Timeline of How the OKC Thunder FAILED to Win a Title

- Oklahoma City Thunder were young, upstart team that took the NBA by storm in the early part of the decade. Along with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, they looked like they were set to become the NBA’s next dynasty.
In a few years later, they have only one NBA Finals appearance to show for drafting three league MVPs. With unfortunate circumstances, they enter a rebuilding phase without achieving the league’s ring even once.

@@jaywarvz Drafted 3 future MVPs Kevin Durant,Russell Westbrook and James Harden
the fact that winning 50 games in 09-10 only got them the 8th seed in the west is insane
Indeed. Very stacked
You should see the 2008 Western Conference, 7 games separated the 1-8 seeds, the 55 win Suns were the 6th seed
To be fair 4 teams had 50-32 in the west that season
Lebron been to more finals but no one has had a harder road to the finals than the black mamba.
East and West had DEPTH!
2:33 50 wins and only 8th, the west was brutal back in 2010
So many powerhouse teams
The strange thing is that they were only 7 games behind the 1st seeded Lakers that year. Not only was it brutal, but all 8 playoff teams were very close in win total as well.
The West was really talented that year. Kobe's Lakers, Dirk's Mavericks, Nash's Suns, Melo's Nuggets....it was really competitive.
2010 Lakers is one of few teams to beat four 50-win teams in one playoffs run
Crazy how they drafted 3 mvps in a row
True man
@Hank Rutherford Hill ?? GSW only drafted one MVP in Stephen Curry
@@lvr6114 bro what?
And all are gone
@@lvr6114 They drafted Steph, Klay, and Dray
Looking back OKC drafted damn near perfectly ! Shame they never got a chip
Yeah man
seattle won a chip in 79 so they did
I mean we're talking about okc and durant's era
Terrible coaching in the playoffs
One key event contributing to their downfall missing from the timeline:
Shortly after trading for Perkins, OKC extended him for 4 years and $36 million. Then when it came time to negotiate Harden's extension, OKC chose to remain under the luxury tax and lowballed Harden. That Perkins extension limited their financial flexibility, and few people think Perkins came close to living up to that contract. Boston was only willing to go to 4 years and $22 million, and once that hit an impasse, they traded Perk.
The Perkins contract isn't really among the worst contracts of all time, but the domino effect of that whiff is one of the most significant in recent NBA history. But overvaluing Perkins could've been overcome if the team didn't insist upon trying to win an NBA title with All-NBA superstars while managing a second-tier payroll. Winning doesn't come cheap.
Thanks for that info man
If they didn’t send Harden away to Houston when he was just entering his prime…. They could’ve easily had another go at it in 2013….
I’m sorry for you OKC fans though. You all were so close and who knows if you’ll ever get another chance with the management that you have.
No doubt man
Probably would've got swept by the Heat in 2013
We could've made it all the way to the Finals but then Patrick Beverley happened. We were the best team in the West even without James
It's not like they wanted to send Harden away. OKC was a small market team and they already spent their budget on KD, Russ and Ibaka. And Harden wanted a bigger contract while being the first option, so his leaving was inevitable.
can we really blame them when during their time, the west was brutal and when they reached the finals what was waiting was Miami.
Yeah man. So many powerhouse teams
Yeah and the years they were right there(WCF). Lost to Popovich, Duncan and crew and GSW with the greatest range shooters in history; Curry and Klay.
Oh man what a strong team OKC was back in the day. KD,Harden,Russ. They played so well and almost won a title. They managed to draft 3 MVPs but failed to win a title. For me OKC was a great team but didn't ein a title.
Yeah. I guess they were not really destined to win it all
Real Thunder fans know the Kendrick Perkins trade hurt this franchise more than anything. He was such a liability, especially on a team that already had shooting problems. That's why a huge percentage falls on Scott Brooks, he was a terrible offensive coach.
That's right man
Are you high? Perkins sucks yes. But at least he was a presence. Do you remember Nenad. Dude was constantly bullied. Without that move they never go to the finals. The worst move they made was coming to okc. Ugliest city in the nba. You'll never get a good free agent that isn't in a position to have to prove they can still play on okc. Nobody wants to play there. I mean nobody. Players have retired because okc was the only team that would pick them up
but was a great defensive mind and overall good at developing his players
I'm so surprised with these draft picks, it's amazing how they get 3 MVP caliber players in the draft 3 seasons in a row.
Yeah man
Their downfall all started when they had the audacity to put a 3rd pick on the bench
Yeah man
actually he volunteered to come off the bench, god knows why he wanted to. scott brooks asked harden if he wanted to be a starter, but harded prefered coming off the bench. it was on scott brooks as well for even asking james if he wanted to start when he shoulda just forced him to be their starting shooting guard. dude was too talented to volunteer to come off the bench. okc really fumbled the bag trading away a generational talent
@@drayko4157 Exactly. He shouldn't have the ability to hinder a team like that
no it started when they didn’t resign that 3rd pick
@@housesports000 They only didn't because they didn't see his full potential. One led to the other
OKC draft picks were absolutely stacked!
Very stacked man
it's almost a joke i mean, i've done that in 2K
The Last good pick was domas
They lost the Greek Freak in 2013! They could win the championship if they had picked Giannis
@@athanasioskosmas3915 we didnt lose him
We already got 3 future mvps

