I remember enjoying the letter columns. The letters and replies were respectful, articulate, and often humorous. I haven’t read comics in decades, but I wonder if they have letter columns in today’s comics, and if so, are they as respectful and articulate as they used to be.
@@dlee645 DC doesn't have them anymore, which is a shame. I know The Amazing Spider-Man does, but the few other Marvel comics I read don't, so I don't know whether Spidey's the only one who gets that treatment.
The first time I saw this Catwoman costume was in Batman The Brave and the Bold and it’s introduction in the series was funny, because Catwoman literally says something along the lines of “ I got a new costume just to impress Batman! Why are you here Plastic man!” And then she starts angrily wiping a Plastic man that was dressed as Batman.
I love the idea of superheroes/villains changing their costumes for special occasions or to try and seduce people as if they were just normal, everyday clothes lol.
Hey Sasha, if you like weird Golden Age comics, I high recommend Fantomah. She's been cited as the first female superhero to appear in comics and was created by Fletcher Hanks, which means her stories tend to be bizarre and dark. She's definitely a character who, in my opinion, deserves to make a comeback.
As much as I like Sasha's silver age coverage I too would love more golden age coverage. As for Fantomah, I'm glad she gets that credit, but when reading her stuff I don't think I would call her a superhero. I love her though
Not gonna lie, I actually dig the look for it's era. The big mask and cat eyes are pretty freaky, and make her look like an actual villain... or B'Wanna Beast. I get the hate though, it's drastic as all hell, and the body suits are iconic, but don't know... I think it's neat. (You make my costume research A LOT easier, might as well just site you as source, a way better wikipedia lol)
the purple dress and the 90's purple 'boob sock' outfit are my 2 fave looks for cat woman. the dress is classic and elegant. while the 90's suit is the first costume I ever saw her in so I have an nostalgic attachment to it.
I like that one of the letters mentioned Neal Adams' cover, because he fixes the two problems with Robbins' costume by hiding the tail and toning down the creepy eyes.
The purrrrfect costume review I’ve been waiting for. This was the Catwoman I grew up with, so I too have a soft spot for this very specific get-up. Keep going with the costume deep dives, AND I strongly support your wish that reprints include the letter columns. These columns were the social media barometer of its time.
I'm so with you there with the social media barometer of letter columns! I remember in the early 90s how worried fans were for Illyana when she was sick with the Legacy Virus and over multiple issues so many people threatened to quit reading X-Men if she died. I'd just gotten into reading comics at the time and had jumped into the Legacy Virus story mid-arc so I had no idea what was going on, but I did understand how loved she was by the fandom from those letters. I never would've gotten that without the letter columns and future generations will miss that too if the columns are left out of reprints.
I also remember Mego released an action figure of Catwoman in this version of the costume in the early 1970's. But I prefer the purple and black costumes.
I was SO happy when I found out about this costume. I grew up watching reruns of the 60s show, and I had a few comics with her in them from the 80s... I also had the Mego Catwoman, and wondered where the HELL that costume came from! It only took 20 years and meeting my now husband and his large comic collection to figure it out.
I had that Mego action figure, but I actually never saw a comics story where she wore it. So thanks for filling me in on those, Sasha. Also: I'm absolutely with you on the lettercols.
Catwoman wore that costume in an issue of the Brave and the Bold. She was also a UN ambassador from some country or another. Years since I read that one.
LOL Yeah, I had that Catwoman figure. The thing I hated the most was the vinyl "gloves" (I hated them on Batman and Robin, too, truth be told). Yeah, Mego was (and is again) a mixed bag. Up side - they had the license to both DC and Marvel and were willing to do as many characters as they could. Down side - they tended to cheap out, reuse costumes (see Gorn/Klingon/Planet of the Apes all sharing the same top). So, really, we're kind of lucky Catwoman turned out as well as she did.
I think it's fine. It's okay. The mask grows on ya(maybe the most interesting aspect). Only issue is that it is a pretty drastic shift design wise where that letter was right. It could be a totally new character. It wasn't a slow evolution from any of her previous or well known outfits. Or her usual design sense of some skin tight cat suit thing, or the purple dress to purple catsuit thing.
I have a great affinity for this costume, for I was in 1st grade when the Mego figures came out, that era's Cabbage Patch dolls or Tickle Me Elmo, and I also had a Batman jigsaw puzzle with Selena in this garb. So, it takes me right back to my childhood. I love Pirate Catwoman.
