I own both. I love Mazda for reducing the weight from the prior gen but the engine is missing character in a huge way. My S2000 weighs 400 lbs more and it's not as competitive as the ND anymore (autox-wise) but it's so thrilling to hear it rev out and oozes character. I love them both in their own way.
Nice build for sure. Performs well. Have a S/C S2000 and a mildly modded ND2. I must say the ND2 is more fun and responds well to the simplest of mods with greater performance on track in some cases. S2000 full bore with S/C and proper brake mods. Suspension, etc. is an amazing car on track but aero is not to good without a lot of money put into it. I was to build another full track build I would choose an ND like this one.
Having had a tuned na s2000 and 410bhp supercharged on, YES the ND is better! I have a 30th with 220 na bhp, 20% shorter final drive, ohlins, ap racing brakes etc and it is amazing. I have kept mine a ‘gt3’ style build, so it is at home on the road as well as track.

The question to Jan is: What did you guys cut off the car to make this weight. I would say that fitting a Kaaz, two-way coilovers, rollbar and a few more extras adds to the weight....and ND2 in EU doesn't wieght anywhere close to 980kg.
Their HP had always been low compared to cars/engines of similar class. But they are quick because they are light and torquey. Miatas/mx5 are quick because their engines have mid range torque, which is more important then HP imo.
great build! But the vibration from the shifter assembly would drive me nuts (and they have even tried to isolate the sound with the condome :D) Also would be interesting to know which parts that did save the weight that would be 60kg less than my ST ND2
What you see here is not the full potential of the nd. Shortly before the track day we replaced the suspension springs without measuring it again because there was no time. After measuring, the car is now much more stable again. The nb simply has over 100 horsepower more.
That was pretty legit. But having a high compression engine has its draw backs. You literally have to stay up there in the high rpms to be able to floor it. Too low in the rpms and it gets wishy-washy depending on the weather.
Great job so far. Could easily dump another 30+ kg from the interior. It may not need 500bhp, but it needs more than 220. A centrifugal supercharger would be ideal.

Better chassis, way lighter from the factory and then made a bit lighter and tuned for 220hp so a much better power to weight ratio, and better aerodynamic behavior from the factory. Unfortunately the S2000 loses regardless of how much we may love it.

I’ve gone to 9500 once on a mishift and my engine miraculously stayed together… doesn’t make my car a 9500 rpm car. (Sorry for the rant, I don’t mean it as aggressively as it’s coming across… just don’t claim things you’re not willing to back up)
It weighs 4-500 lbs less than an s2000. You’re not looking at the whole picture. And has superior suspension geometry and aero. I’ve had an AP1 s2000 and I’ll be the first to admit the ND is a better car. S2 is more fun though.

“very poor engines” idk what kind of drugs they have in your country but you need to get off them. Mazda run a spec series and every car runs a sealed off the shelf road engine for the entire season flat out and people aren’t losing championships over reliability.
220hp is enough for most tracks but not for spa or the nurburgring imo, you need at least 50 to 60 more hp for those tracks. Also, the car seems a bit understeery to me.
😮 The ND is certainly a lot more modern and would make a better everyday car. I think the S2000 would be a better fun car though (yes, the aerodynamics are atrocious by modern standards!).

It's quick but horribly not practical. It lacks the 9,000 RPM excitement of VTEC or the 12,000 RPM capable 4AGE from Toyota.
