Just discovered this awesome Time Team series and can't stop watching. I love history and when you add in such a perfect blend of passionate professionals you create the most entertaining way to learn! Thanks for sharing.
I love that this episode runs out the entire credits sequence so you can see Mick's university and Phil's company and all the affiliations of the specialists like Helen and Stewart. Victor's drawings and watercolours evidently helped Tony explain to the villagers the significance of the finds in their scheduled fields.
I remember seeing this dig take place as I live a few minutes from here. Caerwent village also has alot of ruins still standing. Thank you to everyone who works on uncovering the mysteries of our past. The pride we feel truly is indescribable.
@@gmg9010 there are endless ruins scattered all over the country/world. In some places you can just look over a field and see the change in the grass. We have a pub that's grounds run along a wall that god only knows how long it's been standing. We have a wood called Slade's wood which used to have huge thick trees trunks that had landed fighter pilots initials carved in to it. At the site is also some soft of stones ruin, all the same stone around the area.

Artifacts lost in raids ie Egypt, is just devastating to our history. Atlantis and all sunken cities, I wonder what world will be left in a few hundred years and what will lay beneath the seas then.
Tony is a marvelous host. The experts sometimes take it for granted we know what the significance of the finds are (like truly brilliant people do), yet Tony draws more information out of them with careful questions and humor. He's respectful without horning in (hear that, American "journalists"?) What a pleasure to spend time with these intelligent people who work methodically for answers, instead of ranting speculation. I love this show. I've been lucky enough to spend some time in Great Britain, and the antiquity there reminds us we're just cheeky upstarts across the pond.
The 14,500 year old human remains they found here in Florida say otherwise. So do the Norse ruins in Newfoundland. In fact, if you stepped back from your Euro-centric point of view, you'd see that the Americas have a history that is just as rich as that of any European country.
I've watched every episode beginning to end and now on series 15 for the second time and never knew Stuart was with English Heritage. That man is a savant.
The field being a scheduled monument since 1920's was a blessing in disguise. It protected the site against from the surrounding housing from being built on it, ruining any archaeology that remained.
This show is an incredible insight into the world of the ancients of northern europe and the roman empire. If only they had the funding to still have live episodes and not just specials, now and again!
I am just glad I can watch episodes on UA-cam. I never knew Time Team existed as I live in the U.S. The episodes are riveting.(Minus a couple). They even did a couple of episodes in America, The Wild West and Custer's last stand. It's a shame after 20 years it was canceled but it must have cost a fortune to do this series.
it collapsed because the damned tv company changed the format, brought in 'new blood' and Mick Aston left as the seriousness was being taken away and 'new blood' brought it. Idiots, they ruined a wonderful programme. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, should be nailed on these producers walls.
One of the best episodes. They are clever to analyse the field and surrounding area and come to the conclusions that they do. All team work and experience. Excellent stuff.
I've been watching this show for a few months now starting at the beginning. My ancestors are from Shropshire and I'm fascinated with history. I had thought about getting into archaeology when I went to college but regrettably didn't. Hopefully someday I may be able to get to visit my homeland. For now I'm stuck in Arizona. This is one of my favorite episodes.
Scott Bentley go online and search for archeology vacations! They have people with an interest help with the digs. Also, in Arizona I bet there's plenty going on that you might not be aware of… Maybe search that too, even ask the universities if they know of programs where amateurs/the general public can be involved. Archeology was my first love, as a little kid. Like you, I didn't go into that field. Now I'm later in life with aches and pains that would prevent me from doing that, so I say to you: go for it! 🙂

@@juliehenry6421 yeah, but literally all of their parts are made by FMC. My granddad had me rebuilding hit-and-miss engines, or hiss-pops as they're sometimes called, as a kid. We actually found the actual water pump engine from The Yearling in a crate at some estate sale years ago. After a full refurbishment, we sold it for about $20k, to a fellow collector. We also had a few dozen steel wheeled Farm-All tractors, and a ridiculous collection of International Cub Cadet lawn tractors from the mid 1900's. Granddad passed away almost 15 years ago, and we're STILL selling bits of his collection.
I love the fact that the locals brought their dogs along. Also, no one in their right mind would consider King Harold Godwinsson a loser. He won far more than he lost.

Concur! I felt exactly the same way. Harold led his army on a forced march from London to Yorskshire, defeated one invading army, then wheeled around and made it clear down to Hastings in a month and came within an arrow shot, as it were, of defeating another invader. Gratifying to see a younger person taking an interest in this and coming up with their own analysis.

