It might be the first in Europe but there are already a couple of cars running with this engine already in the US. Still we are really excited because we think this engine is really a great fit for the small roadster. Stay tuned for the next updates, it only gets better from here on!
OneLapHeroes well, at least for me, this has replaced Taylor Ray's aluminium 5.3 swap as the most intriguing on UA-cam. Good luck with the car, hope it's a rocket on the 'Ring!
The LFX is my dream Miata swap... I actually have a car with an LLT, the earlier revision of the LFX. It makes slightly less power, but its still a stout, lively, thrilling engine to drive with, even in an almost 5,000 lbs car.
One year back he was closer than ever selling the car (or burning it to the ground?) but in the end decided to give it one more chance. We are happy he did because we also can't wait to see this car in action!
Yes!!! Kostas, this car is going to be insane. I don't think it would be possible to register this swap in Germany, so by setting it up in Greece you have this unique opportunity. Can you imagine how much fun this thing will be on the ring? I can't. It's crazy. I'm so happy for you dude
There are V6 Miatas in Germany and if you think about it it is not much different than a K20 swap. If the swap is well-engineered, and this one really really is, the right workshop would have no problem to do this or a V8. The real problem is I guess... budget! Anyway we didn't make the decision based on reason and as you know such extensive swaps in Miatas make little financial sense. But can you imagine how much fun it will be on the 'Ring? ;)
Exactly man. Haha, talk to me about financial sense. As they say, money can't buy happiness, but you can engine swap a miata and drive it on the ring so that might be the next best thing. That's where numbers stop to matter. This year will be a lot of fun for us and an important chapter in our lives. Buckle up!
It's gonna be interesting build, a lot of the local guys (Can-Am) have v8 roadster setups. Most have trouble modulating the skinny pedal to keep the power down consistently. That V6 should help a lot with that, hopefully should give you a nice smooth power band. It's always a balance ;)
Exactly that was the reason that Kostas didn't go for an LS and he ended up with an LFX. When all is said and done the costs are very similar, but we kinda went for balance and not ultimate numbers. P.S. Btw this engine sits also very nicely inside an RX-8's engine bay! ;)
Unfortunately it WAS a ton of money. And that is also the reason that from the last time you saw this car Kostas needed almost a full year to put everything together. Then again... on a positive not, THIS LOOKS SO GOOD! :) P.S. There is a lot of cheap frozen pizza in Kostas future.
You know what? V8 epeen aside, an NA V6 swap sounds like an amazing idea. The premise of turbos is cool in theory, but unless you have an entire support crew, I've rarely seen it work reliably enough unless severely de-tuned. NA motors are always treated like the red-headed stepchild of the modding scene. I love them, I love the response, and more importantly, I love the sound. I wish you the best of luck with the project, and I'm actually waiting for audio of the completed project. As you said, the point in this 3rd generation was to streamline the engine and remove weight. A bit limiting for the future but then again for an MX-5 the stock power should be more than enough so the plan is to keep it stock -and reliable- as long as possible!
We were also pleasantly surprised how well-thought -outand well made was the V8Roadstars kit we received. There are currently 4 V6-swap options for the MX-5. The Honda J32-J35 is probably the execution we like the least BUT we have to give it the fact that is the most affordable as well. We might share our detailed thoughts on this (the 4 options and their differences and we went that route) in one of the next episodes of the build.
@@OneLapHeroes I want to hear more about the Honda J32-J35 swap. It looks so simple: a little less power gives you a reliable, efficient engine and a stock drivetrain. It also makes V6 engine noises.
what transmission did you use i couldnt hear it well. i have an nb and this gave me a great idea for a v6 swap, could you do a part list of the full build :D
What was the Wilwood brake kit you had on that fitted under 13" wheels? I want more stopping power but I can't find anything that will fit under my 14" watanabe wheels. Did you rate these brakes?
It is the Flyin' Miata little big brake kit. Works with stock rotors (low cost) and is probably the kit you want since nothing is really slimmer than Wilwood calipers. That said it is probably one of the few things we wouldn't really recommend to people that do real, hard, track use. Maybe for fast road use it is okay but we certainly don't dig the quality of the calipers.
Sometimes we believe OLH editor-in-chief keeps using the most annoying tunes possible to send people away. Song at 6:00 mark is modern re-take on an old 'rebetiko' song (Ta paidia ths geitonias sou). Clearly the right song for a car build/video.

