  • Light on the memes, heavy on the sound of my own bullshit and voice! Listen to me spend infinitely more time on the reticle than Stiner did. It's finally time to review the Steiner T6Xi!!!! I know this one is important to everyone, because I'm steadily getting questions on it. I got 800 rounds through it, and it's early, but it has to happen. For your time melting punishment.....I mean enjoyment, the full review of the Steiner T6Xi 1-6x24 KC-1. You're lucky I cut out the 10 mins of Morgan Freeman Dufresne jokes.
    My UA-cam Channel is not monetized, my rumble has less than 200 followers (That's honestly a big jump from last time, thanks guys!), I do not profit from the use of any of the cutaways used in my videos. I desperately need them to keep people's attention for ALMOST 40mins!!! Camman.....who the hell is going to watch this? That's absolutely ridiculous, I'm ashamed.

    The center dot is 0.15 mrad. The thickness of the center ring is 0.30 mrad and the diameter of the center ring is 4.42 mrad. The vertical hold lines are 0.15 mrad (for all those comparing below on how much thicker it is, the Stryker is 0.18 mrad). But serious comments aside, looking for my invite to the NavyMan Range Day where we all look through a bunch of scopes back to back, thinking about it ... we need a NavyMan Range day.

    I took a handgun class with Jon last year and we talked about this thing so I was excited to see it come out. Your initial impressions were concerning, but I’m glad to see the full review addressed some initial skepticism. I’m not surprised he posted that info as soon as realized it, probably one of the cooler instructors I’ve been around. (Also yes, his classes are awesome.)
    I’ve been waiting on your review to pull the trigger on one of these 👍👍

    Nice. That reticle is badass. I’ve had 1-4, 1-6, and 1-8x LPVO’s and I think the 1-6x is kinda the sweet spot for a general use AR. Enough magnification to make hits at distance but not so much the scope becomes too big/heavy. I had the OG Steiner P4xi 1-4x and it was great but I always wanted just a big more magnification.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  Рік тому +6

      The P4Xi is the king of the 1-4s. I like it on my shorter guns that can't reliably get to or past 500 yards anyway. Perfect for a 400 yard gun. But on my 14.5's I definitely lean heavy on the 1-6. It's perfect for fighting rifles. My 16" guns are more precision oriented so 1-8 is perfect for that I think.

      @@navyman8903 no argument from me. I setup my dad, who isn’t an AR guy but wanted something more capable for “emergencies”, with a budget PSA AR and used that P4xi I had for that. I almost bought a Trijicon Credo sfp/Delta Styker last night but decided to save some more money and just get an ATACR since it does everything I want the Styker/Credo to do while also having an excellent reticle for distance shooting and as a bonus 2x more magnification. Have you played with the credo 1-8 with the larger objective? Would you say that handily beats the t6xi in glass and image quality or does it still hold its own? If the credo 1-8 is better would you say the extra weight is worth it for the 8x and 28mm objective or would you still choose the t6xi or credo 1-6 to save weight?

    Also, regarding that magnification ring...would it be dumb to just over-hand grip it and slide the hand vs using the lever (similar to how you'd do with an entire occular bell that rotate), or is it not going to pan out too well?

      No, I overhand grip it when I'm using it, but demonstration for the video is different with my setup. I prefer having the throw lever to give me more speed/confidence in my adjustments. And the whole housing moving is my only hit on the ATACR other than the FOV.

    Great review. About the distracting glowing red band at 5x, is it dumb of me to suggest bumping clear to 6x instead of stopping at 5x, or down to 3x if dialing down?
    I haven't looked through the thing so I don't know how distracting that devil-halo would be. I'm guessing it would bug me at 5x in reality since the images here looked annoying. Aside from that, this seems very good and a happy bump up from the P4Xi, which still delivers no matter what the interwebz may cry.
    After looking at the ATACR 1-8x reticle, I see your point about the windhold dot tree. Not too busy.
    Did you get to look through Delta Stryker 1-6x, or the SAI 1-6x with the funny 4 bullet center X? Both of those look like they also are similar to a P4Xi with another 2x, though the SAI reticle seems like it would take some brain training to not be bugged by it.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  Рік тому +1

      I got to look through the Delta Stryker which was excellent and I haven't looked through the SAI yet. As for the 5x thing I absolutely would recommend and probably dial it all the way up to 6x in practical application. Sometimes backing off 1 or 2 power gives you more FOV around your target. But you don't get that with this unfortunately.

