Time Team S19-E11 King John's Lost Palace

  • Tony and the Team don their hunting green, pick up their bows and arrows and head for the fringes of Sherwood Forest, where residents of Clipstone village in Nottinghamshire believe some impressive ruins in a farmer's field may have played a part in the ancient tales of Robin Hood and Bad King John.
    The history books describe these crumbling walls as the remains of a royal hunting lodge. But the locals believe it was actually a palace: a vast complex of chambers, chapels and halls where King John stayed when hunting in Sherwood Forest.
    Royal hunting lodges were very popular with the kings of medieval England, and John was no exception, but was this one so grand as to be more important than all the others?
    The extensive building records and a few tantalising high-quality carvings prove there was certainly a fine building somewhere here, but finding out what it looked like and how large it was frustrates the archaeologists for a good while.
    The trenches reveal a great array of finds, but it's not until the clock is counting down the third day that all becomes clear...

      She was supposed to be an archeological addition, educated, but brought in for her looks. Ugggh no dirt on her unlike Carenza, Helen & Jackie. Her addition pissed Mick off so much that he refused to return with her the next season. He did not respect her and it caused Time Team to end. So sad. Another female was not so necessary. Besides she is not lovely she is pretty but huge. Larger than most men on T.T.

    • @corneliawissing7950
      @corneliawissing7950 3 роки тому +2

      @@Go-Dawgs , I also liked Raksha's sweet, toothy grin and her excitement. To this new girl's credit, I've read that she actually realised she was only there to 'enhance' the scripted, inane phrases she was permitted to speak and worked out her contract and left.

    • @S_Evenwar
      @S_Evenwar 2 роки тому +4

      @@Go-Dawgs Mick was also upset that they fired half the archeological team without even talking to him, wanted to resemble what Countryfile had become, in his words, "that (Countryfile) is a programme which went from being a programme presented by farmers and people who knew about the countryside to one in which there is only one farmer and is full of cliche-ridden crap."
      He also state that there were complaints about the ratings but the show never had consistent marketing nor a consistent time slot. Mary-Ann Ochota seems to have been more of a final straw, as opposed to the beginning of the end.
      I think Mick saw what the real draw for the show was giving an easy and understandable access to archeology and the experts involved. Not giving us a second (and unneeded) host nor dumbing things down. That it was canceled a season after Mick left makes me think Taylor had zero clue as to what made the show a success. That's why he tried to do those changes and didn't even bother to get input from that actual experts and professionals involved.
      I have nothing against Ochota, but more often than not she seems like a square peg in a round hole. I'm sure she did just fine in the other shows she did.

    I'd be curious what a plant specialist could add to your investigations. Where there were people, they brought or encouraged/domesticated certain plants. It's possible they could even find plant traces in masonry crevices.
    Where I live we're told that lilac, not being native, is a sign of human occupation. It's known as a "foundation planting." It was planted around outhouses to help cover any smell, near windows to allow for freshening the house when in bloom, and sometimes planted over miscarried babies, and newborns who had died. Interesting stuff.
    Fascinated by what you do. Thanks for putting it out there ; )

      Christian Patriot by not being used and desanctified it just became another building for taking stone from. The chapel here was only a chapel of ease and noy used at all times, only when the hunting lodge was in use. At all other times you would have to go the church in Clipstone (this location is in Kings Clipstone) or Edwinstowe (where legend has it that Robin and Marian married). It fell out of use when the hunting lodge fell out of use.

    To whom it may concern, (individuals responsible for the screw up), I am confused! Why is it that every time you have a successful educational show, it gets ruined by some clown who thinks that boobs need to be added? No offense meant to Mary Ann, i am sure she is a fine and wonderful young lady, but what did she do for the show? To quote M.W. Keating who posted a yr ago, "They seem to have gotten rid of Stewart, John and Helen and replaced them with the lady in pink who adds nothing", and he is a absolutely correct! I Love England, (being of English ancestry I would right?) and this show was fantastic. Here in the states we do not have the 1000 yrs of archaeology to uncover, study and be wowed by. Also, like so many of the fans of this show, I am saddened by Mick's death, It really was like losing a dear friend. Can't you bring this show back and focus on the archaeology and teaching like you did before when the show was in its first 12 yrs or so? That way all of us that watched and supported and was educated by it can be apart of giving a Legacy to a great Archaeologist. I watch and re watch these episodes and I learn things every time. I truly cannot think of a better educational show for anyone even slightly interested in Archaeology than this show. I have ordered books authored by Archaeologists featured on this show simply because I cant get enough of it, and I know that I am not the only one who feels this way. So hey, come on, the air ways are filled with boobs, sex and stupid sitcoms, please, give back to those of us who thrive on this type of show, preferable THIS SHOW! Trust me, Mick would smile! Thank you for reading. Please fee free to comment!

      Joseph Heatherly - Ms. Ochota, unlike some on the show, actually did work in a relevant field: anthropology (Emmanuel college, Cambridge). She was on the show one season (No. 19, 2002). Your public fetishising of her chest does nothing but bring shame to your heritage.

If you look her up in wikipedia you will see that she is a smart person but when you join a show just as with any job your abilites may not be used and your intelligence demoted to make others (and their egos) look more important. I love the way these archeologists find a fragment of broken pottery and it is the missing piece of evidence they needed, and from this 1inch square piece of pottery that is covered in mud, so it could be a stone, they can tell it came from a jug and instantly know the complete history of the area.
    Or by looking at the radar printout, they know this was a two story building.
    How do they do that?
    "They found an ornate stone that obviously fell off the building". It doesn't seem too obvious to me.