Sasha !.. will you do a retrospective of Wonder Woman’s costumes? Particularly those that changed slightly but a couple times over the silver age , especially when Ross Andru was drawing the book? 🙏♥️.. thanks again for another puuuuurrrfect episode 🙃😍
I've been trying to gather a database of all of Catwoman's outfits and you have been such a huge help! Love all the Catwoman love you give too! Mini edit: Eartha Kitt as Catwoman with her special necklace, Michelle Pfeiffer's stitched outfit, TAS's Grey outfit with belt, and the purple and green double slit dress are my faves in that order. Love all of them though! Also, yes always include the letters! I loved those as a kid. My friends and I wrote in all the time. Sometimes we'd chat over who got printed and in what comics that month! (Send some art with your letter. The staff always loves this. They appreciate it more than you know! It doesn't matter if it's "bad", they truly like to hear from you...unless you're being a huge jerk.)
2:32 Y'know, this raises the thorny question of what to name your new business when starting up in Gotham. You're pretty much asking for it if you choose anything that's going to attract the attention of one of the town's super-loons, so nothing connected with cats, bats, hats, birds, plants, alligators, riddles, puzzles or games, jokes, pranks, or comedy, puppets, fire, ice, the number two, anything scary, Mexican wrestlers, psychiatry, pretty much any holiday, calendars, clocks, and the list goes on. Office supply stores get raided by the Eraser and restaurants are plagued by the Condiment King. Even an accounting firm would probably have some nitwit show up eventually. "Beware Gotham, for I am - the Actuary! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!" And then he gets in a brawl with the Crimson Auditor ("You're in the red now, Batman!") over who's going to rob the place and they wind up wrecking reception. Maybe you lean into the problem and make it work for you instead? "Deathtraps, Incorporated" will at least get you some business before the inevitable catastrophe. It's got a nice ring to it, anyway.
Even it the animated movies archive criminals are aware that Catwoman changes costumes often. See,Catwoman:Hunted. I think That costume is sexy.. i only say thepirate Catwoman costume in a Brave and Bold comic.
I kinda like the look of it and I could see a IRL costume of it looking nice, but it's not a favorite Catwoman look to me. I get why it's unpopular: the mask just didn't look cat like enough. It looks more demon than feline with the hellish red with yellow eyes. If the mask were more feline the look would work cause the outfit is nice albeit a bit pirate-like. I like it much more on the golden age character whose outfit you showed that rocked the look better. Imagine this look with green eyes and a black (and/or dark purple if you want to incorporate the colors Selina favors) cat-shaped mask like her iconic one.
It’s my first time seeing it, and I like it. It looks a lot more fun than most of her other costumes. I could do without the slit pupils with yellow sclera, that feels like it’s going a bit too hard, but overall it’s a good look, and Selina always looks good in short hair.
I understand your feelings about the letter columns. I have a omnibus of Daredevil from the 60s and the letters were included and fascinating like you said about the culture at the time. There were discussions about Matt and his costume and the like. But I haven't come across any other collections with letters in them. Which is sad because I would have really liked to know people's thoughts about certain issues and the shifting characterization (or costume like the armored one in the 90s) instead of just hearing that people did or did not like it.
As with so many things, I feel there is an element of imprinting from the first costume you knew. For me, that's the 60s TV spangly catsuit (in reruns - I'm not that old!) which inspired the 90(?) film catsuit.
Compared to the unfitting green costume, this one is closer to the Michelle Pfeiffer costume, BTAS costume, and some of the newer comic costumes. Still, I can't bring myself to say it's a favorite of mine. Heck, I prefer the purple bronze age costume that replaced it. That one is decently nice.
Dammit, now I want a supervillain named the Iguana whose whole schtick is shedding their costume's tail which then goes on to explode, autonomously entangle you or gas you or something. :)
Yeah, the original Black Cat was pretty cool. The idea behind her was that she was a professional stunt woman who learned all her skills from actors, stuntmen, and other talented professional within the movie industry. It's actually a really cool way to give your hero a bunch of skills in an unconventional way. She had a peppy personality and seemed to enjoy adventure. The down side to her comics is that she lacks motivation to crime fight. She just... kinda does. Occasionally it's linked to her day job, some trouble at the studio that she has to solve, but more than not it's just some random crime she suddenly decides to stop because "why not". The character went to War at one point, and also transitioned into Western Comics with little to no explanation (it's believed her western stories were films she was in). Black Cat also did something extremely cool in that in some pages it actually taught REAL judo moves for self-defense. It's because of this that the comics code wanted to put an end to the series, but in all honestly the book was losing steam by then. Having a character with no motivation kinda kills any drama or opportunities for stories.
Marvel had a habit of re-using the names of Golden Age superheroes for their own characters. Black Cat, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Quicksilver. Any others I'm missing? I love reading letter columns too. It's fun to see how reader expectations and reactions have changed in some ways and stayed the same in others over the years.
When I started reading comics in the early 90's Catwoman was wearing her grey body suit with tail. Even at the time I found it a bit boring. Then I saw this costume in an old issue I grabbed at a flea market and felt cheated out of having an interesting Selina in the (then) modern era. Thanks a lot, Frank Miller. Sigh, what could have been.
