Casey Affleck winning an Oscar for his performance in _Manchester by the Sea_ is one of those ultra-rare instances where the right person actually won, hands-down, fair and square. right and true. his acting in that is on another level completely from what we usually get from movies, let alone Hollowood movies. not a lot of people in the world could have done what he did - it was a practically perfect characterization. unbelievable work. Daniel Day Lewis / Meryl Streep level work. that's what i think, anyway.
AGREE! Andrew’s role was memorable and moving (plus, the film was beautifully directed) but the depth and raw performance from Casey was unbelievable. Streep level for sure!
There's something refreshing about someone like Casey Affleck winning an Oscar for LEAD actor. He's never been a class-act like Daniel Day-Lewis or Geoffrey Rush. He's never been the hottest guy in the room like DiCaprio or McConaughey. He's never had the star-power of someone like Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington. On top of that, this wasn't a role that required Casey to physically-transform himself like De Niro in Raging Bull, nor was this another "overdue win" like Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. It's like the academy voted for Casey for his acting and not because of some celebrity baggage he carries
richfictionfighter exactly! The lead oscars always seem to go to "stars", while the "smaller" actors only ever have a shot at a supporting Oscar. Nice to see Casey Affleck win for lead (a lot like Brie Larson last year)
richfictionfighter Could never figure out how to explain why he deserved this Oscar and why his performance was the best of the year as well as of the decade and years to come...but your comment nailed my feelings of him exactly! Very nice. 👍
richfictionfighter So true. Don't get me wrong Dicaprio, McConaghuey , and Day-Lewis were all phenomenal in their performances that won them the Oscar. But with Affleck's performance, he was acting with so much raw emotion and nuances. He didn't lose or gain any pounds, he just acted. This is why to me he was the perfect choice to win the Oscar for Best Lead Actor.

Casey Affleck's performance in that movie is one I'll never forget

Personally my favorite was Andrew Garfield but this is because I have a tremendous obsession with the Hacksaw Ridge movie but I can't deny that Casey Affleck's performance in Manchester by the Sea is one of the best male performances of the last century. And as time goes on and the more times I watch the movie, the more I realize that Casey Affleck was the correct winner, it's not an award for a physical transformation, it's not an overdue award and it's not an award for scoring a social box, it's an award for a great performance.
Garfield is great in Hacksaw Ridge, I’m glad he got nominated, but yeah, exactly what you said, Casey gave a tremendous subtle performance with no big dramatic yelling scenes or anything like that, just unadulterated grief.
@@abira2.0 It was definitely a less transformative part like many Oscar winners before and after him in the leading category in which the actor had to put on a big make-over to become his character or to resemble a person from real life. Casey just had to go into this role and look himself and act like himself, just a regular guy without make-up, weight change, or an accent and conveyed the power of his performance through his emotional pain.
The previous year when I saw The Revenant, I said to myself "If DiCaprio doesn't win the Oscar this year, I'm done with those guys." Thankfully, he finally did get what was rightfully his.
I bet you haven't seen Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master. They both won Volpi Award for Best Actor which even more credible than Oscar.
I don't get it. IMO he just walked around looking constipated the entire time. I figured he was too traumatized from the fire and had to repress his emotions but even in the big fire scene he never broke down, just had that constipated look. I think his method was eating just meat and cheese during filming.
She’s talentless. She’s only famous because of her husband. Just maybe she’s sleeping because she knows the only reason she’s at the oscars is because of John Legend
I LOVED Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea. Cried my eyes out! I also thought Andrew Garfield did an outstanding job in Hacksaw Ridge. They're both deserving in my opinion, glad one of them won. Two excellent performances!
I just watched the film yesterday at last, after deferring it for so long. I was moved to tears. I regret sleeping on it before. Man, it's such a powerful, beautiful film. The cast was simply amazing. The script, the pacing. Ah the music, the photography. All of the shots were incredible. The actors and actresses shine so beautifully. All of them were just great; and Casey was, deservedly so, at his utter best. I know, they're late... but congratulations. We need more films and more portrayals like these.
I love when the Oscar goes by itself to whom deserves rather than crawling so many years to get it, in that year Casey’s performance was incomparable with any of the other nominations, that specifically why it was severely known whom it’s going to before even reading the name!
@@madzkl6179 I prefer Casey over Phoenix. Joaquin is a bigger name and his performance as Joker was devastating. However I put him 2nd place cause in my opinion Ledger's Joker was even better.
@@madzkl6179 Question. What make Phoenix the best actor or your or this generation? The fact that he won an oscar? Golden goble, Sag award? It was kinda like fate. Denzel won his first Oscar for his performance in 1989's Glory, a film about an All African-American regiment in the Civil War, led by colonel Robert Gould Shaw (depicted by Matthew Broderick), who came from an imminent Boston family. Then in 2017, he lost to Casey Affleck, who is actually a distant cousin to Robert Gould Shaw (by way of marriage through his grandmother). And I believe Denzel knew the connection. Casey even subtly mentioned this connection in his speech. I bet both feilt a bit spooked.
I'm watching this in 2020, a few days after the delivery of this year (which by the way 2019 was a great great year for the cinema), Cassey really deserve that Oscar, Manchester by the sea is a sad and shocking bomb, all this thanks to its interpretation.

