I often go to Thailand where the levels of wealth and poverty are very similar to South Africa . Thai people are totally different to poorer South Africans , they are busy , striving and sometimes thriving . They are always smiling .
The Thai people didn't live under a racist regime which demoralized, dehumanized them, turned them to second class people and gave them poor education.
I came from very humble beginnings here in the US. Raised in a single parent household where my family relied heavily on government assistance just to survive. Although my situation was dire, I didn't look at the influx of the immigrants into my country/neighborhood and think they were the problem. Instead, I began to shift my focus on education. Because of this I was able to excel throughout school going on to become the first in my bloodline to graduate from college, and then the first in my family to obtain a masters degree and then doctorate. However, if I had focused on my lack and on how unfair it was that I was in this situation in the first place that would have done me no good. If I harbored hate in my heart towards those who sold my ancestors into slavery and therefore, separated me from identity, then I wouldn't have had the strength nor the resilience to rise above my situation. So to my fellow African brothers and sisters, please take heed to what this young lady is saying. You literally have the opportunity to change your situation just my changing your focus and shifting your mindset. We are rooting for you here in the US and believe that like our ancestors did, you too, we rise out of the ashes, and gain your rightful place in society. Much love from New Jersey
Dear Ashley, I'm a South African male, and I have lived in both countries, the USA and South Africa. I left South Africa to the USA in the 90s to study there. During that time the economy in South Africa was so bad due to the economic sanctions on the apartheid regime. Fast forward, the USA is a tough place especially if you're a black person...it is not easy. I really agree with you that you have been through a lot and most people don't know. I trillion times applaude your bravery to relocate to South Africa. Africa is your ancestry home, and we trillion times welcome you. Ashley, I absolutely love your videos. I’m a South African who has been living in the US for the past seven years after moving here for college to chase the “American Dream”. While I agree with you about the challenges African Americans face due to structural racism, capitalism, and the recent surge in inflation (I live in NYC, where many people must work multiple jobs to make ends meet), the struggles of Black South Africans are on a different scale. In South Africa, the unemployment rate exceeds 30%, and the wealth gap between white and black people is stark. Many graduates can’t even secure a job at McDonald’s. Despite my own struggles in NYC, I still send money back home to support my family, something my black American husband doesn’t have to worry about. Lecturing natives about having a “mentality of lack” when you already have so many privileges afforded to you by virtue of the American dollar/passport/halo effect comes off very white supremacist and isn’t very different from when white American tell POC Americans to “pull themselves up by the bootstraps”. I encourage you to listen to black South African natives without being dismissive, support black owned South African businesses and be mindful of the legacy of apartheid that continues to affect my people.
As a white South African, living in South Africa, I agree with you. African Americans should acknowledge the fact that a move to the African continent elevates them in a manner which is not possible for the vast majority of black South Africans.

I don't know exactly what that woman's comment said but I will say as a South African I do understand some people who feel some type of way about seeing people from other countries come in and live in luxury because their currency is stronger so its easier for them to invest than local businesses . Especially in places like Cape town where tourists and a lot of Europeans and Americans are relocating, they make life for the locals especially the poor difficult by raising the standard of living making the day to day life of the poor more difficult, making it impossible for local entrepreneurs to compete with investors with foreign currencies and further exacerbating the housing crisis in South Africa with millions of people already living in shacks having foreigners from other countries buying up properties and raising the property value making it more impossible for the especially poor black people to buy affordable housing. So I can understand why some South Africans feel this way because they feel that the lifestyle of some of these expats come at their expense.
This is actually true bcoz I have the hope of relocating from Jhb to the Cape but the property prices are rising enormously bcoz of such people. Thinking that I have to sell my 2 apartments in Jhb in order to buy one apartment in the Cape.