I read in the introduction to a TPB book collecting the best Catwoman stories after the release of the second Batman Movie that this comic was inspired by Tina Turner and the Ikest that were popular at the time it was released.
Look folks, I've seen that monstrosity they dressed her in for the Guardian of Gotham elseworlds story. I'd honestly take this costume over the deeply icky way many artists draw Selina NOW. I don't get what the big deal is.
@@ProjektTaku Look man, at leas they're not drawing her like a porn star that forgot what book she's in. Older artists didn't have some of the horrible leeway modern ones do.
As always, loved your video on the Black Cat based Catwoman costume and your inclusion of Black Cat's history. I am with you on Mego's figure.......... EEEEEEEKKKKKKKK. I would like to see you cover the Earth 1 Batwoman becoming Cat Man's version of Catwoman in a video soon. That was my first experience with any version of Catwoman, and I loved the costume she wore.
It's kinda funny that The Golden Age Black Cat influenced Catwoman's Bronze Age costume, both work differant sides of the law plus that outfit screams 70's. I guess Alfred Harvey and Al Gabriele were way ahead of their time when created the Black Cat.
Not a fan of short-haired Catwoman. I liked the homage to the original Black Cat costume, have a number of her late 40s, early 50s issues. Lee Elias drew her wonderfully. You should do a deeper dive into the original Black Cat someday, Hollywood Movie Star and Stuntwoman turned crimefighter. And she gets her own sidekick near the very end, a boy named Kitten or sometimes Kit. The thing I hated about this Catwoman costume here is her tail. For some reason, I hate tails on costumes unless they are actually functional. If I was the superhero facing a costumed tailed villain, I would be pulling on it to knock them off balance or prevent them from running away. Now if it was functional like coming off when pulled to throw the hero off balance or it was electrified, I would probably be more accepting. This being the Silver Age, they probably couldn't have someone pulling on a woman's tail for some reason. Letter pages are wonderful bits of history that should be shared in these reprints.
Wow. I remember Pete Sanderson's letter after all these years. Memory is a funny thing, no? When I was young, I didn't really like this costume (or this issue), but the bright green costume was worse. Frank Robbins was an interesting artist. At the time, I was an aspiring artist and couldn't see anything appealing in his work -- but later on, I came to appreciate Robbins. I also learned to appreciate Milt Caniff, who was clearly his inspiration.
MORE CATWOMAN CONTENT! I hate how the cartoons really ignore her and the movies her characteristic is really 2D. The new comics really made her weak and docile. She deserves better! #JusticeForCatwoman
Two notes: 6:00 Wow, Sasha coming after Selena's Henchmen costumes. I always loved that look, at least it wasn't solid black shirt with "Pigeon" or "Sparrow" 11:40 That Mego Catwoman looks more like wrestler Sheri Martell than Catwoman, lol
I'm so excited. I actually had this issue. I did like the newer costume more than the infamous purple dress and green cape which, I'm sorry, must have been really difficult to do stealthy cat crimes in. I'd be tripping and tangled in all that flapping cloth. Also, as a person who heads to the comments section of every video, gotta share my love for it's predecessor, the letters column.
“ Hate that Costume…Not My Catwoman “ Lol …Wonder if this gave Frank Tieri & Jimmy Palmiotti inspiration for The Gang of Harleys 🤔 Good thing for DC that this issue did not come out in 2020, with those Exercise Machines , or they may have gotten as Big a Backlash as Peloton got for it’s Christmas Commercial where the Husband buys His Wife the Stationary Bike for Christmas, & Peloton gets accused of Body Shaming 🤷🏾♂️ Any Way Purple Boob Socks , Black Cat Suit, & Purple Dress in that order IMO …Red Wig because of Your Girl Amanda’s 10yr Anniversary? …Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
This was the FIRST DC book I remember reading! I don't know where it came from but I found a battered copy of it in the spare bedroom somewhere in the early 70's. Not my first purchase... but definitely my first read.
Re Letters Columns: I get so upset when the official app or reprints exclude the letters but even more enraged when I can't find them in the fan scans online. But all the more motivation to collect the floppies over collected reprints. I love this outfit. It might be my favorite one. I hate the purple dress. It just seems so cumbersome and hard to do things in. Who wants a long flowing dress for a heist?? It would knock into everything and get caught on stuff
I never liked this costume. For me, Catwoman's "real" costume was always the purple dress. I grudgingly accepted the green costume as an attempt at being similar to the TV show, but this pirate/Black Cat costume never worked for me.
I remember the Black Cat Catwoman costume. I remember seeing this on the rack and thinking, they're trying to erase all traces of the tv series. Probably a good idea since there were 3 Catwomen over the movie and the series. The letters column was always interesting.
