ballet, in general, is graceful and beautiful, seemingly effortless. Yet this 'new' dance form appears rude, spasmodic and painfully grating. Maybe more time should be spent in developing choreography native to the new art that has some semblance of progression and structure, rather than a bunch of students angrily bouncing on their toes amid ubiquitous hip gyrations and twerk-esque plie's.
    Hip-Hop dance is not a distinct and structured dance style as much as it is a subjective form of urban dance expression. It requires no discipline to mastery, but only exaggerated body movements, keeping time with a hard-driving syncopated rhythm.
    Ballet on the other hand is rigid, structured, disciplined, beautiful, requiring a substantial amount of time to master. Mixing the two to create a 'new' dance form, while interesting in theory, is much, much harder to do in practice...

If it was not for the Dance Theater of Harlem, which, Homer Hans Bryant was a professional dancer with, along with dancing with Maria Tallchief's classical dance company, that door would still be closed to black dancers. So WTF are you whining about now. Jelousy that you and your sister are not capable.

      I agree. Ballet is unique in its own way and hip hop is unique in its own way. I don't like how this person is trying to make ballet "more appealing to the newer generation." If you can't appreciate ballet by itself, don't do it. Very simple. I took both hip hop and ballet and combining them is just a terrible idea
