  • This is one of the best portable pencil sharpeners I've ever used. The Kum Automatic Long Point is capable of sharpening pencils to a long point.

It's automatic because you are supposed to keep sharpening it until it hits the stop. Not when it just reaches the stop area. Then the point is even longer!

I ordered this sharpener from Amazon. Love it. Recommended it to my art class and one other member has bought it also. She also loves it. This model is wonderful for the thicker lead mechanical pencils. Thanks for the recommendation.

I was actually shopping today at Hobby Lobby which is a arts and crafts store here in the states. Because of your review on this sharpener, I decided to see if they carried this. Much to my surprise they did! I do have to say it is a the best sharpener I have come across. It does everything you say it does. And it's a huge plus it comes with extra blades. Thank you so much for your review on this Teoh!

I fully agree with your comments Teoh. I bought the first of these sharpeners a couple of years ago and was so impressed that I stocked up with three or four more in reserve. My other types of sharpener rarely, if ever, get used now. Thanks for another informative video.

I'm surprised you barely discovered this. They are awesome. The only problem that I had is that it was very fragile. The clear plastic cover broke off on mine, not that I needed it anyways since it held very little pencil shavings. I still have it in my room somewhere. I got a Uni KH-20 Hand Crank Wooden Pencil Sharpener by Mitsubishi and I felt in love with it that I sharpened all my pencils that I had in my house including my color pencils. The con side is that its not portable unlike the KUM sharpener. They both can sharpen pencils with a long point.

I absolutely agree- best sharpener I've owned too! Mine is red and doesn't come with the point sharpeners. It cost 49,- NOK at Clas Ohlson which is comparable to the price of most pencil sharpeners here anyway. Most sharpeners I've experienced don't like to take larger barrelled pencils (Derwent Inktense, Derwent Drawing etc), but this one works well with all the pencils I own.

LG.

I agree with you, Parka. I discovered this pencil sharpener a few years ago and I have used no other portable pencil sharpener since. I really love having that very sharp, long point, even when I was a child in school. I used to get yelled at by my teachers for going to the classroom pencil sharpener so often because I just can't effectively draw or write with a dull pencil.
I think that even more replacement blades may be available, I found a UK seller on eBay uk that stocks blades and they may fit this sharpener. I am still using the blades that came with my last sharpener but if I order replacement blades and they fit I will let you know the seller's contact info so you can post it.
Thanks again for posting these videos.

A good review Teoh, and yes it is a great sharpener and it comes with 2 spare blades and as I use leadholder pencils a lot, it's a real added bonus to be able to sharpen the leads. My only criticism is that I found the blades blunt very quickly, but there doesn't seem to be any other portable (and small) sharpener available on the market that I know of.

I have the same style sharpener (minus the lead holder sharpener on the side) that is for my Blackwing pencils (and labeled on the side as such - the lettering is in gold and the sharpener base is black with a clear flap for the shavings) and is my favourite sharpener by far! I just wish it would work for my Derwent Coloursoft colour pencils.

  • @sdovas
    @sdovas 8 років тому +1

Actually the larger of the 2 small holes at the back can be used to "point" the lead after sharpening the pencil with the larger hole at the front. this should give you sharpened and tapered wood with extended lead which you then sharpen with the smaller sharpener in back of the large hole. I have an earlier iteration of this excellent sharpener before the hinged lid. still works beautifully.

Hi Teoh, if you like that sharpener check out the KUM Masterpiece sharpener. It is simlar in function but has a machined body with a dovetailed end stop that can be slid off to cut back as much wood as you want. These extra long points can be finished with a sand block to any length required for side shading.

On your recommendation I ordered a Kum sharpener. What you failed to mention is that it does not work for pastel pencils. The tips break off because the pastel part is thicker than a graphite pencil. the broken bit gets stuck and can only be removed by taking the thing apart. Bummer.

    • @teohyc

Wrong usage. It stops automatically when sharpening at hole one, then you use hole two. You stopped at hole one by yourself and that is not how the sharpener is meant to be used as like I said it stops automatically and that is why it is called Kum "Automatic".

Does the KUM AUTOMATIC LONG POINT (multiple slots) have all the housing made of plastic? Or does it have any part made of metal apart from the blades?
Which one sharpens a longer tip: the all-magnesium KUM MASTERPIECE (double slot) or the all-magnesium KUM LONG POINT 400-5L (single slot)?
And compared to the all brass M+R CASTOR (single slot)?

    • @teohyc

According to what I've read and watched on videos, the M+R CASTOR certainly does give the pencils a longer point than the standard sharpeners, but what I ignore is if the KUM MASTERPIECE and the KUM LONG POINT 400-5L both give even longer points than the M+R CASTOR.
I'd like someone to list, from longer to shorter points, the three:

leon kastilyo 128gb should be enough. It really depends on what you want to do. After OSX and the applications, you'll most likely be left with 115GB. If you install software, that's going to take up more space. If you constantly move your data off to the external, it should be no problem. Or you can get one of those 128GB thumbdrive for USD $30. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017DH3O5A/?tag=ttmus-20