Honestly, I kinda like this outfit. I'd never seen it before this video, but I like it...Just ridiculous enough to be fun without being overly garish (in my opinion, at least).
When you said Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane I punched the air and yelled 'Yes!'. It was instinctive. I thought that costume looked familiar. I can't believe I didn't think of Black Cat. She appeared most recently in Dark Horse's Mystery Science Theatre 3000 mini series of a few years back. Which is well worth a look
My cousin had the Batman and Robin Mego dolls (They were Barbie doll size, not action figures. Action figures were invented by Kenner for Star Wars, because dolls would have required toy ships and play sets that would have been too big, and expensive. Although there were doll size characters as well, but they didn’t sell as well.) Anyway, he also had the Catwoman Mego doll, and I found it very confusing. Except for the tail, it looked nothing like a woman dressed like a cat.
Hey, Sasha. I have heard Black Cat is the first superheroine but also heard the same about Phantom Lady. And I have read different dates. Ever consider a video on this topic?
This is one of my favorite Catwoman costumes and there’s nothing pirate about it, the boots are a reference to Puss in Boots, which I think is really clever, I also love the color scheme with the sparingly used red accents
Wonderful, Thanks Sasha, well I did not realize that this costume was originated ..for most part.. by Golden Age Blackcat. I sure hope that we get a story on the late 70s cartoon Batman series. Catwoman costume, that was never seen in the comics. P.S. I wonder which costume Alvin and Theodore like the best.?? Lol
that's the 1970s Mego figure costume. if you want to shell out at least $30 or so there's probably a vintage Mego Catwoman (out of the box one) in Ok condition.
I love old-school lettercolumns and I wish that more collected editions included them. They really speak to the amateur Pope culture historian in me. Lettercolumns, Bullpen Bulletins, Publishorials, and vintage movie, toy, and comics merchandise ads are why I had a number of Bronze Age runs - reading copies, not "investment grade" copies - custom bound into hardback over the years. I see that one of the letters you quoted was from Peter Sanderson, who in the eighties was the primary writer for the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, THE MARVEL SAGA, and WHO'S WHO for DC Comics.
My goodness your love for the letters column is genuinely underestimated and unappreciated if it's impossible in your personal community that you created in your free channel or that built up over time I mean specifically now I have to admit when first looking at this outfit it is it is genuinely hard to take moment to really like it I mean it's definitely visually stunning regardless stunning for the good or stunning for the bad it's hard to be sure sometimes when first looking at something so shocking and eye catching that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing or a good thing shocking or the way that I'm putting it does not necessarily give it justice but I have to admit this 70's version of her outfit is bizarrely charming I think both of them were actually pretty interesting when I first saw it I many years ago in the mid 2000s looking at history points of her outfits of Catwoman I won't deny it I thought he was very ugly but after a while I thought it was very interesting and nice interesting contrast in a different sense like really going bold but honestly I thought it was ugly even I dare say catastrophe of a pun but I didn't think it was not interesting anyways when I first saw it but now the more I get older and the more I appreciate vintage or older fashions in different contrasts and how they are used especially for purely different ways to change up the outfit of Catwoman but no matter how weird unless they're really bad outfit that really just has all around bad taste even something shockingly different from all the other outfits and I don't think I'll fit is that ugly if I had to think of it as ugly I actually think it's actually very I'm trying to sound like I don't hate it I do find it tacky at times even a real ice were but when I really embrace for what it can be and what offers with the camping ridiculousness of the point of being a real catty bug get a bug eyes of the mask bag of ugly but only when the comics really make it harder for it to be like both especially if I don't know some of the crazy expressions are so out there that makes it hard to like or maybe a bad story but I overall actually really like and I find it charming I actually wouldn't mind drawing this and this is actually a really bold statement to go all that way with her especially when women looking extra pretty I mean any era of comics but especially a timer you probably could get away with some interesting thought provoking looks this is the era for it especially in the 70s and they really nailed it hard for unique and different well obviously there is a strong reference to the black cat but I mean for Selena AK Catwoman to truly own it as her own and I have to really think they both honored the black cat in the original and some honored weird way but on the other ways I think Catwoman actually really owned it in her own way made her own is what I mean it actually takes time to reinvent an outfit especially for a villain but still holding unique coin of peculiarity of a beautifully bold outfit whether you find it ugly or beautiful or just down right fascinating in a weird way you're not sure how you feel about it you want to hate it but apart if you likes to hate it and a part of you actually like to see how unique it is I'm just how out there it is and appreciate that alone love it or hated that outfit is truly unique that is probably the truest statement you could possibly have and honestly I think it's easier to hate something than give something a chance especially in the more controversial era of opinions and believe me when looking at those dolls she looks better on paper