I am of African Caribbean ancestry living in the US. I think I understand fully where this South African that you have commented on is coming from. I am not sad regarding your joy or entrepreneurial achievements in SA as I am sad about your bourgeois and/or privileged analysis of current social political affairs. I will therefore not rely on your views regarding BRICS let’s say. I consume many SA platforms and would rather hear directly from South Africans themselves as to what’s going on in their country. I think you need to be careful with your words when describing your lifestyle in SA particularly as it relates to your “positive psychology” stance. I often react viscerally to your comment that “SA is luxury!” For whom is it luxury? Certainly not for the majority of SA’s. A South African living in Soweto can hear that comment of luxury as an insult! It may convey that they, perhaps, need to be blamed for not having the consciousness or positive perspective necessary to get out of their economic situation. Furthermore, while I do understand the concept of “we are and/or manifest our thoughts”, be careful not to oversimplify some real historical and social political factors. Are you saying the Kenyans who are now protesting the exploitation of Ruto’s administration are in the condition that they are in because they were in the wrong mindset? Are you saying that apartheid in SA existed there for so long and still today because the black South Africans were in the wrong mindset? Are you saying that white globalized financial capital exists because we are in the wrong mindset? If so, let’s dive in into these very complex issues without cheerleading the merits of positive psychology.
Well said, sometimes we have to meet people where they are because too often eventhough you may be speaking positive or truth those who you are speaking to may not and probably will have no "reference" to what your speaking about, so yes we need a certain level of empathy and we need to meet people where they are even to encourage and helping to uplift if thats the goal. But conversations and dialogue are always helpful.

I think receiving these types of messages will open you up more to the real South Africa and how we can meat each other as the diaspora. I don't think she meant to blame you for your success (saying this very hopefully since I did not see the message). Her expression is a window to the other side of the reality which may be on the blindspot. South Africa has not done well when it comes to prioritising investment towards its own people, thus their growth. This can be a very detailed disuccion if we were to assess the effects of global movements South Africa is involved in on the socio-economic conditions of the majority of its communities. South Africa's approach to globalisation against its history and current situations as well. The issue is very important, especially for a country with a history of detriment towards its own people and which has not been overcome this far and keeps on getting worse.
You put this reasonably in your write up... so gentrification is a global phenomenon and isn't necessarily a form of hatred or jealousy towards migrants... I just think government should rope in the competition commission & introduce legislation to regulate inflation so that merchants do not inflate prices due to foreign currencies or affluent people flocking in' such as digital nomads who are accused of causing prices to sky rocket especially in the Cape Town area... So in conclusion this isn't necessarily an anti-American or anti-foreigner sentiment per say... just a concern by struggling students and the middle class about the rapid increase in costs of living. So We just need a regulatory framework to keep inflation in check, and this shouldn't necessarily strain relations between Americans or migrants and South Africans... we do need quality foreign investors just like any other successful country afterall.

It starts with the children. The focus should be on preventing the children from developing a lack mindset, by doing so, this lack mindset will be drasticly reduced within the next 20 years. Prevention is much more powerful. FOCUS on the children!
your right because my daughter is 14 and i am trying to teach her about business, one of our failures as blacks is that we were not taught about money management and entrepreneurship in school so its hard for most of us as adults to comprehend it. at our age
We weren't taught about it in school as white school kids, either! Though of course I have my white privilege, but I come from a very poor (in white terms) background and it was my spouse who taught me about money management, living in a frugal manner, saving and investing. I was a child in the 80's, so I can't speak for other generations. It's wonderful that you are teaching this to your daughter and that you are helping to shape the trajectory of her future! ❤
"Mind Set Shift" is easier said than done. It ranks way up there with the pursuit of "enlightenment". These 2 remarkable state of beings are so rare that when someone claims to have achieved one of them, it tends to give rise to suspicion. I myself am in the pursuit of enlightenment, which to me is the ultimate shift. In my journey to enlightenment, I have gotten a taste of escaping the confines of a crippling state of mind. And as aforementioned, it's easier said than done.
This was a great conversation! I was born and raised in the U.S. and have been in Cape Town immersed in training with my Gobela to connect with and activate my ancestors, as a Sangoma since January. You are so on point! It was my courage & willingness to open myself up to my calling through a culture that I had never heard of before I got the calling, the unlimited possibilities that are truly here for us all. My process is healing my perceptions around what I had believed was holding me down. Also, my calling is showing me how to leverage Ancestral Intelligence (spiritual tech), Artificial Intelligence (computer tech) and my story in a way that is turning my entire life around. I have put myself on the wait list for the next cohort and if the timing is aligned when you open again, I will be there and if not, I'll keep watching and engaging here as I am able until the time is right. I literally started from 2k of salary and I moved out to my own one room and that's where my thoughts came alive I started a couch repair business met the love of my life who also had his small salary and after that we grew he got a permanent job now we moved in together into a cute house after traveling from our small hustle businesses coz his hustle was painting houses before the permanent job now we have both small hustles and good jobs with our first baby on the way.

