Time Team S15-E01 Hunting King Harold, Portskewett, South Wales

  • Harold's Field in Portskewett, Monmouthshire, has long been rumoured (and referenced in The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles) as a site where Harold Godwinson, later to become King Harold, built a hunting lodge in 1065 after defeating the Welsh.
    Before that, this same hill may have been the location of a Welsh royal palace reported as having been built in the 6th century. As if that isn't enough, pottery finds nearby suggest the hill may also have been utilised in Roman times too.
    The Time Team have three days to unearth the secrets of Harold's Field.

    I love that this episode runs out the entire credits sequence so you can see Mick's university and Phil's company and all the affiliations of the specialists like Helen and Stewart. Victor's drawings and watercolours evidently helped Tony explain to the villagers the significance of the finds in their scheduled fields.

    Tony is a marvelous host. The experts sometimes take it for granted we know what the significance of the finds are (like truly brilliant people do), yet Tony draws more information out of them with careful questions and humor. He's respectful without horning in (hear that, American "journalists"?) What a pleasure to spend time with these intelligent people who work methodically for answers, instead of ranting speculation. I love this show. I've been lucky enough to spend some time in Great Britain, and the antiquity there reminds us we're just cheeky upstarts across the pond.

      The 14,500 year old human remains they found here in Florida say otherwise. So do the Norse ruins in Newfoundland. In fact, if you stepped back from your Euro-centric point of view, you'd see that the Americas have a history that is just as rich as that of any European country.

      Scott Bentley go online and search for archeology vacations! They have people with an interest help with the digs. Also, in Arizona I bet there's plenty going on that you might not be aware of… Maybe search that too, even ask the universities if they know of programs where amateurs/the general public can be involved.
      Archeology was my first love, as a little kid. Like you, I didn't go into that field. Now I'm later in life with aches and pains that would prevent me from doing that, so I say to you: go for it! 🙂

      It exploratory archaeology, 3 days is enough to determine if a site has potential for a larger dig. Or in some cases such as sites that were scheduled without a dig to determine if it should be scheduled or not. This is standard procedure when funds are tight, you need to know whether it's worth the $$$ and time to dig, especially in a place where you have so much history and so many sites.

      the easy answer is because this is television and three days already costs a fortune - the point isn’t to do all the archeology they could at each location but to do an initial dig and evaluation leaving the more in-depth archeology for others -

      @Allington Marakan To be fair when I see archaeologists use a metal detector its usually something from the 80s-90s and I've never seen them use a DD (Double Depth) coil on one.

    • @welshmansam61
      @welshmansam61 4 роки тому

      @Allington Marakan I know the video is pretty old, but I mean in general when I see archaeology videos they are usually using old or cheap equiptment which have worse depth than some of the things released in the last 10 years.
      Having said that, more and more people are taking up metal detecting as a hobby so it could explain why they have developed so much in recent years.
