Such a perfect show.....the actors / cast , the sets , the scripts / writing , the directors , the producers , the atmosphere , mood m music , etc. , SUBLIME..........
Tom Jennings was the most terrifying vampire of them all, and yet, it was only a short time that Don Briscoe played this character. I was eight years old when I saw these and I was shaking, lol. Jennings was not a gentlemanly, elegant type of vampire, in the mode of Lagosi's Dracula, or Frid's Barnabas Collins. No, "Caped Count," was Jennings, dressed in common work clothes, pale looking, sunken, dark eyes, and huge teeth. He was blood thirsty monster, a walking, trance-like dead man - a Zombie. Scared me to death in 1968. Some of this footage I haven't seen since 1968 - a heady and productive year for the series. Kids in school would talk about the episodes the next day. The show was the rage. The actors said they often slipped out side-doors of the studio, in order to avoid the mob of fans, queued outside the building each day after a shoot, looking for autographs and glimpses of the stars of the show. They had a limited budget and many scenes were done almost live, with no time for re-takes. It was a talented crew on every level that made this show so striking and memorable - the lighting, sets and sound effects, the eerie drama of Robert Cobert's music, the great writers and, of course, these incredible actors and actresses that made the series a remarkable piece of television.
You're a couple of years older than me. I started watching DS when I was about five years old. I watched it every day after arriving home from school like so many others.
"Well, THAT was rude of Dr. Hoffman! To just walk by me and not say hello! Sometimes I wonder why I am still working here!" (LOL. It was always about Mrs. Johnson).
I bet they had a ball making this show. Yes, Julia had a funny scream. They would flub their lines. They would look right at the camera. Great memories. I loved it.
That's a nice thought, but having gone to many DS conventions between 1987 to the 2010's (L.A. then Burbank) it was hard work, and stressful. Being the experimental show it was on a tight budget, there was nearly no room for error. Let that sink in. This is why there were 'bloopers' occasionally. EVERY show to this has them if re-takes didn't exist to edit them out. As far as flubbing their lines, we all 'flub our lines' so to speak in everyday speaking interactions when we correct ourselves. They looked into the camera (or didn't) as directed. The 1969-71 episodes had a lot of close-ups that were too close, but that wasn't on the actors. The show was going into its decline then anyway, the other not withstanding.
Am I the only one who noticed the poster on the wall that exhorts people to give blood? Look at the hospital wall when this video gets to 2:45! Kind of Ironic, isn't it? ~Janet in Canada
For this 61 year-old gal, Don Briscoe was the most gorgeous man, yet the scariest Vampire on this show. And his beautiful voice…His (vampire) stage make-up made him look almost unrecognizable, to me. I wished DB would have had more screen time and had stayed longer. So sad that he is gone; so much talent.😢
Now that Tom Jennings is dead. Joe Haskell went to visit his grave, grieving & mourning him. When he left, both Barnabas & Willie planned to dig up Tom Jennings's grave to stake him. Then they discovered the coffin & it was empty. That means both vampires Angelique & Tom Jennings are on the loose. Whilst Dr. Julia is in the lab with a covered cadaver, Tom Jennings appeared to her, he bit & sucked some of her blood, and Julia screamed a blood-curdling scream. (This part made my cat's ears up like an owl🦉) Unfortunately, she is under his influence, Bummer. 😠Tom Jennings began to summon Julia to come to him & then sucked her blood again the second time. Julia went back to Collinwood. Barnabas is beginning to be suspicious. Then, Barnabas found out the two marks on Julia's neck. Tom Jennings summons Julia again & Barnabas is with Julia to prevent her from going to Tom Jennings. Then Jennings appeared to her when Barnabas pointed a gun (which must contain six silver bullets) at him, but he disappeared. Then Julia escaped. Elizabeth Stoddard was out at the cemetery alone when Jennings appears almost sucked her blood when she screamed a blood-curdling scream (this part made my cat's ears up like an owl 🦉too), then Roger appears, and Jennings disappeared. Elizabeth Stoddard is so scared that she doesn't want to go back to the Windcliff Hospital. But Roger insists. Then, Jennings summons Julia again to suck her blood again.
Can always count on Angelique to be at the root of chaos . This was hold your breath with Tom loose. Of course who has to save Julia but Barnabas. These 2 depended on each other and saved each other more than once.
Did something happen to Elizabeth??? Why does she think she will be buried alive? Joan Bennet was a marvelous actress, and I admired her a lot. I guess Julia is still under Tom's power. Tom is Julia's new vampire lover. lol! Barnabas is jealous, I think. ~Janet in Canada
Cassandra (Angelique) put a curse on Elizabeth when they got into a heated argument. (Elizabeth came to suspect that Cassandra was up to no good). Elizabeth was lucky in that she took on both Angelique and, before that, Laura. Laura let her off easy by putting her into a catatonic state rather than killing her. Both curses were lifted from Elizabeth when Laura and Angelique left Collinwood.
Poor Tom Jennings. He was just a working stiff, a simple electrician. Goes to Nicholas Blair's house to fix a light switch, sees Angelique's coffin, and gets turned into a vampire for his trouble! I hope somebody informed OSHA about this particular "workplace hazard"!
You ain't lying Tom Jennings he would have lived if it hadn't been for Angelique I could go do that when I let her go she would know what time it is💥🥂 talk about blood curdling screams Julia could do it how did he get out of that coffin and cover that grave back up they left that out.😂🤷♂️ he had to be a fast digger.😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🌪
I didn't think much of Don Briscoe to begin with. Over time, however, either he got better or I grew to appreciate him. At the end, he seemed as good as any of the guys. I imagine the semi-live style of production either induced survivalist method/good acting or death by hairspray ignition.
Tom discovered Angelique's coffin in Nicholas' house, so he had to go. With Julia, it was more complicated. At the time, there was a life link between Adam and Barnabas that kept the latter from reverting to his vampire state. Nicholas wanted to take control of Adam and literally "breed" him to create a race of Frankensteins that Nicholas would rule over. Julia was in the way of that plan by way of perpetuating the life link between Adam and Barnabas, which had to be broken for Nicholas to follow through. That is why he sent Tom after her. (Angelique also wanted Barnabas to revert to his vampire state out of revenge, and she was also jealous of Julia because of her closeness to Barnabas).
I love ❤ DS as much as any true devotee. However, I must deride the ridiculousness of Willie's stupidly. He, of all people, knowing what he knows about Tom being cursed by Angelique, should have immediately suspected Julia of being bitten by Tom Jennings as a vampire when he found her lying on the floor, complaining of a stiff neck! Such a stupid plot hole by the writers! I call foul and an unsult to the viewers' intelligence for letting that one pass by.
1968 was really the peak year creatively for Dark Shadows, before the boorish, screaming Quentin largely ruined it. At 11/12/13 in 1969-'70 I accepted him. but re-watching DS now in 2024 at 66-67, he's really unwatchable. If that upsets some people, too damn bad. I'm an original fan of the show going back to '66 which gives me every right to say it!
LOL. When Julia meets Tom in the "woods", you can hear her shoes clicking against the tile floor. And when Tom bites her, she could at least take off the scarf. It looked as if he was biting through it. 😛

Tom Jennings was truly frightening when he attacked Julia in the lab.
It was really nasty!

Why did you feel compelled to write a lengthy summary of the video when it isn't at all necessary since we all watched it right here? Weird!

She was the original "Scream Queen", well before all the later slasher movie actresses.
Tom Jennings was buried, and had a headstone, THE DAY AFTER HE DIED?????????

I have to agree. When Don became Chris, things changed for the better as he became the haunted werewolf.
Good actor