For my I think confidence has is what I struggle with. Eight years ago, I moved to Asia for me freedom and travel and it didn't really workout for me. I think one of the things was once again confidence and introvertednedss. I was depressed which manifested into my phsycial health and when I came home I was so sick I had difficulty breathing. This vlog especially...because...the mentality of lack does not just exist in the black community but also the Coloured community. We were not taught that its okay to have and be okay with it. To not "worship" about tomorrow (I loved that line by the way). We, as a collective, we need a mind change/shift for us to heal so that we can prosper. So true. As South Africans we tend to be extremely negative. It's a disease. People complain daily and its almost a "sin" to do well or frowned upon with jealousy. We are so blessed as a nation. Examples of Investments are Employer 401K Retirement Matching Program (401K), Bank Certificate Of Deposit (CD), Credit Union Share Certificate (SC) and United States Government Treasury Bills, Notes and Bonds. HOH depend on the money earned from being employed at a business or Self Employment. A person need to maintain employment, save and invest which is the Traditional Approach to succeed in a Capitalist Society.
I agree with you sis 💯. I use to be like the everyday average worker, just going to work not really believing 100% that could live the life I was created for. But until I change my environment, the kind of people I associated with, the topics I got involved with, I was never going go anywhere. Truly it's all mental. Now, whenever I take an L, i figure out what I did wrong, after the emotional disappointment. And all this does is makes you smarter. I and my husband are both doctors and we moved to America from Ghana 25 years ago. Our income combined is over $800,000 / year . Many African Americans I meet are puzzled and resentful at how immigrants like us are able to achieve this level of success .We moved to America with $500 in our pockets and medical degrees , but because every medical professional has to retake their board exams to practice medicine in America we worked at minimum wage jobs for several years to support ourselves while paying for and taking the exams . You coming from America have many advantages over most of the locals and your presence is causing gentrification . Instead of being annoyed try to acknowledge and understand your privilege .At least in America opportunities are everywhere and yet African Americans are not doing well ! In Africa there are very few opportunities and most are reserved for the wealthy classes !

I both agree and disagree. I agree because I am in a similar position-well travelled, educated, a solid social and professional network. However, upon closer inspection: My faith in God (and the work He has done in my life), my supportive family, and a series of blessings that were out of my control assisted greatly in getting me where I am today. On a daily basis I see men and women, around my age, battling things that I have never come up against-Having to navigate life with a lot less guidance, less support, and less love. Moving to a country, city, or region where generational trauma (through violence, poverty, or systemic oppression) is rife and then lecturing people about their mindset of lack is a little bit... out of touch? I get where you're coming from and I agree that great things are possible for all, but the starting line and the setting makes a massive difference to how people grow and achieve.
Pushing that narrative keeps politicians on the job otherwise they wouldn't be stealing the money they should be using to improve people's lives instead of R350 to sustain dependency while deceiving blacks that they are victims of historical wrongs of the past......