she looks better on a magazine she looks better on TV even if give her 10 pounds or meet her taller but those dolls and that's coming from someone who makes doll clothing for hobby and down ouch my personal love prevention stuff is hurting especially for vintage dolls under the right circumstances I want to personally customize an outfit just for this Catwoman especially the injustice those outfits on those dolls do and I really don't like dissing sad attempts on dolls clothes Dad saying something those outfits on those dolls are the real stinker and I do feel bad for saying that not for the outfit in the comic it's his own amazing unique awkwardness both good or bad tasteful or not I am glad to bring blabbering about that darn outfits but to be fair it's one of those ones that give you mileage I really don't know what to think of it I also have to say real quick the green outfit was not actually a bad rendition of it but I think turning it purple brown albeit possibly not the best choice even yellow maybe not yellow heck even turning into a cream white or the street of white would have been unusual twist maybe even made her look nice sweet and innocent I think I would have actually made a very unusual twist of don't judge a book by its character because you might think oh sweet looking kitty cat of the lady then turns around and she's actually a villain would have been answering very interesting thing the other outfit regardless of that weird lizard like pattern though I have to admit that was very unique and interesting aesthetic to it though the insistent level of her wanting to marry Batman it's barely bonkers and that's coming from a girl who loves watching Superman girlfriend comics videos testing something to a certain level but you're not going to be seeing Louis going into the crazy house with her extreme crazy antics to get superman to marry her I think that last comment was a bit harsh on both Louis and Catwoman but to be fair as much as I think the cat puns are really silly and kind of stupid I rather her go for her with the cat pans then constantly go to the moronic levels of trying to get Batman's marry her it's one thing to play on jealousy it's another to make her kind of lose it over something really dumb I mean having your heart's desire get the better of you is not necessarily good help or healthy it's important to follow them but the person you really like is not going to reciprocate your feelings in any way or other minor or even if they did the way that you're acting is making them run away is possible considering that she's in love with the dark Knight that's saying something he knows he's not insane himself by the way that she's acting even if he liked her back is a perfectly level understandably hard nope and yes I just called Batman crazy pretty bonkers but she's taking it to the next level with her jealousy here everyone's crazy If my grandma looks bad I'm sorry if my writing looks bad altogether my typing just spell check is both making things hard for me to write this and I am just terrible at remembering punctuations
Not my favorite cat-costume but way better then the green jumpsuit. Selina was wearing the pirate costume when she face Bats and WW in B&B #131. She does something in that story a good 15 years before the Joker tries it in the infamous Death in the Family story.
My second ever Batman comic was 'Batman' #259 which featured Selina in this costume. It also had a "history of Catwoman costumes" one page feature in it. (100 pages for $0.50 - there was filler). So I saw the green scales costume there. And it said, point blank, that the green costume was based on the live action TV show costume. Which I thought was stupid. Okay, I was only six, but I thought her then current costume, being black and shiny, looked more like the Catwoman I knew from TV. Even now, when I look at the green costume, I can see how they were drawing Julie Newmar's costume, but the coloring was so far off that it just didn't work. What made that costume work for Catwoman was Julie Newmar's presence, grace, sensuality, and humour. (It was just kind of there on Lee Meriwether. It might have worked on Eartha Kitt if Kitt had a]been allowed to vamp and b] been given better scripts.) I never realized the black & blue costume was from the -er- Batman and Robbins era. But borrowing from Linda (Black Cat) Turner's closet is an excellent choice. I've read a few stories of that Black Cat, and she was pretty sexy for a 1940s heroine. I'm surpised that my dad (who had bought #259 for me/us) didn't mention the resemblence. I do remember Dad talking about the Black Cat; he was of the opinion that DC had been ripping off the Black Cat when they created the Black Canary. The only thing on this Catwoman costume that didn't really work were the cats-eye lenses. If they had allowed her eyes to be visible most of the time, and the yellow cats-eyes part only becoming visible when she activated the night vision she'd have been better off. Still, I'd probably rate it as her 3rd best comic costume, after the purple dress and the Jim Balent era costume.
The costume looks alright to me, but that might just be because I have some distance to it. If I was born back in the day and that costume popped up in the comics I might be disheartened a bit, as there would be a big chance that this is the costume we are stuck with going forward, and there is no internet to amplify the complaints about the costume.
Thank you Sasha, I LOVE where our whims take us: an Adventure Supreme!!!!! Yeah, the industry is kinda dirty when it comes to I.P.s if a copyright lapses, oops new costume, or name for my character. With Cat Woman's costumes, being a child of the 70's we were exposed to all of them and I just chalked it up to her being "fickle" and just wanting variety in her wardrobe. There is a fine line to walk when writing a story, who to appeal to?...the whimsy or the hard boiled? PEACE dear Sister, and God bless. Oh, and since you stopped sleeping in your specs I haven't complimented you on any of those pairs, always Super Model Sharp Woman!!!!