    • @gasfiltered

      As said above, they all had day jobs at various universities, this was a weekend gig. Additionally, the crew was huge, over 70, so 3 days limits the enormous cost and allows for more episodes. There's also the PR factor; many times the crew would blaze in on a Thursday, doubling the population of whatever little village they were invading with trucks and diggers and a helicopter, emptying the pub of food and generally upending life. Not overstaying a welcome is important to run a show for 20+ years.

    • @animerlon
      @animerlon 3 роки тому

      It comes down to time & money. They'd never be able to completely cover a site in a reasonable time. Some sites can take decades to get the whole story. Then the cost would be unpredictable, you never know what you might run into. They wanted to produce a weekly, one hour TV show, not two hours or more documentaries.
      The show is basically like one of their one meter square test pits. It's down & dirty archeology, go in, get what you can & get out with a basic idea of what's there. This way, they can spread themselves wider & cover a lot more sites. Which is a more effective use of their resources.

    I would dearly like to know how much each cast member got paid for all their hard work, as well as the overall budget of each episode (which I've read was around 200k pounds per episode), and the overall worth of the whole franchise.
    I mean, they ruined the formula of the show in the later seasons by getting rid of essential experts. Perhaps it was to save money and skimp on the budget?
    I know, I know... crazy speculation on my part... but I can still fantasize... what if someone with the money and a love of history had stepped in and bought the series completely from Wildfire or whoever owned it at the time, and stuck with the original formula?
    Just pure daydreaming on my part to be sure.... but worth thinking about. I get the impression that Mick was getting paid a pittance, (as well as most of the others) and they were doing it just for the sheer love of preserving English history and trying to reach out to a younger generation of British kids.
    My heart really goes out to the heroes of Archaeology. God Bless 'Em. They got my love and respect to the end.

      I've noticed as I've gone through and annotated every episode with the geo. coordinates, how well they restore the sites.
      Who does that? How much did it cost? What percentage of their budget was earmarked for it?

    Sir Anthony is such a pain and naysayer. The professional archeologists like Phil and Matt dig and explain what the trenches are showing, but the amateur archaeologist Tony shows truly why he will never be anything more than an amateur. Professionals know that not every dig is going to produce glorious finds. Phil has shown beautiful cut stones that come from a wonderful building that has been demolished with walls rubbed out. In past times, when they tore down stone structures, the large and decorative stones were removed and used in other structures which are possibly walls/foundations in today's homes. Tony shows disrespect as he just drops down into working trenches which moved evidence in the trenches. Glad in 2022 that Tony will not be part of the program.

    When I heard that Channel 4 had cancelled Time Team, one of my all time favourite shows, I was horrified, even when Mick Aston had announced he had quit the show I still thought it a terrible decision. Having watched this episode though I have completely reversed that opinion. This episode is just dreadful, the archaeology content is minimal, the two new presenters in particular are awful and totally detract from the show. Why did he spend all that time hacking plaster off that woman's wall? What was that ever going to achieve even if it was a medieval wall (which I still think was questionable)? Mick, Tony and even Phil seemed deflated and even disinterested throughout. Very poor.

      I don't think the new people every really had a chance to "fit in" to the team. After Robin died, they brought in Sam Houston, but I think they wanted more than just history, so he started doing performance art as well. I think that may have detracted; at least it did for me. Loved what he brought up to that point in each episode. Then they lost Stewart Ainsworth, and I don't think that Alex Langsworth ever really fulfilled that role well. I also think that they totally underutilized Stewart's skillset. How many times when on the brink of archaeology failure did Stewart save the day? Maybe they did that for dramatic effect?

    What is with the obsession regarding Robin Hood? It is known that no such person existed, and neither did Loxley. Rather, it is believed he was a villain from Wetherby, Yorkshire, or some such place, for whom there is a record to purchase chains, etc., to keep him in custody. His name was Robert Hood.

    • @ianbrooke6342
      @ianbrooke6342 9 років тому +5

      Wotdermatter Lack of evidence is not the same as evidence of lack. There is no proof he existed, just theory, but you can't prove a negative, so it cannot be known he didn't exist. The is no concrete evidence that a lot of historical 'figures' existed, just lots of cenjecture (for example King Arthur) but that doesn't detract from their popularity, similarly Robin Hood.

      Such a good reply! Sometimes stories and legend have partial basis in fact or distorted history, and people are interested in piecing together where folklore comes from. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as people are willing to accept that things might not be as their preconceptions have led them to think.

      1st. Robin is used to this day as a nick name for Robert. 2. Loxley is actually Lockesly, which was a town in England and when you check further, Robin Hood was called Robert De Lockesly, which simply means Robert of Lockesly. There is in existence a court record from 1245 showing where 1 Robert De Lockesly appeared before the court. There is reason to believe that Hood came from Robehod. This was a title that was given to someone who was declared Outlaw.

There is no historical record of Robin Hood regardless of whether people twist the facts and are nicknames or alternative names such as Jack for John, etc. I have checked the names out using historical records and that is how I know. When in the Royal Navy, I was stationed at Wetherby and checked there. That is how I came to find Robert not Robin and he never was at Nottingham.