Our IQs do differ. Most people who use social media are younger unlike in America. Apartheid did a lot of damage to the older generation in S.A. Few of us over 50yrs use social media. I have seen a young person unable to follow instruction on an ordinary ATM (cash despensing machine )but able to use face book and e.t.c on social media. I urge you to understand the dynamics of us in S.A. So the white supremacy did a lot of mental damage to us. So forgive the young lady. Lets say, it was her freedom of speech without she noticing the challenges we still have in our society. Me too come across many of them on social media and I do give them advice. For example YT people have their other classes in police jobs etc. Chinese and Indias build their stores in our neighborhoods. During that time the economy in South Africa was so bad due to the economic sanctions on the apartheid regime. Fast forward, the USA is a tough place especially if you're a black person...it is not easy. I really agree with you that you have been through a lot and most people don't know. I trillion times applaude your bravery to relocate to South Africa. Africa is your ancestry home, and we trillion times welcome you. Ashley, I absolutely love your videos. I’m a South African who has been living in the US for the past seven years after moving here for college to chase the “American Dream”.
While I agree with you about the challenges African Americans face due to structural racism, capitalism, and the recent surge in inflation (I live in NYC, where many people must work multiple jobs to make ends meet), the struggles of Black South Africans are on a different scale.
In South Africa, the unemployment rate exceeds 30%, and the wealth gap between white and black people is stark. Many graduates can’t even secure a job at McDonald’s. Despite my own struggles in NYC, I still send money back home to support my family, something my black American husband doesn’t have to worry about.
Lecturing natives about having a “mentality of lack” when you already have so many privileges afforded to you by virtue of the American dollar/passport/halo effect comes off very white supremacist and isn’t very different from when white American tell POC Americans to “pull themselves up by the bootstraps”. I encourage you to listen to black South African natives without being dismissive, support black owned South African businesses and be mindful of the legacy of apartheid that continues to affect my people.
As a white South African, living in South Africa, I agree with you. African Americans should acknowledge the fact that a move to the African continent elevates them in a manner which is not possible for the vast majority of black South Africans.

I don't know exactly what that woman's comment said but I will say as a South African I do understand some people who feel some type of way about seeing people from other countries come in and live in luxury because their currency is stronger so its easier for them to invest than local businesses . Especially in places like Cape town where tourists and a lot of Europeans and Americans are relocating, they make life for the locals especially the poor difficult by raising the standard of living making the day to day life of the poor more difficult, making it impossible for local entrepreneurs to compete with investors with foreign currencies and further exacerbating the housing crisis in South Africa with millions of people already living in shacks having foreigners from other countries buying up properties and raising the property value making it more impossible for the especially poor black people to buy affordable housing. So I can understand why some South Africans feel this way because they feel that the lifestyle of some of these expats come at their expense.
This is actually true bcoz I have the hope of relocating from Jhb to the Cape but the property prices are rising enormously bcoz of such people. Thinking that I have to sell my 2 apartments in Jhb in order to buy one apartment in the Cape.
If I come I open a business and make you a partner! Or Partners so you can rise along with us as one! No one left behind especially the natives!

I am of African Caribbean ancestry living in the US. I think I understand fully where this South African that you have commented on is coming from. I am not sad regarding your joy or entrepreneurial achievements in SA as I am sad about your bourgeois and/or privileged analysis of current social political affairs. I will therefore not rely on your views regarding BRICS let’s say. I consume many SA platforms and would rather hear directly from South Africans themselves as to what’s going on in their country.
I think you need to be careful with your words when describing your lifestyle in SA particularly as it relates to your “positive psychology” stance. I often react viscerally to your comment that “SA is luxury!” For whom is it luxury? Certainly not for the majority of SA’s. A South African living in Soweto can hear that comment of luxury as an insult! It may convey that they, perhaps, need to be blamed for not having the consciousness or positive perspective necessary to get out of their economic situation.
Furthermore, while I do understand the concept of “we are and/or manifest our thoughts”, be careful not to oversimplify some real historical and social political factors. Are you saying the Kenyans who are now protesting the exploitation of Ruto’s administration are in the condition that they are in because they were in the wrong mindset? Are you saying that apartheid in SA existed there for so long and still today because the black South Africans were in the wrong mindset? Are you saying that white globalized financial capital exists because we are in the wrong mindset? If so, let’s dive in into these very complex issues without cheerleading the merits of positive psychology.
Well said, sometimes we have to meet people where they are because too often eventhough you may be speaking positive or truth those who you are speaking to may not and probably will have no "reference" to what your speaking about, so yes we need a certain level of empathy and we need to meet people where they are even to encourage and helping to uplift if thats the goal. But conversations and dialogue are always helpful.