@@cathypennington2474 The whole lineup were all deserving of the win, they all played their characters so, so well but Casey, to me, played his the best.
Sure, Andy is absolutely brilliant. He's one of my faves. Anyway, Affleck gives a performance of a lifetime, one of best acting I've ever seen. He's a giant!
My favorite part of the whole thing is when Ben came to hug Casey like the big brother he is! Casey totally deserved that Oscar, and what's better is that he could brag on how he won an acting Oscar before Ben!
Rarely have i been so convinced of a character's guilt, regret and pain as i was by Mr. Affleck in Manchester by the Sea. Amazing performance, by far one of the best performances of this century, i can't understand why so many people complain, even though Denzel was great too (and i loved Viggo Mortensen as well).
I was head over heels for La La Land when it came out. And was annoyed why Ryan Gosling didn't win. Dumb, I know. But now that I've watched Manchester by the Sea, whooo boy, there was really no chance for anybody else.
I saw an interview of Christian bale . He was promoting his new movie out of the furnace co staring casey Affleck in that interview Christian said that casey is unbelievablely talented he said that don't see this movie for me or for anything else see it just for the work casey did...he was phenomenal. He recognised his talent and even appreciated it publically and now 3 years later here is casey clinching his first for best actor categy which is a huge achievement.. congratulations casey we love you 🎉
I got caught up in the whole media backlash and was against him winning but then decided to watch Manchester and Jesse James out of curiosity. I have to admit that he is an incredibly soulful, mesmerising actor - different from any other actor working today. Reminds me a little of the Brando-Clift-Dean triumvirate. So based on the quality of his acting, he deserves an Oscar, if not two (for Jesse James).
Frostbite I agree with pretty much everything you said- halfway through watching the film, I completely forgot about the accusations and why some were dead-set against him winning- it was that great a performance. Admittedly however, I thought he was brilliant in Jesse James, but Javier Bardem was still my pick for Supporting Actor that year.
Well deserved award for Affleck, despite the allegations he has been dealing with. Affleck's mumblecore performance brings back memories of the 20th Century's all time great brooders such as Brando in On The Waterfront, Monty Clift in From Here to Eternity and so on. It could be considered our generation's most nuanced and understated, but still one of the most compelling and full bodied, and once again, reminding us highly of Brando in On the Waterfront, from the way he explores his character's guilt and regret, and displaying an outward tough-guy persona, getting into bar-fights while drunk, cursing at pedestrians and tenants and moving with his hands in his pockets and his shoulders slumped while he walks, covering up a small, devastated but beating heart. For those that say Denzel was more deserving, the guy would definitely have been a good winner, but he's chewing the scenery in nearly EVERY scene he is in, unlike Viola, whose subtlety (in all, but one scene) stops him from completely devouring every line he has. If you thought Sean Penn or Forest Whitaker were bad, this is some next level shit. Andrew Garfield was sensational in his role, although maybe a bit too understated, and well deserving of his nomination, although his performance in Silence was just as (if not, more) worthy of a nomination. I would say Gosling got a nomination for La La Land mainly due to his dedication to his craft, learning how to dance, play piano etc, but its not a technically strong performance. Joel Edgerton in Loving would have been a worthy substitute. Viggo is Viggo, I would have loved to see him win for Captain Fantastic, but he'll get his. Soon enough.
Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, Ryan Gosling and Vigoo?!?! Can I just melt this down and make 5 Oscar medals and buy them all a glass of champagne? DAMN Nice list
I love Denzel, but its all about awards for that man. After he got the SAG, he was uber pumped and started campaigning like fuck, but the Academy were wise with this one and gave it to the best performance by any male or female of the year, and one of the best of the decade. Denzel loves awards, one time after winning his first SAG, he was asked about his SAG award, and he replied "sometimes my Oscars talk to my SAG at night" or something along those lines. Denzel needs awards to bolster his ego and so he can be viewed as one of the greats. Even with no Oscars, I thought he was always one of the best, but he is one egotistical man no doubt.
Vincent Arderiu So ? Just because you've gotten an Oscar doesn't mean you are never gonna deserve one again Plus he won the sag which usually means you are on lock to win the Oscar so he might have thought he was gonna win
@A is Here Yeah it's a shallow behavior to me, especially since the first thing Casey did was paying tribute to him in front of the whole audience... but whatever... no more judgment, maybe it was so important for him that he forgot to act dignified
I think Denzel only won the SAG because he had never won one before, Casey Affleck had won most of the other awards (Golden Globes, BAFTA, Critic's Choice and most of the critic's awards)
when you can watch a film and become so-engrossed that you forget you're watching a screen but rather a documentary about someones life, you know it's oscar worthy. What a film, gritty and real and doesn't to finish need a fancy bow tie to wrap everything up, making it even more real. That not everything in the real world ends with the protagonist riding off into the sunset with the girl around his arm. Its a perfect mess of one mans struggles, and how he deals with them.
Wow. That was an amazing speech. Casey was so humble and grateful for this award. He deserves it; couldn't have happen to a sweeter guy. Casey, you rock! GOD bless you and your beautiful family!
He was up against some heavy hitters. Been a huge fan of his since To Die For in the 90's. Just love him. The brotherly love here when he won was awesome.

