    I really enjoy your characterful narration, and the depth of thought you put into setting up the reasons for the battle. In this report, I appreciated that you slowed your narration down a bit, including pauses, as some of your other reports (e.g., Germanic tribes vs newly-trained Romans) are a bit fast-paced and hard to follow from audio alone. Keep up the great work!

    Great battle report. I like the 8 minute version, rather than trying to watch an hour+ of someone else's HC game.

      Thanks, although that was a bit short for my liking. I'm trying to hit a mid-point with my subsequent game.

    Great video! Minor lighting and camera angle issues aside, it's really cool to see such a succinct and excitingly narrated demo of a historical tt system.

    Very nice battle report! I have not played Hail Caesar and looking forward to it when I get the Greeks and Romans painted. It seems like the rules are easy to learn for someone who has yet to play a historical game. Thank you for sharing this. Be Well. 👍👍

      Hail Caesar is a very flexible set of rules that's good to have in your arsenal, because it fits with just about any basing style.

    This was your first battle report I've watched, looking for Hail Caesar to learn more about the game. While I enjoyed the summary of the battle in less than 8 minutes, I'd be also interested in the system behind the events - for example, why were the troops delayed in the beginning, or how did they overwhelm the phalanx, things like that. However, I'd understand if might be less interesting for veteran players.

      Hail Caesar uses a leadership check to command units into movement. If the command check fails (typically rolling a 9 or higher on 2d6), the units don't move and no more orders for that division can be issued. It is very common for divisions to "stall" for a round or two early in the game. Sounds horrible, but it can make for some late game heroics when they finally arrive.
      As with most systems, getting flanked adds penalties in combat. And a victorious unit can "Sweeping Advance" to fight twice in the same turn. The whole battle line can be rolled up in a single turn!

    • @Shieldwall100
      @Shieldwall100  Рік тому

      As explained by Rich N, Hail Caesar has variable movement based upon a command roll a leader issues to units or groups of units. The better the roll, the more they can do, however you must specify all of your intended actions prior to rolling the test. Sometimes you fail altogether, and the unit/division doesn't act at all- it's a very quick and effective way to represent the fog of war.
      The main thing that differentiates a phalanx from other heavy infantry is that they can be defeated by a small margin in combat and count the result as a draw as opposed to a loss. Therefore they either stick around for longer, or they lose by lots and are thus more likely to break altogether.
