I remember hearing this song for the first time in 1976, this was Deniece's first hit. Deniece Williams got her big break in the 70's singing backup for Stevie Wonder.

and any singer who impressed Stevie Wonder had something special. Niecy, Minnie Riperton, India Arie, Syreeta all got his attention.

Denise is up there with the best female vocalists. She has done work with Stevie Wonder and also the amazing Minnie Ripperton. Please react to Denise’s song “ It’s Your Conscience “ . “Free” was produced by the Great Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire, that probably explains the familiar sound you hear.

My best friend got the "This Is Niecy" album when it was released in 1976. We were 13-14 at the time and listened to "Free" repeatedly! Her voice was beautiful, and the song was so pretty. Still is. In response to your question, Maurice White (of Earth Wind & Fire) and Charles Stepney produced this song.

A very beautiful reaction 💐👸🏾! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Deniece Williams before: It's Gonna Take A Miracle and Let's Hear It For The Boy. Free was the lead single from Deniece Williams 1976 album: This Is Niecy. It was written by Deniece Williams, Hank Redd, Nathan Watts and Susaye Greene. It was produced by Maurice White (from Earth Wind And Fire) and Charles Stepney. The song reached #2 on the R&B chart and #25 on the Hot 100. They don't call Deniece Williams "Songbird" 🎶🐦 for nothing. It may sound familiar because this song has been sampled by a lot of artists. Yes, that was a trumpet sound. The song: Free, sounds a lot like an Earth Wind & Fire type of song to me- an extra chilly most vibe.
    Deniece Williams Info 📰:
Deniece Williams was born June Deniece Chandler on June 3, 1951 in Gary, Indiana- from the same city as the Jackson Family. Deniece Williams grew up singing in The Church Of God In Christ. Her favorite vocalists were Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson, and she was also inspired by her parents, both of whom sang. Deniece Williams' soaring, four-octave soprano voice made her one of the most distinctive talents to arrive during the soul era. She has been described as "one of the great soul voices" by the BBC. Deniece Williams has won four Grammys Awards with twelve nominations altogether.
From 1968 through 1970, while in her late teens, Deniece Williams recorded six singles for the Chicago-based Toddlin' Town record label and its Lock Records subsidiary as Deniece Chandler. None of the songs charted, but the song: "I'm Walking Away" and "Mama, I Wish I Stayed At Home", became favorites on the UK's Northern Soul music scene. Deniece Williams temporarily left music behind to pursue nursing education and steady employment and started a family.
Deniece Williams attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland in the hopes of becoming a registered nurse and an anesthetist, but she dropped out after a year and a half. She recalled: "You have to be a good student to be in college, and I wasn't". Deniece Williams also was performing on stage while still a college student: "a part-time job singing at a club- Casino Royal, and I liked it. It was a lot of fun". During those years, she also worked at a telephone company and as a ward clerk at the Chicago Mercy Hospital.
Through her cousin, Deniece Williams later met Stevie Wonder, another one of her favorite singers, backstage at a concert. That meeting led to an audition and her joining Wonderlove, Stevie Wonder's group of background vocalists. Deniece Williams performed and recorded with Stevie Wonder for a three year period that included the recording sessions for his albums: Talking Book, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Songs In The Key Of Life, as well as Stevie Wonder studio sessions with singers Syreeta and Minnie Riperton. During this time, Deniece Williams contributed background vocals to recordings by numerous other artists including: Don Everly,Kenny Rankin, Esther Phillips and Roberta Flack. She also co-wrote material for the Soul Train Gang including the Stevie Wonder-arranged song: "Baby Open The Door", featuring her on co-lead vocals and Merry Clayton's song: "How'd I Know".
It wasn't until the mid 1970s that Deniece Williams truly established herself, as a solo artist who could also produce and arrange her own material while partnering with R&B and Jazz music industry giants such as Maurice White, Ray Parker Jr, Thom Bell and George Duke. Poised to take flight as a solo artist, Deniece Williams signed a production deal with Maurice White and Charles Stepney and joined the roster of Columbia Records, home to Maurice White's band: "Earth, Wind & Fire".
Deniece Williams released her first album, This Is Niecy, in 1976. This Is Niecy scored a gold certification on the strength of the number two Hot Soul Singles chart song: "Free", also the songs: "Cause You Love Me Baby" and "That's What Friends Are For", charted as well. Deniece Williams co-wrote all three of the singles. This planted the seeds for an enduring musical career highlighted by the number one pop hit songs: "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" (1978) and "Let's Hear It For The Boy" (1984), 11 additional charting albums, and Grammys in the gospel field for the songs: "I Surrender All" and "They Say" (both 1986), as well as for the songs: "I Believe In You" (1987) and "This Is My Song" (1998). Since the latter Grammy Award win, Deniece Williams has issued the album: "Love, Niecy Style" (2007), and a handful of singles including: "When You Love Somebody" (2020), her first independent release.
Rather than take advantage of her considerable pop momentum after album: Let's Hear It For The Boy, Deniece Williams opted to record her first contemporary Gospel album. The decision wasn't all that surprising given that her albums dating back to "This Is Niecy" contained faith-based material and that album "Let's Hear It For The Boy", also included "Whiter Than Snow," Grammy-nominated for Best Inspirational Song. Her album Gospel: So Glad I Know, arrived on the Sparrow record label in 1986 and fared well on Billboard's Gospel and Christian charts. It garnered three Grammy Award nominations.
Deniece Williams took the Grammy award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female for her song: "I Surrender All", and with featured guest Sandi Patty won Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus for her song: "They Say", which the solo original song version appeared on her 1983 album: I'm So Proud.
After another mainstream album release: Hot On The Trail (1986), she finished off her lengthy Columbia Records era with the albums: Water Under The Bridge (1987) and As Good As It Gets (1988), albums which each mixed contemporary Gospel and R&B and was led by a Top Ten Black Singles hit songs: "Never Say Never" and "I Can't Wait. By the end of the 1980s decade, she was nominated for four additional Grammys, winning Best Gospel Performance Female for her song: "I Believe In You", off her 1987 album: Water Under The Bridge.
During the 1990s, Deniece Williams made guest appearances on albums by other artists including: Nancy Wilson, George Duke and Stevie Wonder and released three of her own Gospel albums as well. Her album: Lullabies To Dreamland, was issued in 1991, followed by her album: Love Solves It All, in 1996. Her third album of the 1990s: This Is My Song (1998), won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. Nine years passed before her next album release: "Love, Niecy Style", on which she covered R&B classics spanning the '60s, '70s, and early '80s. George Duke, Stevie Wonder and Philip Bailey were among the collaborators on that album. Deniece Williams has gone on to release a handful of new singles since then including the song: "When You Love Somebody" (2020), her first independent release.
Deniece Williams went on to appear in the 2003 holiday movie: Christmas Child. During December 2005 she appeared on the reality-dating show: Elimidate, as part of their "Celebrity Week". She has also appeared in the 2013 television movie: Miracle At Gate 213 and in the television series Beauty And The Baller in 2017.
In 2011, TV One produced an Unsung epsiode on Deniece Williams' life and music career.
Deniece Williams still performs her songs live on stage in 2023.