An old comic without its letters column is like original Beavis & Butthead without the music videos. You're missing a lot. There were some people who got letters in comics repeatedly, til they were like familiar faces, and you half-expected to see them every time you got to the letters page (Uncle Elvis). And one of my proudest moments was getting a letter printed in Sensational She-Hulk (#14 I think). I felt like I had suddenly become a part of comics history. If I still had that issue, it would probably be in a frame on my wall (out of direct sunlight tho), and I would seriously consider paying you to make a video about the issue and reading my letter. That would be cool, uh-huh-huh (callback). But alas, my Golden Age has also passed, and that ship -- nay, that CATamaran has sailed.
Now I need a release of the Conan comics dealing with his pirate days and the Queen of the Black Coast storyline where pirate Catwoman replaces Belit as the love of his life. I mean Conan was called the "Lion" in it and Catwoman would be down for that.
Other than the tail I always thought it was the most practical costume before the more modern tighter fitting ones. The other ones, while stylish, were just not designed for a lady burglar.
If you make the costume retrospective a full on series with multiple superhero/ villain outfits. I heavily recommend doing one on Superman in the golden age(especially with the concept art behind it, the history behind it is really interesting). if not maybe Batman with how the batsuit evolved dirung the duration on the golden age?

Agreed. They're a lovely window into the mindset of past times, regardless of whether they're real or faked.

Fletcher Hanks’ superhero stories are like the worlds’ worst Tales from the Crypt episodes, lol. Real Old Testament “wrath of God” kinda affairs.
Really, really weird character.
I gotta say, if Catwoman's gonna be an unapologetic villain, then the yellow cat's-eyes mask is a good, sinister touch.

So Catwoman invented the mechanical bull? Do country bars know they owe her royalties?
Is it wrong I kinda like it?
Never
Yeah, I like it too!
I like it also
Not at all.
Not really. I personally don’t like it but that’s my personal opinion.
Loving all the Catwoman content. Would be interesting to see your take in that one Silver Age story where Kathy Kane briefly became Catwoman.
This costume reminds me of Huntress, which is fitting because of the fact that some version of Huntress is supposed to be Catwoman's daugher.
Andru & Esposito were just right for the original Metal Men, but I never liked their WW work.
Frank Robins and Irv Novak. The TRUE workhorses of Batman’s Bronze Age
Just a note that Black Cat is a pastiche of the pulp era Domino Lady. So it's turtles all the way down.
In alternating layers with the elephants, no doubt. :)
9:20 . lol i love that cat .
Not even 3 minutes in and Superman's girlfriend Lois Laine was mentioned - as expected. Love vid, love Catwoman's costume.
Looks like Doronjo not gonna lie.
I actually loved this costume very much. So much so I made several action figures of this variation of Selina.
Ever see that Japanese movie with the demon cat drawing. It reminds me of that. So that's actually kinda cool. But I like a demon look generally.
Well… I need a pirate look, I might steal her look and play copycat.
Mee…. Roarrrrr!!!! XD
@11:43 IIRC my Mego Batman and Robin figures had vinyl mittens for gloves, too 😢
Aquaman too.
Yes, I had an Aquaman Mego. Don't judge me.
Is this a playlist now? It feels like we're approaching playlist level of Catwoman Costumes
This costume rabbit hole is fun!
Personally, I think the tail is a problem as it would only be a hinderance in a fight the same way that capes are. Just ask Edna Mode.
Dammit, now I want a supervillain named the Iguana whose whole schtick is shedding their costume's tail which then goes on to explode, autonomously entangle you or gas you or something. :)
This was how Catwoman dressed when I was very young, Mego doll included, and has always been my alltime favourite. Love love love it.
I actually like the mask. Giving me slight Devilman vibes.
Love the costume. And it's time to bring it back. Yep. I said it.
bless you.
I like it, but LOVE the slight redesign from Brave and the Bold
Marvel had a habit of re-using the names of Golden Age superheroes for their own characters. Black Cat, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Quicksilver. Any others I'm missing?
I love reading letter columns too. It's fun to see how reader expectations and reactions have changed in some ways and stayed the same in others over the years.
Great Point, but Catwoman is DC 🖖🏾
When I started reading comics in the early 90's Catwoman was wearing her grey body suit with tail. Even at the time I found it a bit boring. Then I saw this costume in an old issue I grabbed at a flea market and felt cheated out of having an interesting Selina in the (then) modern era. Thanks a lot, Frank Miller. Sigh, what could have been.
Feel your pain.
I read in the introduction to a TPB book collecting the best Catwoman stories after the release of the second Batman Movie that this comic was inspired by Tina Turner and the Ikest that were popular at the time it was released.
I love this costume it showed. Another aspect of her many sides but the golden age costume will allways be my fav
Look folks, I've seen that monstrosity they dressed her in for the Guardian of Gotham elseworlds story. I'd honestly take this costume over the deeply icky way many artists draw Selina NOW. I don't get what the big deal is.