@Damien Montero It's been three years, but you're right. The 2020 Best Actor Line up is even better
I love this speech. So simple and very personal. Without some pretentious bullshit about saving the world or whatever.
Exactly and it has become fashion to speak bullshit and nauseating to hear coming from these Hollywood hypocrites.
How is talking about saving the world pretentious?

Personally my favorite was Andrew Garfield but this is because I have a tremendous obsession with the Hacksaw Ridge movie but I can't deny that Casey Affleck's performance in Manchester by the Sea is one of the best male performances of the last century. And as time goes on and the more times I watch the movie, the more I realize that Casey Affleck was the correct winner, it's not an award for a physical transformation, it's not an overdue award and it's not an award for scoring a social box, it's an award for a great performance.
Did you see the movie? or Denzel in Fences?
I’d go with Andrew Garfield too for sure
Andrew SHOULD have won for Tick, Tick Boom! He broke my heart in that film.
Garfield is great in Hacksaw Ridge, I’m glad he got nominated, but yeah, exactly what you said, Casey gave a tremendous subtle performance with no big dramatic yelling scenes or anything like that, just unadulterated grief.
Just as he did as Robert Ford in the Jesse James movie... his performances are elite level acting.
Great to see the Academy rewarding a more subtle performance for once.
It was not subtle by any means. He brought so much to that role even tho it looked subtle. The emotion I felt watching the movie was unbearable.
@@abira2.0 It was definitely a less transformative part like many Oscar winners before and after him in the leading category in which the actor had to put on a big make-over to become his character or to resemble a person from real life. Casey just had to go into this role and look himself and act like himself, just a regular guy without make-up, weight change, or an accent and conveyed the power of his performance through his emotional pain.
true. I love christian bale but I hope the world cares less about his “body transformation”
Well put
When I saw Manchester by the Sea for the first time, there was no question in my mind that Casey would win Best Actor.
The previous year when I saw The Revenant, I said to myself "If DiCaprio doesn't win the Oscar this year, I'm done with those guys." Thankfully, he finally did get what was rightfully his.
@@MrChaotic4 It was not nearly that convincing. But we all were very happy for him for sure.

Very well deserved Casey ! (In the assassination of Jesse James you were amazing too)
Just remembering his performance in Manchester by the Sea makes me tear up.
Casey’s performance was the best performance of the decade, Not just that year.
I bet you haven't seen Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master. They both won Volpi Award for Best Actor which even more credible than Oscar.
One of best but not the best
It was good but nowhere near best of the decade
Joker???
I don't get it. IMO he just walked around looking constipated the entire time. I figured he was too traumatized from the fire and had to repress his emotions but even in the big fire scene he never broke down, just had that constipated look. I think his method was eating just meat and cheese during filming.
Everyone talks about Brie's reaction during this speech, but Chrissy Teigen @ 2:40 😂😂😂
She’s talentless. She’s only famous because of her husband. Just maybe she’s sleeping because she knows the only reason she’s at the oscars is because of John Legend
She always sleeps 😴😴 😂😂😂
Chrissy Teigen is a jerk. She spends most of her time defending her wealth.
Jane Dough she could have just been tired bc it’s a very long night. It didn’t have to be something personal against affleck
Dean Gulberry just a bitch who wants all white actors to be fired and replaced with black actors cuz all whites are racist.
Me too. Just watched it for the first time. Amazing. Love your profile pic too; timeless album.
Watch "blue valentine" if you havnt !
Wasn’t enough shit getting blown up for most moviegoers.
I love when the Oscar goes by itself to whom deserves rather than crawling so many years to get it, in that year Casey’s performance was incomparable with any of the other nominations, that specifically why it was severely known whom it’s going to before even reading the name!
You know Denzel won SAG right?
His performance in "Manchester by the Sea" was so moving, well deserved Oscar!
Bacu89 I'm sorry but he didn't deserve it, Andrew Garfield should have won the Oscar.
Eric Burns If Affleck didn’t win, I definitely woulda loved to see Garfield win!
William James it was far more than decent lol you probably saw the wrong movie
William James Hacksaw Ridge was the best film of 2016.