Hey, why didn't you go with a k24 swap from kmiata? Is V6 cheaper and stronger? Also how much did shipping cost you (without taxes) and which compay did you use? I'm thinking of kmiata swap and would like to calculate the expenses.
Kostas considered a K20/K24 build. The problem is he didn't want again a 'built' engine. The Camaro is a low mileage, completely stock engine (with more power than the average K20/K24 build). We think no swap is better. They are just different. You can do a budget K20 build cheaper. But to build a strong and reliable K24/K20, to have the same performance as the V6 in the end will probably cost you the same money. In both cases you can buy an engine for 1-2.000 Euro but that barely scrapes the expenses hidden behind. In real world we think these are 10.000+ Euro (or more) swaps. However what you get (in both cases) is something very unique. All the positive of owning an MX-5 with REAL reliable, N/A power! P.S. We are building both a K20 and a V6 car so you can actually wait and see how each build develops...
Volvo T5 B5234t is the best swap. Holds 1140hp (youtube) cost 270 euro for me in finland. Bmw ZF transmission holds 1000nm+++. 5 cylinders only 5 pistons and H rods. Good luck with those expensive low horsepower swaps lol.
Two things: - If you have a 270 Euro, 1140 horsepower engine, we will buy it right now. Hell we even drive to Finland to pick it up. - If the cost isn't 270 Euro and you have to spend more money on top isn't the best swap a 2JZ, that not only is a relatively 'cheap' engine, but also holds 2400 (youtube) horsepower ! ! ! In all honesty the T5 engine (the whole family of engines) are really great solid engines. They can do 250-300 hp any day, all day. However they are heavier than the Miata engine (and the V6) and not a bolt on solution (which means custom fab and even more fab to get that BMW trans in there). When all is said and done, not only you added weight but you still carry the same turbo problems our Miata previous build did suffer from. We feel that you probably didn't even want an answer and it was just a rant towards our 'expensive low horsepower swaps' but we kinda love a good argument so... :)

MV5 from the Camaro . We really believe it is this flat torque curve and extra displacement that will actually make the light MX-5 a very fun car around the Nurburgring (a fast track, with demanding complex sections, uphill parts and long straights) and the main reason Kostas went for this instead of a K20/K24 build. We are happy if we can see anything around 300 hp. We are more after the stock reliability and removing complexity and heat issues that came in a turbo MX-5 that packs the same performance.

Frankly? Still so much effort and expense too hard to justify ....just go buy a used Cayman porsche...eptiomy of "turn key" radical upgrade ...if you ask me anyway....nevertheless COOL ....IF I find used ...but then I still can't buy due to governmental emission regulation. (CARB here in California in my case)...sigh...
Funny because many times in reality advised people that want a dual-use Trackday car that does it all to get... a used Cayman. That said one should factor in the emotional side of things. We all tend to have different 'dream' builds for different reasons...
That 3.6 is a piece of shit engine. I've replaced 10 in the last 2 years. Major timing chain issues and PCV issues. One bank(back side in fwd platform) runs scorching hot. Timing chain stretch is the worst on the heavier vehicles they used it in like the Cadillac srx(did 4 engines because of that). The SUV's are prone to failure well before 100k miles.
Is this Motor a pure direct injected engine? If yes then Install a Water Methanol injection to prevent Carbon build Up at the Intake Ports and valves. Without WMI you have to Clean the Shit on a regular base and pull the complete Intake Plenum.
It is and the carbon build up is a problem already documented by Camaro owners. This is a very fresh engine so we plan to go with the recommended solutions and see how it goes. It is important to note that this engine is flex-fuel ready so it could run E85. More power and supposedly cleaner engine (less carbon build-up).
Looking forward to seeing it finished and seeing it at the Nurburgring

Nice conversion idea. Shame about the cast exhaust manifold.
Here in Australia we have the same V6 in 3L with cast exhaust manifold, but also the 3.6L with standard heads/manifold.
True, it'll be a little heavier & larger than the integrated manifold setup, but gives you more options down the road.

what trans are you guys using?
Stock Camaro 6-speed tranmission. Engine and gearbox came from the same donor car.
(Funnily enough the transmission is... Japanese, made by Aisin)
@onelapHeroes
haha, awesome! does the shifter for that trans come up to the stock shifter location of the miata like the t56 does?
Exactly. Using the V8R shifter kit you basically don't have to do anything other than bolt it on.
Will it weight less than 1000 Kg?
That is the idea. The car was between 950-980 kg through its different iterations and the swap should be roughly 20 kg more?
Eventually we would like this to be a 280 whp/950 kg car.

how much?
Money Kostas have now in the bank? ZERO.
Looks like about US$7500 for the kit not including engine or brakes.

The Taliban-esque beard is a distraction.
Hilarious spoiler.
