    Always loved the pilot episode "The Reluctant Stowaway" that started off a great Sci-Fi series.The first 3 episodes of the first season had intermittent scenes where the Jupiter 2 glowed like a bright light which was also shown in Season 2 episode 6 "Prisoners of Space" where John, Don, Will and Dr. Smith were being questioned by the Galaxy Tribunal where they showed flashback scenes from the first 3 episodes. When I was in elementary school they showed repeats of Lost in Space on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the late 60s, early 70s. Long before I ever knew of DVDs I made it a point to watch L.I.S. at its scheduled time.
    Long live Lost in Space.

    Doctor Smith could have gotten out of the same waste chute he pushed the guard out when he knocked him out. But that would have cut short the beloved character of the guest Star. Great episode. Long live Lost In Space. Wonderful Jonathan Harris.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️😄❤️

    I understand why the character of Smith had to change. Someone that evil would be killed in the first few episodes, but still, there's a secret love I have for this evil Smith. Who....makes a small appearance once again as the alien creature impersonating Dr. Smith in "Fear Creature." Very nice to see.

    I love it, still all these decades later. THIS was the only time I thought that his screaming worked and was real for the scene. All the other times he screamed, all thru SE 2 and 3 just made him seem so weak and wimpy, campy ....... as he played it. We know, we know, that's how he played the role that saved the show. I still preferred the evil, scheming, sinister Smith who was not afraid to hold and use a laser pistol .

    Aeolus 14-Umbra to Dr. Smith. Yes we know where you are, You're Screwed!!🤣 Thank for posting this clip from episode 1. It explains why Dr. Smith became the unplanned passenger of Jupiter 2's expedition to Alpha Centauri, which we all know why they never made it. The scream Dr. Smith let out at Liftoff was the effects of the Anti-Gravity Drive that produced 250 Watt of Mega Power, and not the comedic scream that Dr. Smith was known for as the show progressed. For some reason, this part of the Propulsion System was never mentioned on the show. But it's mentioned on the Lost in Space website, and Wikipedia.🎥🎬⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐‼️🌎🌌

    I read that the engines of the Jupiter II produce some type of electromagnet wave that is harmful to the human nervous system, that's why the Robinsons were placed in suspended animation during liftoff. Since Dr Smith was wide awake during liftoff the electromagnet waves scrambled his brain and turned him into the quivering whimp we see in the rest of the series. Oh the pain.

    • @TheTheo58

      I read the Anti-Gravity Drive system when used at 80% power there is no inherent danger to the crew. However 100% power with the loud hum and glow around the haul was employed during the launch on October 16th 1997.

    • @ellexking9136
      @ellexking9136 5 місяців тому

      @@TheTheo58 Absolutely True. But for some reason the Anti-Gravity Drive was never mentioned on the show. It would have given a better understanding why Dr. Smith let out the scream at Liftoff. At 250 watts at full power., the Liftoff was quite unpleasant for Dr. Smith. The electrical sizzling can be heard, after the count of 0, and before the famous scream. Laying down on the launch couch might have saved Dr. Smith from being killed. He sure wasn't looking too well after unstrapping from the launch couch, sweating, and nearly falling on his face. As far as the quivering wimp as you said, Jonathan Harris Hated the Deep Dark Villain, and knew that he would be killed off after just 5 episodes. Jonathan's best characters were Comedic Villainy. So pretty much, The Anti-Gravity Drive really didn't have any effects on his brain. Jonathan Harris didn't want to be unemployed after 5 episodes, and the rest of The Cast, and Crews of Lost in Space were able to work for 3 seasons.

    Just for perspective Smith had just KILLED a guard after he caught Smith after he programmed the robot to KILL the family after liftoff. I'm always amazed people overlook this. Heck, I did too but I was like ten years old.

      Smith only knocked him out. There's a moment afterwards when deciding what to do with him that Smith looks at the radiation area which would kill him but decides against it and instead drops the guard into the garbage shoot. The guard lands in a garbage dumpster outside the ship. This dumpster would no doubt be removed from the area prior to the ship launch. So the guard most likely woke up later and reported that he was talking to Doctor Smith when suddenly everything went black.

