Thanks for making this video. Galaga is a really fun game. Dare I say, my favorite cabinet game of all time? Certainly one of the best. I believe what really sets this game aside, is getting your ship captured, then getting it back to give the player a double shot. I thought that was so cool when I was a kid, and I still feel the same today. Great episode!
It's 255 stages then stage zero which is also known as the screen of death. You can't play this game for 24 hours straight due to the 8 bit capacity of the programming. Also, the glitch you speak of, you allow the last wave of bees to roost on the screen. The first bee on the left upper corner is the one you let fly around for about 25 minutes, not 40. I'm an OG gamer myself. Cheers
Dude said you can get more than a Million. Couldn't do that when it came out. But I turned it over 5 times. Did once, because people kept coming over to watch. People where amazed back in the day. That was a couple hours of playing too, if I remember. And even drinking beer. It was at the local bar where we played darts after all. But I could play that game for a week on a quarter easy. But I would have had to buy the game. And one or two new wrists. ... Ouw my back 🤗
This is one of my favorite games. We didn't always play for the high scores but we played to fight the Enterprises on the bonus stages. It really brought the Star Trek fans in. One trick I learned is that some of the ships will circle around at the bottom of the screen a little longer then the other ships in their pattern. That gives you time to blast all the ships that are at the top of the screen waiting to attack you later in the stage. Once you learn that rhythm then you can really control the ships in the formation from left to right on your screen.
i used to play this all the time at disneyland...until they took out the arcade games! sometimes i would play close to an hour on one quarter. i do hold the joy stick palm down. if i ever get the chance to play again i'll try the palm up method.
Great video about galaga. Love the Camera angles and commentary. I'm sure the player can play better but he's distracted cause he's playing and talking. Great player too and knowledgeable. Thumbs 👆 up.
Great playing and tips! Galaga is one of those games I didn't really care about back in the day, but over the years, it just grew on me. Now it's one of my faves. Have the A1Up version and play it often. Haven't cracked 150000 though yet, but hoping to after watching this... Thanks!
Technically there is a happy ending to Galaga if you have one last ship left and you crash into the last ship kamakazing after you it doesn’t do anything but of course there’s no fighter or alien ships left so you sacrificed yourself for your planet and there’s no more aliens
Playing that arcade game. I got to level 93 at level 81 they don't move as fast there slow at coming towards you as in the beginning. I just wanted to see how far I would get. Than the manager took the game out of the movie theater so I couldn't play anymore.
Some cabinets have the no-shoot exploit. When you are down to one blue, let him dive-bomb over and over until it makes three runs without shooting at you. For the rest of the game none of the enemies will shoot.
I have the Arcade 1Up game. I let the last blue enemy dive bomb me for 55 minutes, and it never stopped shooting at me. I finally gave up trying for it. I think they removed that feature on this game.
Actually an Easy Game. Just have to be a button basher. The only real skill is getting double ships. Let a boss ship capture your ship. When you know the game. Once it takes a spin to attack. One shot will get your ship back. After your two ships combine. You really just have a Center and Fire till someone else wants to play. Turned this game over 5 times just because people were watching. Took a couple hours if I remember. Then I just handed it over. And heard the game over not soon after that. I do remember my right wrist being a bit sore 😂 It was pretty cool mastering a game back then. Memories 🤗
Galaga is, of course, a child of Space Invaders. The original Space Invaders had two buttons (L/R) for directions, and one for firing. Later versions, and of course, Galaga, replaced the buttons with a joystick. One MAME, I came to enjoy using the two-button configuration for Space Invaders, and then later tried it for Galaga, too. Although it was one of my favorites in high school (class of 84), I was never an expert/competitor/etc. I'm curious what high score enthusiasts think of the two-button configuration for Galaga. Anyone?
my dad from africa came to the usa back in the sixty’s used to tell me about a game that he played and fell in love with galaga hes 80 no and still loves this game
2nd-to-last challenging stage, corners for those diagonals. Easiest one with a single or dual ships. Also, in addition to the bee cheat not being allowed for a WR, Rank D is used for the main WR's. This is Rank A or C, as they weren't firing when they came out on Stage 10. Stage 255, Stage 0, Stage 1. On Rank A or C, it kill-screens. The game actually ends. On B and D it continues. Feel free to check out Galaga Forum.
Yeah, total classic. Improved on Galaxian, not as crazy as Gaplus. A perfect game, and a requirement for any decent arcade. Many pizzas and sodas were consumed back in the day with this game around. I still think Phoenix and Gorf, who borrowed from this genre, are more fun, but Galaga will always be that one perfect game.
When the enemies are flying in in particular of you happen to kill the whole string the new string immediately starts coming down it’s a good idea to leave the last enemy to live so you can be in position for the next line… also give you an enemy to turn into bonus enemies On the “butterfly” levels it’s a good idea to start toward an edge so they shoot that way and dodge to the middle where the two lines meet once you get in a rhythm with it you just about have to leave enemies on purpose 👾
Yep, taking out half the screen is a big one for not getting sandwiched with bombs from both sides. If things get too heated at the start of a wave I back off shooting the diving aliens. If you shoot it, another takes it's place imideately shoving you further into the corners. I shoot the ones in formation instead while the other ones fly back into formation for a few moments giving you a short break. I also play the player 2 side for the extra digit for millions.
I learned to play Galaga in 1981. I have a tabletop version. But I just learned that it wasn't always pronounced the way the host is pronouncing it but evolved into that.
I played this game all the time and I love it. There was one interesting fun fact about this game. I have a 3-LP set called "The New CBS Audio-File Sound Effects Library - Vol. 2" which was on the Columbia Special Products label in 1982, and on one of the tracks, it says "Video Games", and when I was listening to it, there it was, an audio of a gameplay from "Galaga". I did not know that the sounds from "Galaga" was on a record. Did Namco sued Columbia/CBS Records over the gameplay audio used in "Galaga"? I don't know.
“The New CBS Audio-File Sound Effects Library - Vol. 2” is a sample cd, a compilation of sound effects that can be used by the owner for purposes such as making music or movie sounds. I’m guessing the Galaga sound was recorded live (microphone sitting near the cabinet as someone played) which would make the sound useful when trying to bring an arcade scene to life.
If you do not fire on the fifth wave until it takes it's place on level one, and leave the bottom two enemies on the left side of the screen alive until they're the last two enemies on screen, they'll start to dive constantly and fire on you. If you wait until they dive seven times at the least without shooting at you, and then shoot them down, all other enemies in the game will not fire on you. It's a difficult trick to pull off, because it takes time, patience, and attention to details.
I played this game so much as a kid... My top score when I was a kid was level 28.. when I got older I managed to beat that at level 32... Haven't got further yet
Fantastic video! Didn't know there were so many levels or that you could get so many points. One question: If you are alone with the last Galaga (which is now purple), will it ever offer the tractor beam on that level?
Definitely one of my favs. We all used to go to a local cafe in my town and the back room was full of these machines. Galaga was the standout... much better than Galaxians and Phoenix...
If the machine is at a setting where the aliens shoot at you prior to formation on stage 10, then there is no kill screen. Stage 255 is followed by a playable “Stage 0”, and then Stage 1 where the game gets easy again.
@@richardmarsh2317 See,.. that's what I remember. The machine where I played would just reset after a Million. And you start over. It was actually easy once you got good. And you would see how close you could get to a Million for the high score. BUT, you had to remember to include the points for your ship getting destroyed. AND, any remaining ships. Still. I could turn this over forever. Did 5 times once. But your wrist gets tired. And unless people are watching, it gets boring. UNTIL THE NEXT TIME YOU PLAY 🤗
I can play this game until my arm fails on a single quarter. It’s a left to right streaming pattern easily mastered and rarely allowing the armadas to even form a rank. My high scores are on games throughout the world. ASS
I did play it on MAME with cheats. When the hiscore gets 100.0000 y stops and the 1up score starts from zero. When the game gets to stage 255, it reboots and crashes.
Good Vid...but as u call them "butterflies" are actually "moths"..and the "boss Galaga are "mantis " and then they morfe from bees or moths you'll have as follows....Rays..Galaxians...scorpions...Sprites. FYI. Good video man...own a one up console and dumped thousands of quarters into any Galaga cabinet I came across....Its just THEE PERFECT game. Its timeless. SHOOT ON..DONT GET DEAD JACK.😅👍
I remember playing this game at a waterslide in the mid 80s. At some point after I reached a million points, the game crashed. I went to the owner and asked for a refund. He got mad at me stating how dare I ask for my quarter back, that he could have made a bunch of money versus my single quarter... Yikes!
You do know that there's a cheat at start of game can only be done on first stage..when done properly the ships never shoot back..only way you could die is getting hit by a ship..
I don't know if I'm being a jerk about this but what kind of galaga player calls themselves a professional and doesn't get a perfect 40 on the first challenge stage? I haven't missed a 1st challenge since like 1993. Lmao
In the "fast shot" edition, I've breezed through all 256 levels on a credit many times since 2.000. Mate, you don't earn free lives once you exceed 999,990. It's just a "survival of the fittest" mode hereafter.
See. I didn't know that about extra ships. I could turn this game over as many times as I wanted on 1 Ship. And really can't remember not either letting someone play the rest of my ships. Or just walk away after a couple hours. I was addicted 😂 Luckily I played it where we played darts. So I always had someone to break the spell. Most of the time 😏🍻

