The Masterpiece is of course not 7 times better than the Kum Longpoint when it comes to basic sharpening. However, it does provide an option that the other does not. With the Masterpiece, you can expose more core that is useful for pencil artists. For that, we would expect to pay more. Seven times more? Depends on the user of course. The Big Triple sharpener actually provides more options than the Masterpiece for much less.
In addition manufacturing costs must be considerably higher. It comes with 2 blades and screws rather than one (as well as 2 more spare blades), it has a plastic cover, a case and the blue depth gage/spare blade holder. More pieces to make, more money to make them. You are getting more tool for the money, and with the spare blades maybe a longer lasting one unless you can hunt down spares for the single hole KUM.
I like the masterpiece. I like that I can have longer points also when using the second hole I like that I can save the grafite shavings in a little container to use when drawing.
I totally agree with you. The KUM STENOGRAPH LONG POINT 400-5L has much more value than the, on the other hand, absolutely great KUM MASTERPIECE. It costs around 1/8th to 1/9th the price at the expense of just half cm shorter point, but being more compact and with faster sharpening ability. So the STENOGRAPH, in my opinion, is a far more worthy option, because it's definitely not 1/8th to 1/9th worse. 👍🏻 I'd have liked, however, you to compare these two with the M+R CASTOR and the M+R POLLUX, both long points as well (the last one slightly concave).
I think the Masterpiece is great in that one could use the shavings of watercolour pencils instead of throwing them away or save the shavings to use later.
Does the KUM AUTOMATIC LONG POINT (multiple slots) have all the housing made of plastic? Or does it have any part made of metal apart from the blades? Which one sharpens a longer tip: the all-magnesium KUM MASTERPIECE (double slot) or the all-magnesium KUM LONG POINT 400-5L (single slot)? And compared to the all brass M+R CASTOR (single slot)?
Thank you for this. I had the Masterpiece in my pencils.com cart yesterday and balked at pulling the trigger. I'm happy with the single hole long point sharpener. I also have the plastic Kum Automatic two-hole sharpener and I need to measure the point lengths between that two-hole and the single-hole long point sharpener.
I own both the KUM "Long Point" and the "Masterpiece.," and I think the Long Point wins hands down. For one thing, it's $1.95 on Pencils.com, so there's no beating the price. That said, I don't mind paying a lot more for something if it brings a lot more to the table...but you don't get a lot more with the Masterpiece. The first hole exposes the core well, but the second stage is no good. You've got to delicately twist that thing at a perfect angle to keep from snapping the lead off.
Lord Monty hi! Hope you don’t mind I asked- is it possible to find blade replacement for KUM “single” long point sharpener? I have been looking everywhere and can’t locate one. Thank you for advice!
Excellent video! Thanks. I am leaning toward the single hole long point sharpener and wonderful if anyone was able to locate the blade replacement? I saw some 3 piece set on jet pen but not sure those fits this single hole long point sharpener. Would appreciate if anyone could advice. Thank you
Where can I purchase refillable blades for the plastic palomino blackwing 2-part long point pencil sharpener? Can you buy them at CW pencil enterprise? I dropped my blades in the garbage can by accident 😔
I use the Masterpiece but the tip is so sharp it usually snaps a small amount off at the beginning of every Palomino Pearl I use. Even the 602 does the same thing!
I use a long point with my writing pencils, the number 3s , 4s, 2Hs and harder. A sharp blade is a must. For softer drawing pencils, I go regular point.
+Nechto First, because the length of the entire point (exposed wood + graphite) is easier to measure. A 2-D cross-section of the entire point makes a similar triangle with a cross-section of just the exposed graphite, so the longer the entire point, the longer the exposed graphite.
That KUM Long Point ripped me off. I couldn't find a replacement blade. A previous one that I ended up returning wasn't precision-engineered too well. I'd stay away from this one.
I would like to know if this new sharpener will work on artist pencils such as coloured pencils, watercolour pencils and pastel pencils? also some of these are not a round barrel but hexagonal thanks!

Have you ever tried the M+R Triangular Magnesium Triple Hole Pencil Sharpener? It's my favourite.

Nice video. Would like to see a sharpener that can create a super long point though.
Afmat
The single hole long point seems like the best choice.
The masterpiece just looks like a way yo waste pencils faster.
Just the opposite. You can repoint on the Masterpiece without chewing up a lot of wood.

+FP Physicist Ok, i like this engineer-styled explanation :)

How much does the kum masterpiece cost
Around 18 usd
It is pretty trivial to sharpen the blades rather than keep buying the sharpener, but for $2 there is always the argument of the worth of your time.

What pencils are those?
palomino golden bear blue
Very nice video girl, thank you.

Loving her beautiful feet.
Ssssssssooo
Thumbs down for your overly loud and plenty "UHM"s. Very annoying.
Why do you pronounce it Koom when its obviously pronounced CUM....
The Green Avenger X1 I think it is European pronunciation!
K U M is German. Properly pronounced "koom" to rhyme with boom.