    • @seanoneil277
      @seanoneil277 Рік тому +1

      @@navyman8903 It would suck if at 6x, and looking for a wee bit more FOV, and having the devil-halo intruding. Even non-illuminated, it's there in the way for its circumference. Me saying "dial down to 3x" isn't really help if you only need a bit more FOV. I gotta quit bench racing the reticle. Thanks for sharing the insights and how you actually got to preferring this reticle. I also thought it looked goofy based on the early images and no info - as you've already said better than I could.

    • @navyman8903

      Well in fairness to the Stryker, any prism optic will be much clearer due to simplicity and how beautiful they can make a prism. Even primary arms prisms are pretty good lookin. But I plan to pick one up to give it a go. I might use it as my accuracy testing optic if it passes muster. I liked the one I looked through. But the Steiner might be better suited if the stadia are too think on the Stryker.

    So...what I really want to know...does this thing even come close to the durability and reliability of the Nightforce NX8 that underwent testing with CRANE? I like what I see, but "will it take a dump" is the #1 question I always have with optics. How isolated is the lens cell from the tube? How secure are the lenses within this cell to recoil/counter-recoil? How reliable are the turrets on the 1st turn and the 10,000th turn? How is thermal stability of the optics cell? That sort of nerd shit that really matters long term.

      @navyman8903  Рік тому +2

      I will say Steiner does a lot more abuse testing than most companies. I think Trijicon and NF do it as well. But the stats on this thing are solid. The 33ft submersion in a Tactical level optic is Military level optic performance. I think it would be better than the NX8 on some levels but possibly not all levels. Depends on the testing criteria and bias. The front lense is also well protected and the rear lense is about standard depth for new LPVO offerings.

      @@ChristopherGoydich-cb6bd I will say, I've been able to see through a lot of optics of some brands due to their popularity, and much fewer samples of others. So keep that in mind. My most consistent optics brands so far, in no order, are NightForce, Schmidt & Bender (I've looked through 3, a Marine issue PMII 3-12, a Larger mag PMII, and a Short Dot Dual CC), Trijicon, and Steiner. I've only looked through 1 K16i which was great, 1 Delta Stryker (pretty damn good), 2 Trijicon Accupoint 1-6's, 1 Primary arms 1-6 FFP raptor, and a few other odds an ends. Then the boring stuff, multiple Vortex Razor Gen II E's, probably 5 maybe 6 Vortex Razor Gen III's, 5 or 6 PST Gen II's, and a bunch of trash tier strike eagles, which I hate. For Steiner, I've looked through more P4Xi's than most people, extremely consistent. Easily a dozen samples. Conversely I've only seen in person a few T5Xi's and my T6Xi is the only one I have. I've been regularly smitten or impressed with NightForce optics, but not the NX8, I didn't mind the NX8 2.5-20 I played with at JTAC, but it gets fuzzy past certain distances, 600 looked good, 800 was soft. But all the ATACR's I've looked through, were extremely consistent. Trijicon Credos have also been extremely consistent for me, the 1-6's and 1-8's, same with VCOGs. I think if you stick with Steiner, NF, Trijicon, and Schmidt & Bender (If you have stacks of cash), you will get a rugged, reliable, and consistent product. Any company, and I mean any company can have a lemon that was built at quittin time on a Friday. So keep that in mind. But those 4 brands are true stand outs for me. There are others like the Stryker that I think are also quality, but aren't as well circulated and the price scares the general public away from them. Because why get a Stryker when you can get a PST Gen II despite the fact it weighs 25oz....it's $500-600 vs $800-900.....So I think there are good and consistent optics out there that I may not have had the opportunity to look at. To include Kahles. I've only seen 1 K16i in the wild ever. But it was excellent glass. IT's probably a video I could spend an hour on and go through everything, but it would be boring as hell for most people lol.

