    I swear this cabinet is easily the most common arcade cabinet that's ever existed. It's everywhere.

    That cabinet actually doesnt use emulation,it uses a Z180,which is a more powerful version of the Z80,which is the CPU used in the original Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga PCBs.

    • @acidpurewarrior
      @acidpurewarrior 7 років тому

      LBPPlayer7 actually it is because the z180 needs to emulate a z80

    • @RWL2012
      @RWL2012 4 роки тому +2

      @@acidpurewarrior no it doesn't so no it isn't, it's fully compatible! the Namco Reunion cabs use an 18 MHz Z180 vs the original Pac-Man hardware with a 3 MHz Z80. The Reunion cabs even use the same sound format (WSG). Not sure on graphics hardware differences.

    • @mrburns366
      @mrburns366 3 роки тому +2

      there's no reason to use emulation if the cpu is running the code natively, which it is. it would be stupid not to. lol

    • @TorutheRedFox
      @TorutheRedFox 3 роки тому

      @@mrburns366 well you'd need emulation for other hardware if it's not physically present

      @@TorutheRedFox right, and I know purists only want 100% original hardware but if the main gameplay loops is running natively that's close enough for me. My biggest gripe would be that they added continues! That's heresy! lol

    It's all original/authentic programming/code from Namco put onto the PCB... call it what you want, it plays 100% original, and that's why it's so good (unlike the 60-1 crap).

    The reason why the continue mode option is available is because the owner may need more money.
    Also, this option can be turned off by going to settings, hitting “General,” and then hitting “Continue” mode from 1 credit to “Disabled” mode.

    I don't mind games having continues if it's implemented right. There's a few ways of doing it right:
    1. Put a note beside the high score indicating how many continues were used to achieve it.
    2. Limit the amount of continues to 1 (like with Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out)
    3. Have unlimited continues, but reset the score to zero on each continue.

    Fun fact: You can actually crash the game on the Galaga demo. The first time he gets captured, you can fire and if you destroy it, you get control for the rest of the demo. And if you get captured again, the game crashes and goes back to the ms. pac man demo.

    Pacman 20 years Reunion and 25th Anniversary cabinets are not emulation at all as they are based on the 8 bit original code (slightly modified to handle the selection menu and the various gamespeeds) running on a Zilog Z180 which is an 8 bit processor 100% backward compatible with the old Z80 (actually 3 of them in Galaga) simply able to run at a quicker speed if requested. The logic of the original boards is embedded into 2 FPGAs placed on the PCB (1 for Pacman and 1 for Galaga) and protected with heatsinks. The only Namco Pacman cabinet to use emulation so far is the most recent "Arcade Party" which uses a Playstation 2 hardware running an emulator allowing to play 12 Namco Classics (64 bits processor running 8 bits code, that definetely requires software emulation :=) )

    Hey John, I'm not sure if you know about this, but there's actually a weird bug in these cabinets. During the Galaga attract sequence, when the alien tractor beam grabs the player ship, you can press the fire button and actually kill it, at which point you'll be able to take control of the attract sequence and "play" it for a small amount of time before the game crashes and restarts.

    • @Moondream417

      nsongster that glitch works on original Galaga too. Halfway through the attract sequence you will be able to take control of the ship

    You can also take over the Galaga game in the attract mode as well, depending on what you do, it will move on to the next part of attract, or it will restart the game. You have to wait until just before the Queen turns on it's tractor beam, and then you can start shooting. Do not get caught in the tractor beam.

    This was always one of the most aesthetically appealing arcade cabinets to look at to me while I would love to own an authentic orginal Pac-Man or Ms Pac-Man arcade cabinet I feel like owning one of these reunion cabinets that contains Ms Pac-Man Galaga and Pac-Man as a secret hidden game is pretty interesting and would probably cost less then trying to own an authentic arcade cabinet of either Pac-Man or Ms Pac-Man but I love how the cabinet has the original side artwork for both games and then near the coin door there's screen shots of both games and even the control panel and the marquee are shared between the two game's witch overall adds to the very appealing design of this particular cabinet eventually though they did make a version thar included regular Pac-Man on it along with galaga and Ms Pac-Man I also love how this was relased in 2001 I'd imagine that these are still pretty common to find with that being addressed I didn't realize that this actually allowed for continues that amazes me how this cabinet allows you to continue where you left off on should you desire to do so in the first place I wonder how much these cabinets cost now I'd imagine that the price for this cabinet probably skyrocketed
    Or maybe not but I wont know until I find out how much in terms of money and value that these cabinets go for

    Nice video as always John. I play this at my local Dave and Buster's and it's great. The player can also change the Pacman, Ms Pacman, and Galaga speeds as well before starting even if the cabinet is operator set for normal speed. My friend does this all the time because he likes fast speed but D and B where I live has it set for slow speed. Very cool to see him hit the buttons to a certain sequence to change the speed. I also play the combo cabinet for Nintendo featuring Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. Try to do a review of that if you have one close by. Would love to see that. The biggest mistakes Namco did for this 20th anniversary cabinet:
    1. It lacks other 1981Namco games like Bosconian and New Rally-X.
    2. It lacks dip switch settings.

    They had one of those machines at the only arcade left in town. It was the only classic video game machine in the entire place, since the rest is either overpriced 90s racing games, and then of course ticket and claw machines. But then after a few months, the screen went green, they left it broken like that for months, then got rid of it. So now the arcade is a sad, sad place again.

    You can turn off continue. And even if it's set on speedy, you can input the code to change it to slow, or vice versa if it's on slow then it will be come speedy. The 25th anniversary has the option to select Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, or Galaga, no input code required on it. The 30th anniversary is called 'Pac-Man's Arcade Party' and it only includes Ms. Pac-Man if you buy the home version.
    The problem I have is that I prefer the 'speedy versions and the emulation lags and can cause some missed turns at times so I picked up an original with a speedy chip. Can't go wrong with the large PCB's :)

    John, you shouldn't have thrown the pacman game, you nearly had the high score there!. Yes, you really need to get a Galaga, I'd love to see you bring one of these back to life. Galaxians, Phoenix, and definitely a Galaxians hack called Swarm.

    Unlock Original Pac-Man: ↑ ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → ← on joystick
    Speedup Hack Unlock: ← → ← → ↑ ↑ ↑ on joystick, then press fire button
    Honestly, I don't find the continue modes "lame", it's actually good for practice at beating games to know how difficult it can gradually become as you progress, especially for newer players or those who just have difficulty playing. Yes, the continue mode can be turned off.

      The speed up code also lets you shoot faster if you start up Galaga after entering it

    hi dear, are you well? please help me, i´m building a on game replica machine (full cabinet graphics and one game only, more near as possible to the original, so i would like that the machine turn on directly to the game, is there a way using some front end to mame, or linux, raspberrypi, somethink like that?

    Not gonna lie, even with all the issues those things have (continues? really?!) I would not mind owning one of those! I agree that I'd prefer playing on an original Ms. Pac/Pac-Man/Galaga... but failing having any of those handy, I wouldn't say no to the 20th anniversary game.
    Fantastic video, though!

    Is the kill screen still at 256 with this version of secret pac-man? Or does it have more memory being newer? Or less memory because it has 3 games??

    • @richardmarsh2317

      The Wormhole - there is still the split kill screen on the "Class of '81". I only did it once, on a sped-up game, using continues, but the kill screen is there.