Hi Ashley, your other Sis from SA here. I understand your context and her context as well (the lady who sent you a message). I think receiving these types of messages will open you up more to the real South Africa and how we can meat each other as the diaspora. I don't think she meant to blame you for your success (saying this very hopefully since I did not see the message). Her expression is a window to the other side of the reality which may be on the blindspot. South Africa has not done well when it comes to prioritising investment towards its own people, thus their growth. This can be a very detailed disuccion if we were to assess the effects of global movements South Africa is involved in on the socio-economic conditions of the majority of its communities. South Africa's approach to globalisation against its history and current situations as well. The issue is very important, especially for a country with a history of detriment towards its own people and which has not been overcome this far and keeps on getting worse.
You put this reasonably in your write up... so gentrification is a global phenomenon and isn't necessarily a form of hatred or jealousy towards migrants... I just think government should rope in the competition commission & introduce legislation to regulate inflation so that merchants do not inflate prices due to foreign currencies or affluent people flocking in' such as digital nomads who are accused of causing prices to sky rocket especially in the Cape Town area...
So in conclusion this isn't necessarily an anti-American or anti-foreigner sentiment per say... just a concern by struggling students and the middle class about the rapid increase in costs of living. So We just need a regulatory framework to keep inflation in check, and this shouldn't necessarily strain relations between Americans or migrants and South Africans... we do need quality foreign investors just like any other successful country afterall.

your right because my daughter is 14 and i am trying to teach her about business, one of our failures as blacks is that we were not taught about money management and entrepreneurship in school so its hard for most of us as adults to comprehend it. at our age
We weren't taught about it in school as white school kids, either! Though of course I have my white privilege, but I come from a very poor (in white terms) background and it was my spouse who taught me about money management, living in a frugal manner, saving and investing. I was a child in the 80's, so I can't speak for other generations. It's wonderful that you are teaching this to your daughter and that you are helping to shape the trajectory of her future! ❤

"Mind Set Shift" is easier said than done. It ranks way up there with the pursuit of "enlightenment". These 2 remarkable state of beings are so rare that when someone claims to have achieved one of them, it tends to give rise to suspicion. I myself am in the pursuit of enlightenment, which to me is the ultimate shift. In my journey to enlightenment, I have gotten a taste of escaping the confines of a crippling state of mind. And as aforementioned, it's easier said than done.

I was born and raised in the U.S. and have been in Cape Town immersed in training with my Gobela to connect with and activate my ancestors, as a Sangoma since January.
You are so on point! It was my courage & willingness to open myself up to my calling through a culture that I had never heard of before I got the calling, the unlimited possibilities that are truly here for us all.
My process is healing my perceptions around what I had believed was holding me down.
Also, my calling is showing me how to leverage Ancestral Intelligence (spiritual tech), Artificial Intelligence (computer tech) and my story in a way that is turning my entire life around.
I have put myself on the wait list for the next cohort and if the timing is aligned when you open again, I will be there and if not, I'll keep watching and engaging here as I am able until the time is right.

I literally started from 2k of salary and I moved out to my own one room and that's where my thoughts came alive I started a couch repair business met the love of my life who also had his small salary and after that we grew he got a permanent job now we moved in together into a cute house after traveling from our small hustle businesses coz his hustle was painting houses before the permanent job now we have both small hustles and good jobs with our first baby on the way.