    Really like this optic and reticle on 6x out to some distance. Don’t really like it on any other magnification and the eye box is good but not as good as Credo, Razor, Atacr, or even the PLXc. I hate hate hate how the outside circle is brighter than the dot which I know is common with lpvo illumination. Thinking I may sell this one and pick up the new Credo 1-10 for a better overall package at a similar cost.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  4 місяці тому

      It's not as good as the PLXc? I haven't run one, but it's near identical to the NX8 and I got to compare them. The eyebox is definitely better on the T6Xi. The Credo 1-6 FFP has a better eyebox for sure. The Razor Gen II or Gen III?
      Also I agree with your criticism on the big ring Illumination. I've grown to really love it, but it does have a few annoying features. Mostly good. But the ring Illumination and 5x really eat at me. But 6x, there's nothing more precise in a 1-6 offering so far. I also really like the turrets, both for their precision and the turret itself.

    • @josephsantana3094

      @@navyman8903 Both gen 2 and 3 Razor. PLXc I felt like it was better but only by a very small margin. Maybe it’s not. I don’t own one I only got to try it briefly. The turrets havent given me any trouble but I don’t like the allen key locking design. Thats another thing I forgot in my original comment. The simple pop up to adjust and down to lock that most other companies use would have been faster, more convenient, and just overall greatly preferred.

      T6Xi hands down. Better controls, clearer glass and the reticle at 6x is extremely precise. Taking it out to 616 yards was easy mode. I also like how clear the optic is out to longer distances than I could competently engage with it. Allows me to see what I'm working with and make informed decisions, even at 6x.

    Number one job of any magnifying optic is an exacting understanding for where the rifle is pointed. My impression is this scope’s reticle gives shooter exacting recognition quickly. I’d rather have MOA dials, which better supports shooters having learned basic marksmanship with irons on the M16A2 or A4. Today, a scope with mil or sans scale reticle and MOA dials is a unicorn due to scope marketing directed to novice shooters who incorrectly believe matching dials to reticle scale is important when fact is the mil reticle and MOA dials will ALWAYS be best for all scenarios. If this scope was offered in a 1-4.5 power it would be compelling for Service Rifle Competition.

    • @navyman8903

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  Рік тому +1

      @ChristopherGoydich-cb6bd so on these outings I used just the reticle to get my hits at 333, 400, and 616. In the future anything over 400 I'm going to dial. I do have a 200 yard zero on this optic so it doesn't need nearly as much turret adjustment.
      But all of this would be solved with some very basic windholds.

    • @Pantone268Plus
      @Pantone268Plus Рік тому +3

      To add in to what you’re saying I think people forget, matching turrets to reticles wasn't meant for competition, it was meant for fighting. If you’re working in a team and someone is spitting for you, they’re giving you corrections in mils from their reticle (for example). You used to have to translate that mil adjustment into MOA clicks to bring your mil reticle onto the correction.

    How in the hell is a 1-6x FIRST MF FOCAL PLANE have a BETTER eyebox than the 1-4x sfp p4xi?!? I'm not doubting your claim or anything but how is such witchcraft even achievable? I've had my eyes behind a ton of different LPVO's from high end to low yet I keep coming back to the p4xi for it's flat image and extremely forgiving eyebox.

    If you had to choose on a 14.5 5.56 platform, would you take the Steiner 1-6 or the Trijicon Credo 1-6? Both seem like great options, just wondering if one has a slight edge over the other

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  4 місяці тому +1

      I honestly like both, it would be dealer's choice with which reticle you prefer. Both come with a strong recommendation from me, if budget is a concern, the CREDO is cheaper by a few hundred. You can get one, with a mount for cheaper than the T6Xi. But both are very solid. IT's a hard decision, and at some point I will make a vs video, but it's probably not going to be for months since I only have so many things with me right now.