Stage 256 if you count the final bonus stage before stage 0. Also you can play up to 24 hours on Rank D. It never stops until you die. I’m an OG too.

I used to spend all afternoon in the arcades with just a dollar playing this and other games I became good at. Memories of my childhood.
Love watching this. Never played console growing up and just got an N64 because my gf really wanted one. loved this playback!
Nicely played. Watching you play is basically like watching myself play. I love Galaga and pizza! Awesome video, subscribed.
Loved seeing this and agree with the pizza house comment! I use to play this a lot at a local pizza shop and saw it in other pizza joints too!
A ported version was also available for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 by Bandai America Incorporated.

I remember a sequel game to this called Gaplus. And then there's Galaga '88 with its five endings.
I see that Tron cabinet in the background there.
999th like and you just got a new subscriber! Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing!
Great video thank you! I made one that shows how to make all the enemies stop firing throughout all of the game from level 2 on.

Great skill to talk and play like that. Thanks for the video.
I Have The Namco Playstation 1 Version of This Game
WHY DID THIS CHANNEL STOP POSTING VIDS??????
Galaga and defender my jam. I'll put my quarter down I'm next.
Always stay in the center on bonus 1 , 2 , . Bonus 3 you need to move to the left , then right . It has been a while but i got bored at @180,000 .
I was a kid when this game was originally in arcades. The cabinet froze at level 50 every single time we got to it.
That sucks you only had another 205 levels to go.
255 stages. 256 causes the "Kill Screen" (Either locks up, or resets the game).

No. When you have 2 fighters connected for double-shot, the Galaga bug doesn't employ the tractor beam.
