This was a great interview. Good questions and a beautiful answer from Michelle Williams. "It's playing music, not building blocks." Love their dynamic. Great film. Casey deserved his Oscar win.
Truly, this was a remarkable movie. Some incredible and extremely subtle acting. I really appreciate their willingness to submerge themselves in this stark, heartbreaking story. Lovely interview. Very talented young people and Michelle is so beautiful it's surreal.
The fact that he sold his brother's guns to get a new boat motor for the kid will always crush me and elevate me at the same time. Like dumping out liquor to make a vase for flowers

I don't care what Michele Williams says about how beautifully written the dialogue was in that one intense scene ... That actually may be true, but her and Casey Affleck made it real and they are both incredible actors!
I love how realistic this movie is and just how deeply sad it is in the most human way. The only thing I was really missing was to see Casey's character just be put in a place where he finally lets out all the guilt he's been feeling and just cries it all out after all the things he's been holding in all those years. I really wish that could have happened it would have gave me closure as a viewer. I still feel sad that he didn't get that...
That would have been the Hollywood ending. Had he said at the end of the movie "Oh, I was sad but my now nephew has given me reason to live!", that would have been a John Hughes movie. The ending was perfect. Nothing much was resolved, and there was no closure because there is no closure in life. We simply cannot let go of previous trauma; it cannot be switched off. The movie is about broken people destroyed by unimaginable tragedy and carrying it with them forever. Sometimes there is no fixing that stuff. But the fact that his nephew did want to continue his relationship with his uncle, and, more importantly, that Lee was open to the possibility was really the only way the movie could have ended.Anything else would have been disingenuous.
Michelle, you are the only actor that could have played the part. Brilliant. The deep impact of pain and toxic guilt upon our lives is forever never ending.
The ending wasn't what I would call happy but certainly not sad. Lee loved his nephew but knew he couldn't take care of him bc he wasn't well. He put through a herculean effort to get his nephew settled in the best way. I think being around his nephew & taking care of him for his future gave Lee some peace. Everything that's broken can't always be fixed.
This is the best film I have ever saw about Guilt and even if I can't see it anymore (It makes me very sad) Casey shows wonderfully his inner pain. A very well deserved Oscar. Actings are so good that it's impossible for me not to feel intense pain for them.
I mean, I don't know the guy outside of movies and interviews, but in ways he reminds me of myself....... and I live with depression. With that sad, I hope he's not depressed or ever has been. I wish all the best and most fulfilling life experiences for him. 💙
Just because the person sounds melancholic doesn't necessarily mean he/she lived through that. Also, clinical depression is permanent, it can be managed, alleviated but not cured (much like diabetes or any other chronic serious illness), so I guess you've meant an episode/experience of severe depression but not clinical (because it's not a finite experience, you can't just be through it, it will be always with you, lurking and resurfacing). How do I know? I live with that shit in the country where genocide is ongoing and noone cares about people like me.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849Dont know, but his role as Robert Ford carried some baggage that was similar to this role. Theres a poignancy, an aura of melancholy, attached to these less then entirely sympathetic characters.
I love how much Casey is as awkward as Lee. Obviously Lee has been through trauma and does not compare but Casey is such a total awkward wierdo and he is perfect for a character like Lee
In a million years i would never think of Casey Affleck as any of those two names you just called him. He is just not even. Casey is an Amazing person. Incredible Actor. Humanitarian. His list of accolades is long. He performed the character of Lee brilliantly like no one else ever could. I think he is very deep and has probably experienced life in ways nobody knows but those close to him; it is obvious he has a well to draw from. I am always hopeful when I see he has made another film. Brave Onward Casey 🌞💖💪🍀 ~
matt damon would have ruined this movie as the lead and as the director, good move getting out of the way but stop patting yourself on the back for getting out of the way and stop inserting yourself into this masterpiece.
It's funny because Casey acted as himself basically, look at him, he is just stoic. Supposedly it's "easier" for a naturally stoic actor to do a lifeless role. On everything else Casey is very limited, but on this "type-casting" situation he did a great job.
Have you seen Assassination of Jessie James or Over the Furnace or Gerry? I would like to register that your comment was idiotic. Christian Bale basically said that Casey was one of the finest actors working around.
@@senthilvelan544 Fellow actors usually tends to tap themselves on the back, praise in a inner circle means nothing. Didn't watched Jesse James yet, but I did watched gone baby gone... And Casey was just stoic as always. He and his brother are basically identical, they don't have any kind of emotional range. When they try the more "lively" role, it feels forced and out of place. For a naturally depressed individual to play a depressive role, obviously the performance will fell "realistic".
I assume actors have role preferences: either roles where they can be someone UNLIKE themselves or roles they can utilize as their own outlet. Casey is GREAT at deep, emotional characters -- I think because he understands it and/or relates to the mindset/temperment, etc. I would like to see him play a sad character that gets a happy ending though... He and his characters deserve fulfillment.
god this is a bad interview... the actors are realy not there they seems off.. i dont know.. its like they michelle and casey are not cool with each other.. during these interview
because you don't have to push these topics in all and every possible way. sometimes you can just appreciate the beauty of film and simply talk about that.
I don't see why people keep insisting that there wasn't a happy ending of sorts. As I recall, he is last seen enjoying the fresh sea air from a boat ride.
Most people say that it isn't ''typically hollywood happy'' (aka he's still alone and will be bereaved/living with guilt forever) but not a sad one either as he opened up to his nephiew and achieved some semblance of peace. I would say, considering the tough subject movie, the ending was as optimistic as it could get without becoming unrealistic or melodramatic.
pivotal scene was police station. stunning.
That was a brutally beautiful scene.
Have to say, the talk between Michelle and Casey was what did it for me.

I like your comparison. My first thought at that scene (when he's looking at the guns) was wondering if he was contemplating a way out.
Considering his state of mind and his previous attempts at suicide, it was best for him to sell the guns and use it to make the kid happy.
Casey Afflect is perfect for the role. It's kind of part of him. Not Matt Damon.
Calvin Chu i like Matt Damon but this role wasn't for him

Yeah it is perfect for him because he is like that in real life hehe Even his voice is monotone real life
The ending was life. Life is rarely tied up with a big beautiful bow, it often tied with fraying twine. You can quote me, lol

Yep. Perfect/happy endings are almost boring sometimes (plus “perfect/happy”) are sometimes super subjective). Real life oftentimes just ain’t so.