I still wished kd won a ring with the thunder so it would make his warriors move less weaker 🥲
Well yeah man
It would probably be worse! You can't go to a 73-9 team as a Once in a Generation talent, after they beat your team when y'all were up 3-1. Probably the weakest move in basketball i ever witnessed. But KD is still a god with the basketball but that move with ridiculous.
@@toxicmelody6228 The move would have only been understandable if the KD Thunder beat the 73-9 Warriors
He should've never gone what you mean made his move less weaker wtf
I still wish sonics never left to okc
Damn I never realized how bad they're fg percentage was through the decade my goodness
Yeah man. Struggling
Ibaka still doesn't get the credit he deserves
What’re you talking about? casuals might not
Seattle drafted him along with Russ and KD
What
Yeah true. If he wasn't injured for 2 games against the legendary 2014 spurs team. It could've been different.
Honestly i’d consider Seattle and OKC as two different franchises
Probably man
They could have formed a dynasty with harden, kd, russ, and ray allen. (They prob wouldn't have gotten harden though, but still would have had a big three)
Allen never played for the Oklahomo Shitty Plunder
@@YankeesLife He played for the Sonics and was traded for Jeff Green the night KD was drafted.
@@Sai4651 if Ray and Kd are teamates its contender so they will not draft russ and harden

@@YankeesLife Yeah that Sonics team was trash asf glad they moved to a place that wanted them.
I’d like to request a timeline of the Indiana Pacers from losing to the Lakers in the 2000 Finals to the moment Paul George arrived in Indiana. So 2000-2010.

I can't believe they traded Harden over $4 million dollars. It still kills me to this day. Those 3 would have been special and I think they would have at least got one ring together

As a sonics man, this is painful to watch but on the other hand Oklahoma did nothing wrong getting the sonics, Seattle had the arena problems since day one and they never did a thing to fix it
True man
What killed the Sonics chances of staying in Seattle was that the city and state had already put over $1 billion of taxpayer money into new stadiums for the Seahawks and Mariners less than 10 years prior and too many state politicians and citizens didn't want any more spent on the Sonics. Like the Washington State governor said at the time, "I understand how passionate Sonics fans are...I also understand how passionate taxpayers are; I've heard from them loud and clear."
Given how they're based in OKC, they would've moved either way unless they got Seattle to foot the bill for a state-of-the-art arena.
@@Tyrunner0097 that's the thing politicians only care about saving taxes for the taxpayers if it's sports but when it comes to everything else they show no mercy about it

@@jaywarvz At least they're not like the Sacramento Kings
A lot of details were missed on this one including the sale of the sonics 2006 purchased by Clay Bennett

Imagine having to deal with a stacked West in 2010 as a super young team, then when finally reaching the finals having to deal with a Lebron super team and then having to deal with dynasty teams like the Spurs and Goldenstate. I'll never think KD's move was the right move, but I can imagine he was fed up.

You should have emphasized the Andre Roberson injury. That's the main reason that the thunder underperformed in 2017-18 and 2018-19. They would have made it to at least the second round if they didn't have to start Terence Ferguson

I have always thought that OKC's best chance to win the championship was in 2014(The very strong Spurs still took them 6 games to close out without Ibaka playing 2 games. It would've been different if he was playing) and 2015. 2016 was close too but they blew it :( 2015 was the BEST chance. If only the injuries didn't fk them in 2014 and 15. It still haunts me till today.

Jeff Green was the most interesting piece but still. Jeff Green a real hooper though. He had open heart surgery in like 2011

The team was fking dumb to give harden a few more mil so he couldve stayed. They couldve won a ship the next few years if harden was still there. But that OKC team was plagued by injuries since 2012 man. WB injured in 13, ibaka didnt play 2 games vs spurs in 14. KD injured in 15.