      @@Mark-td5uxFeeling the effects of the Anti-Gravity Drive is the reason for Dr. Smith's scream. It produced 250 Mega-Watts of power. The glow around the Jupiter 2 was from the electromagnetic field with every rotation of the Power Fusion Core. Why wasn't this never mentioned on the show?? When the Shuttle, and Space-X Astronauts are launched into space, the Max G-Forces up until MECO is 3 G's. That definitely wouldn't cause the Astronauts to scream like that.

    Something I just noticed for the 1st time, when Smith tries to exit the ship there's no airlock, no inner hatch, were they still using the Gemini set for this scene? I tried to see if he has to step up or down that low deck change as he runs around but couldn't tell

    Conveniently there was a stowaway chair stashed under a control panel… I mean after the meaningless action of throwing a fire extinguisher at the viewport that is engineered to withstand the rigors of space travel and all… what other options did he have? LOL

  • @ellexking9136
    @ellexking9136 Місяць тому

    @thejupiter2574, The Scream that Dr. Smith let out at launch wasn't because of him being weak, and whimpy. It was because of the Anti-Gravity Drive that produced 250 megawatts of power to escape the gravitational pull from Earth as part of The Propulsion System that was only used once for the rest of the show. The glow around the spacecraft also was the result of an electro magnetic field from The Power Fusion Core with each rotation. In simple terms, Dr. Smith experienced a very uncomfortable electrical shock throughout his body. If he wasn't laying on the Launch Couch, which acted as a form of insulation he probably would have been killed. Speaking of killed, If Jonathan Harris didn't change the character of Dr. Smith, that character would have been killed off after just 5 episodes. In an interview I saw on UA-cam YEARS AGO, Jonathan Harris said that he knew that he was going to be in big trouble if he didn't change Dr. Smith character, and he knew that he had to do something quickly from day 1 on the set when Jonathan sat up from the Launch Couch after being in hiding to sabotage the Robot. According to Jonathan, After rising up from the Launch Couch, Irwin Allen shouted out, THAT BEAUTIFUL EVIL FACE!!! Now Dr. Smith was supposed to feel some discomfort at liftoff from the Anti-Gravity Drive. But as you can see in the scene at liftoff, Jonathan Harris took it over the top, and was just the beginning of Jonathan being able to do what he wanted as the show went on. The scream at liftoff was Completely Unscripted. BTW, listen for a kind of electrical static sound of the interior of the lower deck, right after the count of 0, and just before Dr. Smith's scream. It all makes sense, after he was unstrapping himself from the Launch Couch, when The Jupiter 2 achieved Escape Velocity. That's why Dr. Smith was sweating, nearly passing out and hitting the floor. Dr. Smith looked like he had a bit too much to drink. All because of The Anti-Gravity Drive. But after the Unscripted Scream, Jonathan was in the early stages of turning Dr. Smith from an evil Saboture, to The Comedic Villain. About the 4th episode, Irwin Allen began to catch on to what Jonathan was doing with the character of Dr. Smith, and shouted out, DO MORE!! These are True Facts. The roles Jonathan Harris Absolutely Enjoyed was that of Comedic Villainy because there's Long Geverty in that kind of work. He was Absolutely Great At It!!🎥🎬⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐‼️🌌

    We never heard "Aolus 14 Umbra" again after this it was expanded on in the comic book series Bill Mumy did in the 80s where Smith is working for Aliens and Aolus 14 Umbra was the code phrase he used with the Aliens but in the show we are to assume he's working for an enemy foreign power like Russia or China who paid him to sabotage the ship and kill the family.

      The writers of Lost in Space didn't change the character of Dr. Smith. Jonathan Harris, and Jonathan Harris alone was responsable for doing that. If he'd kept playing the role of a deep dark villian, he would have been killed off after just 5 episodes. Research Jonathan Harris interviews on UA-cam and hear it for youself.