I don't mind it, but its defo alot of alot.
Could definitely do without the straps.
I love pretty much most of Catwomans Comics pre 2001, and this is one of my dark horse faves
It's kinda funny that The Golden Age Black Cat influenced Catwoman's Bronze Age costume, both work differant sides of the law plus that outfit screams 70's. I guess Alfred Harvey and Al Gabriele were way ahead of their time when created the Black Cat.
I know this costume from Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Scoobydoo
“Yellow eyes,by God she had yellow eyes!”😂
I think it actually looks really cool, especially the way it is drawn in the thumbnail, though I could do without the tail.
The Lee Elias Black Cat comics (I have issues 63 & 64) have one-page segments between stories with her demonstrating judo moves! Educational!
MORE CATWOMAN CONTENT! I hate how the cartoons really ignore her and the movies her characteristic is really 2D. The new comics really made her weak and docile. She deserves better! #JusticeForCatwoman
Two notes:
6:00 Wow, Sasha coming after Selena's Henchmen costumes. I always loved that look, at least it wasn't solid black shirt with "Pigeon" or "Sparrow"
11:40 That Mego Catwoman looks more like wrestler Sheri Martell than Catwoman, lol
Sorry Amanda’s Streamaversary 😎🖖🏾
i'd have thought that the one from the movie with Halle Berry would be the most-hated Catwoman costume :P
Lol that one has some stanch defenders, though probably cause Halle Berry is wearing it
@@CasuallyComics i DO admit that it has a nice "femme fatale superheroine" look. maybe not precisely _Catwoman_ , but it can definitely work ;)
I was always fond of the pirate look; then, again, I love Linda (Black Cat) Turner.too.
My preference is for the purple dress, followed closely by the body suit from the 60s TV show.
Good to see brave and the bold give some love to this costume!😻
Cue the music: "They had it coming..."
Honestly, I kinda like this outfit. I'd never seen it before this video, but I like it...Just ridiculous enough to be fun without being overly garish (in my opinion, at least).
"Witch on Wheels". I am intrigued. I do hope there will be an episode on that.
Heck yeah, Gwandanaland is great! I got a Ditko Question omnibus from them a while back
That letter is from Peter Sanderson the comics historian who worked with Mark Gruenwald on the Marvel Encyclopedia. Lol
I need to send this to him.
I’m actually pretty tempted to try and cosplay this costume
When you said Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane I punched the air and yelled 'Yes!'. It was instinctive.
I thought that costume looked familiar. I can't believe I didn't think of Black Cat. She appeared most recently in Dark Horse's Mystery Science Theatre 3000 mini series of a few years back. Which is well worth a look
I was always surprised that Catwoman didn’t get obsessed with kidnapping Katma Tui.
Sasha also didn't include the wave...Time to write a letter.
Most hated!? This one is my favorite!
Bless you, Sir. You're not alone.
I wonder how much Catwoman pays her henchmen. I hope it's more than a can of tuna every two weeks! 😂🤣
"Pope culture historian" is one of the best typos I've seen this year. I'm going to have to recommend it as a signature for a theologian I know. :)
I typed "pop-culture" but the misnamed "autocorrect" changed it, as it is wont to do.
My goodness your love for the letters column is genuinely underestimated and unappreciated if it's impossible in your personal community that you created in
your free channel or that built up over time I mean specifically now I have to admit when first looking at this outfit it is it is genuinely hard to take moment to really
like it I mean it's definitely visually stunning regardless stunning for the good or stunning for the bad it's hard to be sure sometimes when first looking at
something so shocking and eye catching that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing or a good thing shocking or the way that I'm putting it does not necessarily give it justice but I have to admit this 70's
version of her outfit is bizarrely charming I think both of them were actually pretty interesting when I first saw it I many years ago in the mid 2000s looking at history
points of her outfits of Catwoman I won't deny it I thought he was very ugly but after a while I thought it was very interesting and nice interesting contrast in a different sense like really going bold but honestly I thought it was ugly even I dare say
catastrophe of a pun but I didn't think it was not interesting anyways when I first saw it but now the more I get older and the more I appreciate vintage or older
fashions in different contrasts and how they are used especially for purely different ways to change up the outfit of Catwoman but no matter how weird
unless they're really bad outfit that really just has all around bad taste even something shockingly different from all the other outfits and I don't think I'll fit is that ugly if I had to think of it as ugly I
actually think it's actually very I'm trying to sound like I don't hate it I do find it tacky at times even a real ice were but when I really embrace for what it can be and what
offers with the camping ridiculousness of the point of being a real catty bug get a bug eyes of the mask bag of ugly but only when the comics really make it harder for
it to be like both especially if I don't know some of the crazy expressions are so out there that makes it hard to like or maybe a bad story but I overall actually really like and I find it charming I actually wouldn't
mind drawing this and this is actually a really bold statement to go all that way with her especially when women looking extra pretty I mean any era of comics but especially a timer you probably could get