For my I think confidence has is what I struggle with. Eight years ago, I moved to Asia for me freedom and travel and it didn't really workout for me. I think one of the things was once again confidence and introvertednedss. I was depressed which manifested into my phsycial health and when I came home I was so sick I had difficulty breathing. In a Capitalist Society, businesses depends on the money that the Head Of Households (HOH) earn, save and invest. Examples of Investments are Employer 401K Retirement Matching Program (401K), Bank Certificate Of Deposit (CD), Credit Union Share Certificate (SC) and United States Government Treasury Bills, Notes and Bonds. HOH depend on the money earned from being employed at a business or Self Employment. A person need to maintain employment, save and invest which is the Traditional Approach to succeed in a Capitalist Society.
I agree with you sis 💯. I use to be like the everyday average worker, just going to work not really believing 100% that could live the life I was created for. But until I change my environment, the kind of people I associated with, the topics I got involved with, I was never going go anywhere. Truly it's all mental. I and my husband are both doctors and we moved to America from Ghana 25 years ago. Our income combined is over $800,000 / year . Many African Americans I meet are puzzled and resentful at how immigrants like us are able to achieve this level of success .We moved to America with $500 in our pockets and medical degrees , but because every medical professional has to retake their board exams to practice medicine in America we worked at minimum wage jobs for several years to support ourselves while paying for and taking the exams . You coming from America have many advantages over most of the locals and your presence is causing gentrification . Instead of being annoyed try to acknowledge and understand your privilege .At least in America opportunities are everywhere and yet African Americans are not doing well ! In Africa there are very few opportunities and most are reserved for the wealthy classes !

I both agree and disagree. I agree because I am in a similar position-well travelled, educated, a solid social and professional network. However, upon closer inspection: My faith in God (and the work He has done in my life), my supportive family, and a series of blessings that were out of my control assisted greatly in getting me where I am today.
On a daily basis I see men and women, around my age, battling things that I have never come up against-Having to navigate life with a lot less guidance, less support, and less love. Moving to a country, city, or region where generational trauma (through violence, poverty, or systemic oppression) is rife and then lecturing people about their mindset of lack is a little bit... out of touch? I get where you're coming from and I agree that great things are possible for all, but the starting line and the setting makes a massive difference to how people grow and achieve.
Talk to South African, and truly understand how we feel. We don’t come a place of lack

Our IQs do differ. Most people who use social media are younger unlike in America. Apartheid did a lot of damage to the older generation in S.A. Few of us over 50yrs use social media.
I have seen a young person unable to follow instruction on an ordinary ATM (cash despensing machine )but able to use face book and e.t.c on social media.
I urge you to understand the dynamics of us in S.A. So the white supremacy did a lot of mental damage to us. So forgive the young lady. Lets say, it was her freedom of speech without she noticing the challenges we still have in our society.

Our minds were attacked and constantly under attack. Those who understood the mission knew the mental was what should be grabbed first. Many of us will be able to over come and many of us wont over come. We are still humans and must remember this. Where we go wrong is not accept the reality of Ying/Yang and dismiss the other parts of our community. When should understand all parts of our community is valuable and build as such. For example YT people have their other classes in police jobs etc. Chinese and Indias build their stores in our neighborhoods. We have got to understand everyone wont get there and that is okay but we should build for our communities everywhere.
Did not God ordain the family? What role does division between men and women away from husband, wife and children, as families, play in our demise?

It’s DEFINITELY a #MINDSET! I’m very analytical and I wanted to understand my own situation in how my circumstances were different from my siblings of whom, we ALL were raised by the same mother…the difference was mindset…the reason why WE as a diaspora lack is because of MINDSET…”OTHERS” even when they have the deck stacked for them(meaning their mindsets of collective achievements have been taught unilaterally throughout)they are equipped and molded to succeed..they are regularly reminded of their “inherent abilities”..THUS WE MUST SHINE THE LIGHT on OUR inherent greatness! MOST still don’t realize that the WEALTHIEST HUMAN known to man was a BLACK AFRICAN! Imagine the possibilities if we were aware of our ASTOUNDING accomplishments imprinted upon US starting when we are babes…IMAGINE THAT TYPE OF MINDSET…THE POSSIBILITIES WOULD BE ENDLESS!!