3 years later and this is still my favorite Oscar win, even though Joaquin is a close second
yep, the best ever.
@@madzkl6179 I prefer Casey over Phoenix. Joaquin is a bigger name and his performance as Joker was devastating. However I put him 2nd place cause in my opinion Ledger's Joker was even better.
@@madzkl6179
Question. What make Phoenix the best actor or your or this generation? The fact that he won an oscar? Golden goble, Sag award?
Can you provide more details why he is the best In your opinion?
Cause if you think he is the best cause he won it all, lot of actors has done that... With biggers success at the box office. I'm a fan of Phoenix don't get me wrong. But you're putting him and defending him as a God. And here is where I have a problem.
And about the Joker, of course heath gotta be his favorite actor, he was his inspiration. It's like when you're a supervisor your inspiration is your manager cause one day you want to become the one in charge. That's exactly what happened he was the supervisor and when ledger passed away he became the manager.
Of course gotta be his favorite actor if ledger was alive Phoenix would not be the joker today. Never.
And you know it.
@@madzkl6179 everyone knows that health ledger is Phoenix's favorite actor, don't come here pretending to be the "know it all guy". So don't come to UA-cam trying to embarrass me like I know it cause you told me. Come on, give me a break.
And by the way, the best of this generation? Then why was he losing all the roles to DiCaprio? He said it at the Sag awards. He is extremely talented and awesome, I'm a fan of the guy.
But brother... putting him as the best at the top, against people like day Lewis even though he retired, agaisnt people like DiCaprio, Washington, Christian etc putting him as the best, Is way too much.

Matt damon jumping off his seat is friendship goals right there
Casey Affleck is a Superb actor. Fascinating in every role. Keep acting Casey. Your career is fun to watch
The respect for Denzel from Casey's opening line to the speech moved me!
He thanked him on every award evenings. And he swoop like every award that year.
Best performance of the year! So raw! So real!
It's ironic that people like him and Roman Polanski win Oscars, but they snub James Franco because of "may-or-not-be-true" accusations.
Watching Manchester by the Sea right now. He's already brought me to tears twice and I still have 30 min to go. Damn you Casey and your perfect acting.

My favorite part of the whole thing is when Ben came to hug Casey like the big brother he is! Casey totally deserved that Oscar, and what's better is that he could brag on how he won an acting Oscar before Ben!
Ben already won 2 oscars but not for acting. He won for original screenplay for “Good will hunting” and best picture “Argo”
He said "acting" oscar
"before Ben" haha as if Ben is ever getting an Oscar for acting
If he can't act, how's he still making movies and how did Argo win best picture?
Ben just wanted some light on him too.

That movie ripped off the deeer hunter so badly
Matt and Ben's reactions were the best 😭
Casey undoubtedly deserved this one!
Good insights. Didn't catch the Clift until your mentioning it. Spot on.
Wow. Totally agree, very interesting insight.
Those who think Casey didn't give nomination worthy performances in the past...please watch "Out of the furnace" ...and you will remember him forever.
Casey 100% deserved this. He and Denzel were both great, but Casey's performance changed me.

Casey affleck performance literally wet my eyes ... Such an excellent he was
Well deserved. He was fantastic in this movie
Soon enough.
agreed especially about gosling
A Is Here *We need more comment like this*.

Can anyone explain to me why Denzel looks SO pissed ? He already got an oscar in 2002
I love Denzel, but its all about awards for that man.
Vincent Arderiu
So ?
Just because you've gotten an Oscar doesn't mean you are never gonna deserve one again
Plus he won the sag which usually means you are on lock to win the Oscar so he might have thought he was gonna win
he won sag because of all these controversies, so they chose a "better human being", lol. they all knew casey is the absolute best that year.
Andrew Garfield will win one eventually.

when you can watch a film and become so-engrossed that you forget you're watching a screen but rather a documentary about someones life, you know it's oscar worthy.