away with some interesting thought provoking looks this is the era for it especially in the 70s and they really nailed it hard for unique and different well
obviously there is a strong reference to the black cat but I mean for Selena AK Catwoman to truly own it as her own and I have to really think they both honored the black cat in the original and some honored weird way but on the other ways I think
Catwoman actually really owned it in her own way made her own is what I mean it actually takes time to reinvent an outfit especially for a villain but still holding unique coin of peculiarity of a beautifully
bold outfit whether you find it ugly or beautiful or just down right fascinating in a weird way you're not sure how you feel about it you want to hate it but apart if you likes to hate it and a part of you actually like to see how unique it is I'm just how out there it is and appreciate that alone love it
or hated that outfit is truly unique that is probably the truest statement you could possibly have and honestly I think it's easier to hate something than give
something a chance especially in the more controversial era of opinions and believe me when looking at those dolls she looks better on paper she looks better on a
magazine she looks better on TV even if give her 10 pounds or meet her taller but those dolls and that's coming from someone who makes doll clothing for
hobby and down ouch my personal love prevention stuff is hurting especially for vintage dolls under the right circumstances I want to personally
customize an outfit just for this Catwoman especially the injustice those outfits on those dolls do and I really don't like dissing sad attempts on dolls clothes Dad saying
something those outfits on those dolls are the real stinker and I do feel bad for saying that not for the outfit in the comic it's his own amazing unique awkwardness both
good or bad tasteful or not I am glad to bring blabbering about that darn outfits but to be fair it's one of those ones that give you mileage I really don't know what to think of it
I also have to say real quick the green outfit was not actually a bad rendition of it but I think turning it purple brown albeit possibly not the best choice even yellow
maybe not yellow heck even turning into a cream white or the street of white would have been unusual twist maybe even made her look nice sweet and innocent I
think I would have actually made a very unusual twist of don't judge a book by its character because you might think oh sweet looking kitty cat of the lady then turns around and she's actually a villain
would have been answering very interesting thing the other outfit regardless of that weird lizard like pattern though I have to admit that was very unique and
interesting aesthetic to it though the insistent level of her wanting to marry Batman it's barely bonkers and that's coming from a girl who loves watching
Superman girlfriend comics videos testing something to a certain level but you're not going to be seeing Louis going into the
crazy house with her extreme crazy antics to get superman to marry her I think that last comment was a bit harsh on both Louis and Catwoman but to be fair as much as I think the cat puns are really silly
and kind of stupid I rather her go for her with the cat pans then constantly go to the moronic levels of trying to get Batman's
marry her it's one thing to play on jealousy it's another to make her kind of lose it over something really dumb I mean having your
heart's desire get the better of you is not necessarily good help or healthy it's important to follow them but the person you really like is not going to reciprocate your feelings in any way or other minor or even if they did the way that you're acting
is making them run away is possible considering that she's in love with the dark Knight that's saying something he knows
he's not insane himself by the way that she's acting even if he liked her back is a perfectly level understandably hard nope and yes I just called Batman crazy pretty
bonkers but she's taking it to the next level with her jealousy here everyone's crazy
If my grandma looks bad I'm sorry if my writing looks bad altogether my typing just spell check is both making things hard for me to write this and I am just terrible at remembering punctuations
Not my favorite cat-costume but way better then the green jumpsuit.
Selina was wearing the pirate costume when she face Bats and WW in B&B #131. She does something in that story a good 15 years before the Joker
tries it in the infamous Death in the Family story.
Watching how those letter collums used to be, I'm starting to feel very glad comment sections have a limit of characters people can use 😄
It might have worked on Eartha Kitt if Kitt had a]been allowed to vamp and b] been given better scripts.)
I never realized the black & blue costume was from the -er- Batman and Robbins era.
Totally agree but this was my least favourite catwoman costume but the purple one and Jim balants were my top two
The costume looks alright to me, but that might just be because I have some distance to it. If I was born back in the day and that costume popped up in the comics I might be disheartened a bit, as there would be a big chance that this is the costume we are stuck with going forward, and there is no internet to amplify the complaints about the costume.
Love the review! Super interesting. Also wishing you had done it wearing a Catwoman cowl. ;-)
Who could hate a cat woman costume?
Haters lol
Dog Man, presumably. Also Ailurophobia Lass.
6:47 It's like how at the end of Season 4 of Gotham Barbara Kean develops a random hatred of men and blames them for the city's problems.
It belongs with gym instructor Black Canary and Odyssey Era Wonder Woman. It should be reviled.