Paul Hodder yeah you’re right there, it got converted into a film studio and was used in a BBC drama programme about Jason from Greek Mythology (the producers messed up though because apparently Ancient Greece had modern brick walls 😂) and it’s been used for Doctor Who many times too! You
Always a good idea to watch the very first episode from the first series then follow it through. You'll find that any questions that you have about Time Team will have been both asked, and answered for you.
the easy answer is because this is television and three days already costs a fortune - the point isn’t to do all the archeology they could at each location but to do an initial dig and evaluation leaving the more in-depth archeology for others -
@Allington Marakan To be fair when I see archaeologists use a metal detector its usually something from the 80s-90s and I've never seen them use a DD (Double Depth) coil on one.
@Allington Marakan I know the video is pretty old, but I mean in general when I see archaeology videos they are usually using old or cheap equiptment which have worse depth than some of the things released in the last 10 years. Having said that, more and more people are taking up metal detecting as a hobby so it could explain why they have developed so much in recent years.
It exploratory archaeology, 3 days is enough to determine if a site has potential for a larger dig. Or in some cases such as sites that were scheduled without a dig to determine if it should be scheduled or not. This is standard procedure when funds are tight, you need to know whether it's worth the $$$ and time to dig, especially in a place where you have so much history and so many sites.
I love Phil Harding...he and Mick make the show....however, if you want to find Phil, just find a pretty young archaeologist with a nice pair, he will be there...😊...
I'm trying to correct information on IMDb (plot summaries do not agree with the listings here) , but since I don't have the DVDs I can't be sure if they've got it wrong, or if RZ has identified series 15 episodes incorrectly. Can anyone advise?
The Wikipedia listing shows the original Channel 4 broadcast order/dates for the UK. When shown on other networks in other countries, the order may have been different.
I've always thought Sam should have been an incarnation of the Doctor. (He has the look for it.) Probably the one right after Tom Baker (Bless him!) I wonder if he, (Sam) has ever been asked about this or been approached By the producers of Dr. Who about it. It would be fascinating to hear the answer.
Does anyone know what 'privileges' the guy that lived in this house had? Timber boot? Hay boot? Fire boot? I used captions and still couldn't tell what he was saying.
Timber to build =Timber boot Hay for feeding live stock = hay boot And the right to cut types of trees to use for firewood = fire boot I hope that helps most normal people didn't have those rights.
They put everything back after they record it for more archeologists to find a hundred years from now. A few pieces are donated to local museums for dating and who put it there ,lifestyle and history of the area. Very cool I think.
In hindsight, I'm surprised that a thin scatter of stone artifacts doesn't show up at virtually every dig. Unless they have been buried by sediment they should be there.
This show is addictive,love to watch this before bedtime and dream of another time.

Why do they always have only three days? Seems rather brief to undertake an archaeological excavation.
+fishhead06 Time Team only do general overviews of sites. After they leave, the 'real' archeologists come and build upon what Time Team learned.

lol all the springs dried up with the severin tunnel .. more like the changed the water table with the tunnel and made them move elsewhere ....
He didn't miss any of them. Even when he was injured. One episode he was brought to the site in an ambulance. He couldn't dig but he was there.

It exploratory archaeology, 3 days is enough to determine if a site has potential for a larger dig. Or in some cases such as sites that were scheduled without a dig to determine if it should be scheduled or not. This is standard procedure when funds are tight, you need to know whether it's worth the $$$ and time to dig, especially in a place where you have so much history and so many sites.

The Wikipedia listing shows the original Channel 4 broadcast order/dates for the UK. When shown on other networks in other countries, the order may have been different.

I've always thought Sam should have been an incarnation of the Doctor. (He has the look for it.) Probably the one right after Tom Baker (Bless him!) Does anyone know what 'privileges' the guy that lived in this house had? Timber boot? Hay boot? Fire boot? I used captions and still couldn't tell what he was saying.
Timber to build =Timber boot
Hay for feeding live stock = hay boot
And the right to cut types of trees to use for firewood = fire boot

What happens to the sites after the Time Team moves on?
They put everything back after they record it for more archeologists to find a hundred years from now. A few pieces are donated to local museums for dating and who put it there ,lifestyle and history of the area. Very cool I think.

In hindsight, I'm surprised that a thin scatter of stone artifacts doesn't show up at virtually every dig. Unless they have been buried by sediment they should be there.
