    When the new owners of a house in Blythburgh in Suffolk explored their potting shed they were shocked to discover a cupboard full of human skulls. Could these remains have something to do with the superb ruins of a medieval priory that has lain hidden for years? The priory fell into disuse before Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, and may contain the remains of a 7th century Saxon King, Anna. But despite digging several trenches in the back garden, the team struggle to make sense of it all. They are joined by historian Sam Newton.

As a uk residents it's always amazing how much history we live on. our housing estate is on an old army depo for ww1+2 and was then used to house italian pows. But at the same time the history of your lands across the pond intrest us. From dinosaurs found in the deserts to indians in the grand canyon to gettysburg civil war or abandoned mines.

      I’ve often thought about some sort of travel exchange. It probably already exists in some form...but on my trips abroad I’ve always wanted to stay longer than the usual 10-12 days but the cost of accommodation doesn’t allow it. If it were possible to exchange residences with someone for a month, I stay in someones home, they stay in mine, we both get a significantly less expensive experience in a different country... maybe I’m being naive

    Do you ever do follow ups? If I were a landowner I wouldn't want to fill in the trenches, but rather find some archeologists interested in continuing the dig. Obviously it could also be quite lucrative as a tourist site. Although I would assume proclamation of a historical site might mean forced donation to the government, I would hope most people would just want to KNOW... Has this happened in any of your earlier episodes, the continuation of your work?

    • @patriciamorton1068
      @patriciamorton1068 3 роки тому +1

      I know I'm from the USA. That being said, if taking government money for historical sites, it would mean turning over your rights to do what you want with the land and even ownership of it. Also, opening up to archaeologists groups comes having to have some kind of insurance in case of injury. It sucks. I really love these shows and the history of it all. I guess there's only so much they can find out in the "three" days they show us. I suppose it's up to the landowner if it continues. Also, isn't there a law about not being able to keep artifacts found on your land? (Possibly get some sort of compensation for them though, but cannot keep them?)

    • @willisgemutlich2608
      @willisgemutlich2608 3 роки тому

      @@patriciamorton1068 yes agreed, if there's anything I DO know it's that all of these factors will vary, county by county, province by province, country by country, and even year by year across all boards giving enough crazy red tape to drown us all... And like I said Government seizure of historical property or even just unending moratorium of use would be highly probable.. I guess they call it "scheduling" there... I just wonder if anyone that's been on the show throughout the years, when we caught a tiny glimpse, has continued digging. I would love to watch a "10 years later" type of thing and see if someone said, "I'm not plowing my potato field anymore, find the rest of the priory and graveyard and let's see what happens." It's very sad to me that when huge projects like subways or other tunnels reveal ancient archeology, they only stop for a bit and then seem to typically keep grinding away the past because they only have the plan and permits to do what they're doing where and when they're doing it. the propensity seems to be that if you see something like a human skull, hide it and keep going... we can't afford to stall "the project". it's funny how that works. "we don't have time" to find out what happened 5000 years ago, we have a month and a half to get this done... really? really sad. I would just love to see tony and team revisit ANYWHERE they've been where more research has been done, and at a slow steady pace, even if what they found wasn't monumental.

      The government (local or central) does not take over archaeological sites in the UK. Even if they wanted to, there are just too many. There was public indignation when the only Roman building left in Scotland was demolished by its owner early in the 18th century, and later when the owner of Shakespeare's mansion in Stratford had it knocked down because he was annoyed by the sightseers coming to his door. Much later in the 19th century we started to get laws preventing destruction of ancient monuments officially recognised as such.

      Some of the Time Team Specials revisit sites. A few revisits (not necessarily specials) I can think of are Athelney, Turkdean, and Dinnington. In terms of continued excavation at sites generally, sometimes what's been found during the Time Team dig has been enough for more local archaeologists to secure funding for further investigation, and sometimes they went to sites already being excavated but with a lot more resources to really help advance the understanding of the archaeology there.